New Mexican Seniors Eager To Sign Up For 2018 New Mexico Senior Olympics State Summer Games

he deadline to sign up for the 40th Annual New Mexico Senior Olympics State Summer Games is May 31, 2018 but already eager athletes 50 + are registering to compete. To date, 110 New Mexico senior athletes are registered to compete in the games being held in Albuquerque July 18-22, 2018.

In addition, 11 seniors from outof-state have signed up so far to compete in the State Summer Games. Interest is running high in this year’s Summer Games because athletes must qualify in 2018 in order to compete in the 2019 National Senior Games presented by Humana. The National Senior Games will be held in Albuquerque June 14-25, 2019. This is the first time ever the National Senior Games will be held in Albuquerque. The National Senior Games were first held in 1987 and are staged every other year. Cities all over the country compete to host the National Senior Games.

According to the National Senior Games, approximately 10,500 50 + athletes are expected to attend the 2019 event, plus an additional 15,000 family members and friends.

During the 2017 National Senior Games, which were held in Birmingham, AL, the Games generated $36.1 million in direct economic impact to the region. “My team was excited when Albuquerque decided to submit a proposal to host the 2019 National Senior Games.

Once Albuquerque was awarded the contract to host the games in 2019, we agreed to move the state summer games there in 2017 and 2018 to help us

prepare for the big event,” said Cecilia Acosta, executive director of New Mexico Senior Olympics, which is based in Roswell. Last year, 235 active New Mexicans competed in the National Senior Games (126 women and 109 men.). New Mexico brought home 36 Gold medals, 36 Silver and 42 Bronze medals.

The State Summer Games is a 24-sport annual competition for men and women age 50 and over. It is the largest multisport competition in New Mexico for active seniors.

Athletes compete in 5-year age divisions. Sports include Air Gun, Archery, Badminton, Basketball Freethrow, Bowling, Cycling, Dance, 8-Ball Pool, Frisbee, Golf, Horseshoes, Huachas, Pickleball, Power Walk, Racewalk, Racquetball, Road Race, Shuffleboard, Soccer Kick, Softball Throw, Swimming, Table Tennis, Talent, Tennis, Track & Field and Triathlon. There is no prequalifying to register for the State Games.

Tax Preparation Versus Tax Planning: Do You Have a Tax-Efficient Retirement Income Plan?

I

t’s that time of year where taxes are top-of-mind for all Americans. While April 17 is an important deadline and many are familiar with the steps involved for tax preparation and filing, what steps are being taken to reduce your tax burden the other 364 days each year?

Many retirees are shocked to discover that the impact of income taxes on their retirement could be significant. While W2 wages may come to a stop, Social Security will likely be at least partially taxable and withdrawals taken from taxdeferred retirement accounts can quickly add up. Especially once reaching the age of 70.5, when required minimum distributions will continue to increase each year forcing you to take taxable income, possibly even pushing you into a new, higher tax bracket.

You have likely heard about the importance of diversification and asset allocation as investment fundamentals. In retirement, asset location and tax diversification can be equally significant factors. There are a number of different account types or “locations” ranging from taxable, tax-deferred and tax-free to choose from, along with investment vehicles with tax-advantaged benefits. By diversifying your investments into a variety of accounts based on tax-status, you can begin to control and mitigate when taxable events will occur to be in your favor based on current circumstances and tax laws.

Retirement planning is a distinct specialty that requires expertise to create a comprehensive strategy for where, how and when to take money from your savings for income. The bottom line, a retirement plan with no tax plan may be one of the most significant and irreversible mistakes you can make. After all, you may recoup losses with investments in the market. The same is not true for costly tax-planning mivstakes.

ay 5 & 6, 2018 the Village of Corrales will host one of the most anticipated art and studio tours in New Mexico. Village artists and craftspeople open their studio doors to the public for one weekend only. Many studios in the 20th Annual Corrales Art and Studio Tour will host multiple artists in 34 locations throughout the Village including several local galleries.

Glen Smith, Corrales artist and CSA Board Member said, “We invite the public to join us in our creative spaces, view and purchase art, and get a glimpse of our process.”

