Pony Tails OCTOBER 2026 HALLOWEEN EDITION

LETTER FROM ALICE Hello Readers! It's me, Alice the Pony, and welcome to our spooky Halloween edition of Pony Tails! October is one of my favourite months. The leaves are bright orange and gold, pumpkins are everywhere, and Halloween is just around the corner. While costumes and candy are exciting, it's also a great time to remember that horses can sometimes be surprised by unfamiliar decorations, masks, and spooky sounds. This month we'll learn about a striking horse breed, enjoy a Halloween adventure, discover fun horsey facts, and test our skills with a Halloween-themed activity. Remember to be kind, stay safe, and enjoy all the autumn fun this season brings. Lots of love, Alice the Pony

HORSE BREED OF THE MONTH: APPALOOSA

The Appaloosa is one of the most colourful horse breeds in the world. These horses are famous for their spotted coats, although not every Appaloosa has spots. The breed was developed by the Nez Perce people of North America, who carefully bred horses for speed, strength, and endurance. Today, Appaloosas are popular trail, sport, and family horses. Their unique appearance makes them easy to recognize.

FUN FACTS Appaloosas can have spots all over their bodies. No two Appaloosa coat patterns are exactly alike. They are known for being intelligent and versatile. Appaloosas can compete in many disciplines including jumping, western riding, and trail riding. Their spotted coats make them look extra festive during Halloween season!

STORY FEATURE: Alice and the Pumpkin Trail Mystery One cool October morning, Alice was helping decorate Pony School for Halloween. There were pumpkins by every fence, colourful leaves on the ground, and smiling scarecrows standing near the paddocks. As Alice trotted toward the barn, she noticed something unusual. A trail of tiny pumpkins stretched across the yard. "Who left these here?" Alice wondered. She followed the pumpkin trail past the riding ring, through the orchard, and all the way to the back pasture. Waiting there was her friend Maple the Appaloosa. "Surprise!" Maple neighed. Behind her stood all the Pony School students beside a giant pumpkin patch. "We planned a Halloween harvest party!" said Maple. The friends spent the day decorating pumpkins, playing games, and sharing treats. As the sun began to set, Alice smiled. Halloween wasn't just about costumes and candy. It was about friendship, kindness, and having fun together. And that made it the best surprise of all.

Activity of the Month: Word Scramble

Horsey Facts of the Month: HALLOWEEN Facts πŸŽƒ Horses can sometimes be startled by decorations they haven't seen before.

πŸ‚ Falling leaves blowing across a trail may catch a horse's attention.

πŸ‘‚ Horses rely heavily on their hearing to notice unusual sounds. 🎭 If a rider wears a costume around horses, it's important to introduce it slowly.

🧑 Bright orange pumpkins are safe for many horses as an occasional treat when fed appropriately by an adult.

πŸŒ™ Horses do not see in complete darkness, but they can see better than humans in low light.

🍁 Autumn weather often makes trail rides especially enjoyable. BONUS FACT

🐴 An Appaloosa's spots can look different throughout its life as its coat changes with the seasons!
