thought that immunizations are important only for children.

Is that true?

While immunizations are very important to prevent many serious infectious diseases and their complications in children, they are also critical for the health of adults, especially adults age 65 and older or those with any chronic medical condition.

What immunizations are recommended for older adults?

The immunizations recommended for people 65 and older include an annual influenza vaccination, a Td or Tdap vaccination every 10 years, the shingles vaccination once, and a pneumococcal vaccination. Each are reviewed separately below: Influenza Vaccination Influenza, or flu, is a disease that can lead to serious illness, hospitalization and sometimes death. Even healthy people can get very sick from the flu and spread it to others. Flu season in the United States typically begins in early October and can last as late as May. An annual flu vaccine is the best way to reduce the chances that you will get seasonal flu and spread it to others. It is important to understand that many other viruses can cause cold symptoms that people mistakenly call the flu. Those viruses are not as dangerous as true influenza viruses, and the flu vaccine does not protect against those common cold viruses.

Td or Tdap Vaccination Td vaccine protects against tetanus and diphtheria and a booster is recommended for adults every 10 years. Tetanus can occur if a wound or cut is infected with a specific bacteria that produces tetanus toxin, which causes severe, painful muscle spasms and can be fatal in 20 percent of cases.

Tdap vaccine protects against tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (also known as whooping cough). Any adult age 19 and over who has never received a dose of this vaccine should receive one as soon as possible. Adults age 65 and over should also receive one dose of Tdap.

Shingles Vaccination Shingles is a very painful rash that can occur in people who have previously had chickenpox. It is estimated that one in three people age 60 and over will develop shingles.

The virus that causes chickenpox can remain dormant in the body for years. If it reactivates it usually causes a rash in the distribution of a single nerve root. Sometimes after the rash resolves, chronic, often severe pain known as post-herpetic neuralgia can develop in the same area. The shingles vaccine is a weakened version of the chickenpox virus, and can help

decrease the chances of getting shingles by about half, as well as decrease the chances of developing post-herpetic neuralgia by two-thirds.

People age 60 and over should speak with their physician about whether to get the shingles vaccination.

Pneumococcal Vaccination Various strains of the bacteria Streptococcus pneumoniae, also known as pneumococcus, can cause severe infections, including pneumonia, meningitis, and bloodstream infections known as sepsis. It has been estimated that about 1 million adults will contract pneumococcal pneumonia every year, with from 5 to 7 percent dying from the disease. There are two different pneumococcal vaccines available, pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (Prevnar13®) and pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (Pneumovax23®). One dose of either is recommended for adults age 65 and over.

What else should I know about vaccinations?

Vaccines are very safe and very effective in decreasing the chances of a person contracting a number of serious infectious diseases. If you are allergic to any vaccines or components of a vaccine, you should not receive that vaccine. If you are currently ill or have a fever, you should wait until you are better. If you have any questions, your primary care provider is always a good resource.

If you have concerns about pediatric immunizations, we have found no clinical literature that links vaccines, or components of vaccines, and autism. If you have questions or concerns, this would be a topic to discuss with your child’s or grandchild’s pediatrician.

Receiving the recommended vaccinations is a safe and effective way of decreasing your chances of contracting serious, and sometimes deadly, infectious diseases.

Veterans, Eclipse Watchers Will Be Busy In August

T

he fifth season of Adaptive Sports’ Disabled Veterans Watersports Camp is underway, teaching disabled vets not only how to use a sailboat, kayak and paddleboard but also increasing their confidence and creating camaraderie.

“What I think they like is meeting other people who are in similar situations,” says Jason Cline, staff member with the Adaptive Sports Program serving veterans and their families mostly from Albuquerque and Santa Fe. “They come out to these camps not knowing what they can do,” Cline says, “and they pretty much learn they can do anything as long as there is a way to adapt the equipment.”

Cline has been employed by Adaptive Sports for one year but started volunteering for the program, which began on the ski slopes, seven years ago.

