Estar en las manos de nuestros lectores en plena temporada es una cuestión que siempre nos hace pensar, ¿es mejor al inicio? Pues la decisión es bien sencilla, a mitad de agosto se respira polo por todos los rincones y todo el mundo tomó partido por un equipo u otro, además de haber disfrutado de algunas tardes únicas presenciando excelentes partidos con cinco jugadores entre sus formaciones con el 10 en su calificación de los mejores del mundo: Adolfo Cambiaso, Facundo y Gonzalo Pieres, Juan Martin Nero y David “Pelón” Stirling un uruguayo con un marcado carácter afable y que consideramos nuestro jugador aquí en Sotogrande. Además de otros jugadores difíciles de ver habitualmente juntos en una competición como esta. Gran apuesta del Santa María Polo Club por consolidar un torneo que permite codearse entre los mejores del mundo. Por tanto, antes de saber quien disputa la primera gran final (plata) estaremos entre ustedes con el deseo de satisfacer las curiosidades y peculiaridades de jugadores y patrones de lo mas selecto a través de nuestras paginas.

Atrás quedó la Gold Cup y Coronation Cup en UK, de las cuales llevamos contenidos muy amenos con excelentes imágenes. Hemos pasado por un bonito proyecto que emprende el incombustible Patrick Guerrand Hermès en Larache – Marruecos que se inaugura en este otoño. Interesantes entrevistas a Bob Jornayvaz y Pite Merlos, con el deseo de ver la visión de patrón y jugador a su paso por Sotogorande. Martin Iturraspe nos desvela sus deseos de potenciar al prestigioso Dos Lunas Polo Club con mas polo para la zona. En resumen una publicación cargada de contenidos frescos y muy recientes para disfrute de los aficionados al polo, que por fortuna cada vez son mas en España, además de la cantidad de seguidores en todo el planeta.

Toda una gran temporada para disfrutar de lo lindo, y como reflejan la mayoría de los entrevistados, “Sotogrande es un lugar único para disfrutar del polo en familia”, y que lo digan, porque cada equipo entre jugadores, técnicos, cuidadores y familias forman una expedición que bien podrían ocupar un hotel completo por si solos. Y doce equipos de alto hándicap significa un elevado numero de ocupación. Esto es proyectar el turismo de calidad y con aportación de riquezas. Confiamos que nuestras autoridades tomen cumplida nota de la importancia del polo y todo lo relacionado con el mundo del caballo, porque a la hora de contemplar los proyectos casi siempre están complicando los nuevos desarrollos. Habrán visto Wellington (USA) y Pilar (ARG) en alguna ocasión? Seria bueno una excursión por estos emblemáticos lugares para tomar referencias.

Desde La Bocha Polo Magazine, seguiremos apoyando y apostando por el polo de una forma audaz y comprometida.

Queremos que el polo siga creciendo con la mayor calidad, y que sus patrones se sientan bien acogidos. Disfruten de una gran temporada y de todo lo que rodea a este rincón mágico.

Working on the midseason edition of this magazine always makes us wonder, is the middle better than the beginning? Well, the answer is simple really. By mid-August you see polo everywhere you go, and everyone has decided which team they are supporting. You’ve had the chance to enjoy various afternoons watching fantastic matches with some of the best players in the world on the field, five of whom boast an impressive 10-goal handicap: Adolfo Cambiaso, Facundo and Gonzalo Pieres, Juan Martin Nero and David “Pelón” Stirling, the affable Uruguayan who we tend to consider one of the family here in Sotogrande. And by this time, you’ve also had the privilege of seeing a rare combination of other top-level players. It really was a brilliant decision by Santa María Polo Club to create one tournament at which everyone can rub shoulders with polo royalty. So, even before we know who will be playing in the first grand final of the silver cup, we thought we would try to satisfy your curiosity with some great interviews and articles on the very best players and owners.

The Gold Cup and the Coronation Cup, which took place in the UK, are already behind us, but they left us with some great information and fantastic photos. We also went to Larache in Morocco to visit an excellent new project being set up by the bombproof Patrick Guerrand Hermès that is set to open its doors this autumn. We talked to horse owner Bob Jornayvaz and player Pite Merlos while they were passing through Sotogrande to learn a little about what polo means to them and, in another interview, Martin Iturraspe revealed to us his plan to bring more polo to the area through the prestigious Dos Lunas Polo Club. In short, this is an edition packed full of fresh, new content for all lovers of polo to enjoy, and we are happy to say that there are more and more of these in Spain these days, together with the many thousands of followers of the sport all over the world.

It is turning out to be a truly great season in what the majority of those we interviewed described as a unique place where you can truly enjoy polo as a family. And family is right, since every team, with its players, trainers, minders and families make up a sizeable crowd that could quite easily fill up an entire hotel. Twelve high handicap teams arriving in Sotogrande certainly means good things for the local hotels, and it just goes to show the resort’s potential for top-level, luxury tourism. We hope that the government are taking note of the importance of polo and other equestrian sports to the area, because it often seems as though whenever an idea for a new project is suggested, they are the ones creating barriers to these developments. Perhaps it would be a good idea to send the local government on a visit to look around Wellington (USA) or Pilar (ARG) in Argentina so that they might be inspired by these iconic polo locations.

La temporada de polo en Sotogrande está en plena ebullicón con la disputa del 43º Torneo Internacional Land Rover de Polo que organiza Santa María Polo Club.

Las mejores organizaciones de polo del mundo, con las grandes estrellas de esta disciplina defendiendo sus respectivos colores, están brindando una temporada histórica, como nunca antes ha vivido Santa María Polo Club.

Lo hizo al ganar la Copa de Bronce Isolas que se adjudicó tras vencer en la final a Ayala Polo Team 11 a 7.

De esta manera, la organización estadounidense, pegó primero en una temporada que al cierre de esta edición viene siendo muy competitiva y con dos trofeos aún en disputa, la Copa de Plata Silex y la Copa de Oro Bulgari.

Ellerston, campeón de la Copa de Plata y Oro de la edición 2013, tiene una dura defensa de sus conquistas ante equipos que se han armado muy bien y cuyas organizaciones han desembarcado con todo su “arsenal” de caballos en Sotogrande.

Cuando nuestro querido lector este terminando de leer este artículo seguramente las copas de Plata y Oro ya tengan dueño. Sotogrande’s polo season is already underway with twelve of the best teams in the world competing in an historic tournament and Bob Jornayvaz’s team Valiente, featuring player Adolfo Cambiaso, has already lifted the first cup of the season on their debut at Santa María Polo Club Sotogrande’s polo season is in full gear with the 43rd Land Rover International Polo Tournament organised by Santa María Polo Club now underway.

The world’s best polo organisations are putting on an historic season- the likes of which have never before been seen at Santa María Polo Club- with the sport’s big stars going out to defend their respective teams.

The cast of stars that have come together for the season, headed by Adolfo Cambiaso, Gonzalo and Facundo Pieres, Juan Martín Nero and David Stirling Jr. (five of the only seven players in the world with a ten-goal handicap), only serve to bestow further glamour on a tournament that dazzles no matter which way you look at it.

Ellerston, Valiente, Lechuza Caracas, Ayala Polo Team, Las Monjitas, RH, Dos Lunas Espirito Santo, King Power, La Indiana, Murus Sanctus, HB Polo and Halcyon Gallery are the twelve teams participating in the High-Goal handicap group, a record number for Santa María Polo Club.

Valiente, the team of American patron Bob Jornayvaz and world number one Adolfo Cambiaso, has come to Sotogrande for the first time this season and has already inscribed its name in the list of champions.

It did so upon lifting the Isolas Bronze Cup, after beating Ayala Polo Team in the final 11 to 7.

The American organisation thus took the first win in a season that has proved very competi-

tive and, as this edition goes to print, still has two trophies up for grabs: the Silex Silver Cup and the Bulgari Gold Cup. Ellerston, Silver and Gold Cup champion in 2013, has a tough job ahead to defend its titles from well-prepared teams whose organisations have arrived at Sotogrande with a full “arsenal” of horses.

By the time this article comes out, the Silver and Gold cups will no doubt have been decided. But the most important thing, besides the deserving champions, is that the 43rd Land Rover International Polo Tournament will go down in the rich history of Santa María Polo Club as the season of international polo stars, great organisations and spectacular “duels” fought on the Los Pinos fields. m

De la mano de Grupo HCP aterrizó por segundo año consecutivo la iniciativa Destino Punta del Este. Un proyecto conjunto que enlaza dos de los mejores destinos turísticos residenciales del mundo (el español y el uruguayo).

Una completa y atractiva agenda se llevó a cabo entre el 8 y el 10 de agosto, trazando estrategias y planes entre los destinos con el denominador común del lujo y la excelencia.

En el Santa María Polo Club, el partido entre King Power y Haclyon Gallery puso en juego la II Copa Destino Punta del Este durante la celebración del 43º Torneo Internacional Land Rover de Polo. King Power fue el campeón de la edición 2014 tomando el relevo de Ellerston, ganador de la primera edición.

También se disputó, en Almenara Golf, el II Torneo de Golf Destino Punta del Este y su posterior entrega de premios con cóctel en el Cortijo Los Canos celebrando así el Encuentro empresarial con los viajeros y personalidades del sector negocios de la zona.

Led by HCP Group, the private initiative “Destino Punta del Este” landed for the second consecutive year in Sotogrande. A project linking two of the best residential destinations in the world (Spanish and Uruguayan).

An attractive agenda took place between the 8th and 10th of August, devise strategies and plans between destinations with the common denominator of luxury and excellence.

At the Santa Maria Polo Club, King Power and Haclyon Gallery played for the II Destino Punta del Este Trophy during the celebration of the 43rd Land Rover International Polo Tournament. King Power is the 2014 champion, taking over the trophy from Ellertson, winner of the first edition.

Also, at Almenara Golf, the II Golf Tournament Destino Punta del Este was held with a great cocktail and business meeting at Cortijo Los Canos.

Por primera vez en la historia, y tras más de 40 años de competición, Sotogrande se da el lujo de tener a cinco de los mejores jugadores del mundo disputando su Torneo Internacional Land Rover de Polo.

Adolfo Cambiaso, Gonzalo y Facundo Pieres, Juan Martín Nero y David Stirling (h), están presentes en la temporada de verano que organiza Santa María Polo Club, todo un lujo para una de las citas más importantes del calendario mundial de polo.

Estos cinco jugadores, todos con 10 goles de handicap, la máxima valorización que existe en polo, son las grandes estrellas del polo mundial, ganadores por excelencia y sinónimo de éxito en cada camiseta que defienden.

El número 1 del mundo, Adolfo Cambiaso, que defiende los colores de Valiente, el equipo de patrón estadounidense Bob Jornayvaz que debuta en Sotogrande, lleva una temporada 2014 de ensueño.

Cerró el 2013 ganando el Abierto Argentino de Polo con su equipo La Dolfina, el torneo más importante del mundo y comenzó el año ganando en Estados Unidos, dos de los tres torneos de la Triple Corona americana, la CV Whitney Cup y la USPA Gold Cup, ambos con Valiente.

Luego llego el turno de Inglaterra donde ganó la Gold

Cup en Cowdray, con Dubai.

Aterrizó en Sotogande y ya levantó el primer trofeo de la temporada, la Copa de Bronce Isolas con Valiente y va por más.

Lo tendrá muy difícil ya que Ellerston, vigente campeón de la Copa de Oro, cuenta un año más con los hermanos Gonzalo y Facundo Pieres dispuestos a defender la corona y a seguir aumentando su palmarés en Santa María Polo Club.

