As Summer Winds Down, There Is Still Time For A Vacation

s the summer winds down, you might not have had a chance to travel or take a vacation like you wanted to. Not to worry. In this final article in our summer staycation series, we’ve gathered some lastminute summer get-away ideas that feel like they’re a world away but are very close to home.

Albuquerque and the surrounding area has its share of world-class accommodations with international flare that will make you feel as if you’ve stepped into another universe.

One is the Tamaya Resort on the Santa Ana Pueblo near Bernalillo.

Nestled beside the Rio Grande, the resort boasts all of the amenities one would expect, such as golfing, swimming, cycling and horseback riding, and is located on 550 acres of the ancient Tamayame people. Enjoy one of the cultural activities led by a tribe member, or explore the nearby Coronado State Monument where Spanish explorer Francisco Vázquez de Coronado stayed in the winter of

1540 in search of the Seven Cities of Cibola.

Downtown Albuquerque is home to several destination hotels such as Hotel Andaluz, where you can experience private dining in one of six decorated casbahs. The hotel features frequent jazz entertainers in its cavernous lobby.

The city’s newest luxury accommodations can be found at Hotel Chaco at the edge of Old Town. It is designed in a contemporary Native American theme in homage to Chaco Canyon, a World Heritage Site in the Four Corners region that is one of the best examples of ancient Pueblo life. It’s just a three-hour drive from Albuquerque, and the hotel offers a day trip there on Saturdays, complete with a gourmet lunch catered by the hotel’s dining staff. Take advantage of the hotel’s proximity to Old Town and enjoy a historical walking tour provided by the Albuquerque Museum, or participate in an evening ghost tour where you’ll learn about some of the city’s most notorious spirits.

A

ccording to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 37 million people in the United States, or 15% of adults, have chronic kidney disease (CKD). This month’s article addresses questions about CKD and what you can do to decrease your risk for getting the disease.

What do kidneys do?

Kidneys filter the blood in the body to remove waste products and excess fluid. In a healthy person, the total blood volume circulates through the kidneys about forty times a day, or about once every half hour. The kidneys also play an important role in regulating blood levels, bone health, and levels of important chemicals and substances.

What is CKD? CKD occurs when the kidneys do not function properly on an ongoing basis. As a result, the body retains waste products and excess fluid; this can cause anemia, depression, abnormal levels of minerals and

metabolites in your blood, and other complications, including heart disease.

What are the risk factors for getting CKD? Risk factors include family health history, age over 60 and obesity. Diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease also increase risk, especially if poorly controlled. For reasons not well understood, people of AfricanAmerican, Asian, Native American, and Hispanic ethnicity can have a higher risk for CKD. That may be related to the fact that people of those ethnicities have a higher risk for diabetes and high blood pressure, which are the two leading causes of kidney disease.

What are the symptoms of CKD? Most symptoms of CKD are non-specific, which means they can also be caused by other medical conditions. Symptoms can include fatigue, decreased appetite, difficulty concentrating, muscle cramps – especially at night – insomnia, itchy skin and swelling.

How is CKD detected or diagnosed?

People with early kidney disease generally do not have any symptoms. Because of that, it is important to have regular checkups with your doctor, especially if you have any risk factors. As part of an exam, your doctor may order blood and urine tests that will show if there are any early abnormalities that would warrant further evaluation.

What can I do to decrease my risk for CKD? There are many choices you can make to decrease your risk for kidney disease. Healthy behavior choices include following a diet lower in salt and fat, getting regular exercise (30 minutes a day, several days a week) and maintaining a healthy weight for your height.

Other healthy choices include not smoking and limiting alcohol intake.

If you have diabetes, high blood pressure or heart disease, controlling those diseases with help from your doctor is very important to decrease the risk for CKD. If you have already been diagnosed with CKD, controlling those diseases will slow the rate of progression.

Is there treatment for CKD? Once kidney damage occurs, it is usually permanent and there is no treatment that will normalize kidney functions. Treatment is focused on decreasing the effects of complications and decreasing the risk for progression to end stage renal disease, which requires dialysis.