Four watersports camps are being offered this year, and the two remaining are set for Aug. 4-7 at Ute Lake and Sept. 8-10 at Abiquiu Lake. Earlier camps were held at

Elephant Butte Lake and Cochiti.

The camps are limited to about 15-20 people. They are free for veterans, and others pay $50 to attend. Some scholarships are available.

Adaptive Sports has about 400 volunteers to help keep the summer and winter programs running. Originally, this program was under the umbrella of “Wounded Warriors,” but the name changed after the March 2016 firing of Wounded Warriors executives for spending donations on overhead expenses rather than helping veterans.

ECLIPSE VIEWING Star parties are fairly common at New Mexico’s state parks, but for a change of pace consider watching this summer’s solar eclipse in the town of Raton. Pat Walsh, the northeast regional interpretive ranger for State Parks, is scheduled to be at Raton’s Ripley Park on Aug. 21.

The eclipse will occur from 10:20 a.m. to 1:15 p.m., and Walsh

will begin setting up at about 10 a.m.

“We are not in the direct path, so it won’t be a total eclipse,” she said.

Total eclipse seekers will need to visit Wyoming on Aug. 21, but Walsh will have solar telescopes and eclipse glasses so visitors can safely see what can be seen from New Mexico.

Walsh also has some fun toys for children: chalk so that they can draw their shadows on sidewalks, then watch how their shadows move as the sun passes overhead, and ultraviolet beads to create bracelets that change colors as they are exposed to sunlight.

Looking at the sun directly can damage your eyes, so eclipse watchers should take advantage of Walsh’s preparations and equipment. She has been working for New Mexico State Parks as an interpretive ranger for 11 ½ years and is prepared to share information about the sun’s magnetic fields and other fascinating facts. Walsh ordinarily works at Sugarite Canyon State Park, a 6.5-mile drive from Raton. It offers two fishing lakes, campgrounds, horse corrals, hiking trails, lots

of wildlife and wildflowers. The park is part of the location for the Master of the Mountains Adventure Race scheduled for Aug. 25-26.

Participants run six miles along the park’s trails, paddle through a three-mile course on Lake Maloya, then ride bicycles 20 miles to the National Rifle Association’s Whittington Center for a tactical shooting course. New Mexico Harvest Wine Festival

T

o celebrate the end of the grape harvest season, New Mexico Wine is hosting its first ever Harvest Wine Festivals over the Labor Day weekend. Concurrent festivals will be held September 2-4 in both Albuquerque and Las Cruces.

The Harvest Day Festivals will feature wine from dozens of wineries across New Mexico.

With a wide selection of red, white and sparkling wines ranging from the soft and sweet to the bold and dry, there will be something for every palate. Those attending can sample the various wines and take home their favorites by the bottle or case, while taking advantage of special festival prices.

The Albuquerque-based Harvest Wine Festival will take place at Balloon Fiesta Park. In Las Cruces, it will take place at the Southern New Mexico Fairgrounds.

The Harvest Wine Festivals are replacing the New Mexico Wine and Jazz Festival which was traditionally held over the Labor Day weekend. The change of focus for the festivals reflects the new direction that New Mexico Wine, the association representing the state’s wine industry, is heading.

New Mexico Harvest Wine Festival (continued from previous page)

to educate New Mexicans and tourists alike about how the industry is evolving and growing. New Mexico is home to more wineries and varietals than ever before. Many of those new wineries and new varietals will be featured during the Harvest Festivals.

In a recent proclamation, Governor Susana Martinez declared August New Mexico Wine month to honor and celebrate the state’s wineries during the height of harvest season. The Harvest Festivals will mark the end of Wine Month and the unofficial end of harvest season.

In New Mexico, grape harvest season typically begins in July.

This year, the first grapes were harvested July 20. In the weeks that followed, growers spent many

long hours in the field gathering the produce they had spent months cultivating. The Harvest Wine Festival allows them to celebrate all of that hard work by sharing their products with the public.

