As I write this, the calendar says spring has arrived, yet the snowflakes outside my window say, otherwise. If you’re like me, the little taste of spring we’ve had has given me a new burst of motivation and I’m more than ready to say goodbye to winter.

Last month we heard from Rose Hood Buss from Region V on recognizing and helping to prevent suicide in our community.

The information was sobering, yet I think most members in attendance would agree that it was well worth hearing. If you were not able to attend and would like more information, I would encourage you to seek out more information on the QPR Training.

Bring your questions about remodeling and how it improves home values.

Our April meeting will feature a panel of guests who are experts in the real estate arena. As remodelers, I’m sure you’ve all heard from your clients, “If I decide to sell, will I be able to recoup what I put into this project?” This meeting will be a chance to ask all those pressing questions and get the answers you’ve been looking for. Please come ready to interact with three knowledgeable real estate agents.

The Bridge Behavioral Health Demo

Window Safety and Fall Prevention Window Safety Week, recognized every year during the first full week in April, serves as a reminder of recognizing the importance of window safety and fall prevention year-round. This week is designed to heighten the awareness of what parents and caregivers should do to help keep their homes and families safer from the risk of accidental falls or injuries through windows.

In the spring, with the arrival of warmer weather, many homeowners begin to open windows for ventilation. However, open windows can be dangerous for young children who are not properly supervised. While the number of falls from windows is generally small compared with other recorded child injuries, a fall from a window can result in serious injury or even death.

Window Safety and Fall Prevention Tips The Window Safety Task Force offers these tips to protect children from window falls:

• When young children are around, keep windows closed and locked.

• When opening a window for ventilation, use those located out of a child’s reach. For example, the upper sash of a double hung window.

• Avoid the placement of furniture near windows to prevent children from climbing • Don’t allow children to jump on beds or other furniture to help reduce potential falls.

• Don’t rely on insect screens to prevent a window fall. Insect screens are designed to keep bugs out, not to keep children in the home.

• Supervise children to keep child’s play away from windows, balconies or patio doors. Keep play in the center of a room, if possible.

• Install code-compliant devices designed to limit how far a window will open or window guards (with quick-release mechanisms in case of fire) to help prevent a fall.

• Teach your child how to safely use a window to escape during an emergency, such as a fire.
