W

hen my son first said that he wanted to try Velocity, I was taken back. He's one of those kids that I would consider to be all heart, not because of his talent but because of his size. At 13 years old, he's tipping the scales at about 85 lbs in a football league that maxes out at 150 lbs. Next year, he'll be in High School where of course there is no weight limit. So considering all the facts, and watching my son develop a real passion for sports I agreed to help him pursue his passion for football, track and basketball, both as his father and coach (football). Yet, I was still hesitant because I thought Velocity was always something for those “bigger” kids.

We made a call to Mo Farha at Velocity of Ann Arbor and Canton, MI and set up a day for him to try it out. I know I was more nervous than he was because of the unexpected. When we arrived, we were treated with first class service.

The gentlemen behind the counter spoke directly to my son about expectations and goals without giving the old salesman speech. Shortly after, the class started. As a parent, you're allowed to sit in the all glass observation room and watch as the class begins.

Watching the young men in the class workout, all of whom were veteran students, was at first a little intimidating to me as I feared my son wouldn't be able to keep up. But then something happened. During a break in the class, my son walked past the observation room and as we caught eyes he gave me the thumbs up. I cannot describe the feeling of pride and elation I felt knowing this was a good decision.

At the end of the class we weren't pressured to sign some life-long commitment that “gyms” twist your arm to sign.

They encouraged us to think about it as this is a serious decision and Velocity wants only the “serious” to apply. It is for those athletes who are serious about becoming better and separating themselves from the pack. With Velocity you get the privilege of working with a personal training coach whom will work with you on your speed, strength and agility. Velocity is not a gym; it is a training center. A training center for athletes.

So ask yourself if your child has that passion to be better and they show up for sports to play not play around, consider the obvious, consider Velocity.

he 2008 High School Football season is here and with that comes the promise of new and exciting adventures for all teams in Southeastern Michigan. During the course of this year’s football season, Phenom will give schools and members of the community the opportunity to vote for the 2008 Phenom Football Athlete of the Year. At the conclusion of the season, Phenom will announce two winners, one elected by the media (best overall performance) and the other elected by the general public (most votes). Each winner will receive a trophy (as well as other acknowledgments, with the media elected winner having the Phenom Athlete of the Year award named after them.

f last season was Brandis Yarrington’s football coming out party, then coaches, opponents, recruiters, and fanatics better gear up for a wild ride. It took Yarrington, 13 seconds to tell the football world that he had arrived. 13 seconds to say, “I told you so.” 13 seconds to say, “Haters beware.” 13 seconds. What’s so big about 13 seconds?

Yarrington’s story begins tightly enveloped in the framework of these few seconds where something very magical happened. The Ann Arbor Pioneers began their season last year with a thunderous curtain call, (their first game against Novi was delayed 2 hours because of severe weather).

Head Coach Jeremy Gold prepped his players just before kick off acknowledging that the weather set the scene for a perfect opening.

“This is football weather,” Gold yelled while the sea of white and purple jerseys and helmets looked upon their new leader. “This is why we play football- so go out there and make something happen.”

He spoke and they listened.

After kick off, the Pioneers’ offense lined up with Nader Furha under center and Yarrington in the slot far right, with the ball nestled softly on the 20-yard line. The ball is hiked; Furha to Yarrington on a short bubble pass 80 yards and 13 seconds later pay dirt (touchdown).

While some would consider this ceremonious moment to be the pentacle of someone’s football career, Yarrington doesn’t see it that way. “... I am just humble and I don’t take things that I accomplish too much to heart,” proclaims Yarrington when asked about how he perceives his talent. “At this point I am used to being one of the best athletes on the field at all times, so I know what I am capable of, I just have to stay focused and do me.

As for Brandis, he’s been playing his game for some time. As a 13-year-old quarterback, receivers, defensive backs and kick returner for the Washtenaw Junior Wolverine’s Yarrington said “Hello World,” a long time ago. After the conclusion of an epic game verses Dearborn, in which he was responsible for over 600 yards of offense, fans from the other team gathered in a huddle near the edge of the field to request Brandis’ autograph. It was that game when people in Southeastern Michigan began to take notice.

Yarrington is not alone is his star status. As a 12 year old, he played youth football with highly touted recruits Jeremy Jackson (Ann Arbor Huron), Nick Hill (Chelsea) and talented RB/DB Julian Foster (Ann Arbor Huron). Just imagine having a high school team comprised of these athletes could give any coach nightmares. “ Originally, it looked as though we would all be attending the same high school, but for a multitude of reasons that didn’t happen. It would be one of the greatest things to play with those guys again, they (Jackson and Hill) are both All-State prospects and are great off the field guys as well.”

THE POWER WITHIN Brandis’ on field talents and gifts don’t come easy. He works tirelessly during the off-season preparing for the next challenge.

Over the years, Yarrington, with the aid of his father, Greg, has spent the time and the effort working to become a better athlete. The eldest has a multitude of football knowledge that the younger benefitted from. Greg is also a former Pioneer, who not only possesses football intelligence but, an impressive resume of college degrees, from Cornell, Yale, State University of NY and the University of Michigan.

“My dad keeps me motivated by assigning me to certain camps and combines and workouts which are vital to me. I’ve attended many football camps and programs, ran track this spring to stay in tip-top shape. I feel I am extremely prepared for what is ahead.”

Brandis has turned some heads at combines this summer. In June, he attended the Football University minicamp in Chicago, Illinois. Athletes from as far out as California were in attendance. Yarrington was nominated for MVP of the three day program.

Brandis’ father joined him on the trip. “ Perry Williams (instructor) told Brandis that he has the skills but it is up to him to take advantage of the opportunity. He told him that to be the best he must work twice as hard as everyone else. He must become faster and smarter on and off the field. He emphasized to Brandis if his coach asked him to run ten 200 meter sprints then Brandis should run twenty. He told Brandis that this is what he did to get

ahead. To be the best, you must do more than expected regardless if it is football, life, and work,” offered Greg.