In addition to over 100 wines, the Harvest Wine Festivals will feature food from a variety of local vendors, as well as the works of local artists and a continuous lineup of live music.

Santa Fe’s Indian Market A Family Tradition

on’t think for a minute that the Santa Fe Indian Market is only two days in August when tribal members sell jewelry and pottery around the plaza. It’s more like a 96-year-old, week-long family reunion with more than 700 artists from 220 recognized tribes and Canadian First Nations displaying their heritage through 10 traditional and contemporary art forms.

Some New Mexico families have been involved in this market for 60 years, says Amanda Crocker, the PR and marketing spokesperson for the non-profit Southwestern Association for Indian Arts. The association produces the Aug. 19-20 market (2017 dates) and a Winter Indian Market.

Crocker offers Santa Clara Pueblo potter Chris Youngblood’s lineage as an example of the family ties. He won the Indian Market’s Best Pottery award in 2014. The next year his mother, Nancy Youngblood, won best pottery at the market. They are fourth- and fifth-generation potters extending back through Mela Youngblood, Margaret Tafoya and Chris’ great, great grandmother Sera Fina Tafoya. This family clings to traditional practices – using local clay and firing techniques – while experimenting with modern designs.

CINEMA SHOWCASE In addition to pottery, participating artists compete in jewelry, sculpture, textiles, paintings, wood carving (kachinas), bead work, baskets and “diverse

arts,” like drums, bows and cradleboards. In all, there is $100,000 in prize money going to competitors.

It is impossible to jam all the judging and showcases into a weekend, so the event actually consumes an entire week. Some events explore Native American literature, music and fashion, and the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian is sponsoring its 17th annual week-long Native cinema film festival at the New Mexico Museum of History.

It starts Aug. 15. The details surrounding the movies will be added to the association’s website, swaia.org, once the Smithsonian determines the titles to be shown.

Some events are being held at the Santa Fe Community Convention Center, 201 W. Marcy St. The Best

of Show ceremony and luncheon is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Aug. 18.

Tickets cost $150. A Sneak Preview of Award Winning Art is set for 2-3:30 p.m. Aug. 18 and tickets cost $150. The General Preview of award winning art is scheduled for 6-8 p.m. Aug. 18. Tickets cost $50.

The Haute Couture fashion show is set for 3-4:30 p.m. Aug. 19 at the Convention Center. Tickets cost $10. The Native American Clothing Contest is scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 20 on the main stage in the plaza and it is free.

The association’s website is easy to negotiate and can answer just about any questions you can think of related to Indian Market.

Classes And Herbs Offer Affordable Health Care

W

hile Congress sputters and gasps as it searches for health care solutions, New Mexicans are finding ways to provide reduced-cost healing through the use of time-honored remedies.

For Eliseo Torres, vice president of student affairs at the University of New Mexico, the practice is called Curanderismo. “I grew up with a mother well versed in herbs and rituals,” he says.

Photo by Martin Frentzel Dara Saville’s interest in herbalism grew out of her graduate studies at UNM: “I was motivated both by a love of nature and a practical need for affordable everyday health care,” she says.

Today, both Torres and Saville offer many classes for those interested in healing through herbs, a large component of the Southwest’s folk medicine.

WORD OF MOUTH Torres has written seven books about Curanderismo, or folk healing.

“In my mother’s day, this was all done through word-of-mouth,” he says. But for him, collecting the information for his books and teaching required lots of travel through Mexico and the Southwest. “It started one year at spring break for 10 days, and it lasted 20 years,” he says.

Among the healers he writes about are Don Pedrito Jaramillo, who tested the faith of those seeking his cures; Nino Fidencio, who died in 1938 but is still honored today through pilgrimages, and Teresita, who was in a coma and was prepared for burial but awoke and became a psychic and a healer.

