Sotogrande brings a very productive season to a close The urbanisation is approaching the final days of the month of August and early September with enormously positive results for the private sector during the summer. The hotel, gastronomy, leisure and services sectors are all reporting very good figures for the season. With occupancy figures of 85% on average and 95% at key times during the season; the extensive range of restaurants and bars and an endless calendar of social, sports and cultural activities, make this a unique destination; something which is supported by very productive results for the local business community.

For many people, it’s time to pack the suitcases now. With the end of August, a favourite month on the calendar for the urbanisation and the people of Sotogrande, another summer season comes to an end and many will be returning to their homes for the rest of the year. Luckily, some others can enjoy this magnificent enclave 365 days a year. For that reason, let’s focus on this very select group and tell them about some of the things that will be happening from now to the end of the year. This marks the start of the new political and institutional year, and the time when businesses which do not only operate seasonally resume their activity again. Sport, however, never stops for a moment in Sotogrande. Nothing could be further from the truth than the claim that the last day of polo takes place in August, because not even
this sport ceases in this area. As I have said before, we will be enjoying more tournaments before the end of the year, and Ayala Polo Club will probably play a leading role in that. That is also what the Puerto Deportivo in Sotogrande will be doing, when it hosts a premier nautical event on 15 September: a yacht race with the participation of two exceptional neighbours. The competitors will cross the Strait to Ceuta after first passing through Algeciras; both of these towns have strong links to Sotogrande through competitions and races, and this new event will boost and revitalise the yachting sector of the urbanisation. It would be impossible not to realise that one of the most important events of the autumn is approaching. A new edition of the Andalucía Valderrama Golf Masters, which counts towards the European Tour, will be held from
15 to 21 October (the final day). This will be a week featuring golf at its very highest level, and the destination will breathe sport from every corner. Last year over 45,000 people filed through the entrance of the Real Club Valderrama and it is hoped , and everything indicates, that even more will do so this time. And, close to home, discreetly and without making too much noise about it, we are celebrating the 20th anniversary of El Periódico de Sotogrande. We are already working on preparing something suitable for our readers and advertisers to mark the occasion and, in its own way, it will be one more ingredient to flavour this autumn, when so much is going on. In the meantime, you have time to pack the cases and get the books ready for the youngest members of the family to return to school, in just a few days’ time.

Preserving our way of life Don’t worry, you haven’t picked up an old edition of the paper nor have we repeated the page from edition 329 (published back in May). Simply, between you and me, it is unfortunately a case of: “Protests against the anchorage 2.0”. The photographs you see when you open this paper (pages 6-7) portray to perfection the far-sighted social response to the simple hint that an anchorage for large commercial ships is likely to be created in the Mediterranean just off the Campo de Gibraltar coast. Specifically, between the beaches of La Línea, almost from where they start, to Cala Sardina, on the boundary of the province. What this means is that it would stretch from one side of the endless and enviable marine horizon which Sotogrande enjoys, to the other. I’m sure I don’t need to remind you, as we did before the summer, what this would mean or that it would be an attack on the very special way of life that we have achieved in this destination. The consequences would be fatal for the whole area and the list of “cons” is just too long, tiresome and repetitive to repeat. Think
about it for a moment, and you will find all the answers without me needing to recite them one by one. What is worthy of praise, though, which I would like to emphasise here and the aforementioned pictures show, is the solid, firm and unanimous social response to the possibility of an anchorage being built off the Sotogrande coast. Institutions and administrations, both public and private, with representatives of all political parties; residents’ associations, local businesses and ordinary citizens joined hands in that human chain, which completely reflected local determination. This strong alliance leaves the Bay of Algeciras Port Authority (APBA) with no argument for carrying out this project. Sincerely, with such firm, clear and rapid responses, I find it very difficult to believe that such a project could go ahead. I hope that is the case, anyway, and if not then it could only be the start of a battle on which a special mixed committee is already working, with the participation of businesses in the Guadiaro Valley and San Roque council.
Apart from this, which as a news item seems to me to be one of the most relevant at the end of the summer, I urge you not to feel depressed about the end of the season. Cheer up! A new one is beginning, the school year is starting, and there are many joys ahead in Sotogrande. Work will begin again on major projects which are due to be finished by summer 2019 (among them, we are looking forward to the second phase of The Beach at La Reserva Club), many of them in the property sector. And we are already beginning to catch glimpses from afar of the Andalucía Valderrama Masters (18-21 October); our impatience makes it hard to wait! So I repeat: Cheer up! It’s only the end of the summer, nothing more. There is still a great deal to come, including some September days which are a paradise for those of us who enjoy this location all year round. I wish to remind you that you can inform me of any issues of interest, either directly or through @JLGarciaSG.

Massive human chain in Torreguadiaro to protest about the anchorage The demonstration took place right on the beach and several hundred people took part
Torreguadiaro beach became the scene of a protest recently, when around 1,000 local residents formed a human chain which stretched along the coastline, nearly a kilometre and a half in length. Also taking part were politicians from all the political parties in San Roque and representatives of the environmental association Verdemar Ecologistas en Acción Campo de Gibral-
tar, which organised the protest. Many people who were already on the beach at Torreguadiaro decided to join in with the Verdemar protest, which also had the support of political groups at San Roque and La Línea town halls: both municipalities would be affected by the new anchorage proposed by the Bay of Algeciras Port Authority (APBA). It is believed that this anchorage
would cause serious environmental problems, because according to Verdemar the ships would keep their engines running and release all types of pollutants into the water of the area. Another serious consequence would be the huge influence on possibilities for tourism; those in the curve of the Bay have already been exhausted, and the same could occur in the area of
Sotogrande and the Costa del Sol, putting tourism, which is the main economic activity, at risk. In addition to contaminants from cargo ships, petrol and butane tankers, among others, is the problem of the introduction of non-native species, which would endanger the already fragile Mediterranean ecosystem. The protest was given consider-
able media coverage, and was a clear sign of the determination of people in the Campo de Gibraltar area, especially in San Roque, who flatly reject the idea of the anchorage. Now the ball is in the APBA’s court, as it has the last word on the subject, although the political authorities say there are alternatives to this anchorage and these should be studied by the port authority’s technicians.

