S

ince time immemorial, the river valley between the lofty Sandias and the ancient volcanoes has been home to the Pueblo people. Now known as the Albuquerque Metro Area, that valley is bordered on all sides by several thriving Pueblo tribes, and home to the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center (IPCC) — the Gateway to the 19 Pueblos of New Mexico.

The IPCC is a world-class museum and cultural center located on a parcel of tribal land in the heart of Albuquerque. With interactive permanent and rotating exhibits, hands-on activities, and unique cultural dining and shopping opportunities, it is a truly immersive experience.

April is one of the most exciting months at IPCC, as it is home to the 40th Annual American Indian Week. April 22 – 28 is packed with memorable cultural events and photo opportunities for locals and visitors alike. Several cultural Native dances are held in the mural-lined courtyard every day, and there is a wide range of activities including artist demonstrations, guided tours, an open-air Native arts market, and workshops led by Native art experts from Shumakolowa Native Arts.

The artist demonstrations include Nambé Pueblo potter Martha Romero giving a cooking demonstration in handmade traditional cookware made from hand-gathered micaceous clay, and a comprehensive look at the skill and art of traditional Pueblo potterymaking by Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo potter Clarence Cruz.

There are fascinating and empowering workshops throughout the week. “Symbolism in Native Crafts” led by Andrew Thomas (Navajo) explains the meanings behind the many designs seen in Native arts, while “Evolution of Native American Jewelry” by Shane Smith (Navajo)

explores the history of Native jewelry, and invites visitors to bring their own Native jewelry to ask questions about.

Perhaps the most important one for visitors is “Distinguishing Authentic Native Jewelry” by Isaac Valenzuela (Acoma Pueblo & Navajo), providing attendees with the tools and knowledge to avoid being taken advantage of by unscrupulous distributors of fake Native American jewelry and art.

The last weekend of American Indian Week is unmissable for art lovers as IPCC’s courtyard transforms into a bustling marketplace with dozens of artist booths featuring pottery, jewelry, paintings, and more.

At the American Indian Spring Arts Market, visitors will see a wide range of traditional and contemporary works, and have the opportunity to meet the artists and ask questions about the process, history, and meanings behind their works.

All this activity is sure to build up an appetite, which can be indulged at the onsite Pueblo Harvest restaurant.

Looking For Something To Do? Visit A Museum

T

he Albuquerque metro area is home to a plethora of intriguing museums ranging in size and subject. Some are even internationally renowned. Here are a few we’re featuring this month, as April is the perfect time to visit them with some exciting changes and new exhibits.

Turquoise Museum, 400 2nd St. SW, will be housed in the Gertrude Zachary Castle downtown beginning this month. Their Grand Re-Opening will be on April 6th, and the 8,000-square-foot castle promises to be a unique showcase for some of the most rare and collectible turquoise in the world. Among grand halls, 127 chandeliers and an impressive spiral staircase, the new Turquoise Museum location will contain educational exhibits on mining science, lapidary techniques and turquoise imitations.

National Hispanic Cultural Center, 1701 4th St. SW, showcases the history, art and rich cultural contributions of the Hispanic community in our state. Their latest exhibit, Que Chola!, opened in March, and honors these fiercely strong, yet feminine, Latina women.

New Mexico Steam Locomotive and Railroad Historical Society, 1833 8th St. NW, educates the public about rail transportation.

It is “staffed solely by dedicated volunteers whose mission is to fully restore the Baldwin 4-84 Steam Locomotive, AT&SF 2926, to operational status,” according to the organization’s website. Train enthusiasts can check out the 2926 at the “World Headquarters” downtown.

Holocaust and Intolerance Museum of New Mexico, 616 Central Ave. SW, contains exhibits that commemorate the Holocaust, as well as genocides that occurred to other races in several nations.

These displays feature photographs, memorabilia and artwork, along with a replica of a concentration camp gate.

Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, 2401 12th St. NW, represents each of the 19 tribes in New Mexico and hosts traditional Native American dances every weekend throughout the year. Learn about the origin of the Zia symbol on our state flag in

the center’s current exhibit, “Ours: The Zia Sun.” New Mexico Veterans Memorial, 1100 Louisiana Blvd.

SE, has a small museum on site that is free to the public and open daily from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

Featuring artifacts and stories from New Mexico’s participation in Colonial and Territorial conflicts, to the modern war on terrorism, the museum celebrates our state’s veterans.

