EL VIGOR DE UNA PASIÓN EN CONSTANTE EVOLUCIÓN THE FORCE OF A PASSION IN CONSTANT EVOLUTION Curro Espinar, CEO Grupo HCP
Polo is undergoing a fascinating transformation in which youth, peak physical performance and the highest level of professionalism are setting the pace on the fields. Far from relying solely on tradition, we are witnessing the rise of a new generation of exceptionally wellprepared polo players; true elite athletes who are raising the tactical demands, speed and spectacle of the game to unprecedented levels. This qualitative leap finds its natural setting at the International Polo Tournament organised by Ayala at the iconic Los Pinos venue. A global-scale event that goes far beyond sport, establishing itself as a major socioeconomic driver for the entire Guadiaro Valley and the municipality of San Roque, generating wealth, dynamism and international visibility with every edition. Likewise, Ayala’s strategic vision has succeeded in expanding the sport’s seasonal boundaries through the consolidation of the spring tournaments. This intelligent commitment to extending the calendar throughout the year keeps equestrian activity alive, ensuring a continuous flow of competition and lifestyle that revitalises the area well before the peak of summer. All of this is part of a global phenomenon: polo continues to grow on the world stage, reaffirming its unique appeal to the most prestigious international brands and sponsors. The convergence of top-level sport, institutional commitment and the support of major brands ensures that the experience surrounding the field remains an unparalleled spectacle.

Five-time Sotogrande Gold Cup winner Facundo Pieres returns to these fields after missing the 2025 season, and he does so with one of the tournament favourites: Amanara, the defending champions of both the Terralpa Silver Cup and the Ayala Polo Club High Goal Gold Cup. He not only reflects on his team’s chances in the upcoming tournaments and the joy of sharing everything this place has to offer with his children, but also highlights how motivating it is to line up alongside such young talents as Lorenzo Chavanne and León Donoso, two of the brightest prospects in world polo.
ENTREVISTA / POLO BY LA BOCHA / 13
14 / POLO BY LA BOCHA / ENTREVISTA MODA
What are Amanara’s expectations for this season in Sotogrande? First of all, we want to connect as a team, build a solid system, play good polo and enjoy ourselves. If all of that comes together, the results are usually positive. That’s what we’re aiming for: to function well as a team, have fun and play at a high level. Obviously, once we achieve that, the goal will be to try to win. What does it mean to you to play for Amanara, the team that won both the Silver Cup and the Gold Cup in 2025? It’s very motivating because it’s a new team for me. I’ve never spent a season playing with the Chavannes, with Santi, whom I’ve known my whole life. They’re incredibly passionate about horses, breeding, playing well and winning, and that enthusiasm is contagious. It reaches me and makes me want to enjoy every moment. I’ve never played with Nicki (Sen) either, and being able to play alongside Lorenzo and León, two players who are both under 18, is really special.

16 / POLO BY LA BOCHA / ENTREVISTA
FACU PIERES Is playing with such young players an extra source of motivation? More than anything, it’s the motivation they give me. They remind me of what I was like when I was 18— how much I loved playing, competing, training and everything that comes with competition. That’s what I feel every day at the stables, during training sessions and practices. It really motivates me. What makes Sotogrande so special? There are so many things that make it unique. In August, it hosts the most competitive and historic tournament of the season, and that’s something extra for any player or patron. Having players like Tomi Panelo, the two Castagnolas, Lorenzo Chavanne, Antonio Heguy, Poroto, and Pablo Mac Donough here shows the prestige of this tournament. Winning against the very best is as good as it gets. Then there’s the setting itself: spending a season playing polo with the beach just a few minutes away, sharing it all with your family—I’m here with my children—is incredible. It’s one of the most beautiful places in the world to play polo. On top of that, there’s everything Ayala does: the quality of the fields, the organisation. They’ve done an outstanding job to ensure Sotogrande remains at the very highest level. Playing here in August, on these grounds, with this style of polo, using wooden balls... I don’t know, it has something truly special. Every time I come here, I enjoy it so much. How are you and your family experiencing this season, with so many Pieres playing here? This year something special happened: Nico came to play with my nephew, Indalecio, and I’m enjoying it so much. Watching them grow, seeing how they’re developing as players—it’s fantastic. Having them here is also very important to me because it’s wonderful to be surrounded by family. My children are here too, spending every day with their cousins and my sistersin-law, who help me enormously. In a few days my parents will arrive, so a big part of the family will be together here. Being able to support Inda and Félix and watch them up close as they begin this new chapter of playing and competing, seeing the enthusiasm they bring to it, is something very special.
ENTREVISTA / POLO BY LA BOCHA / 17
18 / POLO BY LA BOCHA / ENTREVISTA
Once the Sotogrande season ends, you’ll return to Argentina. What are Ellerstina Indios Chapaleufú’s goals for the rest of the season? The main thing is to get back, bring the team together and fully immerse ourselves in the season. I really enjoyed last year. I loved the way we played and sharing the team with the Heguys and Gonzalito—it was a very positive season for me. The goal now is to improve on what we achieved, because it was already something good. We played great polo and had some excellent matches. We were just missing a few details to win a tournament, and on a couple of occasions we came very close. So the focus is to keep working on what we already have: improving our horses, refining our system and strengthening the way we play together. I think there are a few areas where we can improve and help the team take another step forward. And that work is enjoyable because we’re building on solid foundations—a team that’s motivated, has great chemistry and already has a functioning system in place. You’ve won the Sotogrande Gold Cup five times. Is there one victory that stands out above the rest? Every one of them was special, but if I had to choose one, it would be the first. I think it was in 2010, the first year I came to play in Sotogrande with Nico, representing Ellerston. It was our first time here and also the first time I’d played a tournament of this level alongside him. I remember enjoying it so much because we won it together. We were both very young, and we played with James Packer, who was relaunching Ellerston at the time. If I had to pick one, it would probably be that one.