‘El baile postrero’ by Antonio Garrigues, heartbreaking and entertaining Another success this year for the traditional ‘Sotogrande theatre’ show
One of the longest-established cultural traditions in Sotogrande is that every year Antonio Garrigues puts on a theatre performance. Last year it was a tribute to the Generation of 27; this year a heart-rending, complex and thought-provoking work called El baile postrero. Written and directed by Antonio Garrigues – who has produced about 50 works altogether – it is difficult to classify. It compares the final moments of life with a dance that we don’t know how to do. The cast was Carlos Rodríguez Braun, Gloria Marroquín, Tomás Gaytán de Ayala and Veva Alfaro Brujó; the performance was presented by Carmen Vázquez Pina and took place in the Boardroom at the Real Club de Golf in Sotogrande. As Garrigues pointed out in his final words, this dialogue between different voices, those of the unfortunate main character and the three others who made a valuable contribution to this guided reflection – including the character played by Tomás Gaytán de Ayala who «couldn’t say anything» and was only able to vocalise what he read,
verbatim – was not his own biography. But he does touch some key places, those where we have surely all been at some time, ruminating without finding any enlightenment. Each character gave their soliloquy from the proscenium – except the one who «couldn’t say anything,» who sat in a chair – and at times it was transformed into a type of dialogue with the public. It should be remembered that these actors are people who love the scenic arts, not professionals, but they developed their characters with confidence and nobody could find fault with their performance. The audience, which filled the room, broke into applause at the end and rushed to congratulate the actors. The performers will certainly have been neighbours and friends, because this theatre is an intimate space and has grown up among friends and people who know each other. This theatrical experience, which has been taking place for decades, not only brings theatre lovers together in Sotogrande: it has also, at the same time, become a top class cultural initiative.

The fundraising gala for the Multiple Sclerosis Association of the Campo de Gibraltar (ADEMCG) promised to be one of those unforgettable nights. The programme included live music with the unmistakeable voice of José Barberán, an equestrian ballet, good food and was, above all, a way of helping an association which really needs support. The night definitely lived up to, and exceeded, expectations. In the peaceful setting of La Reserva, which had been chosen as
the venue by Sotogrande Hípica Events, people from Sotogrande and elsewhere in the Campo de Gibraltar were able to contribute to the work of ADEM-CG by attending this very enjoyable evening. They loved José Barberán’s performance and his interpretation of some of the greatest voices of the 20th century including Nino Bravo, songs from films, such as Unchained Melody by Ghost, and well-known operatic works like Nessun Dorma, with which he brought his performan-
ce to a close. This highly versatile singer tackled some difficult compositions with great success, and the audience remained hushed and expectant throughout. The equestrian show by the Pizano Conde Riding School, led by Juan Antonio Pérez Conde, consisted of one dance with a single horse and another with two. This part of the gala evening also received loud applause and appreciation from all those present to support this worthy cause.

A natural oasis in the Mediterranean Landscaper Rocío Sáinz de Rozas and agronomist and businessman Ignacio Bethen (ACER) played a key role in creating the natural ambience of The Beach at La Reserva Club. We find out more about this impressive project, which includes over 100,000 plants of 250 different species The concept of a ‘beach club’ is usually associated with a particular style and a very specific definition, with palm trees, blue areas and located just a step away from the sea. What happens when all that has to be recreated at the heart of La Reserva Club, for The Beach? It means redefining the idea and creating a totally natural oasis, in Mediterranean style. The duo formed by landscaper Rocío Sáinz de Rozas and agronomist and businessman Ignacio Bethen, from ACER, played a key role in enabling the natural ambience of The Beach project in Sotogrande to become reality. “It took an incredible amount of work, months without stopping, to achieve the effect we wanted. It is a challenge we are immensely proud of. Collaborating with Rocío has been fantastic; she is a landscaper who knows how to work with her feet on the ground, and that makes everything simpler. She and my team have managed to do some-
thing which seemed impossible,” explains Ignacio Bethen, an agricultural engineer and the owner of ACER, the Málaga company which carried out the final stage of the project. “A good chemistry between the design and the execution is the key,” he adds. “We had a team of more than 40 people working flat out for five months so The Beach would be ready on its
opening day. The logistics and codifying system we have created for the irrigation are top level modern engineering,” says Bethen. For her part, Rocío brought the vision and concept of creativity and imagination to the inexhaustible natural countryside around The Beach. “I first started collaborating with Sotogrande a few years ago, and last summer we worked on expanding the area of the Tennis Club,” she says. “The Beach posed a very complicated challenge, because when you think about a ‘beach club’ the first thing that comes to mind is palm trees, and we had to integrate that concept into the Mediterranean landscape in this area. I believe we achieved that. You can see the result, you can see how from the centre, with very tropical features beside the blue areas, we have managed to create a context which gradually expands and blends with the Mediterranean landscape through a careful
process of transition from the heart to the exterior,” says Rocío. “The process was very intense, it took almost a year, and the final months were just crazy,” she jokes. “It’s difficult to say exactly how many plants there are, but there must be over 100,000. More than 10,000 stipas alone were planted at the side. But the most important thing in making this project possible was the work done by the multidisciplinary team on the creation, and Ignacio and his staff (ACER) in carrying it out. They coordinated perfectly,” she says. “”We have worked with more than 250 different species of plants, which came from different nurseries in Spain and elsewhere in Europe,” says Saínz de Rozas. “Plants which are very pleasing visually, like the ‘Nepeta racemosa’, ‘Walkers low’, ‘Strelitzia reginae’, ‘Berbena boniariensis’, ‘Agaves’, etc.; we combined those species with olive and palm trees, among others, for a
magical effect”. This landscaper explains that visitors see soft colours at the “calm and tranquil” entrance, and as they approach the swimming pools, they come across “more spots of colour, to focus their attention”. “We wanted calm and harmonic tones, colours that were not controversial or aggressive, to achieve a balance so that visitors feel encouraged to venture further and want to know more about the project and its strongest areas,” she says. “Everybody calls it the ‘beach’, although for me it was like an ‘oasis’. On land which is so arid, creating two such important areas of water gives you a wonderful feeling of freshness,” stresses Rocío. Both she and Ignacio Bethen are in total agreement about the successful result of their work, which can easily be appreciated just by visiting it, and they hope to continue working together on future projects in Sotogrande.