Santisima, 328 San Felipe St. NW, is a celebration of all things Dia de Los Muertos, located inside an Old Town art gallery. One reviewer describes Santisima as “hands down best the cultural art museum you’ll find…If you are in Albuquerque, take the time to find this gallery and enjoy the burst of color and life that encompasses the cultures of Mexico and New Mexico.”

Any budding or accomplished author has at some point been where you may be now—on the cusp of writing it down, at the precipice of publishing, or at the gate of needing some sound advice and editing.

The organization provides opportunities for members to become published authors through its monthly online SAGE magazine, as well as through publication of paper and e-book anthologies. Contests are conducted from time to time, as are conferences. This year, SouthWest Writers is partnering with the national Military Writers Society of America for a conference in Albuquerque on September 12th through 15th at the Hotel Albuquerque.

Educational opportunities abound. At SouthWest Writers’ meetings, the program includes a presentation about an aspect of writing. Even seasoned authors learn something new. The Rise And Fall Of The Baron Of Arizona

T

he Old West had no shortage of outlaws, swindlers and con men.

But for sheer audacity, few could match James Addison Reavis, the selfstyled “Baron of Arizona,” who nearly pulled off what would have been the largest land-fraud scheme in American history, had it succeeded.

Reavis was born in Missouri in 1843. He had little formal schooling but demonstrated a flair for fine penmanship at a young age. His early career included a stint in the Confederate Army, where he regularly gave himself furloughs by presenting a pass bearing the forged signature of his commanding officer. When

his superiors began to get wise to his trickery, he deserted and went over to the Union side. There, he put his talents to work forging phony requisitions for supplies that he then sold on the black market.

After the war, he sidestepped possible prosecution by relocating to Brazil, where he lived comfortably for a year on his ill-gotten gains. Returning to St. Louis, he worked as a street-car conductor and traveling salesman before discovering his true calling in real estate.

One day, Reavis was approached by a disreputable medicine-show doctor named George M. Willing Jr., who had come into possession of a sheaf of yellowed parchment that purported to be an 18th-century Spanish land grant in Arizona Territory. He had heard that Reavis had in similar cases been able to close real estate deals by somehow locating the documents needed to

validate shaky titles. Perhaps he could be of help in this matter.

Reavis saw possibilities. They formed a partnership, but before they got around to asserting a claim based on the somewhat questionable documents, Willing unexpectedly died, leaving Reavis in sole possession.

There were many “old Spanish land grants” in circulation in those days. It was the job of the U.S. Office of the Surveyor General to review all claims based on them and confirm those that appeared legitimate before sending them on to Congress for final approval.

Some supporting documentation was usually required to establish a chain of title.

Reavis made several trips to Mexico City and Guadalajara, where he combed the public archives in search of such documents. Not surprisingly, he found them. They confirmed that in 1748 the King of Spain had conveyed to one Don Miguel Nemecio Silva de Peralta y de la Córdoba, in recognition of unspecified services rendered to the Crown, a vast tract of land encompassing almost the entire drainage of the Gila River, from its headwaters near Silver City to its confluence with the Salt River west of Phoenix. Along with it, the

king had conferred upon Don Miguel and his descendants the title “Baron of Arizona.”

In 1883, Reavis filed his claim with the office of the Surveyor General for Arizona in Tucson, presenting certified copies of the wills, deeds and royal decrees he had allegedly discovered.

The news spread quickly throughout the territory. The Peralta Grant, as it came to be called, comprised more than 12 million acres. Within it were numerous farms, ranches and mining operations whose ownership was now suddenly in question.

While the surveyor’s office spent months reviewing the claim, people in the area were getting nervous. Most assumed it was bogus, but on the other hand maybe it wasn’t. Reavis seemed very sure of himself. If he prevailed, their land titles would be worthless.

Better to purchase one of the modestlypriced quitclaim deeds he was offering than to risk being kicked off the land as squatters if the surveyor’s office ruled in his favor. In this climate of uncertainty the “Baron” raked in more than $300,000 (worth several million in today’s dollars). The Southern Pacific Railroad paid him $50,000 for a (continued on next page)

right-of-way it already legally owned.

The owners of the Silver King Mine forked over $25,000 in royalties they did not owe.

Reavis’s “documents” were of course fraudulent. He had carefully studied the official records in the archives he searched until he could duplicate them almost flawlessly. In some cases he altered existing documents to suit his purposes. Others were complete forgeries that he surreptitiously inserted into the archives.

