It definitely feels like spring now. Grass is getting green and leaves are growing on trees. That tells me it is time for the Spring Parade of Homes! We are excited to share 46 individual homes built by 36 HBAL builder members. It is exciting to see an increase in the number of homes as last year we had 25.

This means there is a lot more opportunity for people to see the diversity and individuality each builder provides. Across all the homes, you will find many unique features that have been worked on by our talented builders, designers, subcontractors and suppliers. A lot of work goes into completing a Parade home and we appreciate the work done to help this event continue to be successful. We hope to see many of you visiting us during the Parade May 12-19.

I will leave you with a little motivation: “Each of us is carving a stone, erecting a column, or cutting a piece of stained glass in the construction of something much bigger than ourselves.”

Lewis Awarded Honorary Life Membership

One of the most prestigious awards given by the Home Builders Association of Lincoln (HBAL) is an Honorary Life Membership. Occasionally, we have a member who has dedicated so much of his or her life to the service of HBAL and the homebuilding industry that they have earned our unending respect and we honor them with this award. Jo Lewis was the most recent member to receive this honor. Jo recently retired from Nebraska Bank of Commerce.

She has been an active member of HBAL since 1987 and served 13 years between the HBAL and Foundation Boards of Directors. Her many years of dedication to HBAL and being an advocate for affordable Dear Beau and HBAL Board of Directors; housing is outstanding and Michaela, Jennie and Laure AND all HBAL members and we are honored to have her affiliates, as a member.

How heartwarming and shocked I was to be honored with an HBAL Life Membership... and so very, very pleased. I Jo is one of ten Honorary Life was without words, very unusual for me, as you know!

The others are Jim HBAL is such an outstanding organization, a Christo, Nadine Condello, Jim cornerstone of Lincoln and in their hands, hold a bucket Crawford, Duane Helmink, load of my friends and colleagues. Humbly honored, Jo Lewis WHEREAS, Jo Lewis has served continuously as an active member of the Home Builders Association of Lincoln for over 36 years, and WHEREAS, Jo Lewis served as Secretary of the Home Builders Association of Lincoln from 1994 throug h 1996, and WHEREAS, Jo Lewis served as 2nd Vice President of the Home Builders Association of Lincoln from 1997 throug h 2003, and WHEREAS, Jo Lewis served on the Lincoln Home Builde rs Care Foundation Board of Directors from 2011 through 2013, and WHEREAS, Jo Lewis served a combined total of 13 years on the Home Builders Associ ation of Lincoln’s and Lincoln Home Builders Care Foundation’s Boards of Direct ors, and WHEREAS, Jo Lewis becam e known as the “Church Lady” for her fabulous invocations before dinner meetings, and WHEREAS, Jo Lewis was honored with Associate of the Year in 1998 and the Dan Peterson Afford able Housing Award in 2000, and WHEREAS, Jo Lewis was a dedicated volunteer for the Home Builders Association of Lincoln’s Habita t for Humanity blitz build homes, and WHEREAS, Jo Lewis was a proud supporter of the annual Santa Cop project, and WHEREAS, Jo Lewis was always found with a smile and grilling tools at the Home Builders Association of Lincoln’s annual fundra iser golf tournament, and WHEREAS, Jo Lewis’ 38-yea r career, dedicated to helpin g provide loans to thousands of homeowners in the Lincoln community, has come to a close, and WHEREAS, Jo Lewis has been an advocate for afford able housing and will continue to do so as she moves into her next career, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Directors declared by unanimous action that JO LEWIS is an HONORARY LIFE MEMBER of the Home Builders Association of Lincoln.

Tell us about your family. My husband Derek and I have been married for six years. We have two children; our son Kallum is 5 and daughter Decklyn is 3.

If you had to eat one meal every day for the rest of your life, what would it be? Breakfast: eggs, bacon, and potatoes with hot sauce Where are you from? Where did you go to school? I was born in Lincoln, but grew up most of my life in Elba, NE. I started in third grade at a K-12 one-building school and graduated with 15 in my class. I then attended Hastings College where I played four seasons of volleyball and received my undergraduate degree in marketing. I later completed a master program in project management at Bellevue University.

