HBRA Housing Hall of Fame

Alan Hanbury Alan Hanbury is the President of House of Hanbury Builders, Inc. which he cofounded with his brother Bob in 1976. Alan is a thirdgeneration builder following his father, who was a past president, and grandfather who was also a founding member of the Home Builders & Remodelers Association of Central Connecticut in 1944. They watched their father and grandfather’s businesses ride the cyclical ups and downs of the new home construction industry and decided they wanted to start and build their careers in the remodeling industry.

Alan received his Bachelor of Science in Management and then his MBA from RPI in 1975 before starting their business. He is a self-described learning junkie and has attended every IBS since 1979 and every Remodelers Show, but one, since 1991 and more than 25 of the JLC conferences across the country. Not only does Alan attend these events, but he is often a featured instructor at these industry leading events.

Alan has developed his own classes on Margin and Markup, Budgeting, Defensive Estimating, Job Costing and many more.

Alan is an integral member of the NAHB team that creates from scratch and modifies the designation courses to make sure they are relevant, current and contain accurate information.

The company has performed over 3,500 jobs specializing in tasteful additions, classic kitchens, stylish and safe bathrooms

and much more throughout central Connecticut. Alan quickly saw the opportunity for business growth in the Aging in Place market. Not only did House of Hanbury become one of the leading Aging in Place contractors in Connecticut, but Alan also quickly became one of the leading national experts on home improvements for the aging segment.

Alan is a teacher for the Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS) designation across the country at locals and construction educational events.

Alan is very involved in the NAHB, the HBRA of Connecticut and the HBRA of Central Connecticut having reached Senior Life Director status at NAHB and was a founding member of the local Remodelers Council in 1989. He is also credentialed with designations provided by NAHB earning his CGR in 1990, CAPS in 2002, CGP in 2005 and GMR in 2012. Among his honors his firm was selected as local and state Remodeler of the Year in 1991, Big 50 1995, GMR of the Year, NAHB Builder/Remodeler Educator of the Year, Local Remodeler of the Year and the Foundation award from his local. Alan has been published in countless industry magazines and is often called upon for expert testimony and advice.

Alan retired from active remodeling at the end of 2020 and is currently providing consulting services, mentoring and teaching in all areas of construction business management for remodeling professionals.
