a foundation for the next century As Hawai‘i Community Foundation (HCF) begins its next century of service to the community, we do so as part of a longstanding tradition of generosity that started with the charitable trusts established by the ali‘i in the 19th century. The act of helping others is woven deeply into the fabric that binds this community and is key to keeping it strong. Our achievements over the last 100 years have provided HCF with a platform to strengthen our leadership role in the community and deliver even greater impact going forward. This promise requires that we reimagine ourselves as a community foundation whose primary asset is knowledge, and whose primary responsibility is to utilize the expertise, systems, and relationships we’ve built over a century of experience to positively impact the future of Hawai‘i. From creating scholarship funds that change the lives of students, to organizing funders and civic leaders to tackle major issues of our day, to helping nonprofit organizations achieve even greater results,

the Hawai‘i Community Foundation is a nexus for good people, good ideas, and good results. Behind the more than $45 million HCF distributed across Hawai‘i in 2015 are remarkable stories about the impact of philanthropy on transforming lives and improving communities. Shortly after the first U.S. community foundation was founded on the mainland, the Hawaiian Trust Company (Bank of Hawaii) formed the Hawaiian Foundation; its purpose was to distribute funds that were not tied to someone’s will or trust to those in need. Renamed Hawai‘i Community Foundation in 1987, and reorganized with multiple trustees and a Board of Governors, HCF began to take shape as the organization we know and respect today. A Century of Generosity ge n e ro si t y i s a h a l l m a r k of t h i s c om m u n i t y The desire to make a meaningful difference inspired the formation of the Hawai‘i Community Foundation 100 years ago and continues to motivate individuals, families, and organizations whose generosity is having an impact. One person’s gesture sparks a whole community to get involved. One family’s tradition of giving back gets passed down to future generations. A group of concerned individuals comes together around a problem too big to solve alone. To honor a century of support for important causes in Hawai‘i — and reflect the diversity and reach of our donors and clients — HCF is planting one breadfruit tree for each of our 750+ charitable funds. The trees in this Giving Grove throughout the state, like the acts of generosity they symbolize, provide sustenance to the community year after year.

Connecting Good Intentions with Good Outcomes

they have to “give back to others without the same advantages.” After developing the Kūki‘o Golf and Beach Club on the Kona coast, BJ and his development partners approached the Hawai‘i Community Foundation to create a fund that would benefit the lives of people on Hawai‘i Island. Initially seeded by the developers, the Kūki‘o Community Fund is now led by Kūki‘o residents and local community leaders who serve on an Advisory Committee. The fund gives homeowners who aren’t from Hawai‘i the chance to better understand and support the surrounding community. “Many of Kūki‘o’s residents are looking for ways to connect with the island they’ve come to love,” explains Kobayashi. One of those is Dawn Zierk who, with her husband David, moved to Kūki‘o from the Bay Area a few years ago with their two young sons, and has since become immersed in the greater community. Dawn remarks,

“I’ve learned so much about the history, the people, the issues in our community; there is great work going on here and people are passionate about helping others.” While member support of the Kūki‘o Community Fund has grown over 300% in the past three years, many of them — including the Zierks — also give alongside the fund, directing resources to a particular project or program that speaks to them. “One of the things we like,” said Dawn about Hawai‘i Island, “is that our dollars go further here; you can actually see a real impact … and there’s no better feeling than that.”

Leaving to Learn; Returning to Teach

The Sorensons and the Galizas share pride in Jester’s accomplishments.

When Jester Galiza returned to Campbell High School with Teach for America, he was looked upon by his students as one of them — living proof of what is possible for a Filipino kid who grew up in ‘Ewa Beach and graduated from Campbell. “The narrative isn’t always positive when you come from where I did,” admitted Jester. His parents immigrated to Hawai‘i with Jester’s four older siblings. While his mom had dreams of becoming a nurse, she, like her husband, dropped out of high school to work. And work they did — two jobs each, including as housekeepers with Outrigger Hotels and Resorts.

