ew Mexico Healthcare Professionals Network Association Hosts 3rd Annual Santa Crawl Santa Crawl 2019 - Members of the New Mexico Healthcare Professional Network Association are hosting the 3rd annual Santa Crawl. The charity event will be held on Thursday, December 5 at 6:00 PM at the Albuquerque Uptown Sports Bar. The proceeds will directly benefit the NM Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, Los Ojos De La Familia as well as a toy drive for children effected by domestic violence.

Last year’s event yielded over $10,000.

Tickets to the event are $10 in advance or $15 at the door. There is a costume contest with prizes for first, second and third as well as a silent-auction and raffle.

“This event continues to grow each year and provides an excellent opportunity to network, have fun and raise money for local causes,” said David Romero, Director of Regional Partnerships at Honor Homecare and founder of the SantaCrawl.

The first stop of the crawl is the Albuquerque Uptown Sports Bar followed by Ojos Loco’s and concluding at Uptown Funk.

Event to benefit The Alzheimer’s

Association, New Mexico Chapter is a nonprofit that provides services and support to the 41,000 New Mexicans with Alzheimer’s disease and their 108,000 unpaid family caregivers.

Our Chapter is a community-based, volunteer-driven 501(c) (3) nonprofit that maximizes collaboration with other public and private agencies; and relies primarily upon funding from private individuals, foundations and corporations to meet the needs created by the growing Alzheimer’s epidemic.

Los Ojos de la Familia is a 501(c) (3) charity organized and operated exclusively for charitable and educational purposes. Ballet Repertory Theatre, Celebrating 30 Years

eep company with Ballet Repertory Theatre, celebrating 30 years of quality ballet, and join us in celebrating your holiday tradition – Ballet Repertory Theatre’s The Nutcracker, running December 14th through the 24th at the historic downtown KiMo Theatre.

Choreographed by BRT’s Executive/Artistic Director, Katherine Giese’s production of The Nutcracker combines tradition with a classic adventure. For this year’s tale of magic and delight, The Nutcracker follows Clara on the night of her parents’ jovial and elegant holiday party where she receives the gift of a Nutcracker doll from her godfather, a wizardly toymaker named Drosselmeyer. Clara’s tale continues late that same evening when she finds herself amid a battle between mischievous mice led by the evil Rat King and the Nutcracker rallying a troupe of toy soldiers. It will take Clara’s bravery to save the Nutcracker from certain doom and free him from the curse that the Rat King himself controls. When the dust settles, Clara has saved the Nutcracker and the

now living prince invites Clara on a journey through the Land of Snow to his Kingdom of Sweets where he can finally be reunited with his queen, the Sugar Plum Fairy.

This year, Ms. Giese envisioned Clara having read the classic literature of Homer’s Odyssey and in Clara’s sweet induced dream world creates her own romantic story of saving the Nutcracker which allows him to return to his kingdom and his love, the Sugar Plum Fairy; much like Athena helps Odysseus return home to Ithaca after the Trojan war and to his wife Penelope.

The 2019 production showcases the talented Ballet Repertory Theatre company dancers and local students from area studios as well as Leo Ameika, a featured guest artist courtesy of Ballet West. Mr. Ameika comes to Albuquerque to partner with the talented and local favorite Emma Heuertz.

The performances of The Nutcracker at the KiMo Theatre culminate in a final show at 1:00 PM on December 24 th with a special Nutcracker Tea following the performance for the audience to sample delights from the

“Kingdom of Sweets” and join the dancers for autographs and photos.

Additional charges apply for the December 24th matinee.

Ballet Repertory Theatre is also pleased to offer a special Military and First Responders night on December 20 th. The Friday performance will have our Standard Seating discounted for all active and retired military and first responders as a special “thank you” for their service.

New Mexico’s Big Christmas Party

Tis the season of the winter holidays: Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, New Year’s, Independence Day. Wait—what? Independence Day? Well, no, not anymore. But it’s a little-known fact that New Mexico’s first celebration of independence from Spain took place at Christmastime.

