COLUMBUS HISTORICAL SOCIETY

SITE PLAN
We have developed our form with the initial effort of asserting consciousness towards the historical context of Columbus while also pushing to promote the opportunity that lies in a developing city. This is achieved by creating a procession through time,
beginning with a series of immersive historical galleries which introduce the three-part form that represents the idea of past, present and future. From here, an open lobby acts as a public space, available to guests outside of its primary function, inviting people into the space. Beyond this, the final wing houses all shared and collaborative spaces we see in the historical society program. This movement through time is reinforced through a steady rise in elevation as you proceed through the building. All this is tied together through a central landscape space, which works to create shared views and moments in form.

Our form is meant to guide visitors along a continuous path through time, beginning in the past, moving through the
present and concluding with the innovation spaces of the future. While each wing holds its own individual circulation routes, we also wanted to create a main procession for visitors which would encourage them to experience the building as a whole and transport them through time.
GALLERY PROCESSION Our gallery space promotes the progression through our building in a flexible manner, allowing the linked galleries to be manipulated before moving you into the large main gallery and then up the ramp to the shared public space. For the Alfieri exhibit, we took the approach of creating a series of different experiences in space as you advance through the viewing of two dimensional objects to three dimensional objects, culminating in the viewing of the Columbus statue at the end of the procession.
ADMINISTRATION PROCESSION The employees at our historical society will enter through an inconspicuous door that provides more direct access from the parking lot. They can then proceed into the archive or up the elevator to the main space or private office level. Bathrooms on the ground floor of this space are accessible to the employees, as well as the public, from the gallery and courtyard, but are separated to restrict public access to the administration areas.
MEETING PROCESSION To access the meeting spaces and auditorium, you must either progress through the gallery and public spaces of the building or enter separately through the large stair in the courtyard. From here, visitors will travel up the ramp and then back to the conference and community rooms or continue forward into the auditorium. They also have to opportunity to visit the balcony and overlook the courtyard. After concluding their time in this space, visitors can return to the "present" to exit the building.
Upon entering the courtyard, visitors will pass a reflecting pool in front of the gallery wing, which aims to represent the idea of
Franklinton rising up out of the floods. They will then walk among a collection of statues representing significant historical figures of Columbus to inform them of the past and create the idea that they, too, can become a part of the city's history.
The materials on the exterior of our building reinforce our concept of past, present and future in a different way. The brick that covers the gallery wing pays homage to the two historical buildings on either side of our historical society, relating back to the past. The wing that represents our idea of the present is made up of mainly glass and concrete to lend to an idea of openness and connectivity to the present times. Lastly, the auditorium is clad with copper that references the brick of the gallery wing in size and color, representing a futuristic interpretation of a historical material. On the interior, a consistent wood flooring is used throughout to speak to the continuous procession we have created through time.