It is important to get regular health checkups by your doctor, who can screen for CKD as well as other diseases. Taking steps to eat better, exercise, and stop smoking can all help decrease your risk for CKD and other conditions. Here’s to your health!

Sanctuary For A Cattle Thief

crimes, including murder-for-hire, heresy and other offenses against the church. Nor did it extend indefinitely, but only long enough for passions to cool so that the accused might receive a fair trial.

This law was in force throughout the colonial period in all parts of Spain’s empire, even in far-flung New Mexico.

In 1993, while researching the history of San Felipe Neri parish in Old Town, the late Jesuit historian Fr. Thomas J. Steele came across an interesting item in church archives concerning an alleged cattle thief who sought sanctuary there in the early 18th century. The following account is based on his report, “Church Buildings and Land in Old Albuquerque.”

Francisco Xavier Romero was born in Mexico City around 1660. He apparently had a bit of education, judging by the good spelling and handwriting evident in some surviving documents.

He had also learned the craft of leatherwork and shoemaking, and may have had some medical training as well. He came to New Mexico in 1693, during the re-settlement that followed the Pueblo Revolt of 1680, and lived

eadlines were made recently when an Iraqi man threatened with deportation left an Albuquerque church where he had lived for the past two years under the aegis of a quasi-legal doctrine known as ecclesiastical asylum, or sanctuary. Many other churches around the country have also offered temporary shelter to undocumented refugees from other countries.

The custom that an individual pursued by the authorities, or by a mob of vigilantes, could seek sanctuary in a house of worship is an ancient one, pre-dating Christianity. It was codified in Spanish law, with certain limitations. A fugitive who managed to reach the consecrated precincts of a church could proclaim, “Mi nombre es Iglesia” (“My name is Church”), thereby identifying himself with the institution and claiming its protection. The parish priest was then obligated to provide food and shelter to the fugitive and to negotiate on his behalf with his pursuers. However, sanctuary was not available to persons charged with some more serious

near Chimayó, in the Santa Cruz Valley north of Santa Fe. There he earned his living as a shoemaker, specializing in the Pueblo-style moccasins called teguas, worn by nearly everyone in the colony. He also functioned as the local surgeon and medical practitioner, possibly because as a leatherworker he possessed sharp cutting tools, awls and needles that could double as surgical instruments. In addition, he was a part-time santero, producing religious paintings on animal hides, many of which he donated to the church at Santa Cruz.

Romero’s résumé would seem to be that of a model citizen. Yet in 1715, he was convicted of stealing and killing an ox belonging to the nearby Pueblo of Pojoaque (or Tesuque, in some accounts) and exiled to El Paso for a period of two years. (Romero claimed that the ox was already dead when he and his sons found it, and he had only salvaged its hide.)

As he made his way south to begin his term of banishment, he passed through the recentlyestablished Villa de Alburquerque.

There he claimed sanctuary at the church of his name-saint, San Francisco Xavier (as San Felipe

was then called). He may have been encouraged to do so by local residents, who had no doctor at the time and were sorely in need of his medical skills, such as they were. They petitioned Gov. Felix Martinez, requesting that Romero be permitted to serve his sentence “not in El Paso, but in this Villa, curing the sick and the injured.”

The governor agreed, stipulating that he render his services free of charge, and also serve the church as sacristan. Later he received a full pardon and even a small grant of land near Santa Cruz, where he resumed his various trades after completing his exile in Albuquerque.

But a decade later Romero was in trouble again. This time he was accused of fondling and propositioning one of his male patients. The outcome of that trial is uncertain. The records having been lost, but it appears he was let off with a warning not to do it again.

At that point Romero drops off the radar screen of history. He would have been approaching 70, a ripe old age for the time, so it’s unlikely he lived many more years.

The date and circumstances of his death are unknown.

Despite having the accommodations and amenities of an upscale hotel, Bailey thinks potential buyers might be surprised at the community’s affordability. “It typically ends up being cheaper to move into one of our communities compared to staying at home. Overture is priced much lower than any assisted or independent living community because we do not offer any sort of care for our residents.”