Few sporting events are as deeply connected to a place as polo is to Sotogrande. The 55th ATL International Polo Tournament once again highlights the significance of a competition that, year after year, continues to establish Sotogrande as one of the world’s premier polo destinations.

In Sotogrande, polo has never been just a sporting competition—it is part of the destination’s identity, its landscape and its unique way of experiencing the summer season.

THE BRONZE CUP OPENS THE SEASON The Gulf by Bionesta Bronze Cup, one of the first major competitions of the tournament, has already crowned its winners in all three divisions: Vamos Korea in the Low Goal, John Smith in the Medium Goal and Ayala in the High Goal. In the Medium Goal, John Smith produced one of the tournament’s most remarkable comebacks. P1 Cars El Bambú controlled much of the final, building a 4-0 lead after the opening two chukkers and later extending its advantage to 7-4 with only two periods remaining. The momentum then shifted dramatically. Alejandro Muzzio, who finished with eight goals, inspired John Smith’s comeback as the team overturned the deficit to claim an 11-8 victory. A decisive 3-1 final chukker completed the turnaround and secured the Bronze Cup for Gabriel Aguirre, Martín Valent, Pelayo Berazadi and Alejandro Muzzio. In the Low Goal, Vamos Korea defeated Polothanda 12-5.5 to become the first champions of the division and one of the standout teams of this new edition. Yet the High Goal Final was undoubtedly the match that captured the greatest attention. 22 / POLO BY LA BOCHA / POLO SOTOGRANDE
AYALA VUELVE A LO MÁS ALTO
AYALA RETURNS TO THE TOP
Ayala defeated Dos Lunas IQ 13-8 to lift the Gulf by Bionesta Bronze Cup on Field 3 at Los Pinos.
The match opened with both teams evenly matched, and Dos Lunas IQ carried a narrow 6-5 lead into halftime. The opening half was highlighted by the duel between Camilo Castagnola and Antonio Heguy, whose relentless marking limited the influence of the 10-goal superstar. The second half told a very different story.
Ayala produced its best polo in the fourth chukker, delivering a commanding 4-0 run that completely changed the course of the final. From that point on, Íñigo Zobel, Santiago Laborde, Félix Esaín and Camilo Castagnola controlled the match before sealing a convincing 13-8 victory.
The title carries special significance for Ayala, marking the team’s first High Goal trophy in Sotogrande since winning the Silver Cup five years ago.

The action on the field is only part of what makes the International Polo Tournament such a unique event. Over the decades, Sotogrande has developed its own way of staging world-class polo, blending elite sport with a vibrant social experience that accompanies spectators before, during and long after the matches.
The Bronze Cup has already added its first champions to the history of this 55th edition. Vamos Korea, John Smith and Ayala are the opening winners of a tournament with much more polo still to come.
Perhaps that is precisely what makes the Sotogrande International Polo Tournament so special: its 55 editions do not represent a completed story, but one that continues to be written.

What remains unchanged is the setting, the tradition and the unique relationship between Sotogrande and polo—a bond that has made this corner of southern Spain one of the essential destinations on the international polo calendar.

A new edition of the International Polo Tournament is underway on the fields of Ayala Polo Club and Ayala Los Pinos. A competition with 55 years of history, it has been organised by Ayala Polo Club since 2021. Íñigo Zobel, a third-generation polo player, was the one who, together with his organisation, made the decision in 2020 to take over the management of this prestigious tournament. Looking back, he says: “We believed Ayala was ready to take that step, and that’s exactly what we did.”
In the year of his return to High Goal polo—a category he had not competed in since 2021—the Ayala forward reflects on his team’s ambitions, what inspired him to return to competition, and his assessment after five years of Ayala leading the International Polo Tournament.
ENTREVISTA / POLO BY LA BOCHA / 29
Íñigo, what inspired you to return to polo, and specifically to High Goal competition? When Santi (Laborde) told me about the project and said I would be playing alongside Jeta (Camilo Castagnola), that was what truly convinced me to come back. I had already retired, but an opportunity like that doesn’t come along every day. I set myself one condition: I had to lose ten kilos and get back into the physical shape required to compete at the High Goal level. I did it, and now I’m genuinely excited to enjoy this sport again.
How do you rate the level of this year’s tournament? I think it’s going to be an extremely competitive tournament. There are several teams with outstanding quality and, in the end, in a competition like this, everything depends on how each team arrives and what happens on the field that day. We’re very happy with the team we’ve put together, and I honestly believe anyone can win. That says a lot about the level of polo we’re going to see.
Is it an added challenge to play alongside Camilo Castagnola, who is considered the best player in the world? Quite the opposite. Playing with Camilo is exactly what made me decide to return. More than pressure, it’s a privilege. He has extraordinary talent, but he’s also a fantastic teammate who always plays for the benefit of the team. Sharing the field with him is a unique experience.