As a result of his performance during the camp, Yarrington was invited to the Top Gun performance camp. He was one of 40 Football University camp attendees selected out of 2,000 to attend the Top Gun Showcase Camp in Florida.

While in Florida, he did more than hold his own. At least Williams, the former 10 year NFL cornerback for the New York Giants, thought so.

Williams, a coach at the Top Gun camp as well as FBU thought, “Yarrington had the quickest feet in the camp.... he was physical and not afraid to play bump and run against the bigger receivers, ” according to Rival.com’s evaluation of Brandis.

His work doesn’t end there.

Yarrington has worked out individually with Stan Edwards, former University of Michigan Running back and father of Brayland Edwards. He also has an off-season program that includes working out at Velocity Sports in nearby Canton, MI. He has the benefit of being coached by someone who has strong NFL ties and tons of football experience in Jeremy Gold. He is the younger brother of Ian Gold, former University of Michigan standout and NFL star. Gold is in his second year of coaching at Pioneer.

Gold has rightfully labeled Brandis as a special player.

Although filled with excitement, last season had its share of disappointments; major disappointments. The Pioneers were forced to forfeit their first two victories because

the team unknowingly used an ineligible player. A season that started off with promise, ended with them trying to dig themselves out of a hole.

“The forfeits brought our team’s energy and confidence level down a devastating amount. All momentum we had -disappeared. I continued to play at the highest level I could, so personally it did not impact my play, but as a team it was huge.”

With offensive weapons like Nader Furrha, Jerry Clayton and Ricky Griffin the sky is the limit for the Pioneers.

Furrha, entering his senior season should excel at quarterback this year leading the Pioneers’ attack. Both Brandis and Nader are seen as dual threats, albeit complimentary.

“It adds to my game (Playing with a QB like Nader). It may take away on the stat sheet, but it allows me to stay a threat. All the attention is not on me when you have a player like Nader behind the center every snap.

Fans of Pioneer football are ready for an encore performance from Yarrington. Although, an encore is not what he wants.

“I want to be all-state at DB,” says Brandis.

The race brought together the power of sport and music to inspire and connect runners from every corner of the planet.

Participants in this unprecedented event experienced an exclusive music performance by some of today' top artists in each of the 25 designated race cities. In Los Angeles, nine-time Grammy Award winning artist Kanye West headlined the runs' post race concert for the grand finale of the 25city Nike+ Human Race.

Runners tooke to the streets passing the city's most famous landmarks before ending at the LA Coliseum to see West take the stage.

Through injury Julian Foster has learned about life without sports, and how it has made him a better young man and athlete.

ulian Foster has fallen in love with football; to say simply that, does not give his experience any justice.

Foster, a Senior student -athlete for Ann Arbor Huron River Rats, has a special gift for carrying the ball, as a downhill runner he posses a unique blend of speed and power that are uncommon attributes for a player of his size. At 5’ 8” and 175lbs Foster’s best time in the 40 is a 4.51. This season Foster will start at DB and share the ball carrying duties at Halfback.

Prior to the injury, Foster treated football as necessary evil to stay in shape for hoops.

The Injury- No Pain No Gain "During AAU tryouts for Juniors-to-be Common Bond Basketball club, I leaped up to

attempt to block a lay-up. I missed the block and as I came down, I landed with my right leg fully extended," said Foster of his injury during an online interview.

"At the time I had suffered a few hyper extensions to the knee before so I thought it was just one of those (hyper extensions). The thing that was different about this one was the nasty pop that came with the landing. I knew something was different. It was a lot more painful than any of the injuries I had suffered to the knee. I knew there was something wrong with my knee, but at the time I would’ve never suspected I had torn a ligament. It was all new to me."

Foster has, in the past, always considered himself to be more of a basketball player than a football player.

With five months of rehab at Dominos Farms in Ann Arbor, MI Foster dedicated himself to regaining the full use of his injured right leg.

What started out as a promising High School football career paused abruptly, when Julian tore his ACL just before his junior season. As freshmen, the Ann Arbor Huron (River Rats) running back rushed

"The first six weeks of the program were the toughest. I had absolutely no strength in my right leg, and the goal was to get all the strength back so I had to really put in work. At least two hours a day was put towards either

“I decided that now that I had this knee injury, all sports had to go to the side and I had to focus on getting back into shape. Even though I wasn’t a part of the team, I had close friends (on the team) that visited me after surgery. I made sure I came out and watched all their games. As I watched these games, this is where my love for football developed, and basketball was just a thing of the past. At first, I was really disappointed that I couldn’t participate in the summer basketball league.

This was what I needed to do to show the coach (basketball) what I could do. As football season approached I realized how much I missed the game and what I used to do on the field. This is when I learned within myself that I was truly a football player. ”

STARS & STRIPES Olympic Gold Medalist Hope Solo Hope Solo Event: Women' Soccer Position: Goal Keeper Hometown: Richland, Washington College: University of Washington

U.S. women' goalkeeper Hope Solo loves just about any outdoor activity, but all of them these days take a back seat to her main outdoor sport soccer.

A starter for the USA at every age level of the National Teams programs, Hope debuted for the full National Team in 2000, when she was in Olympic Residency Training Camp. She played five matches for the USA in 2002, starting three, but did not play again for the full National Team until 2005, when she took over the top goalkeeper spot.

The Richland, Wash. native trained with the USA in 2004 during Olympic Residency Camp and was named the alternate goalkeeper on the Olympic Team, traveling to Greece.

In 2006, Hope played in 18 matches, going 14-0-4, and started all three matches at the Four Nations Tournament in China, shutting out opponents three times. She went on to start three of four matches at the Algarve Cup (two shutouts). The only goal given up against France in a 4-1 win at the Algarve Cup ended her streak of 1,054 minutes without allowing a goal from the run of play.

On the pro scene, Hope was taken in the first round of the 2003 WUSA Draft by the Philadelphia Charge. Though she battled early season injuries, she played in eight games and had a 1.25 GAA. She also played in the Swedish First Division in 2004 with Goteborg and in the French First Division with Olympique Lyonnaise in 2005.