The community caters to the active senior, touting its proximity to the Sandia Mountains as a great place to hike and ski, and within a few miles of a new, multi-generational center offering a variety of physical and social activities. Overture Albuquerque, billing itself as “carefree and maintenance-free living” with completion slated for 2020, will be accessible to several nearby parks including North Domingo Baca park and a dog park for residents with pets.

While Overture communities tend to attract couples, they also draw women

who don’t want the hassle of dealing with the day-to-day maintenance of home ownership.

“I think the main draw is the sense of community,” says Bailey. “I would say 75 percent of our residents are 6065. A big draw for people who move into one of our communities is that they have grandchildren and want to live closer to them. We also see a lot of people moving here after their spouse has passed away and their family doesn’t want them to be alone...It is a big community of people that are all either in the same stage of their life or close to being in the same stage.”

The Overture Albuquerque business office will be open on the construction site at the beginning of August, with a model home expected to be completed and ready for tours in January 2020.

Mirabal is a world-renowned musician, composer, poet, actor, and screenwriter, as well as a painter, master craftsman, horseman, and farmer. A two-time Grammy award winner and recipient of a 2014 New Mexico Governor’s Excellence in the Arts award, Mirabal is dedicated to keeping alive the centuries-old customs of Taos Pueblo. His 2002 breakthrough PBS special, Music from a Painted Cave, is unsurpassed in Native American theatrical expression.

He is also a leading proponent of world music, and has merged his Indigenous American sound with the music of

Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean, tapping into a planetary pulse with a style that defies categorization.

A former principal dancer with the New York City Ballet, Soto was one of the last dancers to be personally selected by founder George Balanchine when he was 16. He danced featured roles in over 40 ballets, of which more than 35 were created for him. The author of Every Step You Take and the subject of the documentary Water Flowing Together (the name of his Navajo clan), Soto taught partnering and technique classes at the School of American Ballet, where he was a permanent member of the faculty from 1996 until a few years ago. He currently resides in Eagle Nest, NM, and travels the world as a master class guest artist and choreographer.

How Medicare Covers Ambulance Services

D

ear Savvy Senior, How does Medicare cover ambulance services? About three months ago, I took an ambulance to the hospital emergency room because I rarely drive anymore, and I just received a $1,100 bill from the ambulance company.

Surprised Senior Dear Surprised, This is a Medicare issue that confuses many seniors. Yes, Medicare does covers emergency ambulance services and, in limited cases, non-emergency ambulance services too, but only when they’re deemed medically necessary and reasonable. So, what does that means?

First, it means that your medical condition must be serious enough that you need an ambulance to transport you safely to a hospital or other facility where you receive care that Medicare covers.

If a car or taxi could transport you without endangering your health, Medicare won’t pay. For example, Medicare probably won’t pay for an ambulance to take someone with a simple arm fracture to a hospital. But if

he or she goes into shock, or is prone to internal bleeding, ambulance transport may be medically necessary to ensure the patient’s safety on the way. The details make a difference.

Second, the ambulance must take you to the nearest appropriate facility, meaning the closest hospital, critical access hospital, skilled nursing facility or dialysis facility generally equipped to provide the services your illness or injury requires.

It also means that the facility must have a physician or physician specialist available to treat your condition. Thus, Medicare may pay for an ambulance to take you to a more distant hospital if, for example, you are seriously burned, and the nearest hospital doesn’t have burn unit.

Similarly, if you live in a rural area where the nearest hospital equipped to treat you is a two-hour drive away, Medicare will pay. But if you want an ambulance to take you to a more distant hospital because the doctor you prefer has staff privileges there, expect to pay a greater share of the bill. Medicare will cover the cost of ambulance transport to the nearest appropriate facility and no more.

FOUR HILLS

Non-Emergency Situations In limited cases, Medicare will also cover non-emergency ambulance services if such transportation is needed to treat or diagnose your health condition and the use of any other transportation method could endanger your health. Not having another means of transportation is not sufficient for Medicare to pay for services.