ENTREVISTA / POLO BY LA BOCHA / 31
Looking back a few years, what led Ayala to take on the organisation of polo in Sotogrande? Our connection with polo in Sotogrande goes back long before we started organising the tournament. My father (Enrique Zobel) was one of the pioneers of polo here. He began playing on the beach fields and later helped develop several grounds that became part of Sotogrande’s polo history. He was always deeply involved, although he never wanted to manage the tournament himself. As the years passed, and after his passing, we felt it was the right time to take on that responsibility. There was a great deal of work to be done and significant investment was needed to restore the tournament to the level it deserved: improving the fields, strengthening the organisation and providing the level of service that players, sponsors and fans expect from a tournament of this calibre. We believed Ayala was ready to take that step, and that’s exactly what we did. Five years after taking over as organisers, how would you assess the experience? The overall assessment is very positive. It’s been five years of incredibly hard work, but also of tremendous 32 / POLO BY LA BOCHA / ENTREVISTA

learning. Today, I believe we have an outstanding team of professionals who have helped raise the tournament’s standards in every respect. I’m very proud of everyone at Ayala, of Sebastián (Viera), of Minuto Siete and of all the people who make this tournament possible. I’m also delighted to see the quality of the fields and the number of teams that continue to choose Sotogrande year after year. There will always be things we can improve, but I think the journey so far has been a very successful one. What are your expectations for this year’s International Polo Tournament? What is the team aiming for? Our expectations are very high. We want to enjoy the tournament, be competitive and fight until the very end. We know the level will be extremely demanding, but we have a team with tremendous potential and we’re approaching the challenge with great excitement.
What does polo mean in your life, and what does Sotogrande represent to you? Polo has been part of my life since the day I was born. I’m the third generation of a polo family: my grandfather (Jacobo Zobel) played, my father played, and I was fortunate enough to follow the same path. Beyond the competition itself, polo has always been my greatest passion. After work, my place has always been the club and the horses. I also have a deep passion for horse breeding, and I hope to remain connected to the sport for many years to come, even if it’s no longer from inside the field. My greatest dream now is to watch the next generation play. I hope my grandchildren—Matias, Íñigo and Lucas—will also discover a love for this sport. I’ll never force them; I simply want to give them the opportunity to experience everything that polo has given me. Sotogrande holds a very special place in that story. I grew up here, watching polo evolve through the work of my father and so many others who helped shape this destination. Being able to continue that legacy and contribute to the growth of the tournament is, without a doubt, one of my greatest satisfactions.

GOLD CUP FOR THE

BRITISH OPEN 2026
AN EPIC FINAL IN A STORY THAT KEEPS GROWING The St. Regis Cowdray Gold Cup once again delivered a memorable final, showcasing exceptional polo and an emotional storyline that made the occasion even more special: the long-awaited showdown between cousins Cruz Heguy and Antonio Heguy, heirs to a family legacy that has shaped Argentine polo for more than six decades. On Sunday, 19 July, Gaston Polo Team produced a superb performance to edge Dubai Polo Team 9–8 in the championship match at Cowdray Park Polo Club in Midhurst, West Sussex, England.
The victory carried symbolic significance as well. Cruz Heguy got the better of his cousin Antonio, sons of two legends of the sport—Eduardo “Ruso” Heguy and Alberto “Pepe” Heguy—both of whom won titles at Cowdray Park and captured the Argentine Open four times with Indios Chapaleufú II. Competing in its first-ever Cowdray Gold Cup final, Gaston entered the match with a 21-goal handicap and started with a one-goal handicap advantage. Their opponents, Dubai, are one of polo’s most successful organisations, having won the title six times, including the 2024 edition with Antonio Heguy in the lineup.

From the opening chukker, Gaston displayed confidence and precision, racing into a 3–0 lead. Dubai responded strongly in the second period, cutting the deficit to trail 5–4 at half-time. L e d
by Bartolomé Castagnola Jr. and Antonio Heguy, who combined for seven goals, Dubai maintained relentless pressure throughout the second half. Yet JeanPaul Luksic’s side held onto its narrow advantage, finishing the fourth chukker ahead 7–6 and the fifth 8–7. With everything still to play for, the sixth and final chukker lived up to expectations. After Cruz Heguy extended Gaston’s lead to 9–7, Dubai immediately responded through Santos Merlos, closing the gap to a single goal with just two minutes remaining.
From that point on, Gaston defended resolutely, repelling every attack to secure a hard-fought and historic 9–8 victory—claiming its first-ever St. Regis Cowdray Gold Cup title in its very first appearance in the tournament final.