Facundo levantó con Zacara la Queens Cup en UK y su hermano Gonzalo disputó la final de la Gold Cup en Cowdray Park Polo.

Pero en esta galaxia de estrellas, Juan Martín Nero regresa con Lechuza Caracas del patrón Víctor Vargas con ganas de repetir el título que alcanzaron en la edición 2012.

For the first time in the 40-year history of the competition, Sotogrande has the luxury of watching five of the world’s best players participate in the Land Rover International Polo Tournament.

Adolfo Cambiaso, Gonzalo and Facundo Pieres, Juan Martín Nero and David Stirling (Jr.), are here for the summer season organised by Santa María Polo Club, a real coup for one of the most important events on the world polo calendar.

Each of these five players has a 10-goal handicap, the highest level attainable, making them the stars of world polo, winners by definition, who bring success to each of the teams they play on.

World number one Adolfo Cambiaso plays for Valiente, the team of American patron Bob Jornayvaz, who have been having an excellent season this year and are set to make their debut at Sotogrande.

Cambiaso finished 2013 winning the Argentine Polo Open, the most important tournament in the world, with his team La Dolfina and began 2014 winning two of the three tournaments of the American Triple Crown, the CV Whitney Cup and the USPA Gold Cup, with Valiente.

He then travelled to England, where he won the Gold Cup

in Cowdray with Dubai.

After arriving in Sotogande he lifted the first trophy of the season, the Isolas Bronze Cup with Valiente and he’s out to win more.

He’s not going to find it easy though, as reigning Gold Cup champion Ellerston once again has brothers Gonzalo and Facundo Pieres on side and they plan to defend the crown and add to their wins at the Santa María Polo Club.

Facundo won the Queen’s Cup in the UK with Zacara and his brother Gonzalo played the Gold Cup final at Cowdray Park Polo.

But there are more still more stars to contend with. This year Juan Martín Nero returns with Lechuza, from patron Víctor Vargas, who are keen to stage a repeat of their tournament win here in 2012.

“Local” team Ayala Polo Team, who won the title in 2007, have bet on the return of their “prodigal son” David “Pelón” Stirling to win what is one of the few trophies the Uruguayan player. m

En 2010 y 2013 conquista la Copa de Oro en Sotogrande. En 2010 logra también la Triple Corona Argentina con Ellerstina. En 2012 ganó todos los trofeos importantes de Estados Unidos e Inglaterra.

En 2011 pasa del equipo de Ellerstina (de los hermanos Pieres) a La Dolfina, con Adolfo Cambiaso. Ese mismo año gana la Triple Corona y el US Open. Recibe el Premio Olimpia de Plata en el mejor año de su carrera.

En 2006 y 2012 gana la Copa de Oro de Sotogrande con Loro Piana y Lechuza Caracas, respectivamente.

En 2013 conquista la Triple Corona Argentina.

Sus inicios en el polo se encuentran en Sotogrande cuando su padre, David, era el Director General de Santa María Polo Club. Más tarde se trasladará a Inglaterra, donde crecerá como jugador bajo la tutela de Adolfo Cambiaso.

En 2006 logra el US Open y la Gold Cup. En 2007 se proclama vencedor de la Queen´s Cup. Inglaterra.

En 2009 debuta en la Triple Corona, que conquistará en 2013, con La Dolfina.

En 2011 y 2013 logra el Abierto de Argentina con La Dolfina.

He is the only 10-goal player that isn’t Argentine. He started out as a player in Sotogrande, where his father David was the General Manager at the Santa María Polo Club. He later moved to England and trained as a player under the guidance of Adolfo Cambiaso.

In 2006 he won the US Open and the Gold Cup. In 2007 he lifted the Queen’s Cup in England.

Bob Jornayvaz, patrón de Valiente Polo Team visita Sotogrande por primera vez. Con la superestrella Adolfo Cambiaso en su equipo, esta temporada ya ha ganado la Copa de Bronce. La Bocha Polo Magazine tuvo la oportunidad de entrevistar a Jornayvaz durante el Torneo Internacional de Polo.

¿Qué le ha traído a Sotogrande? ¡Adolfito! Me lo lleva diciendo años y cuando tuve la oportunidad de jugar con él, cambié de idea y no sabría decir si hubiera venido de no ser por él. Pero claro, con él es distinto, resulta mágico.

Así que cuando me invitó y me dijo que podía hacer que ocurriera, empezamos a trabajar en ello. Siempre había querido venir a Sotogrande, pero la diferencia radica en que Adolfito lo ha hecho posible.

Había oído hablar de Sotogrande antes por Camilo (Bautista) y Víctor (Vargas), todo el mundo habla muy bien de este lugar, así que quería venir. Como soy muy competitivo no quería venir por placer. Siempre que voy a algún sitio, con el equipo y los caballos, quiero competir, así que con Adolfito, su organización y la mía queremos ser competitivos allá donde vayamos y eso lo hizo posible.

Con lo que sabía y lo que ha visto, ¿cuál es su impresión de Sotogrande y de Santa María Polo Club?

Mucho mejor. Resulta difícil describir las canchas, son geniales. Iguales que las de Wellington en marzo y abril.

Y la hospitalidad, nos alojamos en el Ayala Polo Club, un lugar magnífico, la gente es estupenda y estamos disfrutando mucho la estancia.

Ha comenzado el torneo ganando la Copa de Bronce, ¿un buen inicio para una competición muy dura?

Cuando hay una competición tan dura como la de Sotogrande, similar a la de Florida, hay que gestionar los caballos, por lo que hemos traído muchos. Es lo mismo en todas partes, hay que gestionar los caballos para llegar hasta el final. Por suerte hemos tenido un buen comienzo, con suficientes caballos para empezar y los que aún no hemos usado.

Esperamos tener bastantes para llegar hasta el final. ¿Valiente ha venido a Sotogrande con toda la organización?

Hemos dejado atrás muchos caballos, los caballos que juegan los torneos de 26 goles se han quedado en Estados Unidos, estos son caballos de 20 goles. También he traído de Argentina algunos caballos con los que jugué el año pasado. Tenemos la suerte de jugar en muchos sitios, así que comenzamos a mover los caballos con tiempo para hacerlo.

Terminamos en Argentina en diciembre, los caballos tuvieron un buen descanso por lo que los hemos traído pronto a Europa.

Dubai, la organización de Ali Albwardy, ha sido muy generosa al permitirnos dejar los caballos en Inglaterra, eso ha sido muy especial. Ali Albwardy ha sido tremendamente generoso.

el momento, estos se encuentren en el lugar adecuado. ¿Cuál será la próxima temporada de polo en la que jugará Valiente?

Cuando acabemos en Sotogrande, volveremos dos meses a Estados Unidos. Allí jugaremos algunos torneos y luego iremos a Argentina a finales de octubre para jugar y montar varios caballos que llegarán allí. Intentaremos elegir algunos para que vuelen a Estados Unidos.

Los caballos con los que jugaremos en Florida ya están allí. Estos van a ser para los torneos de 16 goles, porque cuanto más previsor se sea, mejor. Eso es lo que Adolfito nos ha enseñado, siempre estamos gestionando con dos o tres años de antelación, pensando a muy largo plazo. ¿Cuáles son los siguientes pasos para Bob Jornayvaz como jugador de polo y para Valiente Polo Team?

Mi objetivo obviamente es ganar el US Open.

La temporada pasada llegamos a la final y

perdimos por un resultado muy ajustado.

Uno de mis objetivos es jugar la Copa de Oro en todos los torneos del mundo. Por suerte, hemos ganado la Copa de Oro de EE.UU en tres ocasiones, hemos logrado la Copa de Oro de Argentina y ahora estamos aquí en Sotogrande jugando también la Copa de Oro. ¿La temporada de polo de Reino Unido entra en sus planes?

Por supuesto. Jugar allí es otro objetivo. Quiero jugar en todos los grandes torneos, y la Copa de Oro del Reino Unido es uno de ellos.

En polo hay que tener objetivos, ahí está la diversión. El US Open aún está en nuestro punto de mira y nos encantaría ganarlo.

Describa cómo es jugar con Adolfo Cambiaso.

Es mágico. Es bueno, considerado, divertido.

Nos reímos mucho en el campo.

Saca lo mejor de todo el mundo, es único.

También es un caballero, un hombre de palabra. Se responsabiliza de todo, si dice que va a hacer algo, se puede considerar hecho. Es una persona irrepetible y fabulosa.

¿Qué le hizo subir a un caballo?

Comencé a montar cuando era joven pero lo dejé durante años cuando tuve hijos. Cuando mi hijo empezó a montar hace unos 10 años, lo retomé. Entonces decidimos jugar al polo y, si queríamos hacerlo bien, tenía que ser en alto hándicap, donde todo va por pasos, es una progresión. Nuestro negocio funciona igual, muchas veces te metes en algo pequeño y después empiezas a construir y construir, que es lo divertido. ¿Es consciente de que Valiente está haciendo historia en el polo al dar grandes pasos en los últimos años como una gran organización?

La clave es la gente. Robertito Zeda, nuestro manager, ha marcado una gran diferencia. Si volvemos la vista atrás, Santiago Vitara fue el que lo puso en marcha, Vicente mi petisero y todos los petiseros, Pablo Spinacci, Adolfo, Facha (Martín Valent), Santi Torres, todo el mundo tiene los mismos objetivos y avanza en la misma dirección. Esa es la organización, su gente. A todos nos gusta estar en compañía de los otros, son gente maravillosa. m

Bob Jornayvaz “IN POLO, as in any business, the FAR AHEAD YOU CAN THINK and plan, THE BETTER” Valiente Polo Team patron, Bob Jornayvaz, visits Sotogrande for the first time. With superstar Adolfo Cambiaso in his team he already won the Bronze Cup in this season. La Bocha Polo Magazine had a nice interview with Jornayvaz during the International Polo Tournament.

What brought you to Sotogrande?

Adolfito! He told me about it for years and when I had the opportunity to play with him I change my mind and I don´t know if I would have come originally without him. But for sure with him is different, it´s magical.

So when he invited me and said we could make it happen, we started working on it. I always wanted to come to Sotogrande but the difference was that Adolfito made it possible.

I heard about Sotogrande before from Camilo (Bautista) and Victor (Vargas), everyone speaks so highly about Sotogrande, so I wanted to do it. But I´m really competitive so I didn´t wanted to do it for fun, when ever we go somewhere, when you move the team, the horses, you want to be competitive so with Adolfito and his organization and my organization we want to

be competitive everywhere we go, and that´s what make it possible.

From what you knew and what you now see, what´s your impression about Sotogrande and Santa María Polo Team?

Much better. The fields are hard to describe, so good! Just like the fields in Wellington in march and april.

The hospitality, we are staying at Ayala Polo Club, a magnificent place, the people are great, we are very much enjoying our stay.

You started the tournament winning the Bronze Cup, a good debut in a very hard competition?

When you have such a hard competition like this one in Sotogrande, It´s just like in Florida, you have to manage horses and we brought

a lot of horses. It´s horse management, the same everywhere, you have to manage to get till the end. So fortunatelly we had a good start, with enough horses to start with and more we haddn´t used yet so hopefully we have enough to get to the end.

Valiente came to Sotogrande with all the organization?

We left behind lot´s of horses, the 26 goals competition horses stayed in the United States, so this are 20 goals horses. I also brought some horses from Argentina that I played last year. We are lucky to play in many places so you begin to move horses around and you have the time to do it. We finish in Argentina in December, they had a good rest so they came early to Europe.