Happy Birthday ‘Burque

A

lbuquerque celebrates its birthday this month.

It was on April 23, 1706, that Don Francisco Cuervo y Valdés, acting Governor of New Mexico, composed a formal letter to the Spanish viceroy in Mexico City certifying the founding of a villa, or large town, “in the valley of the Río del Norte in a good place as regards land, water, pasture, and firewood.” He went on to say that he had named this new town in honor of the viceroy, Don Francisco Fernández de la Cueva Enríquez, eighth Duke of Alburquerque.

Cuervo had been appointed interim governor upon the death of Governor Don Diego de Vargas two years earlier, and it was his hope that he might be given the job permanently. He apparently believed that naming the new villa for the viceroy might improve his chances.

Acting on his own authority, earlier that year Cuervo had recruited a number of families to re-settle a section of the middle Rio Grande valley that had been abandoned since the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. He sent with them, for protection against raiding Apaches, a contingent of ten soldiers who also brought along their families. There they were to lay out a town in the manner prescribed by Spanish law, with

a church and government buildings facing a central plaza. In his April 23 letter to the viceroy, Cuervo certified that all this had been done. Other documents, however, cast some doubt on his claims.

Cuervo’s letter reached Mexico City in July, whereupon the viceroy appointed a committee to review it and make recommendations. They noted that although Cuervo should have consulted with the viceroy before acting, the Villa de Alburquerque was now a “done deal” and might as well be recognized as legitimate. But they cautioned Cuervo against establishing any more unauthorized towns.

Presumably, an official document, the Instumento de Fundición was then drawn up, granting land and water rights to the new villa. If so, it has never been located, although generations of scholars have combed Spanish and Mexican archives looking for it.

The lack of a document establishing those rights has figured in litigation over the years, as recently as the mid-20th century.

Questions about other irregularities in the founding of the town arose over the next few years, leading to an official inquiry in 1712. It found that the actual number of settlers fell short of the 30 families required for the designation of a villa. Cuervo had claimed there were 35 families, but it appeared there

were only 19, not counting the soldiers.

Moreover, the church was smaller than had been claimed, and the casas reales, or government offices, did not exist at all. A few houses were clustered around the plaza, but most of the residents lived on farms spread out along the valley for several miles.

Nevertheless, Cuervo is generally recognized as the founder of Albuquerque. An equestrian statue in Old Town, near the intersection of Romero Street and Mountain Road, honors him. The governorship, however, went to a rival, and Cuervo returned to Mexico City. A descendant, one José Cuervo, whose name may be more familiar to modern Americans, became the founder of Mexico’s tequila industry.

The disappearance of that other ‘r’ in Alburquerque has been the subject of much speculation. Early maps and documents reflect considerable variation in the spelling of many New Mexico place-names, so it’s not surprising that the other ‘r’ got dropped at some point.

One thing that is certain is that the modern spelling was firmly in place by the

second half of the 19th century. English speakers seem to find it easier to pronounce than “Alburquerque.”

It should be noted that there still exists, in the region of Extremadura in western Spain, a lovely hilltop town called Alburquerque, which I have visited. There is also still a Duke of Alburquerque, although he no longer lives there.

pring is certainly in the air, and with the days getting longer and warmer, many of us yearn to spend more time outdoors. But that’s difficult to do if your recipes keep you toiling in the kitchen for long periods at meal times.

While watching cooking shows - my Saturday morning ritual - I was inspired by The Pioneer Woman, Ree Drummond, to cook faster, less labor-intensive meals.

Time was not a problem as she whipped up scrumptious-looking dishes on the fly.

Her shortcuts don’t take away from serving up delicious entrees, either.

So, if you’re short on time or just want to spend more time outside, try making some yummy foods from her “16-Minute Comfort” episode, which includes Deconstructed Chicken Pot Pie, Snappy Stroganoff, Speedy Shrimp and Grits, and Classic Tuna Melts. Deconstructed Chicken Pot Pie Ingredients: • 2 tablespoons butter • 3 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into small cubes • 3 celery stalks, finely diced • 2 carrots, peeled and finely diced • 1 large onion, finely diced • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper • 2 sheets frozen puff pastry (from a 17.3-ounce package), thawed • 1 large egg, whisked with 1 teaspoon water • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour • 1/8 teaspoon turmeric • 3 cups low-sodium chicken stock, hot • 2 cups half-and-half • 2/3 cup frozen peas • 2 sprigs fresh thyme, leaves picked • 1 small sprig fresh rosemary, leaves chopped Directions: Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Line two baking sheets with parchment.

Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chicken, celery, carrots, onion, and some salt and pepper. Cook until the vegetables just begin to soften, about seven minutes.

Meanwhile, make the crusts. Unroll both sheets of pastry, even out the surface with a rolling pin and cut out three circles from each. Transfer the circles to the prepared baking sheets, poke them all over with a fork, and brush with the egg wash. Sprinkle with some salt and pepper. Bake until golden brown, about 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, sprinkle the flour over the chicken and vegetables and add the turmeric; cook for two minutes. Pour in the hot stock, add the half-and-half, peas, thyme, and rosemary, and cook until the sauce thickens, another three minutes. Serve in bowls topped with the crusts.

Another “fast and fantastic” recipe from this episode is Drummond’s Snappy Stroganoff. The only negative review was that it was “too soupy,” so those who tried it recommended adding flour or cornstarch or reducing the liquid.

Snappy Stroganoff Ingredients: • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper • 12 ounces egg noodles • 4 tablespoons butter • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley • 1 1/2 pounds sirloin, cut into 1-inch pieces • 1/2 teaspoon paprika • 8 ounces mushrooms, thinly sliced • 3/4 cup frozen pearl onions (or try diced shallots or onions) • 1/2 teaspoon fresh thyme • 2 cups low-sodium beef stock, hot • 1/4 cup dry white wine • 1/2 cup heavy cream • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard (one reviewer recommended less) • 1/2 cup sour cream Directions: Bring a pot of salted water to a boil. Add the noodles and cook according to the package directions. Drain and toss with 2 tablespoons of the butter and 1 tablespoon of the parsley. Keep warm.

Meanwhile, melt the remaining 2 tablespoons butter over medium-high heat in an extra-large skillet. Add the beef, season with the paprika and some salt and pepper, and cook until browned on all sides but still pink in the middle, two to three minutes.

Remove from the skillet and set aside.

Add the mushrooms, onions and thyme to the skillet, and season with salt and pepper. Cook until beginning to soften, two to three minutes. Add the hot stock and wine and cook for a minute until it reduces. Lower the heat and stir in the heavy cream and mustard. Add the beef back in, along with any juices on the plate. Cook for one minute so the beef is heated through. Turn off the heat and stir in the sour cream. Taste and adjust the seasoning.

Serve over the buttered noodles and garnish with the remaining parsley.

Ingredients: • 1 cup freshly brewed hot coffee • 1 tablespoon brown sugar • 1 jigger Irish whiskey (1 1/2 ounces or 3 tablespoons) • Heavy cream, slightly whipped Directions: Fill footed mug or a mug with hot water to preheat it, then empty. Pour piping hot coffee into warmed glass until it is about 3/4 full. Add the brown sugar and stir until completely dissolved. Blend in Irish whiskey. Top with a collar of the whipped heavy cream by pouring gently over the back of a spoon. Serve hot.

hat is pneumonia?

Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs that can be caused by viruses, bacteria or fungi. The infection in pneumonia is deeper in the lungs than the infection in bronchitis, which is an infection of the bronchial tubes, the airway system that moves air in and out of the lungs. Pneumonia can range from very mild with no symptoms (colloquially termed “walking pneumonia”) to serious and even life-threatening infections.

The most common cause of pneumonia is a bacterium known as Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus). Other bacteria that can cause pneumonia include Haemophilus, Staphylococcus, Mycoplasma and Legionella.

Viruses that can cause pneumonia include influenza, parainfluenza, respiratory syncytial virus and others.

What are the risk factors for pneumonia?

There are many factors that can increase the risk of getting pneumonia. Adults over the age of 65 have an increased risk of contracting pneumonia. Chronic diseases including asthma, diabetes and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD or emphysema) increase risk. Smoking, a prior splenectomy (an operation in which your spleen is removed), a weakened immune system or a recent hospitalization can also increase risk. Getting influenza can often lead to secondary pneumonia.