A four-time All-Pac-10 selection in college, Hope finished her career as Washington's all-time leader in shutouts (18), saves (325) and GAA (1.02). She was named an NCAA All-American as a sophomore, junior and senior, and in high school set a conference single-season record with 38 goals as a senior and was named a two-time Parade AllAmerican.

Love of the outdoors aside, Hope aspires to work with inner city kids to help them get involved with organized sport and positive pastimes. She is an ultra-competitive ping-pong and Fussball player, and was rarely beaten at FIFA 2006 on the PlayStation.

Now the Packers and the rest of the free world can get on with the business of football.

The mainstream media would have you believe that Bret Favre, and only Bret Favre was solely responsible for the success of the Packers in ‘07; thank the Heavens that Phenom is not mainstream. Now don’t get me wrong, I agree with most that Bret is one of the best quarterbacks to ever line up under center in the history of the NFL. But as Bret Favre (a) told Bret Favre (b) “it’s time to hang up the cleats.”

Lost in this three ring circus, is the rest of the fellas who made it to the NFC Championship game last season. players like Greg Jennings.

Jennings, who is entering his third season with the Pack is a true definition of a Phenom. Crowned with the namesake of Superman in High School, Jennings is on the fast track to quietly become one of the NFL’s elite wide outs.

reg Jennings is a humble man. Jennings knows that where he is and how he arrived are all a result of hard work, dedication, faith and his strong family values. Jennings recently was a guest speaker at High School skill and development camp in Ann Arbor, Michigan when Phenom caught up to the Green Bay Packer.

“I want to show these kids that if you want something out of life, there is a right way to accomplishing it,” said Jennings.

Jennings, a second round pick in the 2006 NFL draft out of Western Michigan University a bit of an anomaly in today’s NFL. While most sports enthusiast are used to reading, hearing and watching the tragic stories of NFL players gone bad, Jennings is a break from the has a strong religious background cultivated by his father Greg Sr. The eldest Jennings is a Pastor in native Kalamazoo, MI. Greg, who is married to his lifelong sweetheart, has strong family bonds.

“I’m a living example that if you want for what you want, you can have it. I’m here because these young men need to be shown a different way of how professional athletes live their lives. I understand that being on the field requires a bit of showmanship and flair, but it should never translate to who you are as a person. As professional athletes we have a personal responsibility to everyone who endorses us. I’m not talking about the shoe contract. I’m talking about Joe Somebody who watches you on televison or the kids who want your autograph.”

Jennings was invited to speak at the Jeremy Gold Ann Arbor Pioneer Football Camp. Gold, who is the younger brother of former NFL linebacker Ian Gold, is a first cousin of Jennings.

At the conclusion of the second day of the skill camp, Jennings spoke with the over one hundred attendees about his life as a rising NFL star, father, husband and son.

High school career Jennings attended Kalamazoo Central High School and was all conference in three sports—football, basketball and track. Jennings played wide receiver, running back, outside linebacker and defensive back as a three-time letterman for the football team. He was listed 11th on the "Fab 50" rankings of the Detroit Free Press as a senior. Jennings finished seventh in voting for Mr. Basketball of Michigan and scored 52 points in a losing effort against Benton Harbor as a senior.

College career Greg Jennings attended Western Michigan University. He finished his career there with 238 receptions for 3539 yards and 39 touchdowns. Greg was a red-shirt freshmen. He missed 8 games due to a broken ankle bone. In the 8 games he did play, he caught 10 passes for 138 yards. In 2003, he was second on the Broncos with 56 catches for 1,050 yards and 14 touchdowns. He finished the 2003 season with 1,734 all-purpose yards. He was named to the second team All-Mid American team. In 2004, he led the Broncos with 74 catches for 1,092 yards and 11 touchdowns. He tallied 1,415 all-purpose yards. He was named to the All-MAC team.

In 2005, he had his best season to date. He had 98 catches, and led the nation in catches per game, with 8.91. He had 1,259 yards with 14 touchdowns. His 5,093 all-purpose yards is a WMU record, and ranks 8th in MAC history. Greg became only the 11th player to gain over 1,000 yards three times in college career.

Green Bay Packers The Packers signed Jennings to a four-year contract on July 25, 2006. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported the deal is worth $2.85 million and includes a $1.24 million signing bonus.

Named the starting wide receiver, along with Donald Driver, which put Robert Ferguson in the slot, for his first professional regular season game Green Bay Packers by head coach Mike McCarthy on September 2nd, 2006. Jennings led the NFL in receiving yardage during the 2006 preseason. He had 1 catch for 5 yards in his first game.

On September 24, 2006, he caught a 75-yard TD pass from Brett Favre against the Detroit Lions. It was Favre's 400th TD pass for his career, and he is only the second quarterback in NFL history to complete this achievement. He also recorded his first 100 yard game. He had 3 catches for 101 yds and 1 touchdown. Jennings was voted NFL Rookie of the Week for games played September 24-25, 2006, the first and only time he received this honor. Jennings was also named to the NFL All Rookie team at the end of the season.

On September 23, 2007 Jennings caught a game winning 57 yard TD pass from Favre with less than two minutes to play to help beat the San Diego Chargers 31-24 at Lambeau Field and improve the teams record to 3-0 thus far in 2007. This was Jennings 1st touchdown catch in 2007, as well as Favre's 420th career touchdown pass, tying him with Dan Marino for the most TD passes in NFL history.

A week later on September 30, 2007, during a 23-16 victory over the Minnesota Vikings, Jennings caught a 16-yard pass from Brett Favre that opened the scoring 10 minutes into the first quarter, and broke the all-time touchdown pass record Favre had shared with Dan Marino.

On October 29, 2007, Jennings caught an 82-yard touchdown pass from Favre to defeat the Denver Broncos 19-13 in overtime, tying him for the second longest overtime touchdown in NFL history.Then the following week, he caught the game winning touchdown pass that went for 60 yards to beat the Chiefs in Kansas City.