Empleo temporal y abusos
Temporary employment and abuses This summer we have seen the authorities intensify their usual persecution of business owners, claiming that they are abusing temporary employment. As always, what normally reigns in these matters is confusion, starting with their confusion about who is to blame. The talk of abuse of temporary jobs places the blame on business owners, as if they are taking advantage of the workers, and politicians, unions and bureaucrats need to intervene to stop such iniquitous exploitation. In reality, it is the politicians, trade unionists and bureaucrats who are responsible for the abuses, because there is no greater abuse than unemployment, and that occurs precisely because of the intervention which is legislated by the first, encouraged by the second and administered by the third. . In a labour market with less intervention there would be no unemployment, as proven by the Scandinavian countries, so applauded by the progressives, who blithely ignore the fact that the markets there are very flexible, particularly the labour market, with numerous facilities for hiring and firing staff. In our country, on the other hand, there are all types of supposed “protections” for workers which actually lead to unemployment, as those of us here in Andalucía know well. It was awareness of this that led Felipe González’s social-
ists to make it easier to create temporary jobs or part-time work, which have increased very considerably since then. And they always condemned the “abuses” when what they ought to have condemned was the Francoist employment legislation, which so many lefties yearn for, and which no politician in Spain has dared to dismantle. There are jobs which are temporary by nature, such as in agriculture or tourism. It would be absurd to say that in Sotogrande there would be the same work in the restaurant sector in August as in February. If temporary or
part-time contracts are abused it isn’t because business owners are intrinsically perverse, but because permanent employment is too expensive. There is no sense in complaining about the segmentation of the labour market without pointing out that successive governments have promoted and encouraged it. And there is even less sense in thinking that the same anti-liberal policies which have produced the intolerable unemployment which is suffered by workers in Spain are going to be the solution to the problem.

18 Informe

20 Informe
Sotogrande ends the month of August with record tourism figures • The urbanisation has been enjoying the height of the summer with an outstanding number of visitors and hotels practically full. • The average occupancy rate has generally been over 85% in August. • The sports events, shopping, leisure facilities and restaurants attract people to the resort. • Once again, people from elsewhere in Spain have proven the most traditional and loyal visitors at this time of year • The property market in the area, especially in terms of rentals, can describe this summer as a major success. Another August passes in the tourist destination of Sotogrande, and we are coming to the end of the most effervescent stretch of the summer season in the urbanisation. It has been a season which, according to data collated from different sectors including hotels, estate agencies, restaurants and leisure businesses, can be described as “very positive”, with record figures in many cases, especially in terms of occupancy and length of stay in the resort. Although July reflected the upward momentum of the past five years, and every summer the figures for the seventh month of the year come closer to those in the first weeks of August, (although in fact there was a slight drop last summer), they provide a new reason to venture that the tourism window has now begun to widen. In other words, these figures have come as a relief and an encouragement to those committed to encouraging year-round tourism, by extending the peak summer season beyond the 20 busiest days in the month of August. With beaches in a good state of maintenance and conservation and an improvement (according to opinions gathered by this newspaper) in facilities at a municipal and private level, it
seems only correct to describe this summer in the urbanisation as having been very productive. Occupancy and visitors With regard to the hotel sector, the figures are more than impressive and in several cases are higher than those registered in previous summers. In fact, during busy weekends and on key dates in the month, the average occupancy was around 90 per cent. This year, 2018, in the most
popular weeks of the summer, average occupancy on weekdays was generally above 84/85% and that is a very high figure. It means the sector has been able to maintain high occupancy rates for more days and for longer periods of time. At weekends, the August bank holiday and other key dates in the month, occupancy was over 95%, which is normal at the height of the summer season. One example is the Hotel Club
Marítimo Sotogrande, in Sotogrande leisure port, whose fantastic figures show that the occupancy rate was over 90 per cent throughout the whole month and it was completely full at the busiest times of the season. Fortunately this is nothing new, but it confirms the positive results and upward trend in the sector during the summer in recent years. Another factor worth noting in this type of establishment is cli-
ent loyalty (it is not uncommon for people to book year after year), and the fact that as usual most of the guests were Spanish (mainly from places like Madrid and the Basque Country). The Hotel Almenara, which has the greatest capacity in the urbanisation, is a similar case. During the height of the summer it achieved 80% average occupancy throughout August, which was two or three points higher than the same time last

year. The figures show an increase of between 5 and 10 points, as a minimum, at weekends and on key dates, and it has the added attractions of its Elysium Spa and 27-hole golf course. The celebration of almost a dozen tournaments and social competitions kept the hotel busy at weekends, with activities and events which differed from the everyday activity of the resort. There was also a noticeable presence of Spanish visitors as well as foreign ones because of the “golf phenomenon during these weeks. At the Hotel Sotogrande, in the Mar y Sol area, beside the Sotogrande equestrian centre, the figures were even better, with an average occupancy of 82% and peaks of up to 95% at the height of the summer. The remarkable figures this year were the best for several years. Again, most of the visitors were from other parts of Spain.
Other establishments in the area of influence of the urbanisation, such as Hotel Patricia, Hotel Las Camelias, Hotel Alcaidesa and Albayt Alcaidesa, among others, also showed very positive figures during the summer. In general the occupancy rate has been above 75/80% throughout practically the whole season although in general the length of stay was no longer than normal.
The property sector Summer is not one of the busiest times of year for property sales but in general it is a time when tourists who do not normally visit the area see and view properties and enclaves because they can visualise themselves there, or they start making plans to acquire a property in Sotogrande in the future. In this sense, this summer is proving quite busy for the different agencies who operate in the destination (there are more than 30) and the sector maintains the positive activity of recent years. However, there is also a sub-sector which stands out more than the rest in the summer: the prop-

erty rental sector, where demand often exceeds supply and people are prepared to pay more than 8,000 euros for a few weeks in a well-located apartment.
the season. Nearly all have been full throughout the summer (partly due to the number of organisations associated with the International Polo Tournament).
This rental market, one of the most productive in the past five years in the sector in Sotogrande, improves its figures each year, so it is looking very healthy and business continues to increase. The market ranges from impressive villas to classic studios for
Having taken stock of the information collated for this report, issued just before the new school year begins, all that remains to do is confirm that this summer season can be described as profitable and productive in almost every sector.

