Retirees Two teachers retire this year: Mrs. Anne Petrarco and Mr. Frank Steponaitis. Mrs. Petrarco is retiring after 31 years in the Foreign Language department and Mr. Steponaitis after 25 years in the Social Studies department. We wish both of them well.

Educator of the Year Mr. Frank Steponaitis was recently selected as Holy Cross’ Educator of the Year.

Nominated by his colleagues and selected by the administration, the Educator of the Year Award is based on the exhibition of Holy Cross Mission effectiveness along with quality performance as a teacher/ educator. Any teacher, guidance counselor, or program director who has served Holy Cross for a minimum of four years is eligible for nomination.

Mr. Steponaitis is retiring after 40 years of teaching – 15 years at St. Thomas School in Thomaston and 25 years at Holy Cross. His family has established a scholarship in his honor.

As a lifelong educator in Catholic schools, Frank was passionate about teaching, dedicated to his students, and espoused strong Christian values. He will best be remembered for his quick wit and great sense of humor.

Frank represents what it truly means to be an educator in the Holy Cross Tradition.

THE PRESIDENT’S YEAR IN REVIEW

The Fortieth Commencement Exercises of Holy Cross, held on May 29th, brought to a close a most successful and rewarding school year that was filled with wonderful stories and accomplishments.

Our graduates head out to a cross section of outstanding colleges and universities having amassed close to $4 million in scholarships and grants. They will be attending such schools as Georgetown, Notre Dame, Boston College, Arizona State, Manhattan, Hamilton, Fairfield, and Holy Cross to name just a few.

Academically, we introduced Italian in the Foreign Language department, installed a state of the art language lab, and upgraded our science labs. Our annual Honors Convocation saw numerous awards presented to students of all grade levels as well as the induction of juniors and seniors into the Oronoque Chapter of the National Honor Society.

The Fine Arts continue to be alive and well. Our Christmas Concert took place at the Palace Theater with a special appearance

by Dylan McDermott, Class of 1979. The Fall Drama production of Happily Ever Once Upon and the Spring Musical, Evita, were outstanding. The annual Spring Concert took place in May and simultaneously our First Annual Art Show was held in the Alix Family Gallery.

Our highly competitive interscholastic athletic program continues to provide rich experiences for our students. There were great individual and team successes coupled with recognitions for sportsmanship and academic achievement. Four hundred sixtyfive students participated in at least one of the 21 interscholastic sports offered. We also were the recipient of the prestigious Michaels Cup Award. Next year we will be introducing lacrosse.

In October, Blessed Andre Bessette, CSC, was canonized making him the first saint in the Congregation of Holy Cross. Soon Blessed Basil Moreau, founder of the Congregation, will also be canonized.

Our outreach program involves literally hundreds of our students who voluntarily give of their time to serve others. I am proud to say they do so not because it is required but because it is the right thing to do. It is the Holy Cross way.

Student Government is very much a part of school life helping to oversee the more than 40 clubs and activities. Last July a group of students attended the Holy Cross Student Leadership Conference at Holy Cross College in Notre Dame, Indiana. As of this writing, another group is attending that same conference at St. Edward’s University in Austin, TX. Improvements were made to enhance facilities and add to the beauty of this wonderful campus. The parking lots were paved, tennis courts redone, and appropriate signage installed around the property.

During the course of the school year, we hosted “Breakfast with the President” gatherings for legacy students. It is great to have so many alumni continue the Holy Cross tradition with their families. We have over 180 alumni children in all four classes representing 199 alumni parents and we will continue to host receptions with these special legacy students.

We also had an opportunity to invite our freshmen to bring their grandparents to a breakfast at the school.

We obviously have much for which to be thankful.

However, we still have much to do to meet current and future challenges. To meet those challenges and the opportunities they represent, the Holy Cross Board of Directors is in the process of putting together a strategic plan, “In Pursuit of Excellence - Making the Difference”, which will give shape and direction to Holy Cross as we look five years down the road.