Some examples here are if you need transportation to get dialysis or if you are staying in a skilled nursing facility and require medical care. In these cases, a doctor’s order may be required to prove that use of an ambulance is medically necessary.

Ambulance Costs The cost for ambulance services can vary from several hundred to several thousand dollars depending on where you live and how far you’re transported.

Under original Medicare, Part B pays 80 percent of the Medicare-approved amounts for ambulance rides. You, or your Medicare supplemental policy (if you have one), will need to pay the remaining 20 percent.

If you have a Medicare Advantage Plan, it must cover the same services as original Medicare, and may offer some additional transportation services. You’ll need to check with your plan for details.

How to Appeal If an ambulance company bills you for services after Medicare denies payment, but you think the ride was medically necessary, you can appeal (see Medicare.gov/claims-appeals).

Often, a lack of information about a person’s condition or need for services leads to denials.

he most common fly is the house fly. House flies have a gray thorax (where head is connected and wings are attached) with four dark stripes and a mottled abdomen (posterior portion). These flies are considered “filth flies” and will feed on excrement, garbage, carcasses and even human secretions from wounds and mucous membranes.

If you accidentally eat the larvae in contaminated food, they can survive in your intestine. They can harbor over 100 pathogenic organisms and are capable of transmitting more than 65 diseases and bacteria that can cause duodenal and stomach ulcers. House flies are the most common fly in the world.

When you swat a fly, remember that is has an unblurred range of vision of only about 1½ feet. You should aim your flyswatter about 1½ inches behind the fly because when houseflies take off from a horizontal surface, they jump upward and backward. Set out a saucer filled with bubble soap to attract and kill flies. Adult flies eat only sugar, so use some light Karo Syrup, honey or sugar water with 5 percent boric acid or borax baits.

You can also make a good fly trap with some plastic water bottles, apple cider vinegar and some sugar. Cut the tops off the bottles and invert the top into the lower section forming a funnel and tape them together. Put about two inches of apple cider vinegar in the bottle with a quarter teaspoon of sugar. This will attract and catch many kinds of flies, no matter their normal food preference. If you have a large building or yard, you can use gallon size milk jugs cut the same way, with

about three times the vinegar and sugar. A good commercial fly trap is Rescue Fly Traps, available in stores.

Another common fly is the little house fly. Little house flies are dull gray with yellow on the upper abdomen and three dark longitudinal stripes on the top of the thorax. These flies resemble house flies, but they fly in circles in the middle of a room or on a porch and don’t appear to land.

They can lay their eggs in any organic material, including compost piles, pet feces, dead leaves, etc. They have been known to enter the urinary tract of naked sleeping persons and causing urinary myiasis. To prevent these flies from appearing, empty and clean all food handling equipment, dishes and garbage containers, and daily remove and/or bury all animal droppings, fruit and organic debris inside and/or outside. They do like beer, so you can put two packets of aspartame in two inches of beer in an open container to act as a bait for these flies. You can also use a fly swatter with a sticky side to swat them when they are circling.

Also very common are blow flies.

Blow flies are larger than house flies and are normally shiny green, blue, bronze or black. Blow flies feed on decaying animal matter. If you have them in your house, it is an indication of a dead animal in the wall or ceiling.

Occasionally, the only sign of these flies in an early infestation is when the larvae fall from the ceiling void onto the floor. If you can find and remove the carcass of the dead animal they are feeding on, it will speed up their leaving. If you can’t, there isn’t much you can do except be patient and wait for the dead animal to dry up. They can also lay their eggs in dog feces or in any animal matter with a high protein content, including dry cat food.

Blow flies are also used by forensic entomologists to establish the time of death in human fatalities.

Silver Horizons - Silver Helping Seniors: Every month, Silver Horizons partners with the City of Albuquerque to provide free groceries to over 3,500 seniors, and to about 1,200 grandchildren many of these seniors are raising.