Beyond the result itself, the final produced one of the most memorable images of the season: the new generation of the Heguy family competing on one of polo’s greatest stages, carrying forward a remarkable legacy that began 70 years ago, when the inaugural edition of the tournament was won by Los Indios, featuring Antonio Heguy, the great-grandfather of both Cruz and Antonio. A story of talent, tradition and passion that continues to grow.

Reflecting on his performance in the decisive match, Cruz summed it up simply: “Yes, it was incredible. I think all four of us gave absolutely everything. We knew we had to play our very best to win, and it turned into a dream day. Our horses performed brilliantly, and that was crucial. The team played perfectly throughout all six chukkers.” The conversation moves forward with laughter and a relaxed atmosphere before turning to the substitution of Pelón Stirling and the arrival of Gonzalo Ferrari for the final. How did you experience that change? “They’re both incredible. Pelón brought us so much experience and calm. Having him, the Ruso, Nachi and everyone supporting us from outside the field was a real privilege. And Gonza is a fantastic guy—I played with him last year. He’s fearless, determined, he gives everything. An outstanding player.” Amid the excitement, Cruz offers a deeper reflection on the final, revealing both his maturity and the weight of the family legacy he carries.

“The truth is, it was a very difficult final. Fortunately, our team functioned really well and managed to make the difference at the key moments. I’m grateful to everyone supporting us off the field: Pelón, who couldn’t play but was a fundamental part of the team; the Ruso and Nachi, who shared their experience and knowledge from the sidelines. With such an incredible group of people around us, we were able to achieve this victory. I also want to thank Jean Paul Luksic for believing in us and putting this team together. Thankfully, we were able to deliver the title.” The atmosphere throughout the interview is relaxed— almost like a family gathering. That is hardly surprising. Cruz represents the fourth generation of the Heguy family, a dynasty that has left an indelible mark on Argentine and international polo. From his great-grandfather Antonio Heguy, who won the inaugural British Open in 1956, to the legendary Eduardo “Ruso” Heguy, Alberto “Pepe” Heguy and Nachi Heguy, the family has built one of the sport’s greatest legacies—one that Cruz now carries forward with quiet confidence and pride. He grew up surrounded by players who won the Argentine Open, the Queen’s Cup, and many of the world’s most prestigious tournaments. He learned by watching, listening and playing alongside them, absorbing not only technique and strategy but also the competitive mindset that always defined the Heguy name. That upbringing explains his remarkable maturity on the field and his instinctive understanding of the game, as though polo were a language he has spoken all his life. Today, Cruz is a 7-goal player, a 2025 Argentine Open finalist with Ellerstina Indios Chapaleufú, and now a British Open champion with Gaston Polo Team. There could hardly have been a better way to end the English season: trophy in hand, and an exciting future stretching out before him. Cruz smiles. He knows he is writing his own chapter in a story that began more than 70 years ago—a story that remains alive, continues to evolve and, with players like him, promises many more unforgettable moments still to come.

The Queen’s Cup final, played on Sunday, 14 June, will be remembered as one of those occasions when a team reaches its absolute peak at exactly the right moment. Balanz Capital enjoyed an unforgettable day at Windsor Great Park, producing a superb display of polo to capture the title with a commanding 17–7 victory over Aureus. It was a performance that combined composure, power and outstanding teamwork from the very first chukker, led by two players who shone above all others: Jeta Castagnola and Lorenzo Chavanne. The match began evenly, with the opening chukker ending 2–2, reflecting the intensity of both sides. But in the second period, Balanz Capital edged ahead 5–4, laying the foundation for what would become a dominant display. From the third chukker onwards, Claudio Porcel’s team completely took control of the game. Before halftime, they produced a remarkable 5–1 run to build a commanding 10–5 lead, demonstrating a level of superiority that Aureus was unable to overcome. Balanz Capital’s attacking partnership proved decisive. Between them, Jeta Castagnola and Lorenzo Chavanne scored 15 of the team’s 17 goals—seven from the elder Castagnola and eight from the 18-year-old Chavanne, who continues to establish himself as one of the brightest young talents in world polo.
50 / POLO BY LA BOCHA / POLO INTERNACIONAL
Chavanne’s 2026 season has already been extraordinary. He has now claimed two Gauntlet of Polo titles in Palm Beach with Pilot, the Trippetts Challenge in England, and now the Queen’s Cup, one of the most prestigious trophies on the international polo calendar. Balanz Capital maintained its relentless momentum throughout the second half. The score reached an almost unassailable 15–6 before the final chukker, where the team added two more goals to complete a historic 17–7 victory—a tengoal margin that reflected the quality of their performance. It was a convincing, hard-earned and thoroughly deserved triumph that also completed a flawless campaign, with Balanz Capital finishing the tournament unbeaten. The final also highlighted the determination of Aureus, who fought until the very end through the experience of Diego Cavanagh, Teo Lacau and Mark Tomlinson. Nevertheless, Balanz Capital’s collective strength proved overwhelming. Meanwhile, the Cartier Trophy Subsidiary Final delivered its own drama, as Akasha defeated Gaston 10–9 in an extra chukker, rounding off another spectacular day of polo at Windsor Great Park. A memorable conclusion to a tournament that once again demonstrated why the Queen’s Cup remains one of the sport’s greatest showcases of excellence.

