The house had a living room, dining room and kitchen on the main floor, along with three bedrooms and one bathroom.

There was also a finished basement with a full bath that was added by a previous owner.

The plan for the remodel was to bring the house into the 21st century by modernizing and

Checklist for Finding and Hiring a Builder or Remodeler Use this checklist to help you select a home builder or home remodeler to work on or build your home.

• Contact the Home Builders & Remodelers Association of Central Connecticut for the names of member builders and remodelers. Search their database of members at hbracentralct.com. You can also ask family, friends or coworkers for recommendations.

• Make sure the builder or home remodeler has a permanent business location and a good reputation with local banks and suppliers.

• Find out how long they have been in the building business. It usually takes three to five years to establish a financially sound business. You want to make sure they will be around after the construction is complete to service any warranties.

• Verify that your remodeler is an EPA Lead-Safe Certified Renovator if you are planning work in a pre-1978 home that will disturb more than six square feet of painted surfaces inside the home or 20 square feet on the exterior of the home.

Top Design Trends for 2018 Whether you’re looking to buy a new home, thinking about renovating your current one, or you’re just interested in what’s new in home design, here are some the biggest trends that you’ll see dominating in 2018.

Open but defined floor plans.

Instead of one large, undefined space, open floor plans will evolve to include more definition in 2018, whether it’s by shifting materials, adding columns, or changing the ceiling height. This way, you can still get the airiness of an open floor plan while giving each section its own definition and style.

You’ll be seeing this trend a lot this year, particularly on sin-gle-family homes. It gives the impression of bringing the past and future together into one cohesive idea, making homes seem modern and sleek without sacrificing a warm, natural feel.