My hope is that you will join us as we make our vision a reality.

The Catholic Identity and Holy Cross Mission are woven into the fabric of every aspect of school life.

Prayer services are held each morning in Memorial Chapel and school community liturgies are celebrated on holy days and other occasions. Legacy Breakfast

Grandparents Breakfast

O

n Oct. 30th, Holy Cross hosted its first Annual Grandparents Breakfast. Sixty-four grandparents of our freshman students were welcomed at the event which included a prayer service, campus tours, and breakfast with the President and Advancement staff. This was a wonderful opportunity for our youngsters to share a morning at school with their grandparents who are a special part of their lives. It was a pleasure to see how much the participants enjoyed themselves and we look forward to meeting many more grandparents in the future.

Student Outreach

oly Cross continues its commitment to the elderly in the Waterbury community. For many years, students and faculty have visited Apple Rehab on Bunker Hill in Waterbury at least once a month to bring enrichment

I

n the fall, President McDonald invited 46 freshmen, who are children of alumni, for breakfast in the Advancement suite. The students viewed their parent’s yearbooks and got to chat with the Advancement staff as well as the President who shared many stories about when their parents were students at Holy Cross.

In May, Mr. McDonald hosted breakfast with 38 students from the Class of 2011 whose parents are HC Alumni. They shared many laughs with their classmates over their parent’s photos in their yearbooks as well as seeing faculty photos from years ago. We wish our graduates great success in college.

4 programs to elderly residents through Holy Cross’ yearlong Home to Home service program. In May, Holy Cross sponsored “May Planting” at Apple. Armed with colorful flats of impatiens, ageratums, coleus, marigolds and pots, trowels, and potting soil, students and Apple residents spent a sunny afternoon planting flowers and renewing friendships. Everyone enjoyed juice and cookies as the event wrapped up. In September, Holy Cross will return to Apple with a 2011-2012 kick off program entitled “Fall Planting.” Many students have already signed up for the event.

from the Archdiocese of Hartford’s Office of Radio and Television were on hand to film the festivities for its April 9th edition of Crossroads Magazine, a weekly television show.

Holy Cross returned to Abbott Terrace on May 5th, for a spirited Cinco de Mayo celebration. Included in the afternoon’s events were Spanish conversation, Spanish music, games, delicious snacks, and smiles all around. A kick off event for Fall 2011 is already in the planning stages.

In October, for the first time, Apple Rehab will sponsor a room at Halloween Happening, Holy Cross’ fall service project where students from two area elementary schools visit Holy Cross for an afternoon of Halloween fun and safe trick or treating through the halls of Holy Cross.

This spring, Holy Cross’ Home to Home service program expanded its outreach to elderly residents in downtown Waterbury. In March and May, faculty and students from the newly formed Amigos Spanish Club visited Abbott Terrace.

Students and residents enjoyed numerous games of checkers, Bingo, Scrabble, and cards. Holy Cross students shared their musical talents singing, playing guitars, and piano to the delight of the residents. The afternoon wrapped up with juice and baked goodies provided by Abbott Terrace. St. Joseph’s Oratory, one of the largest Catholic shrines in North America, is a great basilica with a giant copper dome built in honor of St. Joseph, patron saint of Canada. The massive edifice, high on the slopes of Mount Royale in Quebec, belies its simple origins as the dream of a humble lay brother named Brother André. Pilgrims still come from all over North America to pray for healing at Blessed André’s shrine.

HC Student Leadership Conference

oly Cross students and faculty (pictured left to right) Martha Giammatteo, Director of Student Activities, Ryan Gobstein, Patsy Casalino, Cayla Fappiano, Rachel Milo, Gabriel Hamawi, and Michael Giampetruzzi, Assistant Principal, along with students and faculty from six other schools sponsored by the Congregation of Holy Cross attended the fifth annual Holy Cross Conference for Student Leaders at Holy Cross College in Notre Dame, Indiana last summer.