“Unos servicios inmejorables”

“People need to be more aware about keeping the beaches clean, but the facilities are good”
“I have known this area for many years and I think the beaches are better every year. There are plenty of facilities, as you would expect in Sotogrande of course. Everything is very clean, as well. Maybe the main change I see, compared with previous years, is that the beaches seem cleaner every year. I go to several different ones in the area, but mostly to Sotogrande, the one by the Paseo del Mar”.
“I think some of the beaches are very dirty, like Torreguadiaro for example. I suppose a machine cleans the sand every morning, but it is still really dirty. I don’t think the prob-lem is that they don’t clean, it’s that people make a lot of mess; it’s not a case of improv-ing the service as such, more of making people aware that they shouldn’t leave rubbish on the beaches. Also, the sea has been very dangerous because of the jellyfish, which have been terrible. In terms of services, everything is fine; there are good facilities on all the beaches”.

“More comfortable, but maybe some facilities could be improved”
“The Guadalquitón beach is a bit better than in other years and the one at Torreguadiaro is also quite good. The one with the catamarans still isn’t a beach, really. There seem to be fewer people this year, maybe because they haven’t all come at the same time, but the beaches are much more comfortable. We have suffered from the invasion of jellyfish, that has been horrible. The sand is clean, and the beach is accessible and usable. With regard to facilities, especially sunbeds and parasols, there could be a few more, but I think they’re fine as they are ”.

“The sand at Torreguadiaro could do with being cleaned up”
“I like most of the beaches in this area although some, like Torreguadiaro, are a bit dirty; it could do with being cleaned up a little. There are cigarette ends on the sand, and other rubbish that people leave. But the others I have been to, La Alcaidesa and Sotogrande, are very nice. ”.

Historias de aquí: Carmen, la cartera
1
Jaime López-Chicheri Dabán
www.jchicheri.wordpress.com
Hace unos días fui a correos. Yo no tenía prisa.
Stories from here: Carmen, the Postwoman A few days ago I went to the post office. Not the main one in Guadiaro, the small one in the Port which has just one member of staff, Carmen, and is only open for a couple of hours in the morning. As I went in I saw that the only client there was about to leave; so, I told myself, this won’t take long. However, as the postwoman and the client were about to say goodbye, I was weak enough to join in their conversation by making a comment. Once we were on our own Carmen, hardly giving me time to tell her what I wanted, seemed to sense that I am a bit of a chatterbox and, carrying on from her conversation with the last client, started to tell me a story about her son. I nodded and sometimes, out of politeness, made the occasional comment. She interpreted this as interest in her story, and that encouraged her to carry on chatting. And so she continued to tell me about the rest of the family. I wasn’t in a hurry. Because of that, I didn’t mind spending 20 minutes on something which should have only taken one. And I’m sure she liked that. Yesterday I went back to the post office to send a small package to one of my sons. As she now considered me easy prey, she talked to me while I was putting the items in the parcel and writing the address on it, which was a bit difficult. When she weighed the package and put the stamp on it, she realised I had forgotten something. - Oh look, you’ve forgotten to put the name of the recipient
on it. It might not get there. And, taking advantage of the situation, she then told me about something that happened to her once, some time ago, when she used to deliver the post.
- This is such a nice story. Once, a while ago now, one of the letters in my bag was only addressed to: “Katy, tall and slim. Outskirts of the village. San Enrique. Cádiz.” And she went on: “I walked around looking for Katy that day and several days afterwards; nobody knew who she was and the “outskirts” of the village could mean before the village or after it; it could be towards the mountains or towards the valley, who knows? I carried the letter with me every day, and once I had delivered the rest of the mail, I would spend a bit of time looking for this Katy”. “In the end, -she told me, proudly- I found Katy. I learned later they had met on an excursion and got on well, but when they said goodbye he only knew that she was pretty, the name of the village she lived in and that her house was in an isolated area. And he really wanted to see her again”. “And guess what, -she said, looking intently at me, her eyes shining with happiness- they’re a couple now. Have been for years. And you could say it was all thanks to me, I played Cupid”. When I left, I said to her: “Thank you very much. I always leave here with a new story”. It is my belief that this little office is always empty because people are in a hurry; they don’t want to lose time or they don’t know how to distinguish between losing time and filling it with stories. So they prefer to wait in the queue in the main post office in Guadiaro, rather than be alone with Carmen, the Postwoman.

Today, your problem has Mediation Mediation after the holidays: Ruth and Alejandro had just come back from their holidays when they decided to request a mediation. The arguments, bad-tempered faces and a feeling of disappointment and failure had turned the rest they had been looking forward to into nothing more than a waste of time and money. Mediation helped them transform that disastrous experience into the gift that it had genuinely represented for them. Identifying a crisis on holiday is much better than doing it during a routine or complicated stage of life. Don’t think “if we can’t even get along on holiday then nothing can be done”, because it is exactly the opposite: you still have time to resolve it. There is no sense in continuing in the same way, or breaking up without having requested help first. In this case, part of what was blocking Ruth and Alejandro was that they were living in the past. They wanted to feel the same things they remembered: this is impossible and loaded with limiting beliefs. They identified these and reconstructed the context of the conflict. A relationship is dynamic, it will never be the same as it used to be but it can be redirected to something increasingly better. Understanding how this was affecting them helped them to commit to solutions which they proposed to try until Christmas. They made the decision for themselves, in an atmosphere of trust and creative openness, facilitated by the mediation process.

A lorry leaves the road and crashes on the A-7 at Sotogrande
There was another traffic accident in Sotogrande recently, at kilometre 133 on the A-7 in the Cádiz direction, when a lorry left the road and crashed into a field beside the Guadiaro river. The incident occurred early in the morning of Friday 24 August; luckily nobody was injured, including the driver who was able to leave the vehicle unassisted, and no other vehicles were involved. The Guardia Civil quickly got traffic flowing freely again, while waiting for the tow-truck and emergency services to remove the lorry. The highway and crash barriers will be repaired by the State Roads Network as soon as possible. This has been described as “another accident” at Sotogrande because hours earlier, at the same point on the A-7 but in the Málaga direction, there was another incident involving a lorry and at least three vehicles, causing long tailbacks for more than an hour. One person who had been travelling in one of the vehicles needed medical treatment from the emergency services.