In addition to spreading the word through his writing, the 70-yearold educator organizes classes. The University of New Mexico offered a two-week program in Curanderismo in July. Additional classes will be offered this fall and in the spring of 2018.

Some classes will be online and free.

More information is available at curanderismo.unm.edu. The success of Torres’ programs has even drawn interest from other schools such as California State UniversityLos Angeles and the University of Illinois-Chicago.

Torres stresses that Curanderismo must be done the right way. “If it’s done correctly, it can be very beneficial to patients and their families,” Torres says. “And first it strives to prevent illness; we also teach that people must eat correctly and exercise.”

Curanderos often specialize in three methods: partera, or midwife; sobador, a masseuse or masseur; or a yerbero, an herbalist.

Common herbs prescribed, Torres says, are osha, which fights gingivitis and can be used to make cough syrup, and manzanilla, which helps with sleep, eases colic in infants, and can fight colds in all ages.

Still Time To Step Out Of The Hot Kitchen And GRILL

s summer grilling season winds down, there is still plenty of time to step out of the hot kitchen into your backyard to enjoy quick and easy light meals.

I opted for recipes to utilize the fresh herbs (sage and rosemary) from my garden. Even though the recipe didn’t call for it, I finished the chicken with fresh parsley. It added freshness to the dish, and it was as simple as sprinkling a few chopped sprigs at the end of the cooking time.

I chose chicken thighs because they are more flavorful and easier on the wallet than chicken breasts.

Here is a recipe from Foodnetwork chef, Anne Burrell, episode, “Why We Love: Lemons.” I also liked it because it was labeled “Easy.”

Ingredients: • Juice and zest of 4 lemons, plus 2 whole lemons

• 5 sprigs fresh rosemary, finely chopped • 5 sprigs fresh sage, finely chopped • 3 cloves garlic, smashed and finely chopped • 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper • Extra-virgin olive oil • 8 chicken thighs, trimmed of excess fat • Kosher salt • Chopped parsley (optional) Directions: In a small bowl, combine the lemon juice and zest, chopped herbs, garlic, crushed red pepper and 1/2 cup of olive oil. Whisk to combine.

Place the chicken thighs in a wide, flat dish so they are in a single layer.

Add the herb mixture. Massage the thighs to coat with the herb mixture.

Step Out And GRILL (continued from previous page) Cover and refrigerate overnight. Note: If doing a quick marinade, leave the chicken out of the fridge for up to 1 hour.

Preheat grill. Brush and oil the grill to clean.

Remove the chicken from the marinade and brush off any excess herbs and oil.

Season the chicken generously with salt, and drizzle with a little bit of fresh olive oil.

Cut the two whole lemons in half and cut the tips off the ends; this will allow the lemons to stand up without rolling around. Place the chicken, skin side down, on the preheated grill. Place the lemons, flesh side down, on the preheated grill. Grill the chicken for 3 to 4 minutes and then rotate the chicken 90 degrees to create the lovely crosshatch pattern. Grill the chicken for another 3 to 4 minutes. Turn the chicken over and grill for another 4 to 5 minutes. Check for doneness. (The chicken should be well cooked.) Check the lemon halves to see if they are beautifully caramelized. Turn over to grill on the bottom for 2 to 3 minutes. Serve the chicken with grilled lemon.

This Michelada Maria is definitely a step up from the traditional cheledas you’ll find at your local grocer.

Yield: 4 servings; Level: Easy Ingredients: • 1/4 cup kosher salt • 3 tablespoons chili powder • 4 limes, quartered • 4 (12-ounce) bottles beer • Red pepper sauce (recommended: Tabasco) • Worcestershire sauce Directions: In a small bowl, combine salt and chili powder. Rub a wedge of lime around the rims of 4 (12-ounce) glasses and dip the glasses into the chili/salt mixture. Squeeze the juice from the lime wedges into the glasses. Pour the beer into each glass and then add a dash each of the red pepper sauce and the Worcestershire sauce. Drink.