Students Vincent Ingala, Sarah-Kate Chiovitti, Stephanie Varanelli, and Connor Prince, chaperoned by Mr. Louis Howe, Campus Minister, represented Holy Cross. Vinnie said this about his experience, “Montreal has allowed me the opportunity to truly understand the Holy Cross tradition while reaffirming my belief in its mission.”

The goal of the conference was to educate student leaders in the heritage and mission of Holy Cross to prepare them to become Holy Cross leaders in their schools. Ryan Gobstein expressed, “the conference was a once in a lifetime experience, but the friends I made and the knowledge acquired will last a lifetime.”

Among the many on campus activities were team-building exercises, meetings with retired Brothers, daily prayer and reflection, presentations about the history of the Congregation in the United States, workshops in service learning, and a pilgrimage to nearby Notre Dame University. Off campus activities included a day spent in community service and evening outings to a South Bend Silver Hawks game and the South Bend Chocolate Factory. The conference ended with students discussing ways they planned to implement all they had learned in their schools.

“Students and faculty came away from the five day conference with a heightened sense of what it means to be a member of the Holy Cross community and a leader in the Holy Cross tradition,” said Martha Giammatteo.

Pilgrimage to St. Joseph’s Oratory in Montreal

total of sixteen students and eleven adults from our Midwest, Eastern, and South-West Provinces of Brothers’ schools made the tenth annual pilgrimage to St. Joseph’s Oratory in Montreal in July 2010. The students were representatives from Holy Cross High School in

Relay for Life

S

tudents and faculty participated in the American Cancer Society’s Annual Greater Waterbury’s Relay for Life held at Crosby High School in June 2011. The students had various activities prior to and throughout the day to raise money for this great cause. They had a lot of fun and were glad to be a part of this community fundraiser.

Founders’ Week

D

uring the third week of March, the Holy Cross community celebrated Founders’ Week, honoring Blessed Basil Moreau and St. Marguerite Bourgeoys. Our theme for this year’s Founders’ Week was “Crusade Around the World: Cross Cultures this Founders’ Week.”

The first day was Fine Arts Day where we celebrated the wonderful artistic talents of our community and highlighted our terrific Fine Arts Department. There were special “Evita” themed bells to pass classes, music presentations before school and at lunch, an art exhibit, and free churros at lunch. Day Two was Spirituality Day where we celebrated who we are as God’s people. The celebrant at the school wide liturgy was Monsignor Thomas Ginty ’76. During the liturgy, Br. Tom Sawyer, CSC, our IT Director, celebrated his 50th jubilee by renewing his vows. Many Brothers of Holy Cross were present at the liturgy. The celebration continued with free green and gold cake in the cafe. Athletics Day followed and we had the opportunity to celebrate the wonderful athletic talents of our students and highlight our Athletic program. Students wore their favorite team jersey, played “Minute to Win It” and won free ice cream. There were also free root beer floats served during lunch! Clubs and Classes Day allowed students to display various student-made murals in the cafe and dress in opposites. Freshmen were cowboys and indians, sophomores were superheroes and villains, juniors were pirates and sailors, seniors were jocks and nerds, and faculty wore their choice! All and all it was a week full of fun activities and celebrations.

Michael Casey ’05 is installed to Ministry of Acolyte

Fifty-three seminarians, including Michael Casey ‘05, of the Pontifical North American College were instituted to the Ministry of Acolyte during the Sunday celebration of the Eucharist on March 6, 2011.

His Eminence James Francis Cardinal Stafford, Major Penitentiary Emeritus and former Archbishop of Denver, celebrated the Mass and instituted the new acolytes. After handing to each seminarian the gold paten used in the celebration of the Eucharist, the Cardinal said, “Take this vessel of bread for the celebration of the Eucharist. Make your lives worthy of your service at the table of the Lord and of his Church.”