Argentine Patagonia embodies this philosophy of travel like few places on Earth. It is a land of glaciers, towering mountains and endless lakes, but also a region where traditions remain deeply rooted and where nature continues to set the rhythm of everyday life.
The journey centres around staying in historic estancias, many of them built by the first settlers and still dedicated to cattle and sheep farming today.

66 / POLO BY LA BOCHA / VIAJES
As a guide, a private journey of six to ten days offers the perfect opportunity to explore the region at a relaxed pace, staying in historic estancias while combining Patagonia’s most iconic landscapes with experiences deeply connected to local life and tradition. In the end, glaciers remain in the memory because of their immense scale, lakes because of their extraordinary colours and mountains because of their endless horizons. But there is another image that often stays with travellers long after they return home: a gaucho riding quietly across the Patagonian steppe, pointing the way along a path he has known all his life. For Patagonia is unforgettable because of its landscapes—but truly moving because of the people who call it home.
The heart of high performance and Adolfo Cambiaso’s vision ✎
La Dolfina
68 / POLO BY LA BOCHA / LIFESTYLE
Located in Cañuelas, La Dolfina Polo Club is today one of the most influential high-performance polo centres in the world. Founded in 1997 by Adolfo Cambiaso, it has become not only the sporting base of the greatest polo player in history, but also his home. Whenever Cambiaso and his family are in Argentina—except when visiting their breeding operation in Córdoba—La Dolfina is where they choose to be.
At its core, La Dolfina is the realisation of a vision that has transformed the surrounding region. Spanning 120 hectares, the club boasts world-class sporting facilities, including six polo fields, two practice grounds, a conditioning track, and six stables, allowing horses and players to train at the highest level throughout the year. Its influence extends far beyond the club itself through La Dolfina Polo Ranch, an exclusive residential community built around polo. Numerous international patrons and professionals have established their own polo centres there, helping to position Cañuelas as one of the world’s leading polo hubs.

The club also offers outstanding social facilities that strengthen its community, including a welcoming Club House and a polo academy dedicated to developing the next generation of players under the guidance of experienced professionals. Competition is at the heart of La Dolfina’s identity. Each year, its tournaments continue to grow in prestige, combining impeccable organisation with international live broadcasts on The Polo Channel, bringing every match to audiences around the world. The annual calendar features competitions across multiple categories, including men’s tournaments, the prestigious Ladies’ Cup, and the Dolineta—also known as the Diamantitos Cup—a youth competition where future stars take their first competitive steps under the guidance of the club’s sporting team. The highlight of the season comes each November, when La Dolfina hosts some of its most iconic tournaments. The Zafiro Cup, the club’s flagship 16-goal event, has now celebrated more than twenty editions and remains one of the most anticipated competitions of the year. The Ladies’ Cup, organised in partnership with Santa María de Lobos, attracts top international female players to compete in both 14- and 16-goal tournaments. Meanwhile, the Diamantitos Cup provides a family-friendly environment where young players experience their first taste of competitive polo surrounded by nature. 70 / POLO BY LA BOCHA / LIFESTYLE

La Dolfina is far more than a polo club—it is a unique sporting, residential and social ecosystem that perfectly reflects Adolfo Cambiaso’s vision. As that vision continues to grow, so does Cañuelas, a place where elite performance coexists with family life, the development of future generations and a relentless pursuit of excellence. From the heart of Argentina, La Dolfina continues to shape the future of world polo.