Adopting The Right Dog Can Be A Healthy Addition To Your Household

ogs can be a healthful addition to homes of older adults, both in terms of mental and physical support. They provide companionship, may increase the owner’s activity level and generally add to the energy of a household.

But when adopting a dog, just how much energy it will require should be among the many considerations before committing. Cost, personality and age are other factors. To increase the likelihood of finding a good fit, volunteering to work with a variety of dogs at a local adoption agency might be worth some time before committing to a new friend for life.

Petroglyph Animal Hospital advises that the energy level of pets needs to match the energy level of their adoptive owners. Small dogs may be easy to pick up and put in the car, decreasing the likelihood of injury, but they may also be overly energetic. Dachshunds and Jack Russell terriers, for example, are hunting breeds at heart and may have some highenergy behaviors better suited to a more active home.

Alan Shultz, 74, found the perfect match in a Bassett-terrier cross named Wally who he adopted after meeting

the 8-year-old pup at the Watermelon Mountain Ranch in Rio Rancho. The two are now walking partners, taking several brief walks a day to keep them both fit.

“Pets do more for us than we do for them,” Shultz says. “He is a member of our family. He is also the first pet we have had that cares equally for my wife and me.”

Another consideration for seniors is finances.

“While many seniors are enjoying a comfortable retirement, others are living on fixed incomes,” said Pat Anderson, office manager and Certified Veterinary Practice Manager at Petroglyph Animal Hospital. “They may struggle to provide care – particularly food and medical care.”

Those with limited incomes also may need to avoid some breeds – like poodles, Bichon Frises and Yorkies – due to the added expense of grooming.

Some financial assistance and pet food is available for seniors through Animal Humane New Mexico. Its food bank at 615 Virginia SE is open 10 a.m. to noon on Wednesdays and Sundays.

Sam Blankenship, operations manager for Animal Humane, says seniors are some of the best adopters they have.

“Seniors provide a more appropriate

home, especially for dogs,” he says, since dogs have social demands best met by older folks who are not raising children or spending all day at work.

Watermelon’s director, Sara Garrigan, agrees: “They understand the care pets need, because for most seniors this is not their first time to have a pet.”

OPEN MINDS ARE CRITICAL Adopters will learn that animals have their own minds and personalities, so keeping an open mind about an adopted pet can be critical to the success, or failure, of the new relationship, says Petroglyph’s Anderson.

“If you have expectations that the pet will be ‘as smart as the dog you had as a kid,’ the disappointment you feel when your new pet is not ‘that’ pet may be enough to ruin the relationship,” she says.

Adopting from a rescue group that has its pets in foster homes is one way to learn about the pet’s personality and behaviors before adoption.

If adopters discover their new pets are exhibiting behavioral problems, shelters and adoption groups frequently offer classes to help the adopter and pet communicate and establish trust and understanding. “Pets who have their environmental, mental and social needs met are much less likely to be poor

companions,” Anderson says.

The ages of dogs and cats being adopted also plays a role in adopters’ satisfaction with their new companions.

Anderson says dogs between three weeks and 20 weeks experience “fear periods.” During that time, “a puppy’s experiences – good, bad or indifferent – will have a huge impact on his lifelong behavior.”

“If the new parent is willing to shepherd that socialization process carefully, then eight to 10 weeks would be a wonderful time to adopt,” Anderson (continued on next page)

said. “For those without the time, patience, and basic knowledge of proper socialization techniques, an older dog would make more sense.”

MEDICAL CARE Although pet owners often fail to keep their pets’ shots up to date, vaccinations are a critical element of pet care.

Puppies should get their first distemper/parvo vaccines at seven to eight weeks of age, Anderson says, and every three weeks after that until the pup is 20 weeks old. Rabies vaccinations are safe after a pup reaches 12 weeks of age.

“Older dogs without a known vaccine history should start with two distemper/ parvo vaccines three weeks apart,” she says.