Together, we are making a big, positive difference in the lives of so many of our elderly. But we can’t help these struggling seniors without volunteers. Opportunities to help include volunteering in Silver Horizons’ food warehouse, distributing food and helping seniors shop at food markets, and joining our volunteer staff at Silver Horizons’ thrift store. Storehouse New Mexico: Support New Mexico’s largest food pantry. Storehouse provides FREE food to people who are

struggling. Customers select their own food once a calendar month.

Road Runner Food BankHealthy Food Center (HFC): HFC is a medical referral food pantry. People experiencing both food insecurity and a nutrition related chronic condition are screened and referred to HFC. am the product of the dance era. Whether at a wedding, a party, discos or school dances, I was dancing. Little did I know that what I was doing had health benefits. Dancing, for me, was an expression of joy and love of the music that was being played. Of course, socialization and a sense of well-being were beneficial side-effects.

From a young age we are taught to stay active physically and mentally. Whether walking, running, cycling, doing calisthenics or hiking, it doesn’t really matter.

As we age, our body loses muscle mass, coordination and balance, making us more likely to fall and injure ourselves in the course of everyday activities.

Let’s Dance Dancing can help counteract this decline. Dancing can also have positive effects on neurologic and psychological functions.

Recently it has been discovered that our brains can actually regrow cells. This is referred to as neurogenesis. Exercise increases the level of brain-derived neurotrophic factor – a key protein that acts like fertilizer for brain cells by promoting the growth and maintenance of neurons.

Similar to one of the many ways exercise benefits the heart, exercise increases the flow of oxygen to the brain and improves brain function. Exercise, a healthful diet with attention to vegetables, well-controlled blood sugar, stress reduction techniques, and adequate restorative sleep can reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.

Dancing is different from other forms of exercise such as walking, weight-lifting, golf, etc., by virtue of its associated music. Musical rhythms stimulate multiple areas of the brain that interact with each other. The neurochemical

dopamine is increased, which affects motivation, happiness and well-being, along with movement and thinking. Dancing also stimulates both the motor and sensory circuits of the brain. These benefits for older adults stem from a complex set of brain activation.

or those that like to challenge themselves to try dancing. First, you can reach higher intensity than in walking while dancing. It may be for short intervals, but this all adds up, and you get some of the benefits associated with vigorousintensity physical activity.”

Dancing can also be considered a mild bone-loading exercise, which can stimulate bone regeneration and mitigate some of the changes associated with osteoporosis.

Increases in strength, muscle tone and balance as a result of dancing helps reduce fall risk and the consequences of falls such as broken bones and head trauma.

From a psychological standpoint, dancing brings people together, and engages their coordination and memory to complete choreographed dances. Research has also provided data that Parkinson’s patients can benefit from dancing, improving their ambulation and turning skills. The type of dance makes no difference - from boogie to ballroom, country to conga, swing to disco.

Multiple studies have been conducted to determine the cardiovascular and psychological benefits of dancing. In one 12year study of more than 48,000 people from the United Kingdom, a decreased risk of cardiovascular events was associated with moderate intensity dancing. The lead investigator, Dafna Merom, said, “I would advise for those who find walking somewhat boring

hile we’re still in the heat of summer, I can’t help but think of what’s just a month away. Every year I fall in love with the anticipation of fall. I love the excitement of a bountiful harvest, the smell of roasting chile, the bright colors of orange, red and yellow leaves on the trees. Right now, I’m especially looking forward to the morning chill. Fall also provides us with memories and traditions, and each year my family looks forward to a drive to McCall’s Pumpkin Patch, on a mission to find the perfect pumpkins.

When we pull into the parking lot, we have already mapped out in our heads where we want to go first. Ever since she was a very little girl, Anneliese’s favorite thing to do has been to go down the giant slide. Andrew will be itching to get to the track as quickly as possible to race a pedal kart. Lori loves animals, so she will want to spend time at Bunnyville and the goat bridges. Papa will have a vision in his mind of a small, white box filled with his favorite chocolate fudge. My plan is to savor the Country Store, undisturbed and unrushed. I love getting ideas for country decorating for my home, and there are lots of Halloween decorations to consider, too.