The Viceroyalty of New Spain, which stretched from Panama to what is now the southwestern United States, had been the crown jewel of Spain’s overseas empire for nearly 300 years. But by the beginning of the 19th century, revolution was in the air.

The U.S. and Haiti had successfully thrown off European rule, and France had violently toppled its hereditary

monarchy. Now it was Mexico’s turn.

The war for independence began in 1810 and lasted 11 long years.

Mexico finally achieved victory when the leader of the opposition forces, Gen. Agostín de Iturbide, rode into Mexico City at the head of his troops September 27, 1821.

News traveled slowly in those days, and formal notification of the end of Spanish rule did not reach Gov. Don Facundo Melgares in Santa Fe until December 26. The news was not unexpected, but how warmly it was received by Melgares and other leading citizens in the provincial capital is a question that has long been debated by historians. New Mexico had not played a major role in the revolutionary movement. Melgares, a career army officer, had adopted a cautious waitand-see approach during his three-year tenure as acting governor, remaining loyal to the crown, but not openly hostile to the insurgents. Whatever happened, he was eager to retain his office. So, when word of independence arrived, he promptly organized a fitting celebration calculated to ingratiate him with the new regime.

Three Kings Day, January 6, 1822, the climax of the Christmas season, was the day appointed for the fiesta, and preparations began at once. An allegorical drama, called a loa, was composed for the occasion, and a

stage was erected outside the Palace of the Governors for its performance.

Gambling booths went up around the plaza. Food was prepared. Musicians polished their instruments. People from nearby villages and pueblos began streaming into the capital as the date drew near.

Only two eyewitness accounts of the event have come down to us, neither of them entirely objective. The first, and probably the more truthful, is Melgares’ official report, later reprinted in a Mexico City newspaper. The other was written by a Missouri trader, Thomas James, who happened to be in Santa Fe at the time, and is included in a memoir he published 20 years later titled Three Years Among the Mexicans and Indians.

As Melgares described it, the day began with the ringing of church bells and a volley of cannon fire, followed by morning Mass and a solemn procession ending at the plaza. The Mexican flag was raised to the accompaniment of patriotic music, and all present proclaimed their allegiance to the new republic, “shouting unceasingly, ‘Independence or death!’” wrote the governor. Many of the women wore sashes of red, white and green, the new national colors. Local dignitaries gave speeches, the loa was performed, and a group of Native Americans from Tesuque Pueblo danced on the plaza.

The revelry continued into the evening with a ball that went on until 4:30 the next morning. “Moderation prevailed so powerfully throughout these events . . . that both men and women decidedly proclaimed the sanctity of our cause,” Melgares concluded.

Thomas James recalled it quite differently. In his version, the festivities went on for five days during which “the city exhibited a scene of universal carousing and revelry . . . reckless dissipation and profligacy . . . vice and licentiousness of every description.”

He went on at length in the same unflattering vein, adding, “I saw enough during this five days’ revelry to convince me that the republicans of New Mexico were unfit to govern themselves or anybody else.”

It should be remembered, however, that these words were written more than two decades after the fact, in the mid-1840s, when promoters of “Manifest Destiny” were looking for any pretext to invade Mexico and annex its northern territories. So some skepticism is warranted.

Whatever happened on that day (or days), it was the one and only time New Mexico celebrated its independence at this season of the year.

Coincidentally, January 6 is also the day New Mexico was admitted to the Union as the 47th state in 1912. But that’s a story for another time.

O

besity is a significant health concern in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 40% of adults in the United States, or 93 million people, are obese. Obesity is associated with many serious medical conditions, including stroke, diabetes, cancer, and heart disease, all of which can lead to preventable and early death.

How is obesity defined?

Obesity is defined as having a

body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher. BMI is calculated using a person’s height and weight. A BMI of 30 would be 175 pounds for the average adult female height of 5 feet 4 inches and 203 pounds for the average adult male height of 5 feet 9 inches. Online tools can calculate your BMI when you input your height and weight.

