ome celebrate the holidays at the National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC) on Dec. 15-17 with Festival Ballet Albuquerque’s Nutcracker Ballet in the Land of Enchantment. This beloved holiday classic comes to life with the help of choreography

by Patricia Dickinson Wells and a full live orchestra under the baton of Maestro Guillermo Figueroa.

Set in the late 1800s in territorial New Mexico, this rendition of the Nutcracker offers many surprises, including Spanish and flamenco dancers, dancing southwestern snakes, sheep and shepherdesses, hummingbirds, a lively fandango, and a storyteller doll with children.

You’ll still see traditional favorites, such as the Sugar Plum Fairy, Snowflakes, and Flowers, but you’ll also get to experience beautiful sets, lavish western Victorian-era costumes in the first-act Party, and never-beforeseen pyrotechnics in the Battle that will light up the stage in this all-new production.

The Lights Of Madrid

A

popular destination for shopping and sightseeing this time of year is the little town of Madrid. Nestled against the slopes of the Ortiz Mountains, it is about 45 miles northeast of Albuquerque on NM Highway 14. The lights and tinsel that decorate the town at Christmastime are the modern revival of a tradition that began in the mid1920s when Madrid was a thriving coal-mining town, home to about 2,500 people.

Casual coal-digging in the area began as early as 1835, but didn’t become mechanized until the arrival of the Santa Fe Railroad in 1880. The railroad needed coal to fuel its steam locomotives, so it purchased the land and began mining both hard (anthracite) and soft (bituminous) coal.

In 1906, the railroad leased the mining operation to George Kaseman, an Albuquerque coal dealer. After several years, Kaseman brought in Oscar Huber as superintendent. When Kaseman was killed in an oil well explosion near Hobbs in 1938, Huber took over the lease, and a few years later purchased the entire operation from the railroad, along with the 360acre town site. The Kaseman-Huber years, from 1919 to just after World

War II, were boom times for Madrid.

In addition to overseeing the mines, Huber transformed the town. Under his administration, Madrid became the epitome of a “company town.”

The coal company owned everything, including the miners’ homes. It operated the electrical generating plant (coal-fired, of course), the municipal water system, the garbage service and the six-room hospital. It ran all the businesses, which included a hotel, a tavern, a gas station, a car dealership and several stores. During Prohibition, it was even a partner in a clandestine winery. That’s according to Huber’s son Joe, who published a 20-page booklet titled “The Story of Madrid New Mexico” in 1963. Credit was extended to employees in the form of scrip or tokens that could only be used for purchases at companyowned enterprises.

To discourage union organizing, Huber tried to devise ways to keep his workers busy in their off hours.

One was the “Employees’ Club” to which the miners paid dues averaging 75 cents a month. The club undertook various civic improvements and beautification projects, and sponsored a championship baseball team and a brass band, among other activities.

Apparently his strategy worked, for no union ever gained much traction in Madrid. Although there was

some complaining, on the whole people seemed content with this paternalistic system.

By far the club’s most memorable project was the annual Christmas light display, which grew more elaborate year by year. Homes, trees, streets and buildings were festooned with thousands of colored lights. On the hillsides surrounding the town brightly illuminated wooden figures depicted the biblical Christmas story, including the City of Bethlehem, with angels descending from on high, moved by hidden cables. In another scene, the Holy Family’s flight into Egypt was represented by plywood pyramids and a giant sphinx. More secular figures like Santa and his reindeer, toys and candy canes were also scattered among the juniperstudded hills.

Lines of cars stretched for miles along the unpaved highway as folks drove out from Albuquerque and Santa Fe to see the lights. Airliners detoured from their regular routes to treat their passengers to an aerial view.

The lights were already up by the 7th of December, 1941, when the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor plunged the U.S. into World War II. After that Christmas they would never be lit again.

