Greetings!

We are here at the beginning of the fall season. This year’s school sessions have begun and the fall sporting events are near. As summer is winding down for us I hope you were able to enjoy those nice and hot days by partaking in a day at the lake, a day on the golf course or whatever fits you best in your leisure time. Family, friends and fun are important!

I would like to thank all of you who either participated in golfing or being a sponsor at the Remodeler’s Council Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament on August 1 at Mahoney Golf Course. The weather was great and it was a beautiful day. We appreciate everyone’s support of this event. It was another successful turnout!

The next event will be on September 3 at the new Lincoln/Lancaster County Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore. Watch your communication for further details on this event. Please invite guests to attend as this will be very informative and insightful as we learn the ins and outs of the donation and purchasing processes at the ReStore.

I would like to say thanks for everyone’s support and I look forward to seeing you at one of these next events!

Best of the Best The Best of the Best contest has been changed to quarterly for 2014. The third quarter features decks, so be sure to submit your photo of a deck project you have done or been a part of since 2012 to the HBAL office no later than September 15, 2014 to be considered as the Best of the Best! Recognition will include a picture of the project along with your company name in the Step by Step publication and a spot on the HBAL website for three months. Projects that have won previously are ineligible.

One of the main reasons is that new data shows the number of fatalities in residential construction increased by 37% compared to just a 3% increase in nonresidential construction in 2012, which is the most recent data available. OSHA has also instituted a number of local enforcement emphasis programs aimed at reducing numerous construction hazards, including those in residential.

Basement-Related Violations Rank Ninth on OSHA’s Most Cited List NAHB recently compiled a top 10 list of the most cited OSHA violations, and basement-related violations are rank fairly high.

Remodelers should be aware of a memo issued by OSHA in 1995 that provides guidance on basement-related work.

The memo, “Suspension of 29 CFR 1926.652 to House Foundation/Basement Excavations,” specifies the trenching/ exaction requirements of the regulation as they apply to house construction, which is still in effect at the present time. The memo requires house foundations to be benched two feet horizontal for every five feet vertical (see diagram at right) and the other conditions outlined in the memo exist.

House foundations must be benched 2 feet horizontal for every 5 feet vertical. Also, minimize the number and duration of workers in the trench and eliminate vibration.

The depth of the foundation/basement trench cannot exceed 7 ½ feet unless other cave-in protection is provided.