Dubai, Ali Albwardy organization, has been very generous to allow us to keep horses in England so that part has been very special. Ali Albwardy has been remarkable generous.

The ability to keep horses in many places gives you the possibility that, when the time comes, the horses are on the right place.

Which will be the next polo season that Valiente will play in?

After we finish in Sotogrande we will go back to United States for two months, we will play polo there and then we will go to Argentina in the end of october to play and ride some horses that are coming up there, trying to choose some horses that can fly to the United States.

The horses that we play in Florida are already there.

This are going to be for the 16 goals, because the far ahead you can think and plan, the better. That´s what Adolfito has taught us, we are always managing two or three years away, thinking in a very long term.

Which are the next steps for Bob Jornayvaz as a polo player and Valiente polo team?

My goals are obvioulsly to win the US Open. We reached the final last season and lost by a very close score.

One of my goals is to play in all the Gold Cup´s tournaments around the world. Fortunatelly we won the US Gold Cup three times, the Argentine Gold Cup and know we are here in Sotogrande playing the Gold Cup also.

The UK polo season is on your plans?

Absolutely. It´s just a goal to get to play there. I want to play in all the big Gold Cup´s tournaments and UK is one of them.

In polo you have to have goals, that´s the fun in polo.

The US Open is still on target and we will love to win it.

Describe playing with Adolfo Cambiaso?

Magical! He is so good, so thoughtfull, he´s fun, we laugh a lot on the field, he´s brilliant, he gets the best about everybody, he´s just so unique.

He´s a gentleman, a man of his word, he takes responsability for everything, if he says he´s going to do something then you can consider it done. Just a very unique and magical individual.

What put you on top of the horse?

I started riding since I was very young but I quit for many years when I had kids. When my son started riding, about 10 years ago, I started riding again.

Then we decided to play polo, and if we gonna make it, it will be in the high goal, everything is a step, a progression. Our business is all in the same way, a lot of times you get into something small and then you build and build, and the building is the fun part.

Valiente is building a great story in polo, making in big steps in the last years as a great organization, do you realize that?

I´ts the people. Robertito Zeda, our manager, has made a huge difference. If we go back, Santiago Vitara made the things started, Vicente my groom, all the grooms, Pablo Spinacci, Adolfo, Facha (Martín Valent), Santi Torres, it´s all that people pulling on the same direction, and they all have common goals.

So that´s the organization, it´s the people. We all enjoy being around each other, they are wonderfull people.m

icieron falta dos chukkers para que la final del British Open Polo Championship entre King Power de AiyawattSrivaddhanaprabha y Dubai se convirtiera en un emocionante partido de polo de alto handicap con el soberbio juego de dos jugadores de 10 goles, Adolfo Cambiaso que jugaba para Dubai, y Gonzalito Pieres, el número 3 de King Power.

La elección por parte de Rashid Albwardy de Alastair Paterson (3 goles) como número 2 y el brillante Diego Cavanagh (7 goles) como número 3, resultó ser una fuerza casi imparable a lo largo del campeonato. Pero la gran sorpresa del torneo fue que King Power llegara a la final la primera vez que se inscribía en la Gold Cup. Durante las cuatro semanas de partidos, ‘Top’ Srivaddhanaprabha, el habilidoso patrón de King Power, ha hecho las delicias del público con su vigoroso juego y su excelente récord de goles marcados. Con Pablo Llorente (5 goles) como número 2 y el experimentado Marcos Di Paola (7 goles) en la parte posterior, el equipo había logrado ganar todos los partidos hasta llegar a la final.

Dubai logró marcar en primer lugar con un certero gol de campo de Rashid Albwardy.

Cuando Cambiaso incurrió en una falta sobre Pieres hacia el término del primer chukker, un penalti permitió a King Power igualar la situación. El desordenado segundo chukker, durante el que todos los goles fueron de penalti, terminó en 4-3 a favor de Dubai. En el tercer chukker, que resultó más fluido, Pieres detuvo un fuerte pase adelante de Cambiaso para pasar la bocha a Llorente, que salió a

la carrera realizando un tiro tremendo desde muy atrás en el campo que culminó en un gol soberbio. Una vez más, King Power igualaba el resultado. Dubai se apuntó dos goles antes de que Pieres cerrara a Cambiaso, lo que permitió que Di Paola marcara un fabuloso gol para alcanzar el 5-5. No pasó mucho tiempo antes de que los camisas blancas regalaran un penalti que puso a Dubai de nuevo por delante con un tiro de Cavanagh. Era obvio que Cambiaso quería llegar al descanso con una clara ventaja y, como si se tratara de un gato tras un ratón, persiguió la bocha, la jugó frente a los rivales y salió disparado a por el gol para lograr el 7-5.

Tras la toma de contacto, los equipos volvieron al campo para un enfrentamiento del que Dubai resultó ganador. Un potente tiro a gol de Cambiaso no logró su objetivo y aunque encontró de nuevo el hueco para aproximarse a los palos, el tiro también erró. Por último, sus incansables esfuerzos dieron frutos con un segundo gol de campo durante el partido.

Durante un buen ataque de King Power, Di Paola no logró marcar el gol que buscaba, pero Llorente estuvo atento para hacerse con la bocha y pasársela a Pieres que se abrió camino entre los rivales hasta marcar gol. Poco después, una falta dio a Diego Cavanagh la oportunidad de meter entre los postes un tiro de 30 yardas que puso a Dubai muy por delante con 9-6 durante el cuarto chukker.

El emocionante quinto chukker fue para King Power aunque el primer gol correspondiera a Cavanagh, con un acertado tiro de Dubai. Un penalti dio a Gonzalito la oportunidad de un

tiro alto que supuso el 7-10, seguido de tres fabulosos goles de campo logrados a pesar de la tremenda presión de los jugadores de Dubai.

Esto volvió a igualar el marcador en 10-10, pero con un penalti para Dubai Cavanagh marcó y puso a su equipo por delante una vez más cerca del final del chukker.

Cambiaso se encontraba alejado durante el primer saque del sexto chukker y tuvo que abrirse camino adelante. Un espléndido tiro bajo el cuello puso a Dubai por delante con 12-10. Tras retomar la acción, sufrió una falta que acabó en un penalti de 60 yardas. Un potente tiro de Cavanagh concedió el 13-10 a Dubai. En el siguiente saque, Pablo Llorente se alejó con la bocha con la determinación de conservarla a pesar del jugador de 7 goles y el de 10 goles que se interpusieron en su camino.

Abriéndose paso entorno a ellos, mantuvo el control de la bocha y logró el 11-13 con un enorme aplauso. King Power siguió luchando, con tres fantásticos intentos de Gonzalito Pieres que no culminaron en gol. Un poderoso último tiro de Cambiaso no alcanzó su objetivo y el partido acabó con Dubai logrando su cuarta Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup por 13-11.

El premio al jugador más valioso fuer para Adolfo Cambiaso, la silla de máximo goleador del British Open Polo Championship fue para Gonzalito Pieres que logró 48 goles durante el torneo (Diego Cavanagh marcó 46) y el premio al mejor caballo jugador fue entregado por Gaston Lauhle en nombre de la Asociación Argentina de Criadores de Caballos de Polo a “Dolfina Primicia”, cuyo dueño y jinete era Adolfo Cambiaso. m

t took two chukkas before the Final of the British Open Polo Championship between Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha’s King Power side and Dubai became a fascinating game of high goal polo with superb play by the two 10 goalers, Adolfo Cambiaso playing at back for Dubai, and King Power’s number 3 Gonzalito Pieres.

Rashid Albwardy’s choice of Alastair Paterson, 3 goals, at number 2 and the brilliant goal scoring of 7 goal Diego Cavanagh at number 3, proved to be an almost unstoppable force throughout the Championship. But the big surprise of the tournament was to find King Power in the Final at their first entry of the Gold Cup. Throughout the four weeks of matchplay, King Power’s talented patron ‘Top’ Srivaddhanaprabha delighted spectators with his gutsy play and excellent record of goal scoring. With Pablo Llorente (5 goals) as his number 2 and the experienced Marcos Di Paola (7 goals) at Back, the team had won all their matches to take them through to the final.

Dubai were first to score with a neat field goal from Rashid Albwardy. When Cambiaso fouled Pieres towards the end of the first chukka, a penalty enabled King Power to draw level. In a messy second chukka every goal came from a penalty to end 4-3 in Dubai’s favour. A more free-flowing third chukka saw Pieres stop a strong forward pass

by Cambiaso and pass the ball to Llorente,

who raced off to send a massive hit from way down the field resulting in a superb goal. King Power were equal once again. Dubai notched up two goals before Pieres shut out Cambiaso allowing Di Paola to score a splendid goal to equalise again at 5-5. But it wasn’t long before the white shirts gave away a penalty which Cavanagh shot through to take the lead again for Dubai. Cambiaso clearly wanted to go into half time with a clear advantage and like a cat after a mouse pounced on the ball, played it around the opposition and then took off for the goal to send the ball between the posts for a lead of 7-5.

After the tread-in the teams came back onto the field to a throw in, won by Dubai. A mighty hit at goal by Cambiaso went wide, once again he found the space to approach the goal but that shot too failed. Finally his nonstop efforts paid with his second field goal of the match. A good piece of action from King Power saw Di Paola just fail to get the goal he wanted, but Llorente was on hand to capture the ball and pass it to Pieres who weaved his way through the opposition to score. Soon a foul gave Diego Cavanagh the chance to put through a 30 yard hit between the posts to take Dubai further into the lead on 9-6 to close the fourth chukka.

A thrilling chukka 5 belonged to King Power even though the first goal went to Cavanagh from a spot hit awarded to Dubai. A penalty 3 gave Gonzalito the chance to loft a superb

ball through for 7-10 and he followed up with three superb field goals despite tremendous pressure from the Dubai players, levelling the scores again at 10-10. But a penalty awarded to Dubai saw Cavanagh score and take Dubai ahead once more to close the chukka.

Cambiaso was away from the first throw-in of chukka six and tapped his way forward. A splendid under the neck shot took Dubai on to 12-10. Off he went again but was fouled and a 60 yard penalty awarded. A mighty hit from Cavanagh gave Dubai a lead of 13-10. The next throw-in saw Pablo Llorente away with the ball and determined to keep it - despite a 7 goaler and a 10 goaler in his way. Weaving his way round them he kept control of the ball and sent it through for 11-13 to huge applause. King Power carried on fighting, three fantastic attempts by GonzalitoPieres simply couldn’t find the goal. A final mighty shot from Cambiaso went wide and the match ended with Dubai securing their fourth Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup on 13-11.

The Most Valuable Player Award for went to Adolfo Cambiaso, the saddle to the Highest Goal Scorer of the British Open Polo Championship to Gonzalito Pieres who had scored 48 goals during the tournament (Diego Cavanagh scored 46) and the Best Playing Pony award was presented by Gaston Lauhle on behalf of the Argentine Polo Pony Breeders Association to ‘Dolfina Primicia, owned and ridden by Adolfo Cambiaso. m

Con un estupendo marco de público que llenó las tribunas del Guards Polo Club, el sábado 26/7 se disputó una nueva edición de The Coronation Cup, que en esta oportunidad enfrentó al local Inglaterra Audi frente a Argentina Equus & Co., con triunfo argentino por 13-8.

