Horse/Pony Breed of the Month: FRIESAN

Thank you to Esther, one of my beloved readers, for this month’s breed recommendation - the Friesan! This Dutch horse is a strong, sturdy draught breed featuring feathered legs, fancy movement, and a striking black coat colour. Traditionally speaking, they do not have any leg or face markings. Originating in a Northern part of The Netherlands, this historic breed was once used for agriculture. Nowadays, it is now more commonly seen in driving and riding disciplines.

Story Feature: Tiny Ponies Can Do Big Things

SURF’S UP - flip to the next page to read about a pony who’s brave while riding the waves.

Tiny Ponies Can Do Big Things

On a sunny little island called Coral Cove, there lived a pony named Sea Biscuit Sea Biscuit was not like the other ponies. While the others loved trotting through flower fields and munching sweet clover, Sea Biscuit loved the ocean

Every morning, Sea Biscuit would gallop down to the beach with a bright green surfboard tucked under one hoof “Waves are just water jumps,” Sea Biscuit liked to say. “And I was born to ride them!”

The seagulls laughed

“The water is too deep!”

“The waves are too big!”

“You’re too small!”

But Sea Biscuit only smiled

One sunny morning, Sea Biscuit paddled out into the ocean Tiny silver fish zipped beneath the board, and the salty breeze tickled Sea Biscuit’s mane. Then came the biggest wave she had ever seen WHOOSH! It rose high into the sky like a giant liquid mountain Sea Biscuit tremored with fear The seagulls gasped Even the crabs stopped scuttling.

But Sea Biscuit took a deep breath and whispered, “Tiny ponies can do big things.” The wave lifted Sea Biscuit up up UP! For one magical moment, Sea Biscuit shredded across the shining water like a shooting star The board skimmed the wave perfectly

Splish!

Splash!

Swiiiiish!

The dolphins leaped beside Sea Biscuit in delight “You’re doing it!” they cheered.

Sea Biscuit guided her board all the way to shore, where the other ponies stood with wide, amazed eyes “That looked incredible!” said Shelly the pony “Can you teach us?” asked Star “Maybe the ocean isn’t so scary after all,” said Cora

So every afternoon after that, Sea Biscuit became Coral Cove’s very first surfing teacher. Soon the beach was filled with laughing ponies wobbling on surfboards, tumbling into waves, and cheering for one another And whenever one of her students felt nervous, Sea Biscuit would smile and remind them:

“Tiny ponies can do big things”

The End.

HORSEY FACTS OF THE MONTH DIVE INTO LEARNING!

Yes... Horses Can Swim!

Did you know this? Horses can paddle out into the water without having to be taught - they are natural swimmers! It’s basically for trotting like them... but underwater.

Yay or Neigh

It’s important to note that, even though they can swim, not all horses enjoy it. Depending on the breed, the horse’s exposure, their temperament, and various other factors, they may go in the water readily or strongly avoid it.

Benefits of Hydrotherapy

“Hydrotherapy”, or Swimming Therapy, is a commonly accepted rehabilitation technique for horses. It allows them to improve their muscle, tendon, and bone strength without heavy impact.