What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? I climbed the Great Wall of China on my hands and knees after I tore my ACL the week before.

What is your greatest talent that you don’t utilize in your daily work life?

I'm an excellent trip and party planner. I have a knack for finding unique locations, restaurants, and entertainment.

When you’re not working, how do you enjoy spending your time? Pretending I'm a homesteader: gardening, raising chickens, herding cats, and riding horses.

Who is someone who's made a big impact on your life? Why? My mother.

She instilled in me from childhood that I needed to be strong enough and smart enough to create my own success and happiness. This idea has always pushed me forward to the next life step.

What do you love the most about your job? I enjoy helping to build something tangible that will be around for years to come. I love getting to drive my children down streets, many that I developed with Krueger Development, and show them the houses Queenpin Builders has built. I also love getting to work and grow Queenpin Builders with my co-owner and best friend, Stephanie Ponce.

How has your career benefited from being a member of HBAL? Being an HBAL member allows me to be on the "first to know" list about issues both good and bad in the Lincoln market. The HBAL staff does a great job of sharing information as soon as they obtain it.

Any tips or advice for new HBAL members? If you are uncertain in a particular matter within this industry, turn toward your fellow members for help.

Tribute toYouth April 9, 2024 • Country Club of Lincoln

On Tuesday, April 9, the Home Builders Association of Lincoln honored local youth who participated in the High School Interior Design and Residential CAD Contest as well as Lincoln Home Builders Care Foundation scholarship winners.

Students in attendance from SCC-Milford were also recognized. The guest speaker for the evening was Governor Jim Pillen.

Logan attends Lincoln East High School and will be joining the Lincoln Electrical Joint Apprenticeship and Training Center to become an electrician. Logan hopes to complete his journeyman’s license in the next 5 years.

Logan is active with several jobs. He is interested in pursuing a career in construction because he knows there aren’t enough electricians to do the available work. Logan credits his mom for influencing his decision to join the construction industry. His mom has worked in the construction industry since before graduating from high school. He said she loves her work and always told him if you love what you do, it’s not working.

Tribute to Youth | Scholarship Winners

Scholarship Winners Ian Tinsley Ian attends Lincoln East High School and plans to attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln majoring in Construction Management. Ian hopes to find a job as a project engineer or project manager at a construction firm. He is active in FBLA and Cross Country, has worked for Schneider Custom Homes, has his own lawn care business and volunteers for YFC Lincoln.

Burke Settles Burke attends Raymond Central High School and plans to attend Southeast Community College majoring in electrical technology.

After graduating Burke hopes to become a journeyman electrician. Burke is

Cameron Becker Cameron attends Pius X High School and plans to attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and become a civil engineer.

Cameron is active with Pius basketball, is a volunteer coach for YMCA basketball and works for Judson Irrigation.

Jacob Williams Jacob attends WilberClatonia High School and plans to attend Northeast Community College majoring in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning. After graduation he hopes to work for an HVAC contractor.

Jacob is active with high school track and field, FFA, FBLA and Student Council.

Philip Karpov Philip attends Raymond Central High School and plans to attend Southeast Community College majoring in Building Construction Technology. After graduation, he hopes to own his own construction business. Philip is active in FBLA, FCA, quizbowl, football and wrestling. He has worked for Premium Woods and Professional Painting.

Happy May! May is Small Business Month. Keep local, small businesses in mind when you are shopping, go out to eat or hire services.

Keeping money in our community is important for stability and growth. At Willet Construction, we Jason Willet focus on making our Remodelers Council purchases locally and Chairperson building relationships with our suppliers and subcontractors. I encourage you to do the same.

We had great weather for people to head out and see how remodelers can change homes for better living during the Tour of Remodeled Homes. The Tour is one of my favorite events each year, and I encourage more remodelers to enter a home so we can grow the experience for the attendees. More attendees mean more exposure and value to our businesses to showcase our talents.