How common is pneumonia?

Unfortunately, pneumonia is very common worldwide and in the United States. In the U.S., about 1 million people are hospitalized due to pneumonia every year, and about 50,000 people in the U.S. die from pneumonia every year.

Pneumonia is the number one cause of hospitalization for children in the U.S. Combined, pneumonia and influenza are the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S. The American Lung Association reports that both the hospitalization rate and death rate for influenza and pneumonia

is the highest in people age 65 or older. In the U.S., 90 percent of deaths caused by influenza and pneumonia are in people 65 and older, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

What are the symptoms of pneumonia?

Common symptoms of pneumonia include cough, often with thick green or rust-colored sputum that is sometimes streaked with blood.

Fever, fatigue and shortness of breath can occur. Common colds and viruses can cause similar symptoms, but the symptoms of pneumonia are generally much more severe. Worrisome symptoms include chest pain, severe shortness of breath, weakness, delirium or confusion, rapid heartbeat and high fever. It is important to understand that sometimes the only signs of an infection in a senior citizen may be a decline in mental or functional status.

What can be done to decrease the risk of pneumonia?

Getting an annual influenza vaccination (unless your doctor has told you not to get this) can help decrease the risk of getting influenza

or secondary bacterial pneumonia.

Pneumococcal vaccinations are also recommended for adults age 65 and older. There are two types of pneumococcal vaccinations available, and the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention immunization guidelines recommend that adults 65 and older receive one dose of PCV12 and at least one dose of PPSV23.

Lastly, it is important to be up-to-date on all recommended vaccinations! Speak to your primary care provider to understand what is recommended in your particular circumstances. Here’s to your health!

orth Fourth Street has long been home to quaint shops, cool architecture, and kind people who celebrate art and history.

It’s Albuquerque the way it looks in brochures. But it’s not a marketing ploy; it’s a microcosm of the Duke City, full of diverse ideas, people, buildings and businesses. And this part of town is where an industry of old things is blossoming anew.

The Antique Mile, as a coalition of store owners has dubbed it, is a stretch of Fourth Street from Guadalupe Trail to Alameda that boasts 11 unique and diverse shops.

It has become a favorite of regulars whose hobby it is to wander (“go antiquing”) between the tried-andtrue stores where treasures often are found. At least four such shops have popped up in the last three years along Fourth, bringing a few fresh faces to the world of vintage goods.

The newer stores tend to have a more modern approach to antiquing.

Porch & Twig, for example, describes itself as “hip” and specializing “trendy, urban vintage” on its website. Shoppers will find vintage goods and antiques with upcycled and modern twists, such as on-trend paint and card catalogue

pulls for a storage cabinet.

But plenty of shops along Antique Mile are still gold mines for rare and mint gems – the kind of finds that one ordinarily associates with words like “antique.” Legacy Antiques is one such shop. It has been around for more than 15 years, and each room in this historic house is themed with wares in exceptional condition.

It features single, delicate English teacups and saucers, mid-century light fixtures, and an impressive collection of gorgeous turn-of-thecentury wedding photos.

Karina Graham, the Antique Mile Association’s president, said that she is thrilled to see more new shops in Los Ranchos and the North Valley. She believes the addition of more trendy places to eat in the area – including Steelbender Brewery, Fresh Bistro, and Farm & Table – has helped increase traffic, and the shops are able to fill the need. “We are seeing more and more young people coming down, which is nice. We have a lot of Millennials coming through,” she said. “It’s a nice Sunday drive and the village is pretty. People of all ages are wanting something you can’t just buy that’s mass-produced. Our customers start on one end (of the Antique Mile) and work their way through.”

But shops’ proximity to one another isn’t the Antique Mile’s only strength. In the world of retail, competition is a part of the game, but these shop owners have developed a sense of cooperation.

The owners of all 11 stores work together every year to draw in Balloon Fiesta visitors, and they refer shoppers to one another, Graham said. Big events for Albuquerque can mean big business for small businesses.