The plywood figures were stored away in the cellar of the village

schoolhouse, where they remained until the early 1960s. They were then turned over to the Gallup Jaycees club. The Jaycees recreated the display on a smaller scale in a canyon on the outskirts of Gallup for several years until the figures were lost in a fire that destroyed the building where they were stored.

In the postwar world, as diesel engines replaced steam locomotives and pipelines brought cheaper, cleaner natural gas to New Mexico cities, the demand for coal dropped. In 1954, the Madrid mines shut down permanently.

Huber died in 1962. The town he had so lovingly nurtured fell into disrepair, ravaged by weather and vandalism.

His son put the entire town on the market for $500,000 in the early 1970s but couldn’t find a buyer.

Finally he subdivided the property and sold off the lots and houses individually. They were bought up within weeks, mostly by young people, some going for as little as $1,500. Suddenly Madrid was reborn as a counterculture mecca, which eventually evolved into the artsy community of today.

Shops and galleries in Madrid will be holding an open house each weekend until Christmas. The annual Christmas parade is scheduled for the evening of December 2.

ow that the holidays are coming up, what do I need to know about eating right?

It is important to understand how food provides your body with the nutrients it needs to keep you strong and healthy. The basic components in food include protein, carbohydrates and fat.

Protein and carbohydrates each contain four calories per gram.

Fat contains nine calories per gram. One ounce of lean protein or carbohydrates has about 112 calories, and one ounce of fat has 252 calories.

What are the right amounts and types of nutrients for me to focus on?

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans 20152020, which can be found at https://health.gov, suggests two main goals. The first goal is to maintain calorie balance over time to achieve and sustain a healthy weight.

This means to consume only enough calories from foods and beverages to meet your body’s

energy needs and to be physically active. The second goal is to consume nutrient-dense foods and beverages. That means vegetables, fruits, whole grains, fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products, seafood, lean meats, poultry, eggs, beans, peas, nuts and seeds.

What types of food should I avoid?

Try to limit your intake of food that contains sweeteners, saturated fats, trans fatty acids and refined grains, which are grains that have the fiber removed. Check food labels to find this information. Also watch the amount of sodium in the food you eat. Many processed foods have very high sodium content. Limiting your sodium intake is especially important if you have high blood pressure, diabetes, chronic kidney disease or heart disease.

How many calories do I need each day?

That depends mainly on your age, gender and activity level.

A sedentary lifestyle generally includes only the light physical

activity associated with typical day-to-day life, such as bathing, cooking, shopping and doing household chores. A moderately active lifestyle includes physical activity equivalent to walking about 1.5 to three miles per day at three to four miles per hour, in addition to typical day-to-day activities. An active lifestyle includes physical activity equivalent to walking more than three miles per day at three to four miles per hour.

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2015-2020 has a chart of estimated calorie needs based on age, gender and activity level.

For example, a 55-year-old woman with a sedentary lifestyle may need only 1,600 calories a day, whereas a 22-year-old man with an active lifestyle may need up to 3,000 calories daily.

I really enjoy all the delicious food at family get-togethers and holiday parties. What are some tips I should keep in mind for eating during the holidays? (continued on next page)

There is nothing wrong with enjoying yourself during the holidays or any other time of the year. The key is to pace yourself and enjoy in moderation. Here are some thoughts that might help: • Be realistic. Don’t try to lose weight over the holidays; just maintain your current weight.

• Set aside time to exercise. Take at least two, brisk 15-minute walks every day.

• Don’t skip meals. Eat healthy snacks in between meals so you don’t get really hungry and overeat.

• Eat slowly and only until you are satisfied, not stuffed.

• Choose your beverages carefully. Alcoholic and sweetened drinks can add up to a lot of calories.

• In addition to the holiday goodies, eat low-fat foods and fruits and vegetables as much as you can.

Food diaries are a way for you to track your eating habits on a daily basis. By documenting everything you eat and drink, you can get a much better picture of what you are consuming and the number of calories involved. Clinical studies have shown that people who regularly maintain their food diary are more likely to be successful in losing weight and keeping it off.