These seminarians have now received both the ministry of Lector and Acolyte in anticipation of their diaconal ordinations and, God-willing, priestly ordination. As the rite indicates, an acolyte is charged with assisting at the celebration of the Eucharist, purifying the sacred vessels and when needed to assist with the distribution of Holy Communion. This is Michael’s final step before his Transitional Deacon Ordination October 2012.

The Arts

Performing Arts Christmas Concert at the Palace

T

his year our Annual Christmas Concert was held at the Palace Theater in Waterbury. Under the direction of Joe Jacovino, “Miracle on East Main Street” featured performances by our guitar and bass ensemble, flute choir, concert choir, handbell choir, concert band, Crosstones, girls’ jazz and pop choir, jazz band, and chamber choir.

Actor Dylan McDermott, class of 1979, offered to host this event to help raise scholarship money for Holy Cross students. Mr. McDermott also hosted a private luncheon at Roma Ristorante in Oakville and a VIP reception prior to the concert. All proceeds from these events fund the scholarship. Mayor Mike Jarjura presented the actor with the key to the city, a proclamation and a street sign which is hung on the corner of Scovill and Cole Streets in downtown Waterbury. Spring Musical

T

he great rock opera EVITA written by Andrew Lloyd Weber is returning to Broadway in the 2012 season with Ricky Martin in the lead role of Ché. Holy Cross Student Theatre presented EVITA as their 2011 spring musical.

This well-known musical relates the story of the rise to power of Eva Duarte, a poor girl from a small town outside of Buenos Aires, Argentina, to the first lady of Argentina and the wife of Argentina’s President Juan Perón.

The cast was composed of nearly 50 Holy Cross students drawn from all four classes. Eva Duarte (the young Eva

on the rise) was played by Gloria Antonios, a senior from Thomaston; Evita Perón (the confident, in power Eva)

by Lianna Squillace, a senior from Watertown, and Eva Perón (the dying Eva whose life we are watching unfold) by Christina Schlupp a junior from Prospect. Ché, Eva’s guide on this review of her life was played by Joey Antonios, a senior from Thomaston; Juan Perón, Eva’s husband, by Nick Cavallo, a sophomore from Prospect; Agustín Magaldi, Eva’s first opportunity, by Will Durant, a senior from Waterbury; and Perón’s latest mistress by Sarah Fainer, a senior from Naugatuck. And, a small children’s chorus had been graciously assembled from students from Rotella Magnet School in Waterbury.

EVITA was directed by Mr. Paul Whealon, a faculty member at Holy Cross, ably assisted by Mrs. Peggy Johns.

Choreography and dance direction was created by Mr. Ralph Cantito ‘75, vocal direction was by Mr. David Irvine and orchestral preparation was by Mr. David Gardino.

Technical and backstage responsibilities are being handled

by Mr. Zack Pilat and his three student stage managers, juniors Jeff Lawton (from Waterbury), Jenna Parrella (from Prospect) and James Silva (from Watertown). A mark of the professionalism that Holy Cross Student Theatre fosters is that 99% of the orchestra and backstage personnel are students from Holy Cross.

Visual Arts

H

oly Cross held its first Annual Art Show in the Alix Family Gallery in May. This event coincided with the spring musical and was open to preview before and after the show as well as during intermission. The work of our Art students, faculty and that of Alumni were on display. A reception followed which allowed the opportunity to meet some of the talented artists. Thank you to all who made this amazing Art Show possible.

he 2010-2011 school year provided another excellent year with 463 of our 730 students participating in interscholastic athletics.

Holy Cross Has Three In The National Wrestling Hall Of Fame

F

ormer Holy Cross Coach and Athletic Director, Jim Cunningham and wrestler, Gralyn Harris ‘77 were inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and were honored by the Connecticut Chapter of the Oklahoma-based Hall of Fame and Museum in 2010. They join John Rowland ’75.