This blend of healthy competition and support has been helpful to her business, Graham said. Graham and business partner Heather Bradley launched Found on Fourth nearly three years ago after spending time hosting separate spaces in an antiques mall. Their store is among the newest along the Mile, and they plan for their shop to reflect their personalities, and not just what traditional shoppers might expect. Being a part of a business culture that welcomes diversity and

strength in numbers is encouraging and part of what drew them to open their business in Los Ranchos to begin with. They don’t have, for example, much in the way of Mexican folk art, but they know they can send customers to Plumed Serpent. That store, meanwhile, can send its customers to Found on Fourth for oddities such as wooden shoe molds, anatomy art, and upcycled piano parts.

“We’re good at getting the word out for each other. And there’s enough (shoppers) to serve all of us, and enough of us to serve all of them,” she said. “It makes it more exciting for shoppers to know that the Antique Mile is so diverse. We see a great future for Fourth.”

New Medicare Cards Starting this month (April 2018), Medicare will be removing Social Security numbers from their new Medicare cards, and begin mailing them out to everyone who gets Medicare benefits. The reason for this change is to help protect your identity and reduce medical and financial

fraud. The new cards will have a randomly generated 11-character Medicare Number. This will happen automatically. You don’t need to do anything or pay anyone to get your new card.

Medicare will mail your card, at no cost, to the address you have on file with the Social Security Administration. If you need to update your official mailing address, visit your online Social Security account at SSA.gov/myaccount, or call 800-772-1213. When you get your new card, your Medicare coverage and benefits will stay the same.

If you have a relative or friend who lives in another state and gets their card before you, don’t fret.

The cards will be mailed in waves, to various parts of the country over a 12-month period starting in April 2018, and ending next April 2019. Medicare beneficiaries in Alaska, California, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Hawaii, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Virginia and

West Virginia will be the first to receive the mailings, between April and June.

The last wave of states will be Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio and Tennessee, along with Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

When you get your new Medicare card, don’t throw your old one in the trash. Instead, put it through a shredder or cut it up with a pair of scissors and make sure the part showing your Social Security number is destroyed.

If you have a separate Medicare Advantage card, keep it because you’ll still need it for treatment.

If someone calls claiming to be from Medicare, asking for your Social Security number or bank information, that’s a scam. Hang up.

• Guard your card. When you get your new card, safeguard it like you would any other health insurance or credit card. While removing the Social Security number cuts down on many types of identity theft, you’ll still want to protect your new card because identity thieves could use it to get medical services.

here are several bugs that don’t get much attention and are not very well understood. First is the velvet ant. Velvet ants are not real ants. They are wingless female wasps that resemble large, hairy ants. There are several species so they come in different colors. One species is red and black. Another is yellow and black and there are others. The male velvet ants do have wings. Velvet ants are also known as cow killers, because they have a very painful sting that is said to be able to kill a cow. That may be a slight exaggeration. They are solitary wasps and do not live in colonies. They spend their time wandering around yards, digging in the soil and occasionally entering a garage or home by accident. They are not at all aggressive, but will sting to defend themselves and the sting is very painful as I said. Apparently they make a squeaking sound when stepped on. I stepped on one in my yard in Rio Rancho many years ago and I didn’t

hear the squeak, but the sting was so painful I was screaming pretty loud.

They have an unusual way of making a living. The adult females feed on nectar and drink water. They go into the holes made by cicada killer wasps and lay eggs in the cicada killer’s cocoon.

The eggs hatch and the larvae feed on the cicada killer larvae. Then the velvet ant larvae pupate and eventually emerge as an adult. Then the female adults will eventually mate with winged male velvet ants and start the process over.

Velvet ants do no damage at all, and as I said, are not aggressive. Pesticides are not necessary to control them.

It would be a good idea not to walk barefoot in your yard.

Another “bug” I will mention is the sun spider. The sun spider is not really a spider, but they are arachnids as are spiders. They are also called camel spiders and wind scorpions but they are not scorpions either. They are not venomous and not at all dangerous.

