189 Hawaii nonprofits receive $5.2 million in funds for the year Posted: Apr 05, 2018 11:22 AM HSTUpdated: Apr 05, 2018 11:22 AM HST
189 high-performing nonprofits across Hawaii have been awarded a total of $5.2 million in unrestricted funds for the year through the FLEX Grants Program at Hawaii Community Foundation. With unrestricted funds, the organization has full control in determining how best to use the financial aid for their operation. “Hawai‘i’s high-performing nonprofits have a tremendous impact in our community. These organizations deliver much needed services and programs across the state, when they’re performing at their best, Hawai‘i’s people and communities are the true winners,” said Micah Kane, HCF president & CEO. “What makes the FLEX Grants Program unique is that it allows the nonprofit to decide how best to use the funds to support the organization’s mission, goals and priorities.” As part of it's Advancing Nonprofit Excellence Initiative, the HCF's FLEX Grants Program was created in 2013 to maximize donors in support of nonprofits that achieve successful results, and have a strong impact on the community. “There’s been times when I’ve had to decide whether to cut staff or decrease membership because most of our funding is restricted to program costs,” said Susun White, executive director of Pa‘ia Youth & Cultural Center, a FLEX Grant awardee. “It’s not just nice to have flexible funding to spend on basic operating costs, it’s crucial to keeping the doors open for our kids.” Click here to see a full list of the 2017 FLEX Grants Program grantees. “We appreciate all of the donors who make the FLEX Grants Program and other grants and scholarships a reality. Over 100 generous people including current and past donors, as well as community members who contributed their time, are helping to make our communities stronger through FLEX grants,” added Kane. •