A BMI between 25 and 30 is considered overweight.

Who is affected by obesity?

Obesity is present in people from almost all age groups and ethnicities, although it is more prevalent in some groups. Almost 20% of children or adolescents (2-19 years old) are obese, and the numbers increase to 33% for young adults (20-39 years old) and 40% for adults age 40 and over. The rates of obesity have been steadily increasing in the country. In the late 1970s,

the prevalence of obesity was 15% for adults and 5% for children and adolescents.

Why does the prevalence of obesity matter?

Obesity is known to increase the risk of developing several serious, chronic diseases, including diabetes, heart disease, stroke, joint problems, lung diseases, sleep apnea and certain cancers. Any of those conditions can decrease quality of life, diminish the ability to do what one wants to do, and increase risk for preventable, early death. It has been estimated that obesity-related conditions cost $150 billion and cause about 300,000 deaths in the United States annually.

What causes obesity?

There are three primary factors that interact. One is genetics.

People can inherit a tendency to be obese from their parents. Studies suggest that a person has a 25% higher chance of becoming obese if their parents are obese. If you have a parent who is obese, it does not mean that you are destined to be obese as well.

Another factor is a person’s metabolism. We probably all have friends who seem to be able to eat anything they want and never gain an ounce. We probably also have friends that will gain a few pounds just by looking at dessert (that’s me in case you’re wondering).

Metabolism changes with age.

As we get older, our bodies’ metabolism decreases compared to when we were younger.

Lastly, lifestyle is a major factor.

The key is in the choices you make about what and how much to eat and how active you are.

It’s important to start with good nutrition by consuming a good balance of nutrient-dense foods to meet your body’s energy and nutritional needs. The 2015–2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans at www.health.gov is a good source of information.

The number of calories that your body needs depends on your gender, age and activity level. For example, an active 30-year-old woman needs about 2,400 calories per day, while a sedentary 55-yearold man only needs about 2,000 calories per day.

If you are currently at a healthy BMI, eating about as many calories as you burn daily will help you maintain that. If you are overweight, you must burn slightly more calories than you eat in order to lose weight. Check with your doctor for help developing a plan.

A nutritionist or dietician can also be helpful.

The choices you make can help to improve your health and wellbeing. There is lots of information and help available online, in your community and from your doctor! Here’s to your health!

Matilda is a little girl with astonishing wit, intelligence and psychokinetic powers. She’s unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher, the highly loveable Miss Honey. Over

the course of her first term at school, Matilda and Miss Honey have a profound effect on each other’s lives, as Miss Honey begins not only to recognize but also appreciate Matilda’s extraordinary personality.

Matilda’s school life isn’t completely smooth sailing, however – the school’s mean headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and just loves thinking up new punishments for those who don’t abide by her rules. But Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts, and could be the school pupils’ saving grace!

The MTS production will be directed by Doug Montoya & Kristin Berg who are Co-Artistic Directors of Albuquerque’s Cardboard Playhouse, with Musical Direction provided by Madi Frost, and Choreography by Danae Otero.

Holidays Mark The Most Charitable Time Of The Year

Local Food Banks Need Donations And Volunteers Year-Round

he presence of bell ringers beside red donation kettles is a common sight outside stores throughout the holiday season. The Salvation Army’s visibility signals the time of year for increased charitable giving and helps raise our awareness of others in need.

A whopping 30 percent of philanthropic donations occurs in December, according to nonprofitsource.com, but there are many worthy non-profit organizations in Albuquerque that rely on donor support year-round.

Local food banks serve a vital need throughout the state, as New Mexico continues to rank among the worst in the nation for poverty and hunger. Nearly one in five New Mexicans (20 percent) live below poverty, and about 16 percent of the state population is at risk of hunger, compared with a national average

of 12.5 percent. For our youngest and our oldest, the statistics are even worse. One in four children (25 percent) do not know where their next meal will come from.

New Mexico ranks third in the U.S. for food insecurity among seniors (age 60+), with 20 percent of the population at risk for hunger.