The holidays are the time of year to be with friends and family. Enjoy all the offerings of the season and stay active. Here’s to your health!

Merry Christmas Bird Count!

he National Audubon Society will conduct its 118th annual Christmas Bird Count this winter between Dec. 14 and Jan. 5, 2018. It is the longest running citizen science project in the United States, and is a study of long-term health and status of bird populations across North America.

In a 2014 Climate Change Report, Audubon issued a startling forecast for birds on the continent. Of 588 species, more than half are likely to be in trouble by 2080, with 314 species losing more than 50 percent of their current climatic range

(www.audubon.org/history). Among those species facing potential loss of habitat are the three species of Rosy Finches currently studied on Sandia Crest.

GET INVOLVED In and near New Mexico, a total of 34 bird counts are being organized this year (http://nm.audubon.org/ nm-christmas-bird-count). New Mexico’s counters also are involved in events in Portal, AZ.; Janos, Mexico; Guadalupe Mountains, TX, and Pagosa Springs, CO. Squeezing all those events into the 23 days of the count period can be a challenge, with Bosque del Apache competing with the Sandia Mountains and Milnesand competing with Orilla Verde.

Nancy Cox and her husband, Steve, have been participating since the late 1980s. They are the compilers for two counts on the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge near Bernardo. If you want to participate, call Nancy or Steve at 345-2385 for more information.

“It’s a lot of fun,” Nancy Cox says. “I wish there were more days in the week so we could get more people involved.” The Sevilleta and Five Points counts are held during the week because other more

accessible places absorb many observers. Sevilleta is not open to the public on a daily basis, Cox says, and therefore lacks certain creature comforts. “Once you leave the refuge headquarters, there are no facilities; you need to bring along your own water and everything else you might need.”

The Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge in Albuquerque’s South Valley is probably a better choice for birders who want to do a first bird count. That event is scheduled for Dec. 16, says refuge employee and count organizer Ariel Elliott, 933-4924.

“We are open to new volunteers,” Elliott says. “We usually have 28 to 30 observers of all ages, and last year we counted 88 species.”

Among her favorite species are the Bald Eagles that fly over the Rio Grande and cottonwood bosque on Valle de Oro’s west boundary.

“Last year there were eight,” she says. Prairie Falcons and Peregrine Falcons also made the count last year.

The Sandia Mountain count is scheduled for Dec. 26, and Nick Pederson says he averages 35 observers and the majority of them are 50 or older.

“We will do it no matter the weather,” says Pederson, a wildlife biologist with the City of Albuquerque. “It would take a storm that keeps people from getting out of their driveways to cancel this count.”

The 10-year average for species observed is 71, and the high is 81 species. The counts have included Pacific and Winter Wrens, Brown Thrashers, Acorn Woodpeckers, Pine Grosbecks, Harris and Golden Crown Sparrows.

Pederson started birding at the age of 12 when he was part of the Junior Ranger Program at the Rio Grande Nature Center. Following that he started going on the Saturday morning bird walks at the Nature Center, teaming up with some older birders who took him along on birding trips to Arizona and Texas.

Colds start when cold viruses get in your nose. Viruses multiply fast. If you don’t stop them early, they spread and cause misery.

But scientists have found a quick way to kill a virus. Touch it with copper. Researchers at labs and universities agree, copper is “antimicrobial.” It kills microbes, such as viruses and bacteria, just by touch.

Santa Fe Spotlight Santa Fe Botanical Garden Presents Winter Light Glow

ringing light back to the world during the longest nights of the year is a consistent winter theme that crosses many cultures. To celebrate light and add a little to our dark evenings, the Santa Fe Botanical Garden on Museum Hill is hosting its fifth seasonal holiday party, the Winter Lights GLOW, beginning Dec. 15. The party continues through New Year’s Eve, with the exception of Dec. 24 and 25., This year’s theme is “Bridging Time.”