De esta manera, el equipo argentino ganó por quinta vez (en igual cantidad de participaciones) este importante test match y le cortó a Inglaterra una racha de cuatro triunfos consecutivos, ya que entre 2010 y 2013 venció a Nueva Zelanda (9-7, 2010), Brasil (8-6, 2011), Sudáfrica (9-8, 2012) y a Estados Unidos (12-11 en 2013, en el marco de la histórica Westchester Cup).

La última derrota de los locales fue justamente ante Argentina, 12-5 en 2009, en la que también fueron figuras del equipo nacional Adolfo Cambiaso (h) y Facundo Pieres.

En el inicio del encuentro, en el que Inglaterra recibió un gol de ventaja por su menor handicap, el local se dedicó a llevar a cabo la planificación que realizó su coach, el argentino Eduardo Heguy, y logró detener los embates argentinos y sacar un gol más de ventaja, merced a dos penales cortos (Facundo Pieres descontaba para Argentina).

En el descanso entre el primer y el segundo período, los integrantes del equipo argentino decidieron cambiar la forma de juego y comenzaron a agarrar las riendas del encuentro, sacando claras ventajas, convirtiendo seis goles consecutivos entre el segundo y el tercer período y cerrando la primera mitad con una ventaja de 8-4.

Fue el mejor momento de Argentina en el partido, con un Adolfo Cambiaso sensacional, jugando de back, ordenando y manejando al equipo, mientras que Facundo Pieres (elegido como la figura del test match) era imparable para los defensores locales. En ese marco también se destacaban Francisco Beláustegui (de gran actuación) y Julio Ruggeri, parándose como los dos delanteros del equipo nacional.

La segunda mitad fue más pareja, ya que Inglaterra pareció entrar convencido de achicar la ventaja, situación que lograba por momentos, pero el equipo argentino no sólo defendía muy bien el marcador sino que aprovechaba cualquier situación que encontrara para convertir. El final del cuarto chukker fue clave, ya que el equipo local había logrado ponerse a sólo dos tantos (6-8) merced a un gol de James Beim y un penal de Mark Tomlinson (el mejor jugador local en el encuentro) pero Facundo Pieres, con una gran escapada alargó la distancia y frenó la levantada inglesa.

Los chukkers 5 y 6 finalizaron con el marcador 2-1 para Argentina para cerrar el encuentro con triunfo para el equipo albiceleste por 13-8.

Tras ello llegó la muy aplaudida entrega de premios, con la participación de, entre otras importantes autoridades, el Príncipe Carlos de Gales y el presidente de la Asociación Argentina de Polo, Sr. Francisco E. Dorignac, quien viajó especialmente para el test match.m

Argentina, with Adolfo Cambiaso and Facundo Pieres in their team, beat England 13-8 winning the test match for the Coronation Cup for the fifth time in their history With an impressive crowd filling the stands at Guards Polo Club, the weekend of the 26th/27th saw the latest instalment of the Coronation Cup, which saw the home side, Audi England, take on Equus & Co. Argentina, resulting in an Argentinean 13-8 victory.

This means that the Argentinean team have now won the important test match five times (in as many appearances) ending England’s run of four wins on the trot, as from 2010 to 2013 they beat New Zealand (9-7, 2010), Brazil (8-6, 2011), South Africa (98, 2012) and the USA (12-11 in 2013, in the traditional Westchester Cup).

The home side’s last defeat came against Argentina, 12-5 in 2009, when Adolfo Cambiaso (Jr.) and Facundo Pieres also figured in their national team.

At the start of the match, in which England had a one goal advantage due to their lower handicap, the home set about carrying out the plan made by their coach, the Argentinian Eduardo Heguy, and managed to stifle the Argentinean attacks, adding another goal to their advantage thanks to two short penalties (Facundo Pieres converted for Argentina).

In the break between the first and second period, the members of the Argentinian team decided to change their style of play and began to take control of the match, taking a clear lead by converting consecutive goals between the second and third periods, ending the first half with an 8-4 lead.

It was Argentina’s best spell of the match and Adolfo Cambiaso was sensational, playing as a back and pulling the team’s strings, while Facundo Pieres (chosen as player of the test match) proved impossible for the home defence to stop. Francisco Beláustegui (who had a great game) and Julio Ruggeri also stood out in that respect

in their roles as the team’s forwards.

The second half was tighter, as England seemed to come out determined to cut the deficit, something they did at times, but the Argentineans not only defended their lead well, they also took any opportunity that came their way to score. The end of the fourth chukker was key as the home team had managed to get within two (6-8) thanks to a goal from James Beim and a penalty from Mark Tomlinson (the best home player in the match) but Facundo Pieres, with a great break, opened the gap again and put an end to the English team’s fight-back.

Chukkers 5 and 6 ended 2-1 to Argentina to finish the match 13-8 to the South American side.

The match was followed by the prize-giving ceremony, which, among other important figures, included the participation of the Prince of Wales and the president of the Asociación Argentina de Polo, Sr. Francisco E. Dorignac, who made the trip especially for the match. m

ituado entre Assilah y Larache, a pocos kilómetros de la ciudad de Tánger, se alza el Club de Polo PGH La Palmeraie. Una gran apuesta por retomar la tradición polistica que en Marruecos puesta en marcha por Patrick Guerrand-Hermès. Una tradición que nació en estas tierras en 1899, concretamente de Tánger. Allí, precisamente, se creó, en 1910 un club de campo diplomático por el que pasaban tanto españoles como ingleses que pagaban desde cuotas vitalicias de cien pesetas hasta costes de cinco pesetas por mes.

Un emblemático lugar al que le siguieron otros, como el de Casablanca, con los que se creó una gran afición por este deporte que, lamentablemente, se fue perdiendo con el paso del tiempo.

Es, por ello, que ahora nace este espectacular proyecto, fruto de la pasión de Hermés por este deporte, su afición al juego en Sotogrande y

Francia, y su gusto por los caballos.

Un fantástico lugar donde, además de las cachas de polo, está previsto contar con un maravilloso hotel de la cadena “Six Senses Hotel Resorts Spas” y una acogedora urbanización concebidos para hacer cualquier estancia única.

A todo ello, está contemplado sumar, además, una zona de ocho hectáreas para la práctica de golf. Un oasis dedicado al deporte y el descanso rodeados de un entorno virgen de playas y dunas.

Un espectacular espacio de cien hectáreas donde actualmente ya se alzan tres canchas de Tifton de la mejor calidad sembradas a mano por mujeres, preparadas incluso para soportar la salinidad por su proximidad al mar. Unas instalaciones que ya cuenta también con una pileta para recoger agua para los periodos de escasez, asi como todo lo necesario para el entrenamiento diario de

caballos y profesionales como pista de vareo, cancha para taquear, casa para petiseros y trabajadores varios.

Un club que nace de manos de un amante del polo y, por supuesto, de los caballos, ya que lo que primero creó Patrick en Marruecos es un fabuloso centro de cría y, así, buscando un lugar donde poder hacer, probar y jugar esos caballos, fue como surgió la idea del polo.

PGH La Palmeraie es, por todo, un club de polo que se pone en marcha en un lugar ídilico como destino familiar al que acudir para relajarse, lejos del bullicio de la civilización pero con todas las comodidades propias del siglo XXI. CENTRO DE INSEMINACIÓN Y EMBRIONES En el centro de Inseminación y embriones, situado en Larache, no muy lejos del Club, es donde se hace la cría y la primera doma.

No solo se trabaja con los caballos de polo, sino que también se hacen caballos puros de carrera y pura sangre árabes.Entre

el Club de Polo La Palmeraie y el Centro de cría actualmente cuentan con unos 200 ejemplares. Para ellos disponen de cuatro magníficos padrillos, que proveen al centro para hacer las inseminaciones u embriones, según sea necesario.

INSEMINATION AND EMBRYO CENTRE The Insemination and Embryo Centre in Larache, not far from the Club, is where the horses are bred and first broken. The centre not only works with polo horses, but also thoroughbred racehorses and pure blood Arabian

horses. The La Palmeraie Polo Club and the breeding centre currently have 200 specimens. They have four magnificent stallions to provide the centre for the inseminations and embryos, as required.

etween Assilah and Larache, a few kilometres from the city of Tangier, sits the PGH La Palmeraie Polo Club. It is a wonderful spot to discover a tradition for polo in Morocco that was started by Patrick Hermes. The sport reached these latitudes in 1899, specifically in Tangier. It was there that a diplomatic country club was created in 1910 through which both Spaniards and Englishmen would pass, paying fees of one hundred pesetas for life membership or five pesetas per month.

It is an iconic site that was followed by others, such as the one in Casablanca, which created a great following of the sport that, unfortunately, was lost as time went by.

This is why this spectacular project was born. It is a fruit of the passion of Her-

més for the sport, his link to the game in Sotogrande and France, and his love of horses. It is a fantastic place where, as well as polo pitches, it is due to have a wonderful hotel belonging to the “Six Senses Hotel Resorts Spas” chain and a cosy estate designed to provide a unique stay. To all this, the idea is to add an eight-hectare area for playing golf.

It is an oasis dedicated to sport and relaxation surrounded by virgin beaches and dunes.

It is a spectacular one-hundred-hectare space where there are currently three top-quality Tifton pitches, hand sown by women, and even prepared to cope with the salinity due to its proximity to the sea. The facilities also have a pool for collecting water for periods of drought, as well as everything required for the daily training of horses and profes-

sionals such as an exercise ring, a stick and ball field and a club house for polo grooms and several workers.

It is a club that was born through the hands of a lover of polo and, of course, of horses, as the first thing that Patrick created in Morocco was the wonderful breeding centre and the idea of polo was the result of his search for a place to be able to test and play those horses.

PGH La Palmeraie is a polo club in an idyllic family setting and a place to relax, far from the hubbub of civilization, but with all the commodities of the twenty-first century. It is a luxury complex with a rustic and cosy style where tourism, exotic tasting food, incredible colours, endless beaches and of course polo and golf can all be enjoyed in unique surroundings.m

n medio de una temporada intensa, que lo tiene en una doble función, jugador y polo manager, Martín Iturraspe confesó que “esto de estar arriba y abajo del caballo es un lindo desafío, divertido. Hay mucho trabajo dentro y fuera de la cancha, pero la verdad que Dos Lunas está muy bien en esta temporada, tenemos una caballeriza nueva y cuatro equipos y medio del Alto y Mediano Handicap”.

Las organizaciones Lechuza Caracas, Monjitas, RH y Kevin Korst de La Esperanza, además del anfitrión, Dos Lunas, hacen que la capacidad del club esté colmada en esta temporada de polo en Sotogrande.

“Tener en nuestro club a organizaciones como Las Monjitas y Lechuza Caracas es un desafío y un honor para Dos Lunas y esperemos que cada año se sumen más organizaciones. Además, el contar con estos equipos nos permiten armar prácticas de alto handicap todos los días, con jugadores Juanma Nero, los hermanos Novillo Astrada, Nico Pieres, entre otros, un verdadero privilegio. Por suerte están contentos con Dos Lunas y escuchamos siempre su opinión para ir mejorando cada año”, agrega.

Presente y futuro “Las canchas están muy bien, estamos bien organizados y con un futuro cercano muy bueno ya que el año que viene contaremos con una cancha más y otros nuevos proyectos para

seguir ampliando el club.

Vemos que el polo en Sotogrande crece y se pone más competitivo y en Dos Lunas queremos seguir brindándole lo mejor a los equipos y organizaciones que vienen a competir”, explica Martín.