Albuquerque is fortunate to have several food banks working to serve a variety of populations in our community.

Silver Horizons is a food market serving 4,000 seniors monthly from Santa Fe to Belen. The grassroots nonprofit, which will be celebrating its 40th anniversary next year, strives to provide two weeks’ worth of groceries at no cost to residents age 50 and older. Instead of handing out pre-packaged food, Silver Horizons has created a market that allows seniors to shop with a grocery cart and select their own items.

“It’s a comprehensive market where seniors can shop with dignity,” said executive director Ron Hidalgo. “Many of our clients live off of $700 to $900 a month.

Thirty percent of these are raising grandchildren. We provide them with groceries such as bread, produce, paper goods, including diapers, and pet food.”

Additionally, Silver Horizons assists impoverished seniors with internet access, propane, firewood and a landline telephone should the need arise for 911 emergency service.

“We try to help seniors throughout the year because they struggle every day,” Hidalgo said. “We’ll accommodate anyone who would like to come in and volunteer or give during the holidays, but we really need them the other 10 months, as well. If they could save that same spirit for the new year and later,

we could really use it in January, February, March...” To volunteer, host a food drive or donate financially, call 884-3881.

“Volunteers should be in relatively good health, able to lift up to 10 pounds or so, and able to stand for long periods of time,” said Roadrunner communications officer Sonya Warwick. “We have several groups who come in regularly, including a Kiwanis group, and other retirees who come in once a week. They use their time here as an opportunity to socialize, to stay active and get out and move. We ask for a two-hour commitment, which involves some training, and that you reserve a time to come in by calling 349-8841 to register.”

ABQ Christmas Lights Tours

ickets for the annual ABQ Ride Luminaria Tour went on sale in mid-November and sold out within hours. But if you aren’t among the 3,600 ticket holders for the popular bus tour, there are still plenty of alternatives in Albuquerque to spark your yuletide spirit.

If you’re the outdoors type, you may enjoy Routes Bicycle Rentals and Tours’ Holiday Lights

and Luminaria Bike Tour. It takes cyclists to the same locales as ABQ Ride, including Old Town and the Albuquerque Country Club area. Rent a “twinkle light” bike strewn with holiday lights or take your own to participate.

Self-guided walking tours of these popular festive sites are always an option.

Dress in layers with comfortable shoes, and be prepared to walk for some distance because of the crowds. A balloon glow occurs at the country club at dusk on Christmas Eve. The Old Town Holiday Stroll and Tree Lighting takes place annually on the first Friday in December to kick off the holiday shopping season. A variety of entertainment and activities will be taking place throughout Old Town, including at the Albuquerque Museum, the Natural History Museum, and at Explora.

Shops will stay open late for purchasing uniquely New Mexican crafts and gifts. This year’s Holiday Stroll is scheduled for December 6, with the tree lighting at dusk.

The same evening, the University of New Mexico

presents its oldest student tradition, the Hanging of the Greens, when students carol across campus to ultimately present UNM’s president with a wreath. The event also boasts an impressive display of 14,000 luminarias. It is scheduled to begin at the UNM Bookstore and conclude after the caroling at a reception in Hodgin Hall Alumni Center. ratitude and thanksgiving abound this time of year as we celebrate the holiday season. While many of us may be “feeling the love,” some less fortunate individuals may be suffering from loneliness, loss and poverty.

As seniors face the holidays, family may be far away or have passed on. How can a senior make a possible blue Christmas into a true Christmas? If you are fortunate enough to be mobile, consider getting out into the community to volunteer to take joy to others.

You can call a local hospital and inquire about ways to spread holiday cheer to sick children or to patients who have to spend the holidays in a hospital bed. Another option may be to serve a meal to

Turn A Blue Christmas Into A True Christmas the homeless. The Salvation Army and many other groups offer meals on Christmas morning. Isn’t giving your time to someone who will really cherish it the best gift of all?