Cats are vaccinated on similar schedules, with kittens receiving their first FVRCP vaccine between six and eight weeks, and every three weeks after that until 16 weeks. Boosters should be given every one to three years depending upon the vaccines being used. Feline leukemia vaccinations are recommended for all kittens and cats that go outdoors.

A leukemia booster is recommended every year or two.

VOLUNTEERING Seniors who may not want to provide a “forever home” to an animal can apply to provide temporary foster care

to animals that eventually will be up for adoption through Animal Humane New Mexico. The application is online at https://animalhumanenm.org/.

Volunteering with local pet organizations is also an excellent way to spend time with animals -without committing - while helping both them and the non-profits dedicated to finding them permanent homes. It is also an ideal way to find your perfect match.

Shultz met Wally by serving as a volunteer dog walker at Watermelon, the largest no-kill shelter in New Mexico, which has about 50 to 75 active volunteers, says Garrigan. Its volunteer database has about 2,000 names in it,” she says.

Blankenship says seniors account for the bulk of the 300 volunteers at Animal Humane.

Watermelon Mountain Ranch holds adoption clinics across Rio Rancho and Albuquerque, and the City of Albuquerque has a website with contact information for many rescue groups.

Those with open minds should consider rescuing animals from the “non-traditional” Tiny Toes Rat Rescue or the House Rabbit Society, suggests Anderson. “Rats and rabbits make great pets for seniors,” she says.

Five Steps To Plan For Dealing With Diminished Capacity And Illness (NAPSI)—Aging can change many things in a person’s life, including the ability to manage one’s own money. That sobering reality is behind the creation of a new resource, “Planning for Diminished Capacity and Illness,” issued by the U. S. Securities and Exchange Commission and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB).

These organizations offer this key tip for how to prepare for your financial future: Hope for the best but plan for the worst.

The Problem “Diminished financial capacity” generally refers to a decline in a person’s ability to manage assets to serve his or her best interests. When people of any age lose the capability to manage their finances, they may also become more vulnerable to investment fraud and other forms of financial abuse.

What You Can Do These five steps can help you prepare.

Step 1: Organize your important financial documents. Store them in a safe, easily accessible location.

Give copies to trusted loved ones

or let them know where to find them. When it comes to bank and brokerage statements and account information, make a list of your accounts with account numbers.

Keep a separate list of online bank and brokerage passwords and PINs, and keep both lists in a safe place. List the locations of your safe-deposit boxes and their keys. Keep your mortgage and credit information, insurance policies, retirement benefits and Social Security information easily accessible.

Step 2: If you work with a financial professional, give that person emergency contact information in case he or she can’t reach you or suspects something is wrong.

Discuss what you would consider to be an emergency and specify when your financial professional may contact someone on your behalf.

Step 3: Consider creating a durable financial power of attorney. A financial power of attorney gives someone the legal authority to make financial decisions for you if you cannot. That person is called your agent. A financial power of attorney

differs from a health care power of attorney, which covers only health care decisions.

After signing a durable financial power of attorney, you can still manage your money and property as long as you have the ability to make decisions. Since you’re essentially giving financial decision-making authority to your agent, it’s critical he or she be someone you trust.

Step 4: Keep things up to date. If something changes (for example, you open a new account), keep your information as current as possible.

Your trusted contact may also change over time. Keep your financial professionals informed of changes regarding who has authority to review your account or whom they should contact in an emergency.

Step 5: Speak up if something goes wrong. If you ever think someone is taking advantage of you or that you’ve been the victim of a fraud, speak up. Sadly, sometimes even family members, financial professionals and other people they think they can trust commit financial crimes. If this happens to you or your loved one, you’re not alone—and the sooner you let someone know

about it, the better chance there is of putting an end to it.

f you or someone you know ever feels shaky, has difficulty concentrating, expresses excessive worry, or feels or appears nervous, don’t just chalk it up to jitteriness caused by age. Many medical conditions can cause the feeling of anxiousness.

Overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), diabetes, cardiac rhythm irregularities and chronic lung problems (asthma, and COPD) can lead to nervousness and anxiety.

Pain, irritable bowel syndrome and withdrawal from alcohol or other dependence invoking medications can also lead to these symptoms.

Approximately 10 percent of individuals older than 65 have measurable symptoms of chronic anxiety and almost 20 percent may be expected to take an anxiolytic agent in any given year. Women are

In seniors, there is also a high incidence of depression co-existing with anxiety. Almost 50 percent of senior citizens with major depression also meet the criteria for anxiety, and about one-quarter of those with anxiety meet criteria for major depression. Many with latelife anxiety have had difficulty with anxiety earlier in life.

Recognizing the problem is important. Before embarking on a course of anxiolytic therapy one needs to have an accurate diagnosis.

A thorough history and physical along with blood tests will often rule out other causes for anxiety.

Although the most common treatment of anxiety is an anxiolytic medication, consideration should be given to cognitive behavioural therapy. Cognitive behavioural therapy is the most widely-used non-pharmacologic therapy for anxiety disorders. It is also effective

in the treatment of panic disorder, phobias, social anxiety disorder and generalized anxiety disorder.

CBT helps patients limit cognitive distortions by viewing their worries more realistically and enabling them to make better plans to manage their anxiety. Patients may be asked to record their worries and list evidence that justifies or contradicts the extent of their concerns. CBT also teaches patients that “worrying about worry” maintains anxiety and that avoidance or procrastination are not effective ways to solve problems.

Specific antidepressants with anti-anxiety effects are often effective. This group of medications include SSRIs (Zoloft, Paxil, Lexapro) and SNRIs (Cymbalta, Effexor) to name a few. Benzodiazepines are also used in the management of anxiety. They include many wellknown meds such as Ativan and Xanax. These medications, while

effective, can cause complications: excessive drowsiness, unsteadiness leading to falls and fractures and dependence with risk of withdrawal.

Recognition of the problem is the first step. Excessive “fretting,” difficulty sleeping and inability to “let go of things” can be clues that anxiety may exist. Always seek the help of your health care professional and share your concerns before starting any treatments.

The Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) Advisory Council Needs members to join its efforts in promoting awareness and educating the community about FGP and senior issues. I

n today’s world, there’s a lot of chatter about a “one best way” to eat. I’m not sure there is such a thing, but once you get bad fats, empty carbs and sugars off the table, the next logical question is, “How much meat, if any, should a person consume?”

Farming was the mainstay of my grandfather’s diet growing up. His family ate small amounts of meats from fishing and occasional hunts. He was one of 13 healthy children that lived off the land, never went hungry and all lived past 90. The meals he designed were vegetable centric with a side of meat. He was a “primal flexitarian,” integrating primal/paleo mindsets with the benefits of vegetarianism.

amounts of fiber-based sugars and organic, high quality meats (i.e. grass-fed beef). Additionally, high carbohydrate foods that spike blood sugar and don’t provide essential proteins and fats are eliminated.

Paleo ideology preaches avoiding toxins in processed foods and restricting legumes and grains that produce phytic acids that obstruct optimal nutrient absorption.

Patients on this path often notice a reversal of metabolic disorders and inflammatory conditions. However, those that rely upon meats primarily for protein can experience sluggish digestion, constipation and longterm chronic illnesses.

Vegetarian diets can also accommodate paleo logic by focusing on extremely low carbohydrate, high protein and healthy fat, meatless options. The vegetarian concept encourages the sampling of a wide variety of whole foods. However, some vegetarian meal behaviors include many processed foods, sugars and an excessive reliance upon lowquality grains, which can lead to metabolic disorders. Some folks have gone gluten free, yet they ignore that sugary, gluten free, high carbohydrate, grain snacks are meant to be a rare treat. Vegetarians have to work to construct meals that

offer adequate protein, vitamin B12, calcium, iron and zinc. However, those that master how to source these nutrients and focus on whole food vegetables tend to engender excellent health.