Against the Cowboys on November 29, 2007, in a game broadcast on the NFL network, Jennings hauled in the first ever touchdown pass by third-year second-string quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Jennings and running back Ryan Grant each had a touchdown during a 33-14 victory over the St. Louis Rams on December 16, 2007, making it the first time two Packers players have each scored a touchdown in the same four consecutive games.

Humb Sports MADDEN NFL 2009 EA SPORTS Everyone had an inkling that once EA put Favre on the front cover of ‘09, something would mysteriously happen to Bret.

No one could have imagined, he’d un-retire and end up taking snaps for the New York Jets. When John Madden Football was released in 1988, no one had any idea that it was the beginning of one of the best-selling series of all time. But after 20 years, tens of millions of copies sold, countless tournaments, and even a TV show, Madden is a global phenomenon. When you purchase a Madden game, you know you're going to be the beneficiary of 20 years of experience.

Fine-tuned gameplay, top-notch player animation, extraordinarily detailed playbooks, and competitive multiplayer are all series staples. This year's Madden is just what you'd expect: It doesn't take a whole lot of chances with the formula that has proven so successful in the past.

Improvements such as the additions of Cris Collinsworth as a commentator and a backtrack feature that points out and helps correct your mistakes make for a great football experience.

NCAA FOOTBALL 2009 EA SPORTS There are a number of changes that have been made to this year's game play, many of which expand the nature of the offensive game on the field.

For one thing, players will find that they are no longer trapped in animation when performing a juke or spin in this year's game. In NCAA 09, players can literally chain these moves together, spinning in one direction before spinning in the opposite direction or chaining a juke together with a hurdle to evade tacklers and break a play for additional yardage. It can be extremely satisfying to appear to be completely stopped by defenders, only to perform a couple of agile moves and weave your way through the crowd, driving the home crowd crazy. What's also cool is that you can use these maneuvers in concert with the larger holes and cutback lanes that will be made in defensive coverage to make big plays.

Your ball carriers aren't the only ones with such evasive maneuvers, either; your quarterback can attempt to fake out defenders at any moment with a pump fake from the right analog stick and get defenders to leave their feet.

DJ Invisible talks about his love of sports and music in this Q & A session with Phenom’s HB. Q. Are you a big sports fan?

A. Yeah Man I love Basketball so much I had a full court put in my backyard, I also am a tennis nut and I recently was given Golf clubs for my birthday and I can’t get enough I have a $1000 bag of clubs and a $10 skill level but im working on it.

Q. What's your favorite sport?

A. My favorite sort is still Basketball to play and watch (until my knees start hurting then I watch and talk junk) Q. College or pro?

A. College in March and Pro playoffs I like it when they are playing for their season not to end.

Q. Favorite bball team?

A. I like the Pistons I was born and raised in the "D" Q. Did you play basketball growing up?

A. All day every day Q. What kind of player are you?

A. Im about 6'3" so I liken my game to Charles Barkley but with better ball handling skills Q. How long have you been spinnin'?

A. Bout 15 years straight out of Highschool Q. What motivated you to get into hiphop?

A. I always like the music and to be honest I liked parties but couldn’t dance so the next best way to get invited to a party was to DJ Q. Did you and Xzibit sort of get into the game together or did this just happen?

A. He had been Rappin all thru High school he would call me from New Mexico and Spit his newest Rhymes over the phone once a week then when I went away to college he just hooked up with some big names in LA so when I finished school he flew me out and gave me the job as his tour DJ(we grew up together in Detroit then he Moved to New Mexico when he was nine with his Dad after his Mom Passed) Q. How'd you guys eventually hook up?

A. We are actually cousins.

Q. What's the craziest gig you've ever done?

A. There has been a ton of unforgettable shows. The one that always comes to mind is us opening for Metallica in Belgium for Seventy Thousand screaming fans at a big outdoor festival. We also did a show with Eminem in London for sixty-six Thousand folks (WOW man the screams from the crowd give you the biggest rush) Q. Now a days it seems as though sports and music collaborate in many regards, have you done any sports related events rather on Stage or on the court?

A. I have played in some celebrity basketball games, I had the opportunity to spin at the Staples Center in LA for Magic Johnson. I have also worked several International Xtreme sports events (Skiing, Motorcross, Bike & Skateboard) Q. How famous are you overseas?

A. I wouldn’t call myself famous YET! There is a good international DJ INVISIBLE following overseas I have headlined several Club tours overseas and in South America. I also frequent Australia and Asia.

A. It’s hard to describe the overseas fan other than they Love Music and they are not afraid to let you know if you are Rockin It!!! Here sometimes the crowds can be a tad tame but they will stand in the cold rain and watch you spin and love it.

Q. In the past, you've been known as a jokester what's the best prank you've pulled on anyone famous?

A. Me a jokester??? I usually just call the front desk and get crazy early wake up calls for people.

Mike Shinoda from Linkin Park and I played Xzibit and Phoenix from LP in a hoop game backstage and cheated half the game.

Q. Your cuz, Xzibit seems to be making an impression on the big screen, any plans of auditioning for some roles?

A. Yeah I would love to get on the big screen soon. I have talked to him about it so now just waiting on the right opp.

Q. Name some of the most amazing places you've been to.

A. I have touched the four corners of the globe the most amazing place I have been is Australia I love the people and everything it’s a great place to visit. I have also really enjoyed Asia Tokyo is so cool its like a ancient Future town you can see the most amazing futuristic bldg. them turn around and bump into a super old temple that was crazy.

Q. Is there a sports influence in your style of spinning?

A. I like to think of Spinning as an aerobic work out I used to be really laxed when I spun but now I’m a Ball of energy its like Spin-Bo (you know like Ty-Bo) If the people see me having fun they join right in really fast.