The council team visits Pueblo Nuevo to inspect the works being carried out there to eliminate physical barriers to mobility. This is part of a plan to improve accessibility all over the municipality, which consists of more than 70 different actions of this type. The works currently being carried out in Pueblo Nuevo are part of a plan which involves about 70 actions in different parts of the municipality, namely the nine districts and the town of San Roque itself. The investment was initially estimated to be about 100,000 euros, and the project was eventually contracted for just over 80,000; under the plan, more
than 70 physical barriers to mobility which exist at present will be eradicated. “At least seven or eight different actions to improve access, mainly to raised pedestrian crossings and pavements, will be carried out in every one of the districts. The aim is to facilitate the right to equality which we should all enjoy, independently of any conditions we may have,” stressed the mayor of San Roque, Juan Carlos Ruiz Boix. The mayor said this is just intended to be the first phase of an overall plan to make San Roque even more accessible, and other phases will be carried out under future budgets.

New initiative for Catholics in Sotogrande At the request of the Bishop of Cádiz, Don Rafael Zornoza, an English vicariate is to be assigned to the Campo de Gibraltar area, based in Santa Margarita and Pueblo Nuevo de Guadiaro. The Reverend Stephen Cochrane and Deacon Bernard Farrell-Roberts, who until now have been carrying out similar work in the Archdiocese of Tarragona, have been invited to start in September. This means that Catholics in Sotogrande will be able to attend masses in English in Pueblo Nuevo on Saturdays at 20:00h (19:00h in winter) and 10:30h on Sundays, from 15 September onwards. The priest and the deacon both have extensive educational training, having worked as teachers and heads of studies at the Mary Vale Institute in Birmingham, an institution of higher catechetical and theological training which is part of the city’s Catholic Archdiocese. Father Stephen was also chaplain at the University of Keele in England, and it is hoped that he will be able to extend the classes in science, faith, culture and moral living. In this way, he will consolidate the steps taken four years ago by Father François Sainte-Marie, who left us to go and work in Louisiana, USA, in 2017. Father Stephen, before beginning his life as a priest, was a cellular biologist; after that he was a parish priest in Stranraer (Scotland), Staffordshire (England) and Catalonia. Deacon Bernard is married to Janie, a surgical nurse, and they have six adopted children, three of whom live in England. Bernard is a teacher of science and faith and also gives training in theology and morality. He is also a doctor of bioethics, among other academic qualifications.

Fundamentals Nursery Created by Sotogrande International School, our philosophy at Fundamentals Nursery is to enable children to grow and develop in a healthy, happy and stimulating learning environment. We create exciting, fun, educational activities and family workshops so our little ones can play, learn, explore the great outdoors and develop a strong sense of self. All of which lays the best foundation for future learning.
When your child starts the learning journey with us we will work with you to make the transition a smooth and happy time. Creating strong bonds and a setting that feels like home. Education and development are important, but we know that nothing matters more than the safety, security and the health of your child. Inspired by the Reggio Emilia philosophy of early childhood
education, Fundamentals embraces this concept as it fosters independence, self-help skills and creativity. Teachers place great emphasis on using materials and activities that provoke investigation and group learning. Parents are also encouraged to be actively involved in all aspects of the Nursery and their children’s learning process. For more information please contact info@fundamentals.es / 618 97 68 09

with Montessori (>6 years), Emotional intelligence for adolescents and the School for fathers and mothers; these help to conform a unique educational programme. With normal hours being 7:30 to 18:00h
(which is when the workshops begin), Nanitos Montessori School is the best choice in Sotogrande. Further information from: (+34) 653 04 17 39 and email: info@nanitosmontessori.com
Nanitos: learning through experience A new term is starting at this Montessori school, which is situated in Sotomarket and now has more than two decades of experience in teaching children aged from 0 to 6 Nanitos Montessori School has now been accompanying parents and children in their development for over 20 years, with an innovative form of education. At Nanitos, the staff are convinced that a different way of educating children is possible and that is why they use the Montessori methodology, bilingual teaching, emotional intelligence, positive discipline and children’s yoga as pillars of their education system. Parents with children aged between 0 to 6 who are interested
in this teaching method can find this school in the Sotomarket commercial centre. Of course, languages are an essential part of the school’s educational project. English and Spanish are the main languages at Nanitos, where they also try to integrate French, convinced of the importance of this knowledge in the children’s future. Sport, music and art complete a full and balanced learning programme during the first stage of a child’s education.
With regard to languages, the school uses the ‘Kids&Us’ immersion method of English; this is a natural learning model which takes advantage of the innate ability which all children have to learn languages at an early age, especially between 0 and 7. Another highlight is the extra-curricular workshops on offer: Montessori Playground (0-3 years), Learning with Montessori (3-6 years), Discovering maths and language

The Minerva programme and entrepreneurship in Andalucía Minerva is an entrepreneurship programme created by the Junta de Andalucía, to develop new business projects in the technology sector in this region of Spain. The main objective of the programme is to support entrepreneurs and help their projects grow into stable businesses. So far, applications have been invited on an annual basis, and up to 30 projects are selected each time. The successful applicants then take part in a complete entrepreneurship programme which aims to speed up the development of their business idea. In the past five years over 1,000 applications have been received
and the selection period for this year has just ended; those who were successful can begin to accelerate their projects in September. This joint public-private initiative has already supported 74 projects, with a success rate of 80 per cent, and has helped to generate or maintain over 300 jobs. Andalucía is now the top region of Spain for potential entrepreneurs and the fifth in terms of knowledge and skills for starting a business. Marketing, services to companies and culture and leisure are the most popular sectors for new businesses, judging from the applications received so far. Half of them have come from rural ar-
eas and small or medium-sized municipalities; this means that almost half the applications originate outside the provincial capital cities, which highlights the dynamism and capacity for initiative in these locations. Several of the Minerva projects are linked with the cultural and leisure sector, and make use of social media or mobile applications. Some aim to put professionals from certain sectors of specialist activity in touch with one another, while others use virtual and augmented reality to bring people closer to their historical heritage. With regard to health and personal wellbeing, some of the most in-
teresting projects include software for medical centres which enable micro-organisms to be rapidly identified, reducing anxiety in dental patients and an innovative system for correcting and improving the way young children walk. In terms of the profile of the entrepreneurs, unfortunately only two out of every ten people with new business projects are women. However, female participation has been increasing in recent years, although at a slower rate than would be preferred. With regard to age, nearly 75 per cent of participants are between 25 and 46, and 15 per cent are under the age of 25.
Nowadays there are many resources and programmes which try to support the launch of new ideas and turn them into successful businesses, but it isn’t always easy to access them, because on most occasions the information about this type of programme is limited or poor. At Contasult we can help you to explore all the opportunities from which you can benefit for the launch of your business idea.