During his year in Brazil, Reavis had learned Portuguese, and later Spanish.

He could speak the language fluently, but his spelling and grammar were weak. That proved to be his undoing.

Without directly accusing Reavis of fraud, the surveyor’s office denied his claim. Fearing that he might be lynched, Reavis quickly left the territory.

At that point, most people would have given up. Not Reavis. In 1887, he returned to file an amended claim, based partly on new documents he claimed to have discovered in Spain.

That, too, was rejected.

His next move was to file suit in the newly-created Court of Private Land Claims. The trial took place at the federal courthouse in Santa Fe in 1895. By then, Reavis’s money was all gone and he was forced to act as his own attorney. One by one, his forgeries were discredited by expert witnesses.

An investigator who had gone to Spain to inspect the archives at Seville testified that he learned that Reavis had been caught in the act of planting false documents there. Once again his spurious claim was denied.

By now the government was running out of patience. At the conclusion of the trial he was immediately arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit fraud. His conviction was almost a foregone conclusion. He was sentenced to two years, which he served at the state penitentiary in Santa Fe, and was fined $5000, which he never paid.

After his release, he tried to get back into the land-development business.

Failing at that, he tried his hand at journalism but again foundered. He died broke in Denver in 1914 and is buried in a pauper’s grave.

Sue Jimenez: Guinness World Record Holder Of Cookbooks

M

ost American kitchens contain shelves or countertops dedicated to holding cookbooks. But Albuquerque resident Sue Jimenez has entire rooms housing her Guinness World Record collection.

In 2013, when Jimenez won the world record, she had 2,970 cookbooks, twice as many as the previous record holder. To date, she has amassed an impressive 6,568.

Aptly dubbed “The Cookbook Queen” by an acquaintance, the retired forensic anthropologist and private investigator said she prefers reading cookbooks over fiction.

“It’s the history in the cookbooks that’s more interesting than the recipes themselves,” said Jimenez. “Of course, I go through and pick out the recipes I want to try, but there’s so much history in them - changing technology, changing attitudes, trends, what we eat, what people have access to eat. It’s really fascinating to me.”

Her collecting journey started on her 18th birthday, when Jimenez’s parents bought her the book series, Time Life Foods of the World.

“The first thing I wanted to cook was a 6-foot Viennese cherry strudel. It was a major enterprise,” she said. “And I remember standing in the kitchen with my dad helping me stretch out this paper-thin dough on our kitchen counter. After that, I was hooked.

“In my 30s, I started to find that there were so many other cuisines I’d never tasted - Oriental, French, German. I started collecting cookbooks somewhere in my late 40s, when the job I had ended,” Jimenez said.

She had been working for Physicians for Human Rights and the War Crimes Tribunal after the Bosnian war. When Jimenez returned home, she filled her time visiting thrift stores in search of books.

“I’ve always been interested in reading, and I found all of these wonderful cookbooks, like the Joy of Cooking, for $1.99. I knew lots of people were collecting cookbooks, so I thought maybe I could set up something online to sell them,” Jimenez said. “That was my first collection, of about 2,000. But instead of making money, I ended up losing it, so I donated about 1,500 copies to the Friends of the Library. After that I began working as a private investigator, and I started another

collection in 2001. I’ve been building it up steadily since then.”

One of her favorite places to buy cookbooks is resale store Savers, where she browses a couple of times a month. “They have the biggest selection of all the thrift stores. I like to go on Tuesdays, when I can use my senior discount. Less than 10 percent of the time have I ever paid full price for a cookbook.”

Jimenez says that while her mother was a good cook, she never tried a lot of adventurous cooking, sticking to staple seasonings such as salt, pepper, and parsley. But one of the meals her father created is among her all-time favorites.

“He would cook a wonderful beef stroganoff, using a recipe you can find in probably any cookbook, with a Caesar salad for 30 people,” she said.

Jimenez has become accustomed to experimenting with unfamiliar ingredients required by many of the recipes in her cookbooks and to using a wider variety of flavorings. For example, she has acquired 70 types of salts and 50 kinds of peppers. One cookbook from Kazakhstan contains butcher diagrams for meat from camels and horses.

Jimenez’s collection is impeccably well-ordered. When she and her husband moved to their home a few years ago, she had color-coded boxes of books and labeled shelf assignments for all of them. Today, she catalogs her 6,000-plus cookbook collection via Collectorz.com, a digital database that helps her to keep tabs on new ones and those that she’s lent out.