Q. Who's the best athlete-rapper?

A. I would have to say Shaq he had the biggest success as both a rapper with a couple gold records and several championship rings. Kobe had an album that was... Iverson tried and many other have well Chris Webber actually got some air play and his song was Hot!!! But Shaq had the most to show from his Rap and Hoop Career.

Q. If you could play for any team for one day, who would it be?

A. I would play shooting guard for the Pistons. I would get them back to the Big Show or myself to the Emergency Room!

Q. How responsible do you try to be with your music?

A. On my new card I have a Parental Advisory shirt on! I feel all parents should know what the heck their kids are listening to. You cant Blame a Rapper for your kid doing wrong or your Daughter doing wrong you have to Blame yourself for letting them listen to that Entertainment. A murderer cant Blame Rambo for making him shoot someone!

Q. Do any of your kids play sports?

A.My Sons are all Amazing on the court and on the field. I think in a few years you’ll see my eldest in the NBA my second in the NFL and the youngest is a little fish.

Q. If you had a choice would you want your kids to play sports or entertain for a living?

A. Well I don’t know I gave them all instruments and they are Rocking out in the Basement ALL the Time they started a Band and perform for the family so I just want them to be well rounded and Have FUN doing all that they do!

Q. Who was your biggest musical influence?

A. RUN DMC and MC Hammer Q. Any projects you have on the horizon?

A. Taking over the world by playing records!!! (its gonna work you watch) I have an Australian and Asia tour in the Fall Q. Where can we catch you on tour next?

A. I’ll be doing some local Clubs this Summer then off to Florida and back overseas. Gotta stay busy while busy is available. you never know when its all gonna end so I have to make the most of it and do it REAL BIG all the time.

he history of Nike contains a truth that can also be used to describe its future: Innovation breeds performance, and craftsmanship breeds authenticity. For more than thirty years Nike has been dedicated to elevating the performance of athletes by creating the most innovative product. our body is a temple and like a temple it should be treated accordingly.

As a young athlete you have a moral responsibility to care for your mind, body and spirit in a natural and healthy way. If you put in the work, the results can be boundless, however if you choose the fast route of steroids the results can be catastrophic.

For young athletes the temptation to become bigger, stronger and faster through the quick and easy methods of artificial substances can be extremely hard to resist. These days it seems as though the world is being turned on its ear with steroid use streaming across the line of all sports from cycling to horse racing.

Steroids have been come so widely used in high schools that three states (Florida, New Jersey and Texas) have mandated drug testing programs for high school athletes. It has become a quiet epidemic that no one talks enough about.

Athletes like Marion Jones have paid a huge price and damaged the face of track and field by denying then admitting to her steroid use.

Jones who won five medals at the 2000 Sidney Olympics had to forfeit all her medals because of her admission. Jones’ life, career and subsequent future have been destroyed because of her competitive need to win at all cost.

Lamine Diack, president of the International Association of Athletics Federations said that Jones would be remembered as one of the biggest frauds in sporting history.

WHAT ARE STEROIDS? Anabolic steroids are synthetically produced variants of the naturally occurring male hormone testosterone.

Both males and females have testosterone produced in their bodies: males in the testes, and females in the ovaries and other tissues. The full name for this class of drugs is androgenic (promoting masculine characteristics) anabolic (tissue building) steroids (the class of

drugs). Some of the common street (slang) names for anabolic steroids include arnolds, gym candy, pumpers, roids, stackers, weight trainers, and juice.

Currently, there are more than 100 different types of anabolic steroids that have been developed, and each requires a prescription to be used legally in the United States.

Anabolic steroids can be taken orally, injected intramuscularly, or rubbed on the skin when in the form of gels or creams. These drugs are often used in patterns called cycling, which involves taking multiple doses of steroids over a specific period of time, stopping for a period, and starting again. Users also frequently combine several different types of steroids in a process known as stacking. By doing this, users believe that the different steroids will interact to produce an effect on muscle size that is greater than the effects of using each drug individually.

SHORT-TERM EFFECTS Anabolic steroid abuse has been associated with a wide range of adverse side effects ranging from some that are physically unattractive, such as acne and breast development in men, to others that are life threatening. Most of the effects are reversible if the abuser stops taking the drug, but some can be permanent.

In addition to the physical effects, anabolic steroids can also cause increased irritability and aggression.

LONG-TERM EFFECTS

Most data on the long-term effects of anabolic steroids on humans come from case reports rather than formal epidemiological studies. From the case reports, the incidence of lifethreatening effects appears to be low, but serious adverse effects may be under-recognized or under-reported.

Data from animal studies seem to support this possibility. One study found that exposing male mice for one-fifth of their lifespan to steroid doses comparable to those taken by human athletes caused a high percentage of premature deaths.

Steroid abuse has been associated with cardiovascular diseases (CVD), including heart attacks and strokes, even in athletes younger than 30.

Steroids contribute to the development of CVD, partly by changing the levels of lipoproteins that carry cholesterol in the blood.

Steroids, particularly the oral types, increase the level of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and decrease the level of high-density lipoprotein (HDL). High LDL and low HDL levels increase the risk of atherosclerosis, a condition in which fatty substances are deposited inside arteries and disrupt blood flow. If blood is prevented from reaching the heart, the result can be a heart attack.

If blood is prevented from reaching the brain, the result can be a stroke.

According to a press release provided by the University of Michigan regarding the dangers of steroid use, there are additional side

STEROIDS. effects: Steroids can lead to depression and can be addictive.

Other side effects of steroids can include: tears of muscles and tendons; acne; liver damage; mood swings and aggressive behavior; an increase in men’s breast size; high blood pressure; abnormal cholesterol levels; jaundice; male-pattern baldness in men and women; and the growth of facial hair in women.

AVAILABILITY Regarding the ease by which one can obtain steroids, 18.1% of eighth graders, 29.7% of tenth graders, and 39.7% of twelfth graders surveyed in 2005 reported that steroids were "fairly easy" or "very easy" to obtain.

During 2005, 56.8% of twelfth graders surveyed reported that using steroids was a "great risk.”