With a history spanning more than a century, C. de Salamanca remains one of Spain’s leading luxury automotive groups, driven by a strategy focused on adapting to the evolving expectations of customers, brands and premium mobility services.
The company’s modern history began in the late 1960s, when entrepreneur Javier Toda acquired the business founded by Carlos de Salamanca. Although the company already enjoyed a long-established reputation, it was under Toda’s leadership that it entered a new era of growth and diversification. The group developed a dual strategy, combining the distribution of volume brands with a strong presence in the premium and luxury automotive sectors.
Over the following decades, C. de Salamanca represented an extensive portfolio of manufacturers, including Jaguar, Land Rover, Aston Martin, Ferrari, Maserati, Honda, Opel and Peugeot, while also expanding into complementary businesses such as recreational boating and light aircraft.
84 / POLO BY LA BOCHA / AUTOMOCIÓN
Javier Toda became one of the most influential figures in the Spanish automotive industry. Under his direction, the group held the Renault distribution network in Madrid, supported by an extensive workshop network throughout the capital. In the early 1980s, the company further strengthened its position through Opel, coinciding with the brand’s industrial expansion in Spain. Later, following changes in Renault’s commercial alliances, the business shifted its retail network towards SEAT, consolidating dealerships such as Mavilsa and Secorsa.
Another of Toda’s strategic investments was the Costa del Sol. C. de Salamanca established its presence there during the 1960s before expanding into Marbella and San Pedro Alcántara, steadily developing facilities that remain among the benchmark destinations for luxury automotive retail in one of Spain’s most competitive markets.
Beyond his entrepreneurial achievements, Javier Toda was a passionate automotive enthusiast. His commitment to the industry extended well beyond vehicle sales, leading to the creation of complementary services including a specialist administrative agency and Centro de Seguros, an insurance company that was later acquired by El Corte Inglés. His career also included highly distinctive projects, such as managing the sale of the Royal Guard’s Harley-Davidson motorcycles and maintaining several Rolls-Royce Phantom IV vehicles belonging to Spain’s National Heritage collection. Javier Toda passed away in a road accident in Madrid in March 1998.

Alex Ruiz is Clinical Director of Horizon Health, an integrated preventive healthcare project that combines science with personalised care to transform the way people look after their health.
“Where science meets the vocation to care.” This is how Horizon Health defines itself—a project born in Sotogrande from a shared vision that brings together science, clinical expertise and a genuine commitment to caring for people, creating a healthcare model that is more precise, more personal and fundamentally preventive.
Founded by Mercedes Cuenca, Esther Puche, Antonio Fernández del Villar and Alex Ruiz, Horizon Health is preparing to celebrate its first anniversary, having established a philosophy that places prevention and personalisation at the heart of healthcare. To mark this milestone, Polo by La Bocha sat down with Alex Ruiz, Clinical Director of Horizon Health, to discuss the importance of prevention, elite sports performance and the need to understand health through an individual approach. Throughout the conversation, he reflects on the physical and mental challenges faced by elite athletes, why recovery has become one of the decisive factors in performance, and how science can support the body when it is pushed to its highest level.
For readers who may not know you yet, how did your professional journey lead you towards preventive healthcare and performance optimisation?
I’m originally from Valencia, and I’m a Physiotherapist, Osteopath, Nutritionist and Psychoneuroimmunologist. I began my career working in my family’s clinic, as my family has always been closely connected to healthcare and sport. My goal has never been simply to treat illness, but to prevent it whenever possible, because I believe that is where many healthcare systems around the world still fall short.
What do you think is the biggest mistake people make when trying to take care of their health?
The biggest mistake is failing to focus on prevention. Just as in finance or many other areas of life, prevention is the smartest and most efficient approach.
The objective should always be to stop problems from developing in the first place, because once they appear they become much more difficult to solve, even though there is almost always room for improvement.
To me, preventive medicine is true healthcare. Most of my work is based on measuring objective biomarkers, particularly through blood analysis. These tests provide invaluable information and allow us to anticipate how both patients and athletes are likely to evolve.

92 / POLO BY LA BOCHA / ENTREVISTA
Your work in elite sport has led you to collaborate with professional tennis players such as Carlos Alcaraz, Nicolás Moreno de Alborán, Darwin Blanch and Mayar Sherif. You also work with athletes including golfer Ángel Ayora, world number one padel player Delfi Brea and footballer Eva Navarro. What does it mean to support athletes performing under such intense pressure? That’s exactly where I try to add value. Even if I contribute only one per cent, at the highest level that small margin can make all the difference. Working with elite athletes is incredibly demanding because they live under constant sporting and media pressure. That’s why it’s essential to monitor and optimise factors that may appear minor from the outside but become decisive when competing at the highest level. How do elite athletes differ from the average person in the way they understand and manage their health? Elite athletes start from a different position. They have the mindset, motivation and often the genetics needed to compete at the highest level. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean they fully understand the importance of prevention or know how to take care of themselves in a way that supports a long sporting career. Many athletes still underestimate everything they could do to extend their careers and maintain peak performance. Today we talk a great deal about longevity and healthy ageing, and I believe that same philosophy should also apply to athletic careers.