Among the masses, she does have a singular favorite - a little book called “Feed the Brute,” by Marjorie Swift, published in 1925.

“What’s interesting to me is what she writes about the family and about men in particular. I just love this quote here: Marjorie maintains ‘a wellfed man is a happy one, and a very easily managed one, too. And since we women know that to maintain harmony, every man - however clever, however efficient, however charming - must be managed. So, let us feed him well first and manage him afterwards.’ I just love the history here. Really, for 1925, this is a reverse-sexist cookbook!”

2019 National Senior Games UPDATE

I

n August 2015, a 65-foot lumber truck struck Joannie Griffin while she was cycling. For weeks she remained in excruciating pain, not realizing her back was broken due to a misdiagnosis.

“It was like childbirth that didn’t end,” said Griffin, now 60, describing her pain level after the accident.

“I thought I’d never get out of bed again and fell into a terrible state of depression.”

A lifelong ‘gym rat,’ Griffin says she was never a competitive athlete.

That changed in 2008, when she met her husband.

“We were cycling at the time - I was 48 - and we decided to do a triathlon,” she said. The competition combines biking, swimming and running.

“I actually bought a book called Triathlons for Dummies,” Griffin said. “It described a regimen of a combination of running, swimming and biking each week, with two days of rest.

So, I’d do something almost every day.”

Doctors finally diagnosed her broken

back three weeks after her accident. By then, her bones were already growing back, so the window of opportunity for corrective surgery, whereby a pole would be inserted into her spine, was gone. However, her team of doctors agreed that had Griffin not been in such good physical shape before the accident, she would likely have been paralyzed.

“It was a function of being fit,” Griffin said. “If my back wasn’t as strong as it was due to my exercising, it would not have been the same outcome.”

As Griffin lay in pain and depressed in the hospital, she received divine guidance from her father, who died three years prior.

“My dad was a Holocaust survivor.

He spent two years at a concentration camp in Bergin-Belsin, Germany,” Griffin said. Nazis imprisoned him in the WWII Nazi camp where Anne and Margot Frank were among the tens of thousands of Jews killed.

“He said, ‘Shut up and stop feeling sorry for yourself!’ Well actually, he used expletives,” she said. “But what that did was, it made me think about him and how much worse his life was. He saw death every day. He was basically telling me all I did was get hit by a truck. I said to myself, ‘This is not the way the story ends!’ My world shifted right at that moment.”

Griffin said she sought the advice of her best friend, a medical social worker, for motivation.

“She found professionals who would help me with my end goal: riding in the Iron Horse the following May,” Griffin said.

The Iron Horse, a competition in which cyclists “race the train” from Durango to Silverton, Colo., was a mere nine months away. While she had participated in the race before, she would be competing under a different set of circumstances post-accident.

Among her medical team were Dr. Andrew Patterson of University of New Mexico Hospital and physical therapist Xavier Marquez. “My first day of therapy, he had me bend my knee half an inch. That’s it - just a half inch.

I started crying and saying, ‘I’m never gonna get there.’

“He told me, ‘Don’t do that, we’re going to get you to the Iron horse in May,’ It was that goal that saved me.”

Griffin did compete and has also participated in the National Senior Games, which will be held in Albuquerque this June. She will be competing in those again as a triathlete for the 21st time. She says the fact that she was misdiagnosed after the accident and that the corrective surgery didn’t happen allowed for her to continue to cycle and participate competitively.

“Cycling is my passion,” said Griffin, who owns Sunny 505, an advertising agency. “Exercise helps keeps me sane.”

When representatives from the National Senior Games were here last year, Griffin helped them with

marketing. “They said I had to do another triathlon and reach my personal goal of 20,” which she did this past year when qualifying for the NSG. Griffin, who just returned from biking 150 miles at Moab, says the book Younger Next Year inspired her.

“It talks about 35 percent [of our health] is genetics. The other 65 percent you can control with diet and exercise, and I have totally embraced that philosophy. You can’t help the things you cannot control, but (exercise and healthy eating) is something you can definitely control.”

“It’s never too late to start,” Griffin said. “Sports are also wonderful social events. As we get older, we tend to get isolated, and the world gets smaller.

between how much uric acid the body produces and how much the kidneys are able to remove. When that balance is disrupted, concentrations of uric acid can rise and lead to the formation of uric acid crystals in certain joints.

What are the risk factors for gout?