They are tan in color, have eight legs, a pair of long pedipalps and have large, muscular jaws. They can bite if picked up. Sun spiders are very fast and very good at catching prey to eat. They will eat cockroaches or any large insects, spiders, scorpions and occasionally

small lizards.

They occasionally enter homes under doors or through any void, but will not infest your home. The females dig burrows outside and deposit about a 100 eggs or so. They will not breed in your house. The best method of control is to sweep them into a jar or can and put them outside, where they can continue to help you control pests outside. Pesticides are not necessary to control sun spiders.

Spider mites are very common pests on a variety of plants. They suck the sap out of their host plants. These mites also spin protective webbing on the plants surfaces. Spruce spider mites (Oligonychus ununguis) are considered one of the most destructive species as it will attack a large number of conifer trees, including spruce, arborvitae, pine, hemlock, juniper and Douglas fir.

Several other pest species include the carmine spider mites, the Banks grass mites, the linden spider mites and the two-spotted spider mites. There are many others as well.

When you have to control spider mites in your garden, there are two formulas that will work. First, mx 4 tablespoons of buttermilk with a cup of all-purpose flour and a gallon of water.

This mixture will suffocate the mites.

Another formula that will work Crush 3 oz. of garlic cloves and mix with 1 oz. of mineral oil. Let this mixture stand overnight, then strain.

Mix 1 teaspoon of fish oil and one tablespoon of castile soap with a quart of water. Slowly combine the garlic mix with the fish oil mix. Then mix two tablespoons of this mixture with a pint of water in a sprayer. This is effective on mites If anyone has any pest questions, I will help you to the best of my ability.

Adelante’s Desert Harvest Food Rescue needs data entry volunteers Data Entry for Adelante’s Desert Harvest Food Rescue. We are looking for individuals that are comfortable working on a computer and have great attention to detail.

Desert Harvest was started in 2001 to address two needs -- to alleviate hunger in central New Mexico and to provide volunteer opportunities for people with disabilities. Desert Harvest fights hunger in an incredibly costeffective way, by making use of an existing but under-utilized food source: surplus food from restaurants, hotels, schools, and supermarkets that would otherwise be thrown away. At just 4 cents per meal, the program is considered one of the most efficient food recovery programs in the nation!

Volunteer must have a good driving record, patient, courteous, polite, and pleasant. Volunteers are needed any day of the week and weekends are optional. Mileage reimbursement if required.

Senior Transportation Ride Coordinator: Answer phones, confirm ride requests and match rider and driver. (Coordinate rides). Enter information into the data base, complete rider intakes over the phone and mail packets. Volunteer must have good phone etiquette, patient, and be familiar with data entry. You must take an Abuse Awareness training class.

The Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) Advisory Council Needs members to join its efforts in promoting awareness and educating the community about FGP and senior issues. Council members advocate on behalf of FGP volunteers, evaluate the Program’s effectiveness, and assist in the recognition of Foster Grandparents by raising funds and in-kind resources. Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) is looking for volunteers age 55 and older who are interested in making a difference in a child’s life. Foster Grandparent volunteers must be willing to serve an average of 20 hours per week and must be able to pass a background check, physical, and tuberculosis test.

Foster Grandparent volunteers serve one-on-one with children, working with them to build their social and emotional development as well as help improve their literacy skills. Volunteers receive mileage reimbursement, supplemental liability insurance, meals while on duty, pre-service and monthly trainings, and recognition throughout the year.

I thought of avocado as a side dish, until my daughter introduced me to avocado toast as a meal. Now I serve it for breakfast, lunch, hor devours, and dinner.

History Mesoamericans cultivated avocado beginning at least 5,000 years ago, but consumption dates back over 10,000 years ago. This prehistoric looking stone fruit once went by the name, “alligator pear.” We consume primarily Hass (sounds like pass) avocados in the United States. These are all descendants of a single tree planted in the 1930’s by Rudolph Hass the Johnny Appleseed of avocados. Hass was a postman

T

his flu season has shown us how easily respiratory infections can be transmitted.

We now see individuals wearing face masks at work and in places of congregation. We witness individuals sneezing into their sleeves. This is also accompanied by fist–bump greetings rather than traditional shaking of hands.

What do we know about this phenomenon called a sneeze?