In sports such as tennis and padel, where I spend most of my time, performance often begins to decline after the age of thirty. Golf is different, of course, where careers can last much longer, but ultimately longevity always depends on physical health, mental wellbeing and avoiding serious injury. After working alongside some of the world’s best athletes, what lesson do you believe anyone can apply to everyday life? Without question: attitude. I’ve also learned that talent alone is never enough. Someone may have extraordinary natural ability or exceptional genetics, but without attitude, discipline and consistency, reaching the highest level becomes extremely difficult. Everything has to work together. But if you have the right attitude, you’ve already travelled a large part of the journey. For me, that’s the real difference. Polo is a sport of constant changes in intensity and enormous physical and mental demands. From your perspective, what aspects of preparation are most important for polo players? Polo is an extremely demanding sport and one that also carries a significant risk of injury. For that reason, players must be exceptionally well prepared, both physically and mentally, because their bodies are constantly exposed to high levels of stress.
The greater the physical and mental demands, the greater the need to control every factor influencing performance and recovery. That includes nutrition, circadian rhythms, jet lag management—particularly as many players travel constantly around the world—chronobiology and carefully planned supplementation. This is why individualisation is so important. Every athlete— and every polo player—needs a programme tailored specifically to their own needs in order to prevent injuries, maximise performance and extend their career in a sport where physical impact and serious injuries are part of the game. Would you say that, in polo as in any elite sport, recovery can determine the outcome? Absolutely. For me, recovery is the first priority if you expect to perform again the following day, whether in training or competition.
Recovery should always be planned, and this is still one of the areas where many athletes fall short. It’s not simply about resting. It’s about nutrition, knowing exactly what to eat immediately after training or competition, and applying recovery strategies such as sauna sessions or ice baths whenever appropriate. The key is having a structured recovery plan in place. The moment training or competition finishes, recovery should already begin.
“The key is to prevent problems from arising in the first place, because once they appear, they become far more difficult to address.”
Longevity has become one of the biggest topics in health today. What does “ageing well” really mean, and how much influence do genetics and lifestyle have? “Ageing well” means being able to continue doing, with the highest possible quality of life, the things you’ve enjoyed throughout your life. We all age, but we don’t all age at the same rate, and genetics certainly plays an important role.
That’s why I spend a great deal of time studying genetics and analysing each person’s DNA. That information allows me to understand where targeted interventions— whether through supplementation or other personalised strategies—can help compensate for an individual’s genetic predispositions. That said, genetics isn’t everything. You may have outstanding genes, but if you don’t take care of yourself, you won’t achieve your full potential. Looking ahead, how do you see medicine and nutrition evolving over the next ten years? I believe they will become far more personalised. That’s undoubtedly the direction we’re heading. Medicine and nutrition should be entirely tailored to each individual, making use of everything we can measure—from blood analysis and wearable technology to genetics and countless other sources of biological data.

It simply doesn’t make sense for everyone to receive the same treatment, the same diet or the same supplementation when every person is biologically unique. In sport, this becomes even more important. The approach should be adapted to each athlete, taking into account the discipline they practise, their training load and even their specific role within the sport. Today we can personalise performance strategies to an extraordinary level because every athlete has completely different physiological needs. After discussing prevention, performance and longevity, it seems that understanding our own bodies is the common thread. Finally, what advice would you give to any athlete—professional or amateur—who wants to improve their health and extend their sporting career? My advice would be simple: get to know your own body. The more you understand your biochemistry, your physiology and your immune system, the easier it becomes to receive truly personalised support. Understanding how your body functions from the inside is, in my opinion, one of the most important steps towards preventing illness, optimising performance and protecting your health over the long term. 96 / POLO BY LA BOCHA / ENTREVISTA
BAYO MARÍA MEDEM VISTE DE CARÁCTER ANDALUZ EL PRIMER “ESCAPARATE DE ARTISTA” DE HERMÈS EN MARBELLA MARÍA MEDEM BRINGS AN ANDALUSIAN SPIRIT TO HERMÈS MARBELLA’S FIRST ARTIST-DESIGNED WINDOW DISPLAY Un escaparate como identidad, marca y reconocimiento de una gran firma.

A Storefront as Identity, Craftsmanship and Brand Expression A window display can be far more than a showcase—it can become an expression of identity, craftsmanship and the values of a great maison. BAYO, the installation created by María Medem for Hermès Marbella, transforms the boutique’s six windows into a visual narrative inspired by Hermès’ 2026 annual theme, L’Appel du Large (“The Call of the Open Sea” or “The Call of the Unknown”). Through a rich visual and sensory language, the installation unfolds in three distinct acts.

Moving beyond illustration, María Medem explores three-dimensional space through handcrafted Andalusian objects, creating an installation where tradition, innovation and cultural identity are woven together. The project reflects the shared values of Hermès and the artist, developed in close collaboration with local artisans, including blacksmiths, religious wood sculptors, seamstresses and ceramicists. Across the six windows, symbolic elements deeply rooted in Andalusian culture—rosemary, woven rush chairs and traditional búcaros (earthenware vessels)— are brought together in a carefully choreographed artistic dialogue, where craftsmanship and contemporary expression exist in perfect harmony. BAYO unfolds from left to right as a journey in three acts, guiding visitors towards new horizons. It begins with an awakening, where colour announces the start of a new day and everything still feels possible. As the narrative progresses, the installation becomes increasingly exploratory. Soft pinks and deep reds transform the atmosphere, while what is visible coexists with what is merely suggested, inviting viewers to complete the story through their own imagination. Rather than presenting a fixed interpretation, the installation encourages each visitor to construct their own reality. Fantasy merges with objects deeply embedded in Andalusian tradition, inviting us to travel—not necessarily to unfamiliar places, but towards a new way of seeing what has always been there. 102 / POLO BY LA BOCHA / LIFESTYLE