Cunningham received the Lifetime Achievement Award for coaches, officials, media or contributors with at least 20 years of service. He was the Athletic Director Girls Cross Country Copper Division Champion at Holy Cross for 34 years and coached the wrestling team from 1971-89. He was Girls Swimming WCSOA Sportsmanship Award honored by the CT High School Coaches Association as its wrestling Coach of Boys Basketball Copper Division Champion the Year in 1983 and as Athletic Girls Basketball Copper Division Champion Director of the Year in 1995. Jim said, “In receiving this award and NVL Champion going through the ceremony that Cheerleading CIAC Class M Champion evening, I was most proud of all Softball Copper Division Champion the people, family, friends and Golf Copper Division Champion especially all the young men who Football Officials Sportsmanship Award were affected by their participation in wrestling which influenced HC - MVPs them so positively as a person into Football Brandon DiClementi and through their adult lives. I Boys Cross Country Dan Creem was pleased as well to be with such great company with fellow inductee and Holy Girls Cross Country Megan Bobinski Cross graduate, Gralyn Harris and past inductee and Holy Cross graduate, John Boys Soccer Dan Fazzino Rowland.”

Retired Lieutenant Colonel Gralyn Harris ’77 received The Outstanding American award in 1976 which is for former wrestlers who have received state or national acclaim in his/her chosen profession. Gralyn served 24 years in the U.S. Army’s Military Intelligence Corps at multiple postings across the Middle East. He has numerous accomplishments in the areas of wrestling and judo, including serving as Vice President of the National Collegiate Judo Association. An educator at heart, Gralyn served as an assistant professor of Arabic at West Point. Presently Gralyn coaches the wrestling team at Greenbrier (Ga.) High School and resides in Evans, Ga. with his wife Hattie and their four children.

Each award recipient is permanently recognized in the National Wrestling Hall of Fame (Stillwater, Oklahoma) with an embossed name plaque, and each received a plaque and jacket to commemorate the very special occasion.

Michaels Cup Holy Cross High School has been selected as a CIAC Michaels Cup recipient for its accomplishments during the 2010-2011 school year. The Michaels Cup recognizes schools who continually provide exemplary athletic programs. The committee defines “exemplary” as athletic participation, academic success, equitable opportunities, trained and professional personnel, chemical free programs, athletic achievement, and a clear sense of sportsmanship marked by high ethical and moral standards.

At the Fortieth Commencement Exercises the following Special Awards were presented: The Valedictorian Award was presented to Cayla Fappiano for maintaining the highest grade point average during her four years at Holy Cross. Cayla is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mark Fappiano of Watertown. She graduated from St. Mary Magdalen School in Oakville. Among the numerous academic achievements during her last four years, Cayla has received the Governor’s Scholar Award, the Mathematics Medal of Honor, the Biology Medal of Honor, the Holy Cross Brothers of Holy Cross Scholarship and was a semi-finalist for the CocaCola Scholarship and a National Merit Scholar.

During her time at Holy Cross, Ms. Fappiano has been an elected member of Student Council and has co-chaired several community service projects. She continually develops her leadership skills through her participation in leadership conferences at the state, regional and national levels, such as the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership (HOBY) Conference, the Connecticut Association of Schools Student Leadership Conference, a Student Leadership Training Program (SLTP) Conference, the 2009 NFHS National Student Leadership Conference as well as being elected to the CAS Student Advisory Board for which she serves as president. She has been a member of the Holy Cross volleyball and softball teams, has earned several academic excellence awards as well as the 2009 Holy Cross Varsity Volleyball Coach’s Award and the Dale D. Hawley Leadership Award. In addition, she was named to the 2009 All-Academic NVL Volleyball team. Cayla has proven to be a valuable member of the Holy Cross community by serving as a school representative at tour sessions, orientations and open house programs. She will be attending Georgetown University in the fall.

The Salutatorian Award was presented to Emilie Terhaar for maintaining the second highest grade point average during her four years at Holy Cross.

Emilie is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Terhaar of Litchfield. Among the numerous academic achievements during her last four years, Emma received the Social Studies Medal of Honor and the National Merit Letter of Commendation.