The scientific term for a sneeze is sternutation. It is defined as convulsion of air from the lungs through the nose and mouth, usually caused by foreign particles irritating the nasal mucosa/nasal lining. External stimulants pass through the nasal hairs to reach the nasal lining and may trigger the release of histamines, which irritate the nerve cells in the nose. The brain then receives signals through the trigeminal nerve network to activate a sneeze response. Multiple muscles

of the face, throat and chest are involved in creating a sneeze. As a result of the contraction of theses muscles, the nasal and oral cavities open and a powerful release of air and bioparticles occurs.

As we watch flowers and trees return to life in April, sprouting all shades of green and gold, the wind also swirls. A byproduct of all that organic activity is allergies for us humans. The inhalation of allergens known as pollen cause our nasal passages to erupt, resulting in a runny nose, nasal congestion, watery eyes and a cough. But wait there’s more.

The medications used to combat these unwelcome symptoms can cause problems of their own. The most notable offending agent is the antihistamine. While it may help dry the drip from your nose, it can also cause havoc with your bladder and your bowels, dry your eyes and your throat, and even mess with your brain.

Congestive heart failure patients may try to drink a little more water to treat the resulting dry mouth but may not tolerate excess fluid. Dry eyes may exacerbate ocular conditions, including narrow angle glaucoma, and cause blurred vision.

Antihistamines may result in a condition referred to as urinary retention. Older men often have enlarged prostates with sluggish

urinary streams. Antihistamines decrease the bladder’s ability to contract and overcome the enlarged prostate’s effect on the urinary stream, leading to complete obstruction and/ or retention. This can lead to bladder distention and injury.

Another side–effect of that little allergy pill is constipation.

Antihistamines block the impulses our bowels require from our parasympathetic nervous system to propel stool through our colon properly. The result can be delayed transit time and may cause constipation or worse, bowel obstruction.

Acute confusion (delirium) can occur when antihistamine interacts negatively with other medications, including muscle relaxants, antianxiety medications, antidepressants and opiate pain relievers. This often results in emergency room visits and hospitalizations.

Decongestants can also affect seniors. This class of medications can be in oral or nasal preparations. They decrease blood flow to congested airways or nasal passages, resulting in less inflammation and less mucous production. Decongestants like pseudoephedrine can also interact with other substances such as caffeine-containing products, leading to excessive excitation, nervousness,

insomnia and even a rapid heart rate.

Upper respiratory tract infections can easily be spread by the production of aerosolized droplets through a sneeze. A sneeze can produce 40,000 droplets.

Sneezing into one’s hand is a no-no.

Germs left on the hand can be spread through handshaking or via handheld objects, including doorknobs.

To reduce the risk of spreading diseases (including the flu), one should hold the forearm or the inside of the elbow in front of one’s mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing.

Saying “God bless you” to someone after a sneeze has been attributed to Pope Gregory I. During his reign, the plague was rampant, with sneezing and coughing spreading disease. His prayer was aimed at protecting an individual from further illness.

Others offer, “Gesundheit” to the sneezer. Borrowed from German, it literally means “health.”

The morals of this story are that no medication, even over-thecounter medications, should be taken without your health care provider’s input. Sneeze into your inner elbow, and consider offering a blessing to anyone who sneezes. No matter what acknowledgement of a sternutation you use, remember that cold and allergy relief meds are nothing to sneeze about. Gesundheit.

Ophelia S. Rinaldi – March 26, 1933—October 18.2017 Ophelia Sandoval Rinaldi’s contributions to Sandoval County and the State of New Mexico will be high-lighted through her career at the Veterans Administration. She worked tirelessly providing services and advocating for seniors and veterans. She had a passion for advocating for the rights of Older Adults and Women. She was a founding member of the National Hispanic Council on Aging, and inducted into the AARP New Mexico Hall of Fame and New Mexico Aging and Long Term Services Department for her volunteer advocacy work on behalf of New Mexico seniors .

Presenters Michelle (Michi) Rinaldi & Justin Rinaldi will touch on the accomplishments of their mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Ophelia graduated from the University of NM and received a BS and Master’s in Social work from Denver University.