Afortunadamente para Dos Lunas sus instalaciones también reciben la visita de equipos y patrones durante el resto del año y esa sigue siendo la gran apuesta del club.

“El objetivo es que Dos Lunas funcione todo

el año. Con las canchas e infraestructura que tenemos, además del clima que tiene Sotogrande, todo está dado para que así sea. Sería un lujo poder ampliar y estirar la temporada y no sólo quedarnos con agosto”, agrega Iturraspe.

Todos los años se habla de fortalecer la temporada en Sotogrande, y aprovechar las bondades y facilidades que tiene un lugar como Sotogrande para que ello sea. Al respecto, el polo manager de Dos Lunas explicó que para ello “la clave es juntarnos con Santa María Polo

Club y Ayala Polo Club, proponer y armar algo.

Sabemos que cada país tiene su temporada pero como Sotogrande no hay ninguna y no existen las bondades que por suerte aquí tenemos.

Por eso estamos trabajando para armar una linda temporada en junio del año que viene y también sumar más torneos en Semana Santa y traer más equipos”.

Dos Lunas Espirito Santo Polo Team Esta temporada, Dos Lunas - Espirito Santo ha conformado un equipo muy competitivo para encarar el 43º Torneo Internacional Land Rover de Polo.

Pascual Sainz de Vicuña, Agustín García Grossi, Luis Domecq y el propio Martín Iturraspe integran el cuarteto que, como en todas las temporadas, hará de Dos Lunas un equipo duro de batir.

“Este año me tocó jugar, es un desafío por un lado y un placer por otro estar en la cancha con Pascual, Luis y el flaco García Grossi con los cuáles tenemos una excelente relación.

Es un año muy duro, cada temporada es el torneo más competitivo, pero es divertido y una gran exigencia para Dos Lunas Espirito Santo.

Vamos a ir partido a partido, buscando el mejor funcionamiento del equipo y tratar de hacer una buena temporada”, finaliza Iturraspe.m

n the middle of an intense season, which he is dealing with from two different positions, as a player and as polo manager, Martín Iturraspe confessed that “working both in and out of the saddle is a nice challenge, it’s good fun. There’s a lot of work on and off the field but Dos Lunas is doing well this season.

We have a new stable and four and a half teams at High and Medium Handicap this season.”

The organisations Lechuza Caracas, Monjitas, RH and Kevin Korst from La Esperanza, as well as the host, Dos Lunas, have the club at full capacity this polo season in Sotogrande.

“The presence of organisations such as Las Monjitas and Lechuza Caracasa at our club is a challenge and an honour for Dos Lunas and we hope that each year more organisations join us. In addition, having these organisations allows us to set up high handicap practices every day with players like Juanma Nero, the Novillo Astrada brothers, Nico Pieres and more. It’s a real privilege. Luckily, they’re happy with Dos Lunas and we always get their opinion in order to improve each year,” he added.

organised and we have a very positive near future because we’ll have one more field next year and there are other projects to continue extending the club.

We see that polo is growing in Sotogrande and becoming more competitive and at Dos Lunas we want to continue to provide the best for teams and organisations that come to compete,” Martín explained.

Fortunately for Dos Lunas, the facilities are also used by teams and patrons over the rest of the year and that continues to be the club’s greatest focus.

“The objective is for Dos Lunas to function all year round. With the fields and infrastructure that we have, as well as the climate here in Sotogrande, all the cards are in our favour.

It would be fantastic to be able to extend and stretch out the season and not only have August,” Iturraspe added.

Every year there is talk of strengthening the season at Sotogrande and taking advantage of the favourable conditions and installations of a place like Sotogrande to do so. The polo manager at Dos Lunas explained that for this to happen “the key is to join with Santa María Polo Club and Ayala Polo Club to form a proposal and set something up. We know that every country has its season, but there’s

nowhere like Sotogrande, with the favourable conditions that we’re fortunate to have.

That’s why we’re working to put together a nice season in June next year as well as adding more tournaments at Easter and bringing in more teams.”

Dos Lunas Espirito Santo Polo Team This season Dos Lunas Espirito Santo has formed a very competitive team to enter the 43rd Land Rover International Polo Tournament.

En la calma de las caballerizas de Ayala Polo Club, donde se respira polo por los cuatro costados, Juan Ignacio “Pite” Merlos, recibe a La Bocha Polo Magazine para una entrevista en la cual habla de todo: el polo de antes, el de ahora, organizaciones, jugadores, caballos y su futuro.

Tratar de enseñar a organizarse, los detalles, de ser un jugador de elite, la seguridad dentro y fuera de la cancha.

“Contento de estar en Sotogrande otra vez. El otro día hacía las cuentas de cuando había sido la primera vez que había venido, fue en 1987 y la verdad que ha cambiado tanto...”, dice Pite Merlos en el inicio de una charla que transcurre con mate y facturas de por medio.

“Por suerte Sotogrande ha logrado tener lo que le faltaba, buenas caballerizas y buenos lugares para jugar prácticas y está muy bueno que lo hayan logrado. En 1987 jugaba en Paniagua, en el Río, eran cuatro canchas creo, se jugaba a 16 goles, era divertido. En ese momento vine con un equipo nuevo de unos franceses”,recuerda.

La coincidencia o casualidad indica que Merlos vino por primera vez a Sotogrande con un equipo francés y que en estos últimos dos años regreso también con un equipo francés, HB de los hermanos Pailloncy.

Has jugado con tu padre, tus hermanos y ahora con tu hijo, un privilegio que pocos pueden darse, ¿sos consciente de ello?

Lo he pensado varias veces, el polo me ha dado la posibilidad de compartir tantas cosas y además que la familia me acompañe en ellas, la verdad que es un regalo de Dios. Lo más importante, y lo dijo mi padre y nunca me lo había puesto a pensar hasta ahora, es que el polo le dio, y me dio, la posibilidad de tener a la familia unida. Que todos disfruten la misma pasión.

Hasta las hijas mujeres, mías y de mis hermanos, son fanáticas del polo, de la cría, la equitación, y no se pierden ningún evento que tenga relación con el caballo. Por eso al polo, gracias.

Hoy a la familia Merlos nos une más la pasión por el caballo que el polo en sí. El polo es como todo, en su justo equilibrio es muy lindo, pero a veces algún dolor o sin sabor hay que vivir, como todo trabajo y deporte. Pero el amor y la admiración es lo que, siendo jóven o grande, nos tiene a todos apostando porque sea un día especial.

ite regresa a Sotogrande por segundo año consecutivo para disputar el Torneo Internacional de Polo defendiendo a HB Polo, la organización de los hermanos Ludovic y Sebastien Pailloncy.

¿Cómo se siente Pite Merlos?

Me siento muy bien, mejor que nunca. Mejor jugador y físicamente muy bien. Es una etapa que estoy disfrutando mucho.

Soy como los Chalchaleros, me he retirado varias veces y sigo volviendo. Hay varios que me dicen que vaya dejando lugar (risas) pero me siento muy bien.

Además me tengo que mantener en forma para jugar algún torneo importante con mi hijo Juan Cruz que viene pisando fuerte. Es volver a vivir todos los pasos que uno vivió, y si bien es la vida de él, es muy divertido poder compartir con él este deporte que tanto me ha dado.

También has jugado con muchas generaciones de polistas..

Charlaba el otro día con un amigo y me preguntaba como hacía para seguir jugando competitivamente hasta ahora, con un polo que ha cambiado tanto.

Creo que pasa por la capacidad que uno tiene de adaptarse a la evolución del juego. Empecé jugando con un taco de cigarro chico, con las canchas de gramilla y ahora todo es muy diferente. Lo más importante es poder adaptarse a todo eso.

Jugué mi primera práctica de alto handicap con Juan Carlos Harriot y la anécdota de esa primera práctica es que me ponía a 60 yardas y los backhanders de Juan Carlitos me arrancaban la cabeza y él me decía “Hijo, hijo cuando pegue backhander da vuelta”, y yo me le ponía 10 yardas más para atrás pero me seguían pasando los golpes. Hoy en día los jugadores buenos no pegan tanto backhander sino que tienen más posesión de pelota, entonces uno aprendió a que tiene que adaptarse a los momentos del juego.

También he jugado contra Juan Carlos y Alfredo Harriot, Gonzalo Tanoira, Gonzalo y Alfonso Pieres, Ernesto Trotz, los Heguy, Adolfito Cambiaso, Facundo y Gonzalo Pieres, la verdad que es un privilegio que no todos han podido tener.

Si tienes que elegir a uno ¿con cual te quedás?

Nombrar o destacar a uno es difícil pero el polo, como todos los deportes, es un poco injusto porque hubo, y hay, jugadores muy buenos que no han podido ganar muchos títulos o no han tenido la prensa que otros sí tienen. También jugadores muy buenos que nunca se han apartado de jugar con su grupo íntimo, ya sea hermanos o amigos,que han rechazado jugar en equipos grandes por conservar la amistad, por ejemplo Gonzalo Tanoira.

Considero jugadores muy buenos, que alguna vez admiré y traté de imitar, a Gonzalo Tanoira y también me gustaba mucho Celestino Garrós.

Tuve la suerte de jugar en todas las posiciones, sobre todo en el Abierto Argentino, entonces cada vez que me movía de posición, de 1, 2, 3 o back, iba viendo videos y estudiando jugadores que en su posición me deslumbraban.

Por ejemplo, Marcos Heguy de 1 a mí me volvía loco como jugaba, Adolfito (Cambiaso) jugando de 1 en sus inicios y en este tiempo de ahora también lo miro mucho. Alfredo Harriot de back me encantaba, mi hermano Agustín de delantero es impresionante. Hay jugadores que tienen muchas virtudes pero con más o menos suerte para ganar o más o menos prensa. La verdad que no puedo sacar uno que sea distinto a otro, o mejor que otro, porque las épocas te marcan distintas necesidades. ¿El polo de antes o el de ahora?

Me es más fácil jugar el polo de ahora que el de antes. Creo que uno está mucho más montado ahora, que las reglas preservan más la seguridad del jugador pese a que se juega con más velocidad, además de la mejoría en las canchas y los caballos. Antes valía todo y la verdad que era muy divertido.

Vemos con la familia muchos videos de finales de mi padre, nuestras y actuales, y nos reímos muchísimo. Hay partidos que jugaba mi padre que se caían hasta cinco veces en un mismo partido, valía todo, las yeguas jugaban siete minutos, no se cambiaban, había tres fouls por chukker. Y eso en canchas de gramilla y con tacos con cigarros pequeños, y no le erraban a la bocha.

Eran muchas granjas distintas. Imaginarse tiempo atrás a un Heguy jugando con un Merlos o que un Novillo jugase con un Pieres era casi imposible. Eran los Novillo, los Heguy, los Pieres, Cambiaso, cada uno por su lado.

Hoy el negocio permite, o los obliga, a mezclarse lo cual no está tan bueno para los fanáticos del polo pero comercialmente alguno sacará su ventaja.

Personalmente, y desde el punto de vista del jugador, creo que el respeto y la ética entre los jugadores ha cambiado, ha mejorado mucho,

hoy es un deporte, salvo casos muy raros, que está mucho más seguro.

Ahora desde el punto de vista del hincha del polo, no me gusta, siempre preferí la rivalidad, los clásicos entre Chapa I y Chapa II, por ejemplo. Hoy ya no existen.

En la evolución del polo, la de los caballos..

El caballo ya es un atleta perfecto. En la posibilidad de entender el caballo un poco más, la doma racional, la suplementación en la cría, un montón de cosas que han hecho del caballo un atleta perfecto y ese es un punto favorable.