PREVENTION There are several ways parents can discourage the use of steroids. The most important communication. Talk with your student-athlete about the dangers of steroid use and the risk involved. Give them a safe haven to talk freely with you about their temptations and pressures from their peers. If you do suspect your child may be using, talk with their physician as soon as possible.

Q. Do you think you’ll fit well in the system he’s trying to build?

A. I think his system work great, because of previous experiences, I feel can make a great contribution.

Q. Looking at your schedule, how do you feel you measure up to the other schools you’re playing against this season?

A. I feel we measure up fine and will be prepared to beat these teams if we execute our plays correctly. Coach says we will do things others rarely do.

Q. Is there a team you look forward to playing against the most?

A. I want Dexter. My friends on that team think they’ll beat us, and that they are more ready. But they are wrong.

Q. What off-season workouts or camps have you participated in to help prepare for the football season?

A. U of M football camp (I won MVP Offensive Lineman of Fresh, soph, & Jr.) I have been working out regularly. We will also have a Skyline mini camp.

Q. What are your goals for this year?

A. To start, win at least 6 out of 8 regular season games. I want to make 10 sacks at least, 20 tackles, and not let my quarterback get sacked.

Q. Each year that you played for Washtenaw Junior Football, how have you progressed as a student-athlete?

A. For the five years I played forWJF, I have improved greatly as a student athlete. It has taught me the priorities I go by now. School, family, faith, football.

Q. Are there any experiences or games that stand out over the years, that are really special to you? Why are these so special?

A. There are many things I remember but 2 stand out. Going undefeated and winning the championship, and beating Maize (our cross town rivals) for the first time. Man I loved it when we made that 4th and 1 stop. I was the 1st man there and started to push back then Drake Johnson (Pioneer) came in and every one else just followed.

Q. It seems as though your parents are just as excited about this season as you are. How does that carry over into your relationship with them?

A. I think the relationship with them is always stronger in football season.

Favorite class History Role Model Coach Heath, My Dad, My sister, Grandpa Don Q. This fall you’ll begin play with the Skyline Eagles in Ann Arbor, MI. How does this make you feel to suit up for a new team at a brand new school?

A. Well it feels GREAT! I understand that it is something special to play with a new school. But I'm Just trilled to play!

Q. There’s a rumor going around that you want to sing in a Rock Band.

What’s up with that?

A. O, so u did find out about that. well I’m in choir and my friends found out about it and asked me to be the singer and I like to sing so I thought ok what do I have to lose so that is how it happened.

Q. What’s the name of the band?

A. We haven't come with one yet Q. Any dreams of pursuing a music career?

A. Maybe, I don't know. It's an option that I will keep in mind.

Q. The fact that you’ll be the first group of young men to ever play for Skyline High is something that will be recorded forever in MHSAA history books. Have you thought about the historical significance of being on this team? Can you talk about the value of this?

A. I completely understand the value. I am excited to start they Skyline football tradition which will be there for many years to come. This team will be the foundation for other teams to build on.

Blake Toth,

Culver Academy

W

hen Blake Toth began to assess where he wanted to attend High School, he reached deep and far and found Culver Academy. Culver, located in Indiana, is about two and a half hours away from his hometown of Ann Arbor, MI. Toth who has played Hockey since he was five has grown into a prodigy on the ice. With his parents blessings, his dream of playing with the big boys at Culver Military Academy has come true.

This Fall, Toth will lace up his skates with the U-16 of Culver’s Military School. Standing at an unbelievable 6’ 1” and 155 lbs, he’s just begun to grow. Culver house’s some of the Country’s best prep athletes. In the 32 years of rich Hockey tradition, Culver has amassed 20 State Championships. 148 of their players have gone on to skate for college; with 70 going to Division I schools and 22 eventually being drafted by the NHL. In the next phase of his life, Toth plans to skate for the Air force Academy .

few years back Nick Bertoia was considered slow, undersized and an OK athlete.

Nick, however would beg to differ.

His coaches were probably thinking he was “good” not “great”. Nick has had to fight to prove his worth and for some odd reason, while he knew all along that he was more than capable of performing at a supremely high level.

As a year round athlete, Bertoia has made an impression in football, baseball, basketball and track. His performance on the track this spring was amazing, nearly breaking records in three events all while setting personal best records.

Nick Bertoia has an image of himself. It is magnificent. No one could see it until the Spring of 2007, something amazing happened. The little flickering light inside his head turned on as bright as a Supernova.

In the spring of 2007, Bertoia had a coming out party and it started on the track. Heads began to turn as he outperformed the other athletes in his events.

His performance that Spring, carried over into his other sports (Football, Basketball and Baseball).

While some would consider what an athlete does in middle school a footnote in the transition of becoming a high school athlete, his performance a yielded Bertoia the confidence to reach far and above that goal. If he continues to progress, grow and stay humble Bertoia has the makings to be a solid contributor in college.

Nick’s dad, Tony Bertoia, has cultivated his performance.

Coaching him in a variety of sports and instilling the values and work ethic of a true student-athlete.

Bertoia, who is now a Defensive freshman at Ann Arbor Pioneer is sure to turn heads this season on the gridiron complimenting a spectacular freshmen class.

Edwin “Skip� Bunton

Skip is the President and Founder of Body Specs, Inc. Skip has over 20 years of experience in orthopedic rehabilitation of sport-related injuries, physical development and sports performance. The popularity or 'buzz' regarding Body Specs! refreshing approach to orthopedic rehabilitation and physique development is making him one of the most sought after speakers for physical therapists and personal trainers. He has a diverse clientele ranging from non-athletes to adolescent athletes to the professional athlete. He has established a respectable reputation with area orthopedic surgeons and other personal trainers for his ability to resolve chronic sport related injuries through postrehabilitation/biomechanical performance enhancement programs when conventional methods have failed.