Ofrece un sinfín de propuestas adaptadas a los paladares más exigentes y a todos los gustos. and flavours from all over the world, and in addition to these ingredients there is the pleasure and luxury of enjoying good food, with an exceptional wine list
and the view of La Marina de Sotogrande in the background. Concentrating on the most natural taste: this is the essence of Foodisiac.
Foodisiac: the most natural taste of Sotogrande The new benchmark for gastronomy in La Marina de Sotogrande offers a wide choice based on the most natural products and artisan preparation The most natural flavour is a gastronomic concept which every restaurant seeks to achieve, although few find it easy to do so. In the heart of Marina de Sotogrande, in the urbanisation’s most popular gastronomic area, Foodisiac offers an exceptional choice of cuisine. Its inspiration comes from offering the finest quality and most natural products, carefully prepared by an excellent team of specialist professionals. It would be impossible not to no-
tice the extensive variety of food available at different times of day, a consequence of having opening hours which are convenient and relaxed for clients (it opens from 09:00h to midnight every day). Of course, the first choice of the day is a delicious breakfast, including a wide range of coffees with designations of origin from all over the world. The bread and artisan cakes and pastries, baked in-house by a French chef, are outstanding. This is something exclusive, and
difficult to find in this area. The delicious menu with top quality products means you can enjoy a perfect brunch, light lunch or relaxed dinner with views over the marina. There is a wide choice, adapted to please the most demanding palates and all tastes, ranging from fresh meats and fish to menus for those who love international cuisine, and vegetarians and vegans. The menu is balanced and, of course, healthy. Foodisiac concentrates on aromas

Sobre los testamentos europeos

www.costaluzlawyers.es
On European wills in Spain will need to have a Spanish will if they decide to choose their country as the country that will govern their inheritance affairs after they die. You can also opt to have a Spanish title of will with regards to your assets in Spain. This does not mean that Spain will govern your inheritance – this is simply a tool to make probate easier.
On August 17 2015, a European Regulation on inheritance law came into force. This regulation allows European citizens to choose for their inheritance to be regulated by either country of residence or country of nationality. Therefore if you are currently a Spanish resident but you have a different nationality that will provide you with better conditions for your heirs, you can choose this by simply stating it in your will.
Testators can either specify properties or assets to be destined to specific individuals, or simply make general statement on who their heirs are. Under Spanish law it is also possible to designate one or more people to deal with the inheritance as executors. You can also appoint guardians if there are minor children. It should also be noted that the will is always revocable which means you can change it at any time.

Marisol Martin presents ALONE, an exhibition of photographs which take an in-depth look at India The Hotel Club Marítimo Sotogrande adorned its walls with photographs which were taken by Marisol Martin during her trip to India. Marisol is an enthusiastic traveller and has journeyed over more than half the world. However, although she had visited a large part of Asia, somehow India had always been left behind. There was a reason: she was saving it for a special journey, for a special moment.
It was from her interest in discovering India, once that vital moment she had been waiting for arrived, that ALONE came into being: a very personal project in which she ventures into the heart of Indian culture, especially in the north of the country. “I felt intuitively that the trip to India was going to be special, not just another journey. It was going to be a project in which I could express myself through photography and help, by con-
tributing my grain of sand,” said Martin. This trip, which she did in 2017, has led to another type of journey and one which has not yet reached its culmination. It is the journey between the place the photographs were taken and the Hotel Club Marítimo Sotogrande, where her photos are on display and for sale. And it hasn’t finished yet, because she intends to use the money raised to help educational
projects in India. It means there is still work to be done in connection with ALONE. The photographer said everything had started as “an individual project, an experience in life, which has gradually become bigger”. The name of the exhibition refers to the individual aspect of the journey, which she did completely alone, and also to the fact that most of the photos are of people on their own. It is not, in any way,
a reference to empty solitude, but rather a time she dedicated to herself, in order “to enter fully” into the very complex culture of India. The inauguration was a success in terms of visitors and organisation. The photos, which are of extraordinary quality, were viewed by dozens of people, who also had the opportunity of hearing Marisol Martin explain the images to them as they enjoyed a cocktail.

Aguirre and McGuire, contemporary art in Sotogrande The exhibition was held at the Hotel Club Marítimo Sotogrande The magnificent central courtyard of the Hotel Club Marítimo in Sotogrande and one of its adjoining rooms recently housed an exhibition of contemporary art by well-known artists Violeta McGuire and Jaelius Aguirre, who are regulars among the summer exhibitions in Sotogrande. Thanks to the works of McGuire and Aguirre, whose styles are very different but equally as striking, the Hotel Club Ma-
rítimo became an improvised art gallery until 20 August, when the exhibition closed. Violeta McGuire’s delightful works included suspended coloured spheres and some impressive structures with plays on light and colour to replicate the marine ambience, while Aguirre dazzled once again with his prints and spectacular sculptures which recreated the geography of different parts of the world in negative
(showing the sea and leaving the land blank). It was all wonderful; and of course Sotogrande also featured among these landscapes, shown in the eyes of a dolphin in one fantastic picture. Anyone who missed this exhibition by Jaelius Aguirre and Violeta McGuire on this occasion should make a note to try to see the next one; it will undoubtedly be well worth a visit.

The library in Guadiaro was packed with people for the presentation of a work based on the beliefs and memories of José Ortega, a renowned
communist and republican who comes from Guadiaro but who emigrated for political reasons. Ortega believes there is no authentic democracy in Spain, and he explained that the book is something he wanted to create to demonstrate the importance of Historical Memory. At the same time, it includes the author’s own political ideas and some of his personal experiences, such as his beginnings in clandestine politics and the time he spent in Switzerland.