Visiting hours are 5 to 8 p.m. nightly, and last entry is at 7:30.

Children younger than 12 get in free, and seniors 65 and older pay $9 at the door. Adult non-members pay $10. Discounted tickets may be purchased online. The event usually draws about 2,500 people.

TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE “This very morning I got a call from a guy who was 80, and he lost $200,000,” says Jennie Lusk, an attorney with the New Mexico Office of the Attorney General.

“He lost his money and his family because they were so mad at him.”

Lusk works within the Consumer Protection Division, and she gets to hear a lot of sad stories from older folks who have fallen to one scam or another. The common ones, she says, are: the grandparent scam, home repair/improvement scams, computer scams and IRS scams.

The Attorney General’s office issues a scam alert almost weekly.

“There are some general cautions seniors should observe,” Lusk says.

“Con artists force you to make decisions fast and may threaten you.

Con artists often disguise their real numbers, using fake caller IDs. Con artists sometimes pretend to be the government, the IRS for example.”

One theme that repeatedly appears in cautionary literature for seniors is that you should never provide personal or financial information.

“Never give out or confirm sensitive information like your bank account, credit card or Social

Security numbers unless you know the person you are dealing with,” Lusk says.

“A lot of seniors lack the cynicism younger people seem to have,” she says. “And a lot of seniors are just lonely; they don’t have much of anybody to talk to, and this friendly voice on the phone that wants to talk to them can be very appealing.”

“Every time I’ve presented on identity theft or scams, almost everyone in the audience has a story about someone they know who got taken advantage of, or about a near-miss they had,” McGuire says.

Identity theft is the most common problem facing the seniors who use the law office.

When it comes to scams, McGuire also suggests visiting AARP’s “The Con Artist Playbook” to help defend yourself against scammers. (http:// www.aarp.org/content/dam/aarp/ money/scams_fraud/2014-09/TheCon-Artists-Playbook-AARP.PDF) Scammers will call as many as 50 to 60 times a day, the playbook says, and they have fleeced seniors out of $18 billion. They succeed by playing on emotions and trust.

By triggering emotional responses in victims, the scammers may get you to make a decision before you can logically think about what they are saying.

“Scammers target people through a wide range of media - coldcalls, mass-mailings, Internet pop-up ads, phishing emails, etc.,” McGuire says.

Identity theft thieves don’t always make direct contact with their victims, obtaining personal information via hacking, mail theft, and by putting card-skimmers on ATMs or gas pumps. They may make purchases with your credit card, get credit cards in your name, or take out loans using your name.

REPORT SCAMS If you do fall victim to a scam, be sure to report it both to the police and to the Federal Trade Commission (http://www. ftccomplaintassistant.gov). A police report will help you dispute bills for purchases you never made. The Senior Citizens Law Office says you may be held fully liable if you don’t dispute fraudulent charges within 60 days.

The golden years are supposed to be relaxing, a time of less stress and more leisure, but remember that there are criminals out there who don’t want to work as hard as you did. A little cynicism, Lusk says, can go a long way toward protecting your future.

Dark Skies Of Albuquerque Once Again Backdrop For Lights Galore

he clear and dark skies of an Albuquerque winter will be the backdrop once again for lights galore this holiday season. From festive LED displays to luminaria tours, Albuquerque families of all ages can witness wintry wonderlands through the end of the year. Grab your gloves and head out to take in all that twinkles.

• From Dec. 18-24, hop aboard one of the Albuquerque Trolley Company’s cars for their Trolley of Lights tour. The tours begin downtown, wind along Rio Grande, and stretch through Los Ranchos to take visitors through luminaria- and light-filled neighborhoods. Book early, because these fun excursions sell out quickly. Abqtrolley.com or 505-200-2642. Tickets cost $25 for adults and $15 for children.