There are several. Consuming certain foods and beverages, mentioned earlier, can increase the risk. People who are overweight or obese or have medical conditions such as diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and heart or kidney disease are more likely to develop gout. Some medications can increase the risk. A family history of gout also increases the chances of getting the disease.

Men are more likely to develop gout than women, and aging increases the risk.

It is estimated that about 3 percent of men age 50 and younger have experienced a gout attack; that increases to about 12 percent for men between the ages of 70 and 79.

How is gout diagnosed?

Gout is diagnosed with a combination of a detailed history and physical exam, especially of joints that are acutely inflamed, painful and swollen. If there is fluid in an affected joint, such as the big toe, your doctor may be able to remove some fluid from the joint and have it examined for the presence of microscopic crystals of uric acid, which confirms the diagnosis of gout.

What can I do to decrease my chances of getting gout?

Some steps include staying hydrated

by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. If you have already had a gout attack, avoiding or minimizing foods high in purines may help. Maintaining a healthy weight or losing weight if you are overweight may also decrease the risk.

Your doctor may be able to prescribe a medication to decrease the amount of uric acid that your body produces.

What is the treatment for acute gout attacks?

Treatment is directed towards reducing the pain and inflammation and decreasing the duration of the attack. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents such as ibuprofen or naproxen are commonly used. Other prescription medications can be used to treat an acute attack of gout or to decrease the chance of subsequent attacks.

Hopefully you will never have a gout attack. If you have, there are steps you can take to reduce your subsequent risk, and your doctor can help. Here’s to your health!

A

new study reveals that moisturized skin may reduce systemic inflammation that leads to conditions affecting memory as well as metabolic and cardiovascular health.

PRIME TIME

Your Skin Can Spring Back New Mexico’s arid climate, combined with dry heat from a winter indoors, exacerbates dehydrated skin to extremes.

There is little evidence to indicate that drinking water results in higher skin hydration (but still drink!). The best way to make a significant impact on skin health is to apply a physical barrier - a moisturizer.

A study published in March by the Journal of The European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology shares pilot research conducted at the University of California, San Francisco, that found the use of a lipid-based moisturizer may reduce

skin inflammation contributing to chronic illness. The study asked 33 adults ages 58 to 95 to apply a moisturizer (containing cholesterol, free fatty acids and ceramides) to the entire body two times per day for 30 days. The participants’ cytokine levels were tested before and after the 30-day moisturizer test. At conclusion, cytokine measures had diminished significantly.

Researchers noted that the moisturizer was able to potentially reduce inflammation levels to what might be expected from individuals in their 30s.

The same journal reported separately that skin diseases are the fourth leading cause of illness. However, many people don’t seek treatment for their conditions.

Those with chronic skin care conditions, such as eczema or psoriasis, know all too well the impact skin has on wellbeing, but perhaps they haven’t yet considered that their dermatology may be contributing to referred pain or other side effects of inflammation.

Medical providers understand the relationship between skin health and immunity, but emerging evidence is building a biological theory that illustrates potential ways in which inflammation can be a side effect of debilitated skin. When the permeable barrier of the skin weakens (often due to dryness), inflammatory proteins (cytokines) are released for protection.

Over time, cytokines accumulate and may enter the bloodstream systemically.

The skin canvases a great deal of

physiological territory, and large compromised areas may result in many cytokines. Inflammatory processes emerging from any cause can contribute to conditions such as diabetes (Type II), atherosclerosis, osteoporosis and Alzheimer’s disease, so it is valuable to treat and prevent any potential causative factor.

Moisturizing the skin involves massaging dermal layers, invigorating the soft tissue beneath the surface and circulating nutrients in the blood that strengthen the dermal layers and improve appearance. Rubbing with moisturizer releases dead skin cells, enhancing cellular turnover and prohibiting bacterial growth and attachment. Massage also moves oils and residual fluid from sweat glands through the pores to the surface. While lymph doesn’t release through the skin, massage of the system can be of benefit.

Moisturizing is not merely adding lipids, but it can also be a therapeutic release of fascia, muscles, joints and ligaments.

Don’t forget to concentrate on scar tissue to encourage softening and the release of inflammatory cytokines.

Perhaps these new findings will inspire extensive research to help provide more evidence regarding the role of moisturizer in health. For now, add a moisturizing session as a post-shower workout daily to benefit health and to look fabulous. Abundant blessings and happy spring.