Recognizing the sacrifices his parents made, Jester dedicated himself to learning. One teacher painted a path for what high school could be for him: student council, AP classes, valedictorian, Ivy League school. “All of those came to pass,” recalls Jester, “and I owe that vision to Mr. Oshiro.” Thanks to the multiple scholarships he received, Jester graduated from Dartmouth College with a major in biology. One of those scholarships holds special meaning for the Galiza family, because the funds from donors Perry and Sally Sorenson were dedicated to the children of Outrigger employees. “In my 15 years with Outrigger,” said Perry, who retired in 2005 as Senior VP and COO, “I was inspired by many hardworking people providing good lives for their families.” Jester Galiza continues to forge a good and meaningful life — he earned a Master of Education from University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa and will be applying to medical school. Jester knows he wants to work with rural and low-income communities in Hawai‘i: “If I can have an impact anywhere, I want it to be here.”

A Community Need, a Community Solution Jody Payne returned to the Islands in search of the old Hawai‘i she fondly remembered — and found it on Lāna‘i. In 2002, as part-time residents, Jody and her former husband Ted Mallon were looking for a way to support their island community and approached the Hawai‘i Community Foundation. “We wanted the people of Lāna‘i to decide,” said Jody, “instead of being told what they should do with the funds.” HCF’s Lorraine Tamaribuchi learned about the community’s desire for a Women’s Wellness Center and recognized that there was a good fit: “The intent of the family making the gift was our constant guide,” she recalls. Seed money from the couple’s KOA Fund helped launch a committee to establish the Lāna‘i Women’s Center. Co-chairs Phyllis McOmber (now deceased) and Jackie Woolsey, along with five other longtime island residents, devoted themselves to the vision. With the early help of the Moloka‘i Women’s Center, along with volunteer and funding support from many sources, “Jody’s Place” was opened in the heart of Lāna‘i City in 2005 … transforming a one-bedroom apartment into a gathering place where women of

After an invitation from Senator Inouye’s office to apply to become a Federally Qualified Health Center, and with community momentum to add services, the Lāna‘i Community Health Center now serves not only women but also their families. A brand new facility now sits on the site of the original Jody’s Place and embodies the community spirit of its visionaries. To Executive Director Diana Shaw, “Our Health Center is an example of what can be accomplished when individuals put their dreams into action.”

With a donor advised fund, like the one that helped to launch the Lāna‘i Community Health Center, donors can recommend where and when to give grants, making a difference in ways they care about. HCF is currently the trusted steward for more than 200 donor advised funds across the state.

Thursdays are an exciting day for kūpuna and keiki on Kaua‘i. That’s when a group of volunteers for Mobile Munchies shows up at Lihue Lutheran Church to assemble 400 snack bags. Inside each is a peanut butter sandwich, raisins, carrots, a granola bar, chips and a drink … along with the goodwill of many people. Since its inception in 2005, more than 172,000 bags have been delivered to children at five different sites on Kaua‘i, according to Linda Garrett, whose idea it was. “The children can hardly wait for their bags,” said Aunty Lovey, of the Boys & Girls Club in Kapa‘a, “and for some of them, it is the most nutritious food they will get all day.” That such a simple concept can have such a big impact is something that impressed Sam Pratt, who serves on the Advisory Committee of the Annie Sinclair Knudsen Memorial Fund, which helps to fund Mobile Munchies and hundreds of other causes across the island.

“Serving on the Knudsen Fund Advisory Committee is not only a huge honor,” said Sam, a kama‘āina of Kaua‘i, “it’s also been eye opening for me to see the vast array of needs and challenges in our community. I wish we could help everybody.” That same wish is what motivated Ruth Knudsen Hanner, in 1987, when she created an endowed fund in honor of her grandmother, Annie Sinclair Knudsen. The fund, which has distributed $8.75M on Kaua‘i and is part of HCF’s FLEX grants program, is an example of how a legacy gift from one person can have a transformative impact over decades, in big ways and small ones.

s t e wa r d s of t h e com m u n i t y HCF’s capacity to serve the community is tied directly to its ability to preserve and enhance the financial assets it stewards. Towards this end, an Investment Review Committee, comprised of directors who are knowledgeable in investment and financial matters, with the assistance of an independent investment monitor and HCF staff, oversees HCF’s investment activities. By declaration of trust, HCF manages active relationships with three local banks. Hawai‘i Community Foundation also utilizes several other investment firms whose strategies are consistent with HCF’s investment policy.