Perhaps a primal flexitarian mindset can more acutely address some of the dangers found at extremes. Heavy meat eaters might explore a higher ratio of green vegetables to meats. Vegetarians can focus upon eating mostly high protein foods, greens and healthy fats, reducing foods like rice and white potatoes.

My patients do best with guides to learn more about optimally digested primal foods. I put together a primal flexitarian list to expand your vocabulary. The focus is to begin to replace portions of meats or low-quality carbs with the foods in these other nutrient-dense areas.

The categories are listed in order from greens to fruits because greens should be the largest portion of your dish, and fruits (high in sugars) should be the smallest part. I’m interested in downsizing my smartphone wireless plan and am looking for the best low-cost options. I use my phone primarily for talking and texting but also need some cellular data for checking my email and other functions when I’m away from WiFi. What can you tell me?

Senior Saver Dear Saver, There are several great low-cost deals I can recommend for older smartphone users who are looking to save some money by paring down their bloated cell phone plan. Here are three good options to consider.

Republic Wireless If you’re an Android smartphone user, Republic Wireless (RepublicWireless.com) offers one of the cheapest deals available for light data users. Republic uses a mixture of WiFi and cellular networks – Sprint and T-Mobile specifically – to transmit calls, texts and data. This patented technology automatically offloads as much as possible to WiFi when available, so you’ll consume less data than you would with traditional carriers.

Low-Cost Wireless Plans For Seniors Who Use Smartphones Republic’s no-contract service plans with cellular data start at only $20/month for unlimited talk, text and 1 gigabyte (GB) of data. If you need more data, the $30/month plan gets you 2GB, and $45/month buys you 4GB. How much data do you need? The best way to find out is to check your phone bills. The average smartphone owner uses between 2GB to 3GB of data each month, but most older smartphone users use less than 1GB. To use Republic you’ll need a compatible Android phone (You can’t currently use Apple iPhones.), or you can buy a new phone through the company. It offers eight Android phones with prices starting at $99.

Consumer Cellular Another excellent low-cost option for lighter data users, and one that caters to older adults is Consumer Cellular (ConsumerCellular.com, 888532-5366). Rated the No.1 wireless service by Consumer Reports seven years running, Consumer Cellular offers a variety of “pay for what you need” talk and connect plans that let you choose exactly what you want.

The company’s talk plans start at $10/month, plus 25 cents per minute used for infrequent callers, or $15/

month for 250 minutes, $20/month for 1,500 minutes, and $30/month for unlimited minutes.

Its connect plans for text messages and cellular data run $2.50 per month for 300 texts and 30 megabytes (MB) of data, $5/month for 2,000 texts and 200MB data, $10/month for unlimited texts and 500MB, $20/month for unlimited texts and 1.5GB, $30/month unlimited texts and 3GB, and $40/ month for unlimited texts and 5GB. Consumer Cellular, which offers 5 percent monthly fee discounts to AARP members, also lets you use your own smartphone by offering free SIM cards. Or, you can purchase a wide variety of Android and Apple iPhones along with the senior-friendly Doro 824 SmartEasy for $100.

Lifeline Program If your income is low enough, another option to check into is the Lifeline Assistance Program. This is a federal program that provides a $9.25 monthly subsidy that could go toward your smartphone service.

To qualify, you’ll need to show that your annual household income is at or below 135 percent of the Federal Poverty Guidelines – which is $16,281 for one person, or $21,924 for two - or, that you’re receiving certain types of government benefits, such as

Medicaid, food stamps, SSI, public housing assistance, veterans pension or survivor’s pension benefit, or live on federally recognized tribal lands.

To apply, contact a wireless provider in your area that participates in the Lifeline program (see LifelineSupport. org or call 800-234-9473) and ask for an application form. Be sure to check all wireless providers in your state because some offer better services – like a free smartphone, monthly talk time minutes, unlimited texting and some cellular data – than others.