El sistema de embriones permitió que las yeguas buenas, antes de exportarse, dejaran esas crías. Pero tuvimos un vacío importante en los años 80 y 90 en el cual las yeguas buenas se iban y por eso nos alcanzó Sudáfrica y Australia, países con los cuáles todavía hoy compartimos la punta de caballos buenos.

Antes como jugador profesional yo iba a comprar caballos a Argentina, ahora los vendo.

Ellerstina o los Pieres iban y compraban caballos en Argentina, ahora los venden. Entonces todos los que estábamos de este lado y salíamos afuera a jugar luego veníamos a comprar caballos a Argentina y los que estaban en cría tradicionales se veían beneficiados.

Hoy crían los seis o siete tipos que económicamente pueden afrontarlo. El criador artesanal desapareció y eso creo que es un punto negativo, es algo que la Asociación de Criadores de Caballos de Polo Argentino no ha podido lograr. Le siguen dando bola al que más gasta y no al que menos puede. ¿Cómo es la organización de Pite Merlos?

Generalmente tengo a 8 o 10 petiseros con los cuáles me muevo todo el año, algunos viajan conmigo, otros con Juan Cruz mi hijo. Hay tres domadores, uno fijo en el campo, otros dos flotantes. Se hacen 40 embriones por año, otras 20 manadas de cría por año. Es grande.

Tenemos nuestra base en Tranque Lauquen y nuestra vidriera en La Mariana, que es un club

compartido con mis hermanos, donde hay tres canchas de Polo, con una gran cantidad de boxes y que aún se sigue agrandando.

Es un trabajo movidito, interesante, costoso y demandante pero la satisfacción, después de 20 años como criador, es muy grande. Hemos logrado un tipo de caballo que es lo que a mi me llevo a ser lo que soy. Siempre me gustó el caballo prolijo, pegado al piso, que no me lleve mucho, que reduzca. Ese tipo de caballo es lo que hemos podido transmitir a lo que estamos produciendo. Es un estilo de caballo que me dio resultado y en cual puedo imaginarme al piloto arriba, que no a todos les calza, lo más probable, pero es un tipo de caballo que a mí me gusta y estoy contentísimo con ello.

Organizaciones con las que has jugado..

En el presente con HB. Llevo dos temporadas con ellos y cuando me vinieron a ver fue un challenge bastante fuerte, había que meterle coraje porque toda la caballada era nueva, ellos debutaban en el Alto Handicap, no es común ver dos amateurs en un mismo equipo.

Conozco mucho a Cubi (Ignacio Toccalino) entonces decidí subirme al proyecto.

La verdad que los chicos hicieron algo muy bueno, que es darle tiempo a que Cubi se organizara y sacar de mí un poco los años de experiencia, para organizar un equipo desde adentro. Apostaron más al grupo humano que a los resultados.

Ahora los chicos comienzan una etapa distinta, con más handicap, con alguien de mayor proyección. Hacen las cosas más a largo plazo y eso está bueno. Este es mi último año con ellos y estoy muy agradecido por la oportunidad que me dieron.

He jugado con muchas organizaciones y todas me han enseñado algo. Black Bears, por ejemplo, me agarró con 21 años, me dió la posibilidad de organizar todo y ganamos tres Queens Cup y Gold Cup. Black Bears me enseñó mucho la parte humana, Lechuza Caracas

me ayudó mucho en la parte profesional: caballos, compañeros, equipos, gente; y también me dio todas las posibilidades de ganar. También Isla Carrol me aportó mucho. Pero lo más importante de todas ellas es lo que me dejaron desde el punto de vista humano y eso es lo que uno rescata. ¿Los destinos más exóticos en los cuáles has jugado?

María Pía, Trenque Lauquen, mi casa!

Teníamos un médano de 4 metros de altura y dije “acá vamos a hacer una cancha de polo”.

Me dijeron que estaba loco, que era imposible, la hicimos cuatro veces y estuvimos más de 10 años en ello. Finalmente tenemos dos canchas ahí!.

Después lugares increíbles donde he jugado, Sotogrande es uno, como posibilidad de hacer las cosas bien. Es realmente impresionante, un lugar con todas las facilidades, clima, canchas, un club como Ayala que te brinda todas las comodidades, poder jugar prácticas de alto handicap todos los días.

Lo que hizo Sotogrande, que no hizo el resto del mundo, es entender lo que un equipo de élite y un profesional de élite necesita. Están todas las facilidades, en Sotogrande el que gana es el mejor y el que mejor se organiza, no tenés ninguna excusa, porque hay todo.

Salvo en Pilar, Argentina, en ninguna otra parte del mundo existe algo así.

Me encantó también jugar en Santa Barbara, California. Inglaterra también me gusta mucho, sobre todo los años poca lluvia, entre muchos otros destinos que he tenido la posibilidad de jugar y de los cuáles sólo tengo buenos recuerdos. ¿Crees que Sotogrande puede estirar aún más la temporada alta de polo?

Lo que ha pasado en las últimas dos temporadas de Agosto en Sotogrande no pasó en ningún otro lugar. En agosto la meca del polo es Sotogrande y eso ya es un logro.

Te diría que hace cuatro años no había orga-

nizaciones que se comprometían de antemano a venir a jugar a Santa María Polo Club en Agosto, hoy si no avisas con tiempo te quedás afuera.

El resto del año lo más difícil es competir contra un calendario establecido. Es muy complicado que una organización de las fuertes deje de competir en Estados Unidos o Inglaterra por ir a Sotogrande.

Y es muy difícil competir contra ello. Sí creo que se puede adelantar o atrasar algunas semanas más y hacer un par de torneos más. Es muy dura la temporada de polo y los dueños de las organizaciones no tienen tanto tiempo como para pasarse tres meses jugando en Sotogrande.

Me pregunto, ¿Sotogrande tiene el mismo marco de gente en una final un 10 de septiembre que un 30 de Agosto? No lo sé, creo que no, y contra eso es muy difícil. Pero si creo que se pueden mover algunas semanas.

Es muy difícil comprometer a jugadores que están en el circuito internacional a dejar de competir en las sedes importantes para venir a jugar a un lugar que no forme parte de dicho circuito o fuera de su temporada habitual.

De todas formas, hoy Sotogrande no es lo mismo que hace tres años. Las organizaciones se comprometen con un año de antelación a volver y eso se logró por las buenas canchas, el buen clima y por las infraestructuras que antes no había. Por eso en Agosto, Sotogrande sí manda sobre el resto, sobre todo para los jugadores. Eso antes no pasaba. Antes venía el que se había quedado con ganas de jugar en Inglaterra ahora sino confirmás en marzo te podés quedar afuera.

Creo que Sotogrande se va a seguir imponiendo fuerte y para mí se pueden jugar 15 días más, antes o después. ¿El Abierto Argentino para Pite Merlos?

Marcó dos etapas diferentes en mis participaciones en el Abierto Argentino. Jugué 27 Abiertos, la mitad de las veces fue una aventura.

Con ocho o nueve goles, 23 años, no tenía un caballo de polo, pedía prestado, me organizaba, pero siempre tuve claro que para jugar bien en Palermo primero tenía que hacerlo en el exterior.

Ahora tengo la disponibilidad de los caballos que quiero, antes no. Y eso que agarré a mi padre retirándose del polo y heredé algunos caballos en los primeros años.

Primero competía para ser mejor, hasta que pude lograr resultados afuera, donde pude ganar el US Open, la Copa de Oro, la Copa de la Reina, Abierto de Australia, etc. Entonces me hice un nombre que me permitió comprar los caballos que quería y jugar con quien quería el Abierto de Palermo.

Son dos etapas bien definidas, los primeros 10 Abiertos y los segundos 15. En estos últimos que salí a competir la verdad que fue impresionante. Significa estar en lo más alto, lo mejor del mundo.

Llegué a seis finales, gané una, gané siete Abiertos de Hurlingham. Pude sentir lo que significa ganar un Abierto. Es verdad que perdí finales que teníamos ganadas, con La Dolfina, con La Mariana, pero ni hablar que el balance es positivo por donde se lo mire.

Jugar con La Dolfina fue una experiencia muy buena pero un equipo que realmente sentí que era bueno y que no tuvo la chance de ganar fue El Paraíso con Paco de Narvaez, mis hermanos Agustín y Sebastián y yo.

Durante los tres años seguidos que mantuvimos el equipo siempre hubo un lesionado y nunca pudimos terminar de jugar juntos una temporada entera. Ahora cuando estábamos todos y funcionaba, ese equipo era una máquina impresionante.

También el equipo de La Dolfina con Sebastián y yo al medio y el mago de Adolfito, que estaba recién organizándose, que ya hacía destrozos.m

“I feel a much better player than ever” Amid the calm of the stables at Ayala Polo Club, Juan Ignacio “Pite” Merlos, a living polo legend, welcomes La Bocha Polo Magazine for an interview in which he discusses everything: polo in the past, today’s game, players, horses and his future.

ite returns to Sotogrande for the second consecutive year after playing in the International Polo Tournament for HB Polo, the Ludovic brothers and Sebastien Pailloncy’s organisation.

“I’m happy to be back in Sotogrande. The other day I was thinking about the first time I came, it was in 1987 and it really hasn’t changed much”, says Pite Merlos at the start of a chat that takes place over a pot of mate [an Argentine infusion] and a plate of Argentinean pastries.

“Luckily Sotogrande has managed to get what it was missing, good stables and good places to practise and what they have achieved is great. In 1987 I was playing in Paniagua, in Río, they had four pitches I think, you played up to 16 goals, it was fun. I had come with a new team belonging to some Frenchmen”, he remembers.

Coincidentally, Merlos came to Sotogrande the second time with a French team and in recent years with another one, the Ludovic brothers and Sebastién Pailloncy’s HB. How is Pite Merlos feeling?

I feel very good, better than ever. A better player and physically great. It is a period I’m really enjoying.

I’m like the Chalchaleros [Argentine musical ensemble], I’ve retired lots of times and I keep coming back. Lots of people tell me to make room for someone else [laughs], but I feel really good.

Also, I have to stay in shape to play the odd important tournament with my son Juan Cruz who is doing really well. It’s like retaking all the steps I’ve taken, and although it’s his life, it’s great fun to be able to share with him in this sport that has given me so much.

I try to teach him to organise, about the details, to be an elite player, safety both on and off the pitch.

You’ve played with your father, your brothers and now your son, a privilege that few can experience, are you aware of that?

I’ve thought about it a lot, polo has given me the chance to share so many things and also for the family to be able to be with me through them is really a gift from God. The most important thing, and my father said it and I had never thought about it until now, is that polo gave him, and gave me, the chance to have a united family and

for everyone to enjoy the same passion.

Even the daughters, mine and those of my brothers, are polo fans, from a young age, horse riding, and they don’t miss a single event related to horses. So thank you polo.

Nowadays the Merlos family is more united by a passion for horses than polo itself. Polo is like everything, when it is fair it is wonderful, but sometimes you have to go through something painful or mundane, like all work and sport. But love and admiration is what, whether you are young or great, keeps us dedicated to making it a special day.

You have also played with many generations of polo players..

I was talking with a friend the other day and he was asking me what I do to keep playing competitively until now, when polo has changed so much.

I think it depends on the ability of the individual to adapt to the evolution of the game. I started playing with a mallet with a small head, with grass pitches and now everything is different. The most important thing is being able to adapt to all that.