She has developed her leadership skills by serving as Secretary and President of her class and President of Student Council, as well as serving on class committees. She has been a member of the

Holy Cross Oronoque Chapter of the National Honor Society, the Bowling Club and the Student Recruitment Team. A talented athlete, Emma has been a member of the Cross Country, Soccer and Tennis teams. Emma has volunteered her time to many community service projects, including Halloween Happening, St. Vincent DePaul Shelter, the Mt. Tom Association and the Brandywine Assisted Living facility. Emma is a graduate of St. Peter-St. Francis School in Torrington. She will be attending the University of Notre Dame in the fall.

The Sister Margaret Bannon, CND Service Award is presented annually to the senior girl who has demonstrated outstanding service to the school community. Cayla Fappiano was the recipient of this award.

The Holy Cross Fathers’ Club Award is given each year to the senior boy who has demonstrated the most service to the school community. The award was presented this year to Connor Prince, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Prince of Watertown.

He is a graduate of Swift Middle School and will be attending King’s College in the fall.

The Holy Cross Mothers’ Club Award is presented annually to the senior boy who has demonstrated the most academic improvement from freshman to senior year. This year’s recipient was Patsy Casalino, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Casalino of Oakville. He is a graduate of St. Mary Magdalen School in Oakville and will be attending Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in the fall.

The Monsignor Henry E. Flanagan Award is presented each year to the female student who has improved the most academically from freshman to senior year. This award was presented to Breyanna Monti, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Monti of Waterbury. She is a graduate of Lighthouse Christian Academy in Waterbury and will be attending Naugatuck Valley Community College in the fall.

Reunions

he Class of 1980 held its 30 year reunion in the Alix Family Gallery at Holy Cross on October 9, 2010.

The Class of 1985 celebrated its 25 year reunion at the Watertown Golf Club on November 13, 2010. The Class of 1990 held its 20 year reunion at the Crowne Plaza in Southbury on Saturday, November 27, 2010. A group of over 30 alumni from the Class of 1975 gathered at the Hills Restaurant for their annual get together organized once again by classmate Tom Porzio. All the reunions/ gatherings were well attended and a good time was had by all.

Reunion Weekend 2011 After listening to alumni feedback and having subsequent discussions, Holy Cross will be changing the reunion format beginning this year. We will be celebrating with all alumni during the Thanksgiving weekend. We feel that a Holy Cross Reunion Weekend is a positive response to your collective input and will take our alumni activities to the next level. Mr. Mike Phelan ’89 became our new Director of Alumni and Special Events this year and is directly responsible for planning and running this new event. While the weekend will be open to all alumni, we recognize the importance of not losing individual class identity. Specific reunion years will be highlighted

Regional Events

Alumni Children Easter Egg Hunt

e held our first ever alumni regional event in Washington, DC in October at the Old Ebbitt Grill, which was highly recommended by Robert Livermore ’91. It was a fun night and the alumni had a good time reconnecting with one another and catching up with President Tim McDonald.

The Boston alumni regional event was held at the Union Club of Boston in October 28, 2010. The event was cohosted by Cary Razza Fappiano ’85, Mike Phelan ’89, Brian Koeller ’81, Tom Holloway ’86, and Meghan McDonald ’96. It was a beautiful venue to meet the alumni working and living in the area.

he Advancement Team hosted the Annual Alumni Children Easter Egg Hunt in April. Keith Alan and the Easter Bunny entertained the children with music and games. There was face painting, dancing, crafts and more. Approximately 115 children enjoyed finding the Easter eggs hidden beneath the Easter grass.

The student volunteers enjoyed themselves almost as much as the children. The morning provided an opportunity for over 60 alumni to reconnect while their children participated in the various activities.

The New York City alumni regional event was held once again at the New York Athletic Club on Thursday, June 9th.

The event was hosted by Robert Greene ’79 and sponsored

by Frank Monteiro ’88. Br. James Kane, CSC joined President McDonald in chatting with approximately 30 alumni from the city.