CASA (City of Albuquerque Senior Affairs) Kitchen Looking for volunteers to support a state-of-the-art commercial kitchen that prepares food for seniors in the community. Hours are anytime between 4:00a.m. – 12p.m, Monday through Friday. Participate in preparation and distribution of food. Follow proper procedures in handling of food, portion control, sanitation, nutritional requirements and safety procedures. Some food handling experience is preferable; however volunteers will be trained for areas of help where are needed.

The Family room volunteers greet families, maintain visitor data, stock food, drinks, and help families with their needs. Volunteers are asked to work one, three hour shift per week.

Once you know their source, there are a number of good home remedy baits for controlling cockroaches.

• You can put equal amounts of baking soda and sugar out in flat containers, and they will take it and die.

• Another option is to catch roaches with tape. Place duct tape down, sticky side up, and the glue on the tape will attract them.

• Outside, you can place pie pans filled with beer, which roaches love, and the pests will enter and drown. No ID checks required!

Commercially available is Niban Bait, made from boric acid. This product might be a good option if you are in an area where roaches are very common. It can be purchased online. One local supplier is www. pestcontrolsupplies.com. When using Niban, put it under and behind appliances, around hot water heaters, inside lower cabinets, in the garage and in other places roaches will hide.

To prevent roaches, do not store paper bags anywhere in the kitchen.

Seal any holes or crevices around plumbing under sinks and behind toilets. Regularly vacuum and clean floors under kitchen appliances. Keep drains closed at night to prevent insects from coming up from the sewer system. Also, get your attic and crawlspace, if you have one, dusted with food-grade diatomaceous earth.

Types of cockroaches you may encounter include the following: American cockroaches The American cockroach feeds on a wide variety of plant and animal material and is commonly found in sewer systems. It will come up the drains at night and enter the living space of a home. It also likes homes that have crawl spaces under them.

The American cockroach is the largest of the home-infesting roaches in the country, reaching a little more than 1½ inches in length. It is dark brown with yellowish band around its thorax (section behind head).

Oriental cockroaches Oriental cockroaches, or “waterbugs,” are found throughout

the United States. They are about an inch long. The female is all black, and the male has two brown wing tips, but it cannot fly. These roaches are common in sewer systems and will come up the drains into the homes. They are also common in underground debris outside and love stacks of firewood.

German cockroaches The German cockroach is the most prolific of the roaches. It is small, dark brown with two distinct black stripes on its thorax. It will feed on almost anything. If left unchecked, the population can severely infest a home or business quickly. They are most commonly found in kitchens and bathrooms. When you are controlling German roaches, you should use German Roach Pheromone Traps as well as some of the baits mentioned previously. One good supplier of the traps iswww. pestcontrolsupplies.com.

Work, family, relationships, finances and even medical conditions can lead to anxiety. These triggers may cause excessive worry, creating a debilitating cycle. The “what -if syndrome” is difficult to treat because the perceived triggers can often be multiple and need to dissected from each other. Although a genetic component may play a role, situational components affect a worrier.

Individuals from broken homes have a 70 percent greater likelihood of developing an anxiety disorder.

Consistency in parenting and the expression of love with assurance of safety give a child’s developing psyche peace of mind that a secure environment surrounds them.

As we age, that same sense of longing for security can be seen in elders dependent on others for care. They may worry about angering a caregiver or becoming too much of a burden. This may lead to hypervigilance that causes sleep disturbances, rapid heart rates, breathing difficulties, and problems with bowel and behavioral control.

The worrier’s mantra becomes, “If I can imagine something bad is going to happen, I have to worry about it.”

But anxiety can be managed.

First, recognize the worries you have and list them. Review the list, and try to determine if the worry is in or out of your control. For example, if you don’t have any risk factors for tuberculosis, worrying about contracting it serves no purpose.

Once you have been able to identify that all coughs are not a sign of TB, accept the low likelihood of the disease for yourself. If you must take action to feel in control, wear a mask in crowded areas.

Live in the moment, and concentrate on the good that is in your life now. Distraction is a great tool to combat anxiety. Read, play or listen to music. Go for a short walk.

Therapy may also be an option.

Cognitive behavioral is a good place to start because talking about worries allows you to defuse the bomb that worry can become. Medications should be viewed as a last resort.

As evidenced by the large number of individuals seeking treatment for anxiety and sometimes the underlying conditions, you are not alone.

Stevie Wonder may have really said it best: “Todo está bien chévere”, which loosely translates as “Everything’s really great.” Don’t you worry ‘bout a thing.