I played my first high-handicap practice with Juan Carlos Harriot and the story from that practice is that he put me 60 yards away and Juan Carlitos’ backhanders were taking my head off and he said to me “Son, son, when I hit a backhander, turn round”, and I would move 10 yards back but his hits kept coming past me. Nowadays the good players don’t hit so many backhanders, they have to have more ball possession instead, so you learn what you have to in order to adapt to the game.

I’ve also played against Juan Carlos and Alfredo Harriot, Gonzalo Tanoira, Gonzalo and Alfonso Pieres, Ernesto Trotz, the Heguys, Adolfito Cambiaso, Facundo and Gonzalo Pieres, it really is a privilege not everyone can experience.

If you had to choose one of them, which one would it be?

Naming or picking one out is difficult because polo, like all sports, is a little unfair because there were, and there are, very good players who haven’t managed to win a lot of titles or have not had the press that others get. There are also great players that have never gone beyond playing with their close group, be they brothers or

friends, rejecting the chance to play in big teams in order to maintain friendships, for example Gonzalo Tanoira.

I consider Gonzalo Tanoira a very good player who I admired and tried to imitate, and I also really liked Celestino Garrós.

I had the fortune to play in every position, above all in the Argentinean Open, so whenever I changed position, from 1, 2, 3 or back, I would watch videos and study players who caught my eye in that position, I was crazy about the way Marcos Heguy played in 1, I also watched Adolfito (Cambiaso) a lot playing in 1 when he started. I loved Alfredo Harriot as a back, my brother Agustín is incredible as a forward. There are players with a lot of strengths who have not been so lucky with the press. I really can’t pick one out who is different from the rest, or better than another, because each era has its own requirements.

Do you prefer polo as it was before or today’s polo?

I find it easier to play today’s polo than that of before. I think everything is much better set up today, the rules make it safe for the players despite the greater pace of the game, as well as the improvement of the pitches and the horses. Before it was a case of anything goes and it was great fun.

With the family we watch a lot of my father’s finals, and ours and current ones, and we laugh so much. There are matches my father played in where they would fall off as many as five times in the same match, anything was acceptable, the mares would play seven minutes, they wouldn’t change, there were three fouls per chukker. And all that on grass pitches with mallets with small heads, and they never missed the ball.

There were a lot of different groups. Imagine a Heguy playing against a Merlos long ago, or a Novillo playing with a Pieres was practically impossible. The Novillos, the Heguys, the Pieres, Cambiaso, they were all fighting their own corner.

Now business allows, and forces them to mix which is not so good for fans of polo but it has its commercial advantages.

Personally, and from the point of view of the player, I think that respect and ethics between players has changed, it has really improved, today it is a sport, apart from very few exceptions, that is much safer.

don’t like it, I always preferred the rivalry, the classics between Chapa I and Chapa II, for example, today they don’t exist.

On the evolution of polo and of the horses..

The horse is now a perfect athlete. The possibility of understanding the horse a little more, the rational breaking, the supplementation in breeding, a load of things that have made the horse into a perfect athlete and that is a positive.

The embryo system led to good mares, before being exported, they’ll leave those foals.

But there was a significant vacuum in the 80s and 90s when the good mares were going and that’s why South Africa and Australia caught us up, countries with whom we still boast the best horses.

Before, as a professional player, I would go to buy horses in Argentina, now I sell them.

Ellerstina and the Pieres would go to buy horses in Argentina, now they sell them. So everyone who used to be on this side and went overseas to play, later came back to Argentina to buy horses and those who were in traditional breeding benefitted.

Nowadays they breed the six or seven types that they can afford to. The traditional breeder has disappeared and I think that’s a negative, it is something the Argentinean Association of Polo Horse Breeding has failed to achieve. They continue to pay more attention to those who spend more and not those who are less able to.

Describe Pite Merlos’ organisation…

It’s great, I generally have 8 to 10 polo grooms who I am with all year round, some travel with me, others with Juan Cruz, my son. There are three trainers one on the es-

tate and another two who travel. We make 40 embryos a year and another 20 breeding herds a year.

We are based in Trenque Lauquen and we use La Mariana, which is a club I share with my brothers, where there are three polo pitches, with a lot of boxes, which are still being added.

It is a lively, interesting, difficult and demanding job, but the satisfaction, after 20 years as a breeder, is huge. We’ve bred a type of horse that is what makes me who I am. I have always liked tidy horses that are low to the ground and easy to ride. That type of horse is what we have tried to produce. It is a style of horse that has given me results and on which I can imagine playing, which doesn’t suit everyone, probably, but it is the type of horse I like and I’m delighted with it.

Organisations you’ve played with..

I’m currently with HB, which belongs to the Ludovic brothers and Sebastién Pailloncy.

I’ve been with them for two seasons and when they came to see them it was a big challenge, I had to dig deep because all the horses were new, they were debuting in the High Handicap, it’s not common to see two amateurs on the same pitch. I know Cubi (Ignacio Toccalino) really well, so I decided to join his project.

The guys did something really good, which is giving Cubi time to get organised and get some of my years of experience out of me, to organise the team from within. They were committed to the group of people, more than worried about results.

Now the guys are starting a new stage, with a higher handicap, and with more potential.

They are doing things more for the long term

and that’s good. This is my last year with them and I’m really grateful for the opportunity.

I’ve played with a lot of organisations and all of them have taught me something. Black Bears, for example, took me in when I was 21, they gave me the chance to organise everything and we won three Queens Cups and Gold Cups. Black Bears taught me about the human side, Lechuza Caracas really helped me in terms of professionals, horses, teammates, teams, people and also gave me every chance to win. Isla Carrol also gave me a lot. But the most important thing about all of them is what they gave me from a human point of view and that is what stays with you.

What are the most exotic places you’ve played in?

María Pía, Trenque Lauquen, my home!

We had a 4 meter high dune and I said “we’re going to build a polo pitch here”.

They said I was crazy, that it was impossible, we did it four times and it took more than ten years. Finally we have two pitches there!

Then, incredible places I have played in, Sotogrande is one, as a chance to do things well. It really is incredible. A place with all the facilities, the weather, the pitches, a club like Ayala that offers all the commodities, being able to play high handicap practices every day.

What Sotogrande has done, which nobody else has, is understand that an elite team and elite professional have needs. Sotogrande has all the facilities. At Sotogrande the winner is the best and the one who is better organised, there are no excuses because

they have everything.

Apart from Pilar in Argentina, there is nowhere else in the world like that.

I also loved playing in Santa Barbara, California. I also really liked England, above all the years when it didn’t rain much, among many other places I had the chance to play in where I have great memories of.

Pite Merlos at the Argentinean Open?

I’ve been through two different phases in my participation in the Argentinean Open. I’ve played in 27 Opens, half of them were an adventure.

With eight or nine goals, 23 years old, I didn’t have a polo horse, I had to borrow one, I was organised, but I always knew if I wanted to play well in Palermo, I’d have to play well overseas.

Now I have all the horses available that I want, I didn’t used to. And when my father retired from polo I inherited some horses in the first few years.

First I competed to be the best, until I was able to get results overseas, where I won the US Open, the Gold Cup, the Queens Cup and the Australian Open. Then I was well known, which allowed me to buy the horses I wanted and play with who I wanted at the Palermo Open.

They are two well defined stages, the first 10 Opens and the second 15. In the latter stage it really was incredible. It is to be at the top, the best in the world. I reached six finals, won one, won seven Hurlingham Opens. I was able to experience what it is to win an Open.

I actually lost finals we should have won, with La Dolfina, with La Mariana, but it doesn’t matter, it is positive overall, no matter how you look at it.

Playing with La Dolfina was a great experience, but a team that I really felt were good and never had a chance to win was El Paraíso with Naravez, my brothers Agustín and Sebastián and me.

In the three years we kept the team there was always an injury and we never managed to complete a whole season together. When we were all there and it worked, that team was quality.

Also the La Dolfina team with Sebastián and me in the middle and the magic of Adolfito, who was organising his exit from Ellerstina, who were doing amazing things.m

Do you think Sotogrande could extend its polo season even more?

What’s happened in the last two seasons in August in Sotogrande doesn’t happen anywhere else. In August Sotogrande is the polo Mecca and that is an achievement.

I would say that four years ago there were no organisations that committed in advance to come and play at Santa María Polo Club in August, nowadays if you don’t book in time you won’t get a spot.

In the rest of the year it is more difficult to compete against an established calendar. It is very complicated for one of the top organisations to stop competing in the US or England to go to Sotogrande. And it’s very difficult to compete with that. I do think they could come forward or go back a couple more weeks and fit in a couple more tournaments. The polo season is very hard and the owners of the organisations don’t have much time to come and spend three months playing in Sotogrande I wonder if Sotogrande would have the same standard of people in a final on the 10th of September as on the 30th of August. I don’t know, but I don’t think so, and it’s difficult to fight that. But I think they could move a few weeks.

It’s very difficult to commit to players who are playing on the international circuit and to stop competing at the important venues to come and play in a place that doesn’t form part of that circuit or outside of its usual season.

In any case, Sotogrande is not the same as it was three years ago.

The organisations commit one year in advance to come back and that has been achieved through good pitches, good weather and all the infrastructure that didn’t used to exist. That’s why in August, Sotogrande does dominate the rest, above all for the players. That didn’t happen before. Before it was just people who were still keen to play after England, now if you don’t confirm in March you can miss out.

I think Sotogrande is going to keep going strong and for me, you can play 15 days more, afterwards or beforehand.

Tuve la suerte de jugar en todas las posiciones, sobre todo en el Abierto Argentino, entonces cada vez que me movía de posición, de 1, 2, 3 o back, iba viendo videos y estudiando jugadores que en su posición me deslumbraban.

Por ejemplo, Marcos Heguy de 1 a mí me volvía loco como jugaba, Adolfito (Cambiaso) jugando de 1 en sus inicios y en este tiempo de ahora también lo miro mucho. Alfredo Harriot de back me encantaba, mi hermano Agustín de delantero es impresionante. Hay jugadores que tienen muchas virtudes pero con más o menos suerte para ganar o más o menos prensa. La verdad que no puedo sacar uno que sea distinto a otro, o mejor que otro, porque las épocas te marcan distintas necesidades. ¿El polo de antes o el de ahora?

Me es más fácil jugar el polo de ahora que el de antes. Creo que uno está mucho más montado ahora, que las reglas preservan más la seguridad del jugador pese a que se juega con más velocidad, además de la mejoría en las canchas y los caballos. Antes valía todo y la verdad que era muy divertido.

Vemos con la familia muchos videos de finales de mi padre, nuestras y actuales, y nos reímos muchísimo. Hay partidos que jugaba mi padre que se caían hasta cinco veces en un mismo partido, valía todo, las yeguas jugaban siete minutos, no se cambiaban, había tres fouls por chukker. Y eso en canchas de gramilla y con tacos con cigarros pequeños, y no le erraban a la bocha.

Eran muchas granjas distintas. Imaginarse tiempo atrás a un Heguy jugando con un Merlos o que un Novillo jugase con un Pieres era casi imposible. Eran los Novillo, los Heguy, los Pieres, Cambiaso, cada uno por su lado.

Hoy el negocio permite, o los obliga, a mezclarse lo cual no está tan bueno para los fanáticos del polo pero comercialmente alguno sacará su ventaja.

Personalmente, y desde el punto de vista del jugador, creo que el respeto y la ética entre los jugadores ha cambiado, ha mejorado mucho,

hoy es un deporte, salvo casos muy raros, que está mucho más seguro.