Skip has given numerous lectures at the university and clinical levels on improving methods for rehabilitation for return to sport and improving performance. Often he is asked to return because of his refreshing, fun, and thought provoking approach. Many anxiously look to Skip for relief of painful conditions that have not responded to other treatments. Bunton's clients admire his upbeat nature and genuine expressions of concern. He and his team of associates make it a point to develop positive relationships that help encourage patients in the course of their physical development and injury management.

Bunton believed the high-tech, computerized machines used by therapists and trainers actually increased the strain on the body. Guided by the understanding that symptoms often appear at places in the body other than where the pain is being generated, Bunton listened carefully to his clients and biomechanically analyzed the causes of their dysfunction and pain, as well as the ways in which they were compensating for them. Using that information and his knowledge of anatomy and physiology, Bunton simplified his approach to improving athletic performance, and rehabilitation of chronic orthopedic ailments that hampered functional progression especially in sports.

He is an award winning author whose works have been published in Journal of Athletic Training, Mosbys Yearbook in Sports Medicine, National Institute of Sports Medicine (United Kingdom) and Athletic Therapy: Health Care Perspectives.

He is a continuing education provider for the, NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SPORTS MEDICINE, INTERNATIONAL SPORTS SCIENCE ASSOC., AEROBIC & FITNESS ASSOC. OF AMERICA and MICHIGAN OSTEOPATHIC ASSOC. and is currently a board member of the Michigan American Heart Association. He is also the founder of IPSA, Injury Prevention in Sport Association.

Demetrius I. Sims Height 5'3 positions: Short Stop/Pitcher

Who ever said Baseball is dead in the African-American community didn’t tell Demetrius Sims.

Sims began playing baseball at the age of 5 years old participating in the Ypsilanti Township T-ball program.

He then went on to play with the Ypsilanti National Little League where he participated from 20002006. He helped lead Ypsilanti National Little League to 2 district titles and 2 state finals appearances. In 2006 he also played for the Ann Arbor Raptors travel baseball team helping lead them to a District and State championship. The following year he joined the Michigan Sports Academy Baseball Club (2007 MSA Silver & 2008 MSA-Black) where he was a key contributor to the success of this team. They finished first place in several tournaments, were crowned the 2008 State Champions, 2008 USSSA World Series Champions and a 9th place national ranking. He was chosen by TBS Travel Baseball Select to the top 100 prospects watch list. This list included some of the top 12U players in the country. After a very successful 2008 season he was selected to "Team Michigan" competing in upstate New York at the NATC Championship Tournament. This tournament was made up of 99 top teams from within the United States.

How does a journalist become a PHENOM? Just ask Jemele Hill. Hill has in her young life made history, changed the rules of journalism, and even ticked Boston Celtics fans off for being a die hard Piston’s fan. Since High School, Hill has shown the flair of the unusual to think outside of the box and write from her heart. Having been a friend of Hill’s for over 18 years, I know that has she has elevated the glass ceiling for sport’s writers, women and AfricanAmericans. Jemele has the flair, dynamic personality, creative wit and sense of humor that is difficult to find in today’s “all about me” journalist.

Hill, 33, is a sports columnist for the ESPN’s PAGE 2. Prior to working for ESPN, Hill was a Columnist for the Orlando Sentinel, where she had worked since February 2005. A Detroit, MI native, Hill made history while working for the Sentinel by becoming the first Female sports columnist in the nation. Her historic experience would be short lived as she was quickly hired by the ESPN after working in Orlando for a year.

Before moving to Orlando, Hill covered Michigan State football and basketball for the Detroit Free Press for six years.

You can catch Hill on a variety of TV shows on ESPN such as 1st and Ten and Rome is burning.

A Fresh Start

DOMINIQUE LYNCH

Dominique Lynch has so many trophies and awards from track and football that he’s lost count. However, that’s what Mother’s are for. Lynch has accumulated about 94 medals from track and field alone. With such an immaculate resume of awards, he would be every coach’s dream to have on their field. Which is why this season should be a special one for him. ‘Nique, who suited up for Belleville last season will don a new uniform for the Ypsilanti Phoenix. Ypsi, who changed more than their namesake (they were the Braves) lost a ton of talent on both sides of the ball from last season’s successful team. It’s not written in stone where Lynch will fit in with his new team, however no matter where it is- he better make more room on his trophy shelf.

There’s a new Sheriff in town and his name is Jeron Clayton. Well not quite, an officer of the law, as a matter of fact Clayton may have been ticketed for a few speeding violations as a result of his varsity debut for the Ann Arbor Pioneer’s, Clayton’s father, Jerry, recently won the Democratic primary for Washtenaw County Sheriff ousting incumbent Dan Minzey. While Clayton may not be pursing a career in law enforcement just yet, he’s on the fast track to becoming the SEC’s top running back.

With the Pioneer’s down by seven early in the first quarter, Pioneer Head Coach Jeremy Gold entrusted the offense into Clayton’s legs as he scored on a 93 yard blast on his second carry of the game. For his curtain call, the sophomore back scored on a 22- yard touchdown nearing the end of the first quarter; giving him 115 yards before the second quarter started. Clayton ended the day with 176 yards as the Pioneer squad began the season on a high note winning 24-19. Pioneer Linebacker Kirby Lee sealed the victory with a late game interception. Pioneer will need plenty of rest this week as they prepare for Adrian, who many pick to win the SEC this season.

There’s something to be said about streaks; especially when they are losing streaks. It had been four years and a month since Ypsilanti-Lincoln had won a game. With a 30 game losing streak, opponents are likely to not take you seriously. Enter Tecumseh, who was virtually picked as a no-brainer to win against the Rail Splitters. However, someone had another plan in mind. With a lot of creative play calling and Quarterback Andrew Dillon being a multi-demensional weapon scoring four touchdowns, throwing for two, receiving one and rushing for another. Ypsi came out on top 38-22 , snapping its losing streak and throwing a huge monkey from its back.