The work of Rita Martorell, on display in Sotogrande thanks to the polo The Santa María Polo Club in Sotogrande has reserved a space for art during the 47th International Tournament: artist Rita Martorell is exhibiting some of her portraits of “charismatic personalities” there. Adolfo Aldana, a former Real Madrid footballer, and former Foreign Minister Marcelino Oreja accompanied the painter and sculptress at the presentation. The room contains reproductions of some of these pictures which reflect the artist’s individual style, and they are the result of conversations and face-to-face meetings with her subjects. “Transmitting charisma through painting” is the challenge Rita Martorell sets herself in each of her works. Her brushes have portrayed public figures such as Francisco de Borbón Escasany, Gerardo Fernández Albor, Marta Ferrusola, Baltasar Garzón, Fernando Morán and Abel Matutes, among others. A
painting of Cameroonian footballer Samuel Eto’o, which he auctioned for his foundation after saying it was like auctioning himself converted into a work of art, caught the eye of the ex- footballer from San Roque and Spanish team member, Adolfo Aldana. “It was he who urged me to showcase this fusion of art and sport and bring it to Santa María Polo Club, to show to people who come to enjoy the polo,” says the painter, who stresses that “all these personalities posed live for me”. In December Rita Martorell will be inaugurating a new exhibition of portraits at the National Museum of Contemporary Art of Romania, for which she managed to persuade political figures from that country, including former prime minister Petre Roman, to pose for her to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the reunification of Romania.

Ayala dominates in the Medium HCP Silver Cup and is now hoping for the Gold Excitement and competitiveness are guaranteed in Medium and Low HCP during the final stages of the 4th International Tournament at Santa María Polo Club. On one side, in the Medium HCP, the semi-finals of the Gold Cup take place on Wednesday 29 August (Ayala and MB Polo already have a place) and the grand final will be on Saturday 1 September, from 18:30h. It is worth noting that Ayala, Íñigo Zobel’s team, triumphed in the Silver Cup, after already winning a trophy at the start of the summer, namely the Bronze Cup. The quartet of Zobel, Tomá Iriarte, Lucas James and Santi Gómez Romero continue on their unstoppable path towards the three trophies after their victory in the final of the Silver against Sainte Mesme (16-10). In the Low HCP, the semi-finals are being played this Thursday (30 August) from 11.00h in the Puente de Hierro area. It is certain that La Esperanza (Fernando de la Infiesta, Daniel Gariador, Hernán Pieres and Pascual Álvarez) will be doing their best to repeat their triumph in the final of the Silver.

“La Indiana is playing very well, it will be difficult to win this time” It was a very difficult semi-final against Dubai, a very competitive team throughout the season, but you achieved your aim of reaching the final in the Gold, didn’t you? The final? More like the whole match [laughs]. The truth is that Dubai Polo Team is a great team, it looked as if they were bound to win but luckily they didn’t close the game and we were able to turn it round and win it ourselves [it was decided by one goal]. Dubai fought right up to the last moment… Yes, they are very even and balanced and do well in every part of the game, they always fight. As I said, for me they are a really great team in every way. Even in this semi-final their level was slightly higher than ours but luckily we were able to go through to the final. You looked ecstatic in the final of the Silver Cup, and with the MVP prize. Are you feeling as positive about the Gold Cup final? La Indiana is playing very well and the final is going to be very hard; they have a lot of chances of winning but we have to get out there and play and see how the match develops. We have just won the Silver Cup, and we know what it is like to beat them.
Santiago Laborde
Hopefully we can do it again. La Indiana paid dearly for the mistakes it made in the previous match and it looks as if it is being reinforced for this final… They have corrected the team and it is going to be very hard. With Facundo [Pieres] on the field it is always going to be more difficult and hard-fought. We are going to compete and try to enjoy it at the same time. It is a fantastic day for polo here in Sotogrande and of course we are going to fight so that Lechuza Caracas wins. And after Sotogrande? It’ll be time to go home and start the Argentinian season, which we are also very excited about as usual. Thank you very much. Thank you, and a hug for everyone at El Periódico de Sotogrande
“The team is more competitive now but we need to play a very concentrated game if we want to win” Congratulations, you’re through to the final again. Now the fight begins… Yes, thanks very much. The Gold Cup also became very complicated, with some teams playing at a very strong level, but luckily we were able to get through to the final and we’ll try not to make the same mistakes so we can win. That is a great objective to end the season in Sotogrande. You reorganised the team and worked on strategy; we’re seeing a stronger La Indiana in this second part of the season, aren’t we? Exactly. We made a change in the middle, it went well and fitted in with the team. Now, as well, with ‘Facu’ (Facundo Pieres, ten Handicap goals) back in the squad, the team is much more competitive again and better placed for the Final of the Gold Cup. Wouldn’t it be fantastic to repeat last year’s triumph in the Gold Cup together with Facu Pieres? That’s what we hope, but the final is very difficult. Lechuza Caracas has had an impeccable season in Sotogrande and we are going to have to play a very concentrated game during the final if we want the chance to lift the Cup again (they both did so last year with the Ayala team). And take revenge for the Final in the Silver… Obviously [smiles]. We’ll try not to make mistakes because we paid very dearly for them in the previous final and we are fighting to win now.

The Golden Age Tour comes to Sotogrande and is a resounding success Sotogrande has just hosted the Golden Age Tour for the first time, a polo trophy following All Pro Polo League rules but which brings together professional and amateur players and patrons over the age of 40, in an experience which aims to recover the traditional values of this sport. The subsidiary final and the final of this special event took place on Field 1 at the Santa María Polo Club, which is where the 47th International Polo Tournament Gold Cup was also being held. The four teams who took part were Ayala Hotel Monasterio and Ballantines Bayswater in the subsidiary final, which Ballantines won 4-3; and Sta. Quiteria and John Smith, with John Smith achieving victory after a 4-4 draw, which was resolved by the goal difference over the tournament as a whole. Javier Tanoira is one of the people behind the All Pro Polo League and, by extension, this Golden Age Tour. Afterwards, he said it had been difficult to prepare. «It is a polo trophy with amateur players, patrons and professionals, all over 40. We managed to put four teams together, with players who hadn’t worn their white trousers for some time, and that is a great feeling. We hope to repeat it next year». Polo fans and the international media who were in the area to cover the International Polo Tournament took the opportunity to watch this unusual event, attracted by an initiative which, as Tanoira said, will hopefully be repeated in future seasons.