Ahora desde el punto de vista del hincha del polo, no me gusta, siempre preferí la rivalidad, los clásicos entre Chapa I y Chapa II, por ejemplo. Hoy ya no existen.

En la evolución del polo, la de los caballos..

El caballo ya es un atleta perfecto. En la posibilidad de entender el caballo un poco más, la doma racional, la suplementación en la cría, un montón de cosas que han hecho del caballo un atleta perfecto y ese es un punto favorable.

El sistema de embriones permitió que las yeguas buenas, antes de exportarse, dejaran esas crías. Pero tuvimos un vacío importante en los años 80 y 90 en el cual las yeguas buenas se iban y por eso nos alcanzó Sudáfrica y Australia, países con los cuáles todavía hoy compartimos la punta de caballos buenos.

Antes como jugador profesional yo iba a comprar caballos a Argentina, ahora los vendo.

Ellerstina o los Pieres iban y compraban caballos en Argentina, ahora los venden. Entonces todos los que estábamos de este lado y salíamos afuera a jugar luego veníamos a comprar caballos a Argentina y los que estaban en cría tradicionales se veían beneficiados.

Hoy crían los seis o siete tipos que económicamente pueden afrontarlo. El criador artesanal desapareció y eso creo que es un punto negativo, es algo que la Asociación de Criadores de Caballos de Polo Argentino no ha podido lograr. Le siguen dando bola al que más gasta y no al que menos puede. ¿Cómo es la organización de Pite Merlos?

Generalmente tengo a 8 o 10 petiseros con los cuáles me muevo todo el año, algunos viajan conmigo, otros con Juan Cruz mi hijo. Hay tres domadores, uno fijo en el campo, otros dos flotantes. Se hacen 40 embriones por año, otras 20 manadas de cría por año. Es grande.

compartido con mis hermanos, donde hay tres canchas de Polo, con una gran cantidad de boxes y que aún se sigue agrandando.

Es un trabajo movidito, interesante, costoso y demandante pero la satisfacción, después de 20 años como criador, es muy grande. Hemos logrado un tipo de caballo que es lo que a mi me llevo a ser lo que soy. Siempre me gustó el caballo prolijo, pegado al piso, que no me lleve mucho, que reduzca. Ese tipo de caballo es lo que hemos podido transmitir a lo que estamos produciendo. Es un estilo de caballo que me dio resultado y en cual puedo imaginarme al piloto arriba, que no a todos les calza, lo más probable, pero es un tipo de caballo que a mí me gusta y estoy contentísimo con ello.

Organizaciones con las que has jugado..

En el presente con HB. Llevo dos temporadas con ellos y cuando me vinieron a ver fue un challenge bastante fuerte, había que meterle coraje porque toda la caballada era nueva, ellos debutaban en el Alto Handicap, no es común ver dos amateurs en un mismo equipo.

Conozco mucho a Cubi (Ignacio Toccalino) entonces decidí subirme al proyecto.

La verdad que los chicos hicieron algo muy bueno, que es darle tiempo a que Cubi se organizara y sacar de mí un poco los años de experiencia, para organizar un equipo desde adentro. Apostaron más al grupo humano que a los resultados.

Ahora los chicos comienzan una etapa distinta, con más handicap, con alguien de mayor proyección. Hacen las cosas más a largo plazo y eso está bueno. Este es mi último año con ellos y estoy muy agradecido por la oportunidad que me dieron.

He jugado con muchas organizaciones y todas me han enseñado algo. Black Bears, por ejemplo, me agarró con 21 años, me dió la posibilidad de organizar todo y ganamos tres Queens Cup y Gold Cup. Black Bears me enseñó mucho la parte humana, Lechuza Caracas

La formación de Capial se adjudicó el XXII Memorial Fundador Enrique Zobel, Torneo de Mediano Handicap que inauguró la Temporada de Verano que organiza anualmente el Santa María Polo Club en el mes de julio.

El equipo integrado por Nestor Peralta, Carlos Piñal, Juan Britos y Diogo Gallego se adjudicó el certamen por diferencia de goles al quedar igualados en puntaje los tres equipos participantes Ayala Polo Team (Iñigo Zobel, Santiago Laborde, Alejo Taranco y Sophie Stanek), Silex (Richard Fagan, Daniel Gariador, Santiago Cernadas y Mariano Iturrioz) y Capial.

Don Enrique Zobel Olgado, nació el 7 de enero de 1927 y murió el 17 de mayo de 2004 en Filipinas. Junto con Joe McMicking, fue el verdadero creador e impulsor de Sotogrande y con enorme visión y capacidad empresarial, supo posicionarla como una de las mejores y más prestigiosas urbanizaciones de lujo de Europa. Fue un gran empresario y una gran persona por todos recordada.

En el último partido del torneo, Silex venció a Capial por 9 a 8. Con una diferencia de goles de +2, el equipo de Capial logró subir a lo más alto del podio.

En la segunda posición quedó Ayala Polo Team.

Santa María Polo Club organizó, previo al Torneo Internacional Land Rover de Polo, sus tradicionales torneos de verano del mes de julio, el Memorial Fundador Enrique Zobel y el Memorial Manuel de Prado y Colón de Carvajal

MEMORIAL MANUEL DE PRADO Y COLÓN DE CARVAJAL Una semana más tarde a la disputa del Memorial Zobel, Silex se consagró campeón del Torneo Memorial Manuel de Prado y Colón de Carvajal que se jugó en las canchas de Puente de Hierro de Santa María Polo Club.

Este certamen contó con la participación de cuatro equipos de hasta 12 goles de handicap.

En la última fecha, el equipo de Silex

(K. Shakib, A. Taranco, S. Cernadas y F. Serra) derrotó a K2 (V. Kumar, D. Gallego, G. Mazzini y A. Álvarez) por 12 a 10 y se coronó campeón invicto del certamen.

Previamente, el equipo Equus / Woodchester (N. Peralta, P. Berazadi, J. Britos y C. McKinney) venció a Sapphire (A. Abbar, M. Malacalza, T. Pieres y L. Isola) por 12 a 9 y se clasificó como segundo del Memorial Manuel de Prado y Colón de Carvajal.

Don Manuel Prado y Colón de Carvajal, nació el 17 de Noviembre de 1931 en Quito (Ecuador) y falleció el 5 de Diciembre de 2009 en Sevilla (España).

Santa Maria Polo Club quiere rendir un homenaje a su figura celebrando este Memorial Manuel de Prado y Colón de

Carvajal, en agradecimiento y en memoria a su enorme contribución al desarrollo del Polo en Sotogrande, con su permanente apoyo y colaboración en la promoción de este deporte y de todo el Sur de España.

Instituyó la Copa Toñanejo en el año 1993, un clásico en el calendario de Torneos del Club, que celebró su XX edición el pasado año, y toma el relevo este Memorial Manuel de Prado y Colón de Carvajal.

La tradición fundada por D. Manuel Prado y Colón de Carvajal fue heredada por su hijo D. Manuel Prado Eulate, que actualmente es Socio Honorífico del Club y que participó en numerosos torneos del Club, ganando la Copa de Oro en tres ediciones, en 1982, 1986 y 1990 con el equipo Toñanejo m

The best preview ENRIQUE ZOBEL FUNDADOR MEMORIAL The Capial side won the twenty-second Enrique Zobel Fundador Memorial, a Medium Handicap Tournament that opened the Summer Season organised by the Santa María Polo Club every year in July.

The team made up of Nestor Peralta, Carlos Piñal, Juan Britos and Diogo Gallego won the contest on goal difference after all three teams finished level on points; Ayala Polo Team (Iñigo Zobel, Santiago Laborde, Alejo Taranco and Sophie Stanek), Silex (Richard Fagan,

Daniel Gariador, Santiago Cernadas and Mariano Iturrioz) and Capial.

In the final match of the tournament, Silex beat Capial 9-8. With a goal difference of +2, Capial topped the podium.

Ayala Polo Team finished second.

Don Enrique Zobel Olgado, was born on 7 January 1927 and passed away on 17 May 2004 in the Philippines.

MANUEL DE PRADO Y COLÓN DE CARVAJAL MEMORIAL One week after the Zobel Memorial, Silex were crowned champions of the Manuel de Prado y Colón de Carvajal Memorial Tournament, which was played on the Santa María Polo Club’s Puente de Hierro pitches.

The event was participated in by four teams with handicaps of up to 12 goals.

On the final day, the Silex team (K. Shakib, A. Taranco, S. Cernadas and F. Serra) beat K2 (V. Kumar, D. Gallego, G. Mazzini and A. Álvarez) 12-10 to become the unbeaten champions.

Previously, Equus/Woodchester (N. Peralta,

He created the Copa Toñanejo in 1993, a classic on the Club Tournaments calendar, which was held for the twentieth time last year, and the Manuel de Prado y Colón de Carvajal Memorial tournament has now taken over from it.

The tradition established by Don Manuel Prado y Colón de Carvajal was inherited by his son, Manuel Prado Eulate, who is currently an honorary member of the club and participated in many club tournaments, winning the Gold Cup on three occasions, in 1982, 1986 and 1990 with the Toñanejo team. m

A

lgeciras vivió su primer torneo de polo en la arena a mediados de julio con la disputa del Polo Arena Algeciras 2014.

Este evento, que contó con la organización de Luciano Irazabal y el apoyo del Ayuntamiento de Algeciras y el Puerto de Algeciras, se realizó en la explanada del Club Naútico.

En la primera edición del Polo Arena Algeciras participaron cuatro equipos:

España, Uruguay, Argentina e Inglaterra.

España, equipo integrado por Sergio Pérez y Mario Gómez, se proclamó campeón tras derrotar en la final a Argentina (Andrew Nulty y Mariano Iturrioz) al tiempo que Uruguay (Luciano Irazabal y Joanna Mobley) venció a Inglaterra (Christian Byrne y Álvaro Ara) y se adjudicó la tercera posición.

En el primer día de juego, Argentina venció a Inglaterra y España hizo lo propio con Uruguay para clasificar a la gran final.

En la jornada final, y previo a los partidos decisivos, se realizó un torneo de penales, Copa Takito Polo Mallets, que tuvo a Uruguay como ganador gracias a la gran efectividad de Joanna Mobley que acertó todos los penales que ejecutó.

Una gran carpa y un estrado, donde el grupo La Movida animó con su música los dos días de torneo, se montaron al costado de la cancha, que fue especialmente acondicionada para la ocasión en la explanada del Club Náutico. m

n July, Algeciras held its first beach polo competition; the 2014 Algeciras Beach Polo tournament.

The event, which was organised by Luciano Irazabal with the support of the Algeciras council and the Port of Algeciras, was held on Yacht Club’s esplanade.

The first Algeciras Beach Polo tournament included four teams: Spain, Uruguay, Argentina and England.

Spain, the team formed by Sergio Pérez and Mario Gómez, were crowned champions after beating Argentina (Andrew Nulty and Mariano Iturrioz) in the final, while Uruguay (Luciano Irazabal and Joanna Mobley) beat England (Christian Byrne and Álvaro Ara) to take third place.

On the first day’s play, Argentina beat England while Spain did the same to Uruguay to reach the final.

A penalty tournament, the Takito Polo Mallets Cup, was held on the final day before the decisive matches. Uruguay won the cup thanks to some critical finishing from Joanna Mobley who scored all the penalties she took.

A large marquee and stage, where the group La Movida entertained with their music on both days of the tournament, were erected beside the pitch, which was set up on the Yacht Club’s esplanade especially for the tournament. m