Think of yourself as well. Plan your day to include communicating with friends, family and acquaintances. Technology like FaceTime or Skype makes keeping in touch easier than ever. Consider inviting a few friends to gather to watch a classic movie or two.

If a loved one lives in an assisted living facility, coordinate with that locale to provide holiday activities.

You might also organize children’s groups to visit seniors, sing some carols or take small gifts to those living in care facilities. Smiles and blessings will persevere by baking cookies or delivering giving-tree gifts to a nursing home or a longterm care facility.

Be mindful that not all people of faith or cultures celebrate Christmas. Those of Jewish faith

This eight-day festival of lights is celebrated by a nightly menorah lighting, and special prayers and foods. Chanukah memorializes a Jewish army victory that resulted in the reclaiming of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. As a symbol of reclaiming the temple, the menorah was to be lit. However, only a single cruse of olive oil was available. Despite the paucity of olive oil, the menorah lit and stayed lit for eight days. Chanukah celebrates this miracle.

Buddhists see similarities between Buddhism and Christianity during the holiday season. Buddhists celebrate the holidays by hanging decorations in their temples, sending cards to loved ones, holding late night vigils, and occasionally listening to Christmas music.

Hindus celebrate December with a five-day holiday called Pancha Ganapati. The celebration begins on December 21 to commemorate

the elephant-headed lord of culture and new beginnings. Hindu festivities include gift giving, feasts, decorating homes with pine boughs or durva grass, as well as lights and ornaments. The major portion of the celebration involves putting up a statue of Ganesha in the home and dressing it for each day of the celebration in colors of yellow, blue, red, green and orange.

Kwanzaa is celebrated by PanAfricans between December 26 and January 1. It is based on honoring seven principles promoting communitarian African philosophy.

December 21 is the day Hopi and Zuni pueblos celebrate Soyal. This is the shortest day of the year, and the purpose of acknowledging this day is to awaken the sun and return its warmth.

No matter how or what you celebrate this December, keep in mind this is the season of peace, tolerance and gratitude. Happy holidays to all.

Ronald McDonald Family Rooms at Presbyterian and UNM Hospitals The Ronald McDonald Family Rooms at Presbyterian and UNM hospitals offer a place for parents to rest and regroup right at the hospital, just moments away from their sick child. The Family Rooms are open seven days a week and are staffed by hospital volunteers.

The Family room volunteers greet families, maintain visitor data, stock food, drinks, and help families with their needs. Volunteers are asked to work one, three hour shift per week.

Shalom House: David Specter Shalom House offers a complete package of senior living and care services. Residents are independent seniors who need a little help sometimes. Silver Horizons - Silver Helping Seniors: Every month, Silver Horizons partners with the City of Albuquerque to provide free groceries to over 3,500 seniors, and to about 1,200 grandchildren many of these seniors are raising.

some rodenticides are very toxic.

One toxic rodenticide contains Bromadiolone, classified as an Extremely Hazardous Substance in the United States. It is subject to strict reporting requirements by facilities that produce, store or use it in significant quantities.

Nevertheless, many rodenticides containing Bromaliodone are sold in stores or online. So, anyone can buy it even though the Environmental Protection Agency states it should only be used by professionals. This leads to illegal misuse by the public. Some baits are in chunk form, which people toss into the woods or desert to kill coyotes or other “pest” animals.

It will kill any animals that eat it. Wildlife or pets may eat these baits directly or they may eat a poisoned animal and die. For these reasons, labels clearly state that the bait must be placed in bait stations so only rodents can get it. When you violate the label, you violate the law.

In short, rodenticides of any kind should never be used. There are ways to control rodents without endangering other animals.

Keep in mind, too, when controlling rodents in any way

that the plague is an issue in New Mexico. The state has about approximately 107 species of fleas, and about a third of them are known possible vectors of the plague. Many fleas feed on rodents and are possible vectors of the plague. When the rodents die, any fleas on their body will leave and look for another food source, which can be a family pet or even a person. If the flea carries plague, the disease can be transmitted.