Sotogrande, Algeciras and Ceuta, united by a passion for sailing The nautical clubs of the three coastal resorts are preparing for the first El Estrecho A3 Race The Real Club Marítimo de Sotogrande, Club de Vela Vendaval de Ceuta and Real Club Náutico de Algeciras are currently preparing for a new high-level competition in the Strait of Gibraltar, the I Regata El Estrecho A3. This is a 30 nautical mile coastal race exclusively for boats with three single crew, and it will take place on 15 September in the waters of Sotogrande, Algeciras and Ceuta. Three organising clubs, three crew members per yacht and three departure ports in the first three editions: all with the aim of promoting the clubs involved and facilitating the participation of yachts from elsewhere. In this first year the race will begin in Sotogrande, but in 2019 and 2020 it will set off from RCN Algeciras
and Club Vendaval in Ceuta respectively. The I Regata El Estrecho A 3 begins in Sotogrande on 15 September, and the participating yachts will set off for a beacon at the entrance to the Bay of Algeciras, south of Punta Carnero. From there they will head for the northern bay of the port in Ceuta, the town which will welcome the first winners of a competition which was born with the idea of continuing in the future. In 2019 the race is scheduled to start in the bay of Algeciras, with the Real Club Náutico de Algeciras as the departure point, and after navigating the Strait of Gibraltar via a beacon in the waters of Ceuta, it will end in Sotogran-
de port. In the third edition, in 2020, the Club Vendaval de Ceuta will act as host for the departure towards a beacon in the waters of Sotogrande, where the yachts will turn towards the Real Club Náutico de Algeciras. As well as being an open race exclusively for yachts crewed by three single sailors, this event is also unusual because the yacht which wins three editions, consecutively or alternately, will become the owner of the Estrecho A3 Trophy. The organisers are already preparing for the first edition of a very demanding race which highlights the Strait of Gibraltar and the difficulty of its waters, and has the support of the sailing federations of Ceuta and Andalucía.
Victory for Mercedes Vega at the José Banús Golf Trophy The spectacular course at the Real Club de Golf Las Brisas was the setting for the José Banús Trophy, – which counts towards the Andalusian Rankings for men and women – a tournament which pays tribute to the man who was the founder and first president of the emblematic club in Marbella from 1968 to 1981. More than 60 players from different parts of Andalucía took part and enjoyed the demanding and original course, which was designed by Robert Trent Jones. After two days in which two 18-hole rounds were played under stroke play scratch rules, the winners were Mercedes Vega and Alejandro Chacón. Among the ladies, the player from La Cañada Golf Club, Mercedes Vega, took first place after two identical rounds of 78 strokes, making a total of 156. It meant she only had a one-stroke advantage over her club colleague Mar García, who added 75 strokes to the 83 she already had. Special mention also for Beatriz Barrios from Seville, who played the best round of the tournament in the women’s classification: 73 strokes took her to third place at the end of the second day. With regard to the men’s classification, Alejandro Chacón, of Real Club de Golf Guadalmina, played an excellent first round of 69 strokes, thanks to which he led the tournament from start to finish. With a more modest card of 76 strokes he ended – with 145 in total – with five advantage strokes over the player from the Real Club de Golf Vista Hermosa, Juan Fernández de Mesa.

La Cañada Golf hosts the Spanish International Under-18 Men’s Championship
About twenty people take part in the yoga session in Torreguadiaro The seafront at Torreguadiaro was the setting for a yoga session which was organised jointly by the Centro Gaia and San Roque council’s Youth and Citizens’ Participation departments. About 20 “yogis” took part in this ses-
sion, which was completely free of charge, and they were able to see a fabulous sunset at the same time. It was an ideal way of harmonising mind and body through this discipline, while enjoying fantastic views beside the sea.
The free yoga session was open to people of all ages; the only condition was that everyone taking part had to bring their own mat. The Empresa Multimedia company of San Roque also collaborated with the event.

More than 80 golfers were keen not to miss the chance to enjoy the last event of the year (apart from the Grand Final) on the Circuit in this area It was a full and satisfying day on the high quality course at Finca Cortesín. This is, without a doubt, one of the top enclaves in the whole of southern Europe and the conditions were spectacular when it hosted the fifth scorable round on the VI Sotogrande Golf Circuit. This was the last one to take place in the area, because the final stop will be at RACE in Madrid (29 September). It was a sunny and splendid August morning and the wind, which was a crosswind at times, didn’t prove too much of a handicap for the players, although they had to focus well and apply themselves to the extreme, with the hard and competitive greens which only a course as beautifully maintained as Finca Cortesín can offer. More than 80 golfers were
keen not to miss the chance to enjoy the last event of the year (apart from the Grand Final) on the Sotogrande Golf Circuit, especially on a course in which the service and style are evident as soon as one arrives. After the work, it was time for the reward: a delicious cocktail party and prizegiving ceremony in the Club House, with premium brand drinks and and Covap Iberian meats carved in situ. Congratulations are due to the winners of this event: special prizes went to Alan Fordyce for the nearest ball, while Danielle Bostoen (for the Ladies) and Ignacio Gallardo were awarded a prize for the longest Drive. In the Ladies category, Ana Vega was the winner, accompanied on the podium by Bostoen again, and Sandra Hilinger in third place. In the
Second Men’s Category Diego Díaz won, beating Gonzalo Garay and Nicolás Larrain who came second and third respectively. In the First Men’s Category, Bruno Espinosa de los Monteros triumphed, and was accompanied on the podium by Nicolás Olazábal and Javier Mieleo. The next event will be on 29 September at RACE in Madrid. As always, thanks go to the patrons and sponsors of the circuit for the presence and their support: AON España, Marqués de Riscal, Plaza Abogados, Grupo Barcadi with Grey Goose and Bombay Sapphire, Ibéricos Covap, Hotel Club Marítimo Sotogrande, Restaurante Midas in Sotogrande Port, Plazas & Abogados, El Periódico de Sotogrande and La Revista de Sotogrande.

reasons two wheels are great for cities Bicycles are often praised for being energy efficient and non-polluting, but what exactly does this mean? And how about the environmental sustainability of bicycle networks? Here are three reasons why bicycles and bicycle networks are good for creating environmentally sustainable cities: Embodied Energy
The amount of energy required to produce a bicycle is tiny compared to many other forms of transport. A 7.2kg road bicycle with a carbon frame uses 11,546,658,000 Joules of energy during its production compared to 118,284,466,000 for a ‘generic car’ produced in America in 2008 (Figures via WattzOn). Variations exist based on bicycle type and
other external factors, but even taking this into consideration, the bicycle has a low embodied energy. Additionally, bicycle lane construction is less energy intensive than roads for automobiles, requiring a smaller amount of space and minimal foundations. Air quality
A bicycle’s environmental sustainability is about more than just low embodied energy. If enough people switch from polluting transport modes to a bicycle – a zero emission form of transport when in use – there is potential for reduced carbon emissions and improved air quality in our cities.