• More than 500 individual light displays blanket the Albuquerque Botanic Gardens through Dec. 30 (except for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day). The city’s River of Lights gets better every year,

Thousands of people stroll through the 36-acre park to take in the animated displays, lighted sculptures and more at the annual holiday light festival. • This year marks the 53rd season for the Old Town Luminaria Tour, which takes place every Christmas Eve. out for 47 years. For the fourth year, Belen’s Harvey House Museum is home to the legendary and luminous display. The event features 300,000 lights, more than 100 Christmas trees, multiple nativity scenes, plus vintage and homemade Christmas decorations. The museum also hosts food, crafts and music at this free event. (Donations are appreciated and help defray costs as well as assist local charities.) Open every day from 5-9 p.m. through Dec. 30.

Skip The Holiday Shopping Crowds

he crowds can be one of the most difficult parts of the season.

This year, consider trying to skip the hordes of holiday shoppers while supporting local businesses. We have put together a fun list of alternative spots that may make your gift-finding a bit merrier and help you think outside the big-box stores.

Holiday arts and crafts markets have been buzzing since mid-November, and with good reason. Savvy shoppers know that all some of us really want for Christmas is an assortment of delicious homemade jams, some handmade earrings, or one great scarf that goes with everything. The Albuquerque Garden Center is once again hosting its holiday craft fair, where shoppers can pick up gorgeous wreaths, gardens, poinsettias and other living beauties. Additionally, there will be more than 40 local arts and crafts vendors. Stores all along Fourth Street in Los Ranchos will participate, including the many consignment and vintage markets in the area. Central Avenue between Carlisle and Louisiana also features fabulous consignment stores, including a few of the city’s more upscale shops.

For the young people in your life, consider patronizing local businesses and event venues. Concert tickets

from the Launchpad, Sunshine, El Rey, Sister Bar and more make great stocking stuffers, as do theater tickets from stages large and small around town.

Board games have made a magnificent comeback, and Albuquerque has no shortage of cool stores with excellent selections and knowledgeable staffs. Empire Board Game Library, Twin Suns, Golden Gun and Active Imagination are just a few of these hot spots that are sure to help you choose the perfect game for the

strategy lover or card game collector in your life.

For the foodies in your family, go beyond the chiles and hot sauces – though, those are always good gifts – and consider filling up a basket of goodies from local breweries and coffee roasters. A growler full of suds also makes a perfect gift for party hosts this time of year. Most breweries and coffee shops sell gift cards, too, which will help fill out that stocking nicely.

Red And Green Chile To Comfort Our Souls

ed or Green? How about Christmas?

For many New Mexicans, one of the meanings of Christmas is the combination of red and green chile served over an entree.

‘Tis the season for comfort food. Comfort in a bowl for me is green chile stew. For others, it’s red chile. Growing up in Barelas, my mom and dad made both spectacularly.

Several years ago, I entered my green chile stew recipe in the New Mexico Chile Cookoff, which consisted of red chile, green chile and salsa categories.

My chile didn’t take first place, but I was thrilled to win the second prize out of dozens of contestants.

Folks here are crazy about their chile; it’s a part of our culture. It’s light and can be a meal in itself, or it will compliment any entree. We put red, green & Christmas on just about everything - meat, beans, potatoes, over breakfast, lunch, dinner, and even on the American classic, hamburgers. Many locals smother red chile sauce instead of gravy over mashed potatoes.

So to celebrate New Mexico’s fiery fixation, here are two recipes courtesy of myself and influenced by my beloved parents, Eduardo and Amalia Otero. I’m also including a lighter version of holiday eggnog.

Liz’s 2nd Place Award-Winning Green Chile Stew

Ingredients: • 2 plastic bags of frozen, roasted green chile, medium to hot, (about 15 chiles per bag), or 2 containers of frozen green chile from your local grocer. I recommend Bueno Hatch Autumn Roast.

• The meat of your choice (steak, chicken or pork). I usually use sirloin; I like it meaty, and so I use about 1-2 lbs.