Unfortunately, this is not the return to football that senior Defensive Back Julian Foster had hoped for. Huron’s offense couldn’t put up enough points on the board to compete with the Bulldog rushing attack. Even with Chelsea star running back Nick Hill rushing for only 86-yards in the first half before being pulled for a thigh injury. Huron had no answer for the Bulldog’s ball controlling offense, however did manage a comeback after going down 28-7 in the first half. Chelsea killed any hopes of a River Rat win by sealing their victory with a 35 yard touchdown pass from QB Randy Cox to WR Michael Lenneman, winning 35-27. This was the inaugural SEC game for Huron. Huron’s Jeremy Jackson tallied up 95 receiving yards on 6 receptions and two score in an the loss.

Most new programs start out with a tradition of losing, however Head Coach Randy Hutchinson and his Skyline Eagles had something else in mind. Looking at the schedule, most would think it would be a tough climb to building a program with schools like Catholic Central, Brother Rice and Fowlerville on the schedule. The Eagle’s remained unimpressed and unfazed as they pounded Fowlerville 34-6 in their first game ever. Running Back Jake Hershel ripped up the field for 220 yards and 4 touchdowns. The defense was led by Roman Housminster who recorded 20 tackles on the day. Trevor Hill also added an element of pressure from the linebacker position recording one sack. The offensive line was anchored by Sam Rose at Center paving the way for an incredible outing for the offense The Phoenix couldn’t seem to get things going Friday against Milan. Showing the results of having an inexperienced O-line, Ypsilanti could only put up 8 points in a losing effort against the Big Reds’ 20. The Phoenix coaching staff will have to get creative if they want to be competitive this season.

Q: Even though you were out last year, what did your teammates do to make you feel a part of the team?

A: Since I suffered my injury before making my decision if I was going to come back and play my junior season, I decided that now that I had this knee injury, all sports had to go to the side and I had to focus on getting back into shape. Even though I wasn’t a part of the team I had a lot of close friends on the team that visited me after surgery. They told me about what the team was doing and their goals for the upcoming 2007 season. I made sure I came out and watched all their games. As I watched these games this is where my love for football developed, and basketball was just a thing of the past.

Q: What did you miss most about being on the field?

A: The thing I missed most was the home crowd and the momentum that you got during those night games on your home field. It couldn’t get any better. The feeling of running for a touchdown is indescribable. I missed the whole emotional aspect of the game.

Q: What did you miss the most? Football or Basketball?

A: At first I was really disappointed I couldn’t participate in the summer basketball league. This was what I needed to do to show the coach what I could do. As football season approached I realized how much I missed the game and what I use to do on the field. This is when I learned within myself that I was truly a football player.

Q: What are your goals for this season (educational and athletics)?

A: Coming into the 2008 season and my senior year, I look to maintain and build on my 3.8 GPA and give it my all for my senior season. Since I missed my junior season, which is probably the most important in a high school athlete’s career, I look forward to making a strong comeback this fall on the field. I want to show recruiters what I can do and give scouts one last chance to see what I can do.

Q: Do you think your injury has made you better as an athlete? Student? If so how?

A: The injury has impacted me majorly both on the field and in the classroom. I saw that I tended to give a lot more effort and hard work into what I do in both those environments. I think that came from the tedious five-month rehab that I went through, I will never forget those five months that I spent training myself to get back to doing what I love to do, compete.

Q: Where are you hoping to attend college?

A: I’m still looking (in state and out of state...) so I couldn’t give you a straight answer on that just yet. Possibly an Ivy League school, or a school within the mid west. Michigan, Michigan State and U-M Dearborn are all on my list. I’m also curious to see what my senior season in football brings to me depending on how that goes.

Q: Is your goal to play college ball? Which would you rather play basketball or football?

A: No doubt football. It’s a dream. Being absent from my junior season makes that goal that much harder to obtain, but I’m working everyday in order to get closer to that.

Q: What do you look forward to the most on the field this season?

A: Being a more versatile player than I was before. Coming into this season I’ll be playing both cornerback and halfback. Playing both ways really excites me. I’m also looking forward to achieving a winning record and making the playoffs this season.

Q: How have your parents influenced your preparation for your senior season?

A: My mother provides me with the support that I need every game, but my dad does a lot more for me.. Without my father I don’t know where I’d be in terms of coming into the season. He puts me in the right camps along with being an off-the-field coach to me. He’s doing everything he can to make sure this upcoming season is the best that it can be.

Q: According to your Dad, you’ve been involved in a few educational programs geared toward getting you prepared for college. What are they?

How have they helped you?

A: I’ve been involved in both the Kappa League and the Esquire Leadership Programs. Both of these have taught me a lot about leadership, self responsibility, time management, community service and etiquette. They have also showed me a few study methods that I continue to utilize in the classroom. I’ve been a lot more involved in the community, as I participate in projects through these groups that’s sole purpose is to give back and to help those in need. I'm also a member of Huron High School's National Honor Society which also gets involved in leadership and community service activities.

I was also recently selected to participate in the Kettering University's pre-college 5-week residential AIM (Academically Interested Minorities) program this summer. This program provides students with a real life college experience by enrolling students in college level management and engineering classes (calculus, physics, chemistry, computer programming, economics, and management) to develop functional, quantitative and qualitative skills. The program also includes a career institute program which exposes us to companies and their staff who work in engineering and management positions.

Q: Let’s talk about your experience with Washtenaw Junior Football, how did that help with your growth and development as a player and your introduction into football?

A: If it wasn’t for WJF, I wouldn’t have the fundamentals and basic knowledge of the game that I have today. The program also taught me self discipline. Coming into WJF I had never played football before. My days on the Blue squad will always have importance to me because those are my roots and where I began what I have come to love today.

Q: Are their particular lessons your coaches taught you that still influence you today?

A: Yes, I played for both Coach Yarrington and Coach Farha during my days in WJF and I learned from both that no matter how hard the work is that you always need to give full effort. They really stressed the function of teamwork to me and they showed me the beauty of things that could be done if people work together.

A: Pioneer. That’s a given.

A: We have something to prove to everybody this year and we are going to get after it.