Perspective lies at the heart of María Medem’s proposal. The installation begins with a simple yet profound idea: reality changes according to the eyes that observe it. A landscape, a gesture or an everyday object can acquire entirely different meanings when viewed from another angle. Within the context of a shop window, this concept becomes even more powerful. Light changes through-
out the day, people pass by at different moments, and every window, shadow and material layer reveals new nuances over time. No two visitors experience exactly the same image—or the same meaning.
104 / POLO BY LA BOCHA / LIFESTYLE
The installation invites audiences on a journey of reflection, encouraging them to discover new beginnings within what is already familiar. The landscape awakens through colour, signalling the start of a new day. As the journey unfolds, the skies become richer with shades of pink and crimson, while an immersive colour palette transforms the perception of space, revealing how a single place can be endlessly reimagined through changing light. Throughout the installation, the visible and the suggested remain in constant dialogue, engaging visitors not only visually but emotionally.

Sotogrande The polo that built Sotogrande
There are photographs that explain a place better than any text ever could. A polo field, a few horses, a group of players and, around them, those who have come to watch. In those old images of Sotogrande, there is more than a polo match: there is a way of life beginning to take shape. Because if there is one story that has unfolded alongside the story of Sotogrande, it is the story of polo.
HISTORIA / POLO BY LA BOCHA / 121
Empezó a crear relaciones.
122 / POLO BY LA BOCHA / HISTORIA
It all began in the 1960s, when Enrique Zóbel brought to this corner of southern Europe his passion for a sport he had discovered in the Philippines. In 1965, the first polo field was built, the legendary La Playa field, which would become much more than simply a place to play. On 12 October 1967, with its official inauguration, some of Spain’s finest polo players arrived in Sotogrande. It was a tournament, of course, but it was also an introduction. Many of those names would return. Some would eventually make Sotogrande part of their summers and, ultimately, part of their lives. And perhaps that is one of the keys to this story. Polo did not simply settle in Sotogrande. It began to create connections. Afternoons at La Playa brought players, families and residents together around a shared passion. They played, they watched, they talked about horses and matches; and when the final chukka was over, life continued beyond the field. Little by little, polo began to weave a community. Then came new fields and new chapters. Paniagua witnessed those years in which Sotogrande was growing while still retaining its intimate character. Later, Río took over and polo began to acquire a new dimension. Puente de Hierro and Haciendas de San Enrique followed, together with the progressive professionalisation of the tournament. The protagonists changed too. The names that had shaped those early years were joined by leading patrons and international players. The Gold Cup and Silver Cup gained prestige, and Sotogrande began to establish itself on the international polo map with ever greater strength.
HISTORIA / POLO BY LA BOCHA / 123
124 / POLO BY LA BOCHA / HISTORIA
The 1990s marked a turning point. More teams, more horses, major sponsors and increasingly professional organisation. Polo remained an integral part of life in Sotogrande, but it had now also become one of its greatest showcases. In 2008, Los Pinos arrived and the setting once again grew in scale. That small seaside polo field of the 1960s was by then a distant memory. Yet the essence remained the same: horses, players, spectators and a summer afternoon.

HISTORIA / POLO BY LA BOCHA / 125
More than six decades later, the fields have changed, the tournaments have grown and several generations have taken up the baton. But something remains. The Zóbel name is still closely linked to polo, and new generations continue to write a story that began with a seemingly simple idea: to make horses and polo an essential part of Sotogrande. Perhaps that is why, when we think of Sotogrande, it is difficult to imagine it without polo. Because polo did not simply come to this place. In many ways, polo helped build it.

Federico Levy Una nueva era para el polo en Sotogrande A new era for polo in Sotogrande Tradición, comunidad y un deporte abierto a todos
Tradition, Community and a Sport Open to Everyone
A new season has arrived. After so many years covering the growth of polo and recognising the outstanding work carried out by Santa María Polo Club—together with all the clubs across the region that continue to support and strengthen the circuit—our excitement for the season ahead has never been greater.
Every year, Sotogrande and its surrounding area warmly welcome the organisations that choose southern Europe’s premier polo destination for an unforgettable season. Throughout this journey, La Bocha has been there every step of the way, supporting the sport, its players and their families, sharing the passion of every match and every moment. This season, however, we are raising the bar. With our focus firmly on the present and the future of the game, we are committed to delivering even broader, deeper and more dynamic coverage. We are proud to join forces with PoloHUB, united by a shared ambition: to strengthen the international communication and visibility of the sport. That means something both simple and meaningful: › More conversations › More voices › More families › More coverage › And, above all, more polo A polo that belongs to everyone Above all else, we want to emphasise one fundamental belief: polo is an inclusive sport. Its continued growth depends on opening its doors, bringing the excitement of the game to new audiences and demonstrating that this remarkable community is welcoming, accessible and open to everyone. Only by embracing this vision can polo continue to grow, evolve and secure its future for generations to come. Welcome to a new season.