• 3/4 diced onion • 3-4 potatoes. I use white, cut into cubes about a 3/4-inch in diameter. If you use small potatoes, use 4.

• 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped • 1 can diced fire roasted tomatoes

• 1 can low sodium chicken broth • Water to cover ingredients (24 ounces; I fill the broth can twice with water.)

• Salt, to taste • 1-2 tablespoons oil (vegetable or olive oil) • 1 plus ½ teaspoon garlic powder (approx.)

• 1/2 teaspoon onion powder • 1 rounded teaspoon Knorr tomate para sopas (This is a powered tomato paste.

I’ve made it without this and it works fine).

Directions: Chop the chile; add 1 garlic clove, ½ teaspoon garlic powder and salt. Cut the meat, and season with salt and remaining garlic and onion powder.

Cook meat in the oil. When it’s half cooked (after about 6-7 minutes), add onions and remaining garlic cloves. Cook an additional 5 minutes (until done), then add the chile and canned tomatoes. Cook 5-7 more minutes. Add the chicken broth, water, garlic powder, Knorr, and salt to taste. (Water should cover the chile and meat about an inch). Bring to boil and cook on high for 7 minutes. Add potatoes. Then lower heat, slightly higher than a simmer, cover with the lid (not completely). Let simmer for about 35-40 minutes.

Note: For the Chile Cookoff, I did not use potatoes, but I always do at home.

Ingredients: • About 25 hot chile pods.

• 1 ½ to 2 pounds pork (or beef if preferred) • 1-2 Tablespoons olive oil or vegetable oil • 1 can low sodium chicken broth (I use, but optional) • Salt and garlic powder to taste • 1 Tablespoon chopped onion (optional) • ¼ plus another ¼ teaspoon onion powder • 2 garlic cloves • ¼ teaspoon cumin (or more, depending on your taste) • ¼ teaspoon oregano (or more, depending on your taste) (continued on next page)

Directions: Clean chile pods by removing the stems and seeds. Place in microwave for about 10 seconds (optional) for a smokier flavor. Rinse well, about 2-3 times. Add hot water to chile pods and soak for about a half hour, until chile pods soften.

Fill blender about halfway, add chicken broth, water from the pods, and add salt, garlic cloves, chopped onion, cumin, and oregano. Blend until completely smooth. Repeat (excluding broth) with remaining chile pods. Mix batches together, set aside.

Cook pork with salt, onion powder and garlic powder until done. Add red chile. Bring to boil. Cover and simmer for about an hour on very low.

For a vegetarian version, or if you want red chile sauce, eliminate pork.

Light Holiday Eggnog

A typical cup of spiked eggnog will set you back 440 calories, according to Today Show health and nutrition expert Joy Bauer. “That’s like munching your way through seven sugar cookies or 19 Danish butter cookies,” she states on her website.

Here’s a lighter version of the holiday favorite that will cut the calories in half.

Ingredients: • ½ gallon prepared eggnog • ½ gallon unsweetened vanilla almond milk • 1 cup of good-quality rum Preparation: Add store-bought eggnog and almond milk to a large pitcher and stir to combine.

Pour into festive glasses and add ½ ounce of good quality rum to each.

his time of year is aglow in holiday lights marking seasonal transitions and signifying the arrival of winter. Light plays a significant role in health, especially during the winter months. Learning about the effect light has on the hypothalamus will empower you to re-establish rhythms that support immunity and mood through the darker months of winter. If you’re looking for a gift for someone missing a little sleep, specialty light bulbs and a copy of this article might be your answer.

Solar radiation, including light, occurs in a range of frequencies.

Because the earth’s rotation around the sun is elliptical (close in summer and farther in winter) and also because the earth sits at an axial tilt (23.45 degrees), variations of light occur throughout the day and year. The lower the sun is in the sky, the more atmosphere its radiation must cross to

This lighting pattern was consistent with life on earth until Thomas Edison marketed the incandescent light bulb in 1879 (using the work of over 20 inventors’ versions since 1802).

Nikola Tesla’s alternating current powered Edison’s lighting sprawl across the world. From that point forward, light spread like “wildfire” across modern society, changing nature’s rhythmic order indefinitely.

The retina of the eye houses photoreceptive ganglion cells that sense blue light. That’s the wavelength of light that comes from bright sunlight and from many electronic devices. The body calibrates to day/night cycles that set everything from sleep and hunger to bowel functioning by light cues. This “circadian clock,” located in the hypothalamus, regulates sleep/ wake cycles, temperature, feeding, stress, hormone production, immunity and a variety of other intricate body processes.

Cortisol and melatonin are the specific hormones involved in responding to light exposure, or lack thereof. Cortisol is produced by the

adrenal gland and is the hormone responsible for waking the body. It also has an effect on blood sugar, stress and inflammation. Melatonin, produced by the pineal gland, is the hormone responsible for sleepiness and lowering body temperature.

The International Journal of Molecular Science in April 2013, published that melatonin is “an immune buffer, acting as a stimulant under basal or immunosuppressive conditions or as an anti-inflammatory compound in the presence of exacerbated immune responses, such as acute inflammation.” The roles melatonin and cortisol play in immunity is extensive but not fully understood yet. What we do know is that getting proper nighttime rest is important.

Darker days and lighter nights will throw your system off balance.

Not getting enough natural daytime sunlight and getting too much blue light from the television, computer or phone at night is problematic. It’s essential to consider light hygiene year-round but especially during winter when less daytime sunlight and more blue-light through indoor lighting and devices during the evening occur. Winter is also time

when we need to support our immune systems. Monitoring light exposure can help with that.

There are a few things we can do to try to cut down on evening blue light exposure: • Take a walk early in the day to signal peak wake cycles.

• Minimize evening light.

• Use light bulbs to reduce evening blue light (Brands: Lighting Science/Phillips).

• Wear blue blocker glasses.

• Install light modulating applications for computer devices (f.lux, Twilight) Lights don’t just harm humans; every living organism can be negatively affected by evening light. Astronomers tell me that light pollution is harming their research (see www.darksky.org for more on this).

Let’s do our part and keep the lights as low as possible. Hopefully this inspires you to give the gift of a good night’s rest with a hi-tech light bulb this year.

s the holidays approach we will most certainly hear songs like The Christmas Song painting a picture of “chestnuts roasting on an open fire” and Let It Snow, reminding us that “the weather outside is frightful, but the fire is so delightful.” But before you fire up your fireplace, be aware that a wood-burning fire may exacerbate certain lung conditions. Let’s try to understand this phenomenon.

Wood smoke is a toxic waste.

It sticks to your chimney walls as creosote or it is released into the air as air pollution. Creosote is that gummy, foul-smelling combustible residue that occurs when wood gases are not completely burned.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states that if you’re using a fireplace and smell smoke in your home, the fireplace probably isn’t operating as it’s designed to. In addition to the fireplace smoke that can be released inside the home, research has shown that up to 70 percent of smoke released via the chimney re-enters your home.

The EPA recommends the use of newer fireplace inserts manufactured after 1992. They are cleaner-burning units that comply with federal air quality regulations. If properly installed, well-maintained and used correctly, these newer appliances can reduce outdoor and indoor air pollution resulting from burning wood – and limit your health risks.

Here are a few other helpful tips for your wood-fire safety. If you choose to burn wood, be sure that your wood has been split and stored for at least six months.

Have your fireplace and chimney inspected and cleaned every year by a certified professional.

They will make sure there are no gaps, cracks or unwanted drafts, and will remove any dangerous creosote build-up. Replace your fireplace screen with a tightfitting door. Remember to make sure that the room with the fireplace is well-ventilated.

Natural gas may be an alternative to wood burning, However, gas fireplaces aren’t without their problems either.

They emit nitrogen dioxide, a respiratory irritant. Adequate room ventilation and a properly functioning fireplace are the keys to remaining safe this winter.

We use too many pesticides in our homes and businesses, so I am going to offer some non-toxic options, many of which can be found in my free handbook.

The title of the handbook is “Earth Friendly Pest Management for your Home and Garden and for Commercial Establishments.” All the “pests” mentioned in the book are identified by their scientific names, so you can Google them if you want to confirm their identity.

• There is a very important section on how to use the Pesticide Precautionary Principle when controlling pests. This is something you should require pest control companies to use if you hire one.

The reason this handbook is free is so we can reduce and, hopefully, eliminate the use of pesticides in all public places and in our homes.

Many pest control companies just spray baseboards and power spray pesticides around the outside of your home. This is not good for the environment or for the homeowner in many cases. Most companies use synthetic pyrethroids and they can potentially dangerous.

That classification of pesticides

can cause children to develop leukemia and lymphoma and can even cause a pregnant woman to have an autistic baby. Pest control companies should only use EPA exempt pesticides, as is mentioned in the handbook.

ear Savvy Senior, What tips can you recommend to help make a home safer for aging-in-place? My 76-year-old mother wants to stay living in her own home for as long as possible, but she doesn’t have the money for any big renovations.

Dear Concerned, There are dozens of small adjustments and simple modifications you can do to help make your mom’s home safer and more fit for agingin-place, that won’t cost her much if anything at all. Here are some suggestions to get you started.

Eliminate Trip and Slip Hazards Since falls are the leading cause of home injury among seniors, a good place to start is by arranging or moving your mom’s furniture so there are clear pathways to walk through. Position any electrical or phone cords along the wall so they won’t be a tripping hazard. If she has throw rugs, remove them or use carpet tacks or doublesided tape to secure them. And pick up items on the floor that could cause her

Simple Home Modifications That Can Help Seniors Age In Place to trip like papers, shoes or clothes.

In the bathroom, buy some non-skid rugs for the floors, and a rubber mat or adhesive nonslip strips for the floor of the tub or shower to prevent slipping, and have a carpenter install grab bars in and around the tub/shower and near the toilet for support.

Improve Lighting Good lighting is very important for safe aging-in-place, so check the wattage ratings on your mom’s lamps and light fixtures, and install the brightest bulbs allowed. Purchase some nightlights for the bathroom and in the hallways that are used after dark.

And consider adding under-cabinet task lighting in the kitchen, and motion sensor lights outside the front and back doors and in the driveway.

Hand Helpers If your mom has hand arthritis or problems griping, install lever-style door handles (or doorknob lever adapters), which are easier to use than doorknobs. The same goes for twist knob kitchen or bathroom faucets, which you can replace with a single lever, touch or sensor-style faucet. And

consider replacing knobs on cabinets and drawers with easier-to-grip D-shaped handles.

Easier Living To help make your mom’s kitchen easier to use, organize her cabinets so the things she uses most often are within easy reach without a lot of stooping or using a step stool. Also, consider installing pullout shelves beneath the counter and Lazy Susans in corner cabinets for easier access.

And get her a kitchen stool so she can sit down while she’s working.

In the bathroom for easier and safer bathing, consider purchasing a shower chair and install a hand-held shower so your mom can bathe from a seated position if need be.

Accessibility Solutions If your mom uses a walker or wheelchair, you can adapt her house by installing ramps on entrance steps, and mini-ramps to go over high thresholds.

You can also install “swing-away” or “swing-clear” hinges on her doors to add two inches of width for easier access.

Safety Improvements To keep your mom safe, set her

hot water heater to 120 degrees Fahrenheit or below to prevent scalds.

If she has stairs, put handrails on both sides. Also, install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors on all levels of her house, and place a lightweight, easyto-use ABC-rated fire extinguisher in an easily accessible location in the kitchen.
