"Being on the board of HBAL has been a real eye opener to me on just how important the organization is and how important it is to support it. From meeting with City Council members to discussing ways to improve housing in Lincoln to meeting with Building & Safety to help discuss code changes and clarificaions. HBAL is a very active association and really exceeds in its effort to help the home building community of Lincoln."

President’s Message

We had a successful event-filled month in May. Thank you to everyone who helped with the Car Show. We had a good turn out considering the morning's misty weather, but the sun eventually came out and so did the spectators. We raised over $8,000 for the HBAL foundation.

It was a beautiful week for the Spring Parade of Homes. We received great feedback and it sounds like many of the homes were full of visitors throughout the week.

On May 17, I attended, along with a few other HBAL board members, the celebration of the 29th home built by the Lincoln Northeast High School residential construction students. These students gained hands-on construction experience and knowledge that you can’t get from reading a text book. The best part though, was as they were individually recognized you could see the pride they had knowing they helped to build a house that would be someone’s future home.

As we move into warmer weather and the planning of vacations, keep in mind the HBAL golf tournament on June 2 and the Remodelors golf tournament on August 18. These are both fun events to help with or participate in and a great way meet other members, plus it’s a day out of the office.

Tell us about your family. My wonderful wife, Megan, and I have been married for 5 years. We have two sons together. Leo is 2 years old and is the baby boss around the house as he goes through his terrible two stage. Kade is 4 years old and loves sports and trying to beat me in footraces all the time. My step daughter, Harper, is 11 years old and is such an amazing big sister to the boys and a great help around the house! She also loves sports and is currently in soccer and cheer.

Name a recent movie you watched that blew you away? Minions: The Rise of Gru.... because with small children, the only movies I get to watch are kid movies.

If you had to eat one meal every day for the rest of your life, what would it be? Steak and potatoes.

Favorite place you've traveled? My wife and I went to Maui, HI for our honeymoon and would love to go back.

What did you want to be when you grew up? A professional baseball player. Where are you from? Where did you go to school? I was born and raised in Rice Lake, WI. I lived there until I went to college in Platteville, WI.

What's the strangest thing you've ever done? I went sky diving with my dad on my 21st birthday.

When you’re not working, how do you enjoy spending your time?

I enjoy spending time with my family. Any day, any time but especially the summers because we will spend all weekend on our boat just hanging out on the water.

What do you/did you love the most about your job? I love hearing people's stories and what makes them want to build a new home or remodel their existing one.

What are your future goals and aspirations for your career? To learn and grow the business, and myself, to help many people design their future dream homes.

How long have you been a member of HBAL? Less than one year.

How has your career benefited from being a member of HBAL? So far it's been great networking with people and learning tips and tricks that have helped them along the way.

HBAL

MORE THAN JUST A

MEMBER

When you join HBAL, your dues are more than just membership in the organization.

The Home Builders Association of Lincoln provides opportunities to network and learn through member events, meetings, social hours and educational classes. HBAL's volunteer leadership and staff also do extensive behind the scenes work with government officials at the State and Local levels helping to decrease regulation and control housing costs. For example, in 2020, members worked with the City Council on local amendments to the 2018 International Energy Conservation Code, with several amendments adopted by the City Council. In 2021, Lincoln Electric System met with HBAL members about their proposed change to require conduit to supply power to homes. After months of work and studying the proposed changes, it was determined the current process of power supply worked best. We also had several members provide input to the Planning Department as they changed zoning code to benefit affordable housing. We appreciate all the dedicated members of HBAL who assist in these endeavors.

HBAL provides numerous opportunities for members to build their business through networking events, educational seminars and charitable activities. If you're interested in getting more involved or know someone who would benefit from being a member of HBAL, view and share our Membership Opportunities Brouchure.

June is here and remodeling is in full swing. As remodeling contractors we sometimes should review who we are working with as subcontractors. We need to make sure we ask some of the important questions that protect us and our customers. We all want jobs to run smoothly and it is important to have the best contractors built on relationships, not price only.

Some great questions to ask are: How long have they been in business? Are they properly insured and licensed? What are the timelines for their products? How will they deal with pricing changes, payment schedules? Are they involved members of HBAL? What are their warranties? Do they have a set schedule to follow? Do they have referrals or completion pictures? We take pride in what we do for our customers and these are all very important to give the best remodeling experience to everyone involved. Join us on June 14 for the Remodelers Council picnic at Antelope Park. On June 16, come and learn more about what your membership is doing for you and your community at the HBAL 101 Lunch & Learn.

Cruisin’ for the Trades Car Show

The Car Show was held May 6. Slow start to the morning with mist and fog but had 110 cars in the Show. Last year had about 180. Overall, the show generated just over $17,000. After paying expenses net income was over $8,000.

Lincoln Transportation & Utilities (LTU)

Sidewalks:

Denny Van Horn, Matt Kinning and Dave Chapin met with Liz Elliott the director of LTU on 4/13 regarding the requirements for post pour inspections on sidewalks. Have not received an update from LTU

on the new requirements. The meeting with Liz was positive. LTU has hired a sidewalk inspector. HBAL will continue to communicate with LTU.

Careers in Construction: Andrew Schellpeper and Rick Willet have given some presentations to high schools in and around Lincoln. Construction Career Day was well attended and went well. Superintendent Paul Gausman attended and was very impressed with the event. Channel 8 provided some news coverage of the event. Lori Wellman, Jereme Montgomery, Andrew Schellpeper, Bo Jones, Denny Van Horn, Beau Daffer, Fred Hoppe and Michaela Schwarten met at The Career Academy (TCA) to find out how we can strengthen the construction pathway at TCA. Employers in the construction industry can hire 16- and 17-year-olds, but there may be some additional rules and insurance requirements. Jereme has asked Andrew Schellpeper to serve as chairman of the Careers in Construction committee.

Habitat for Humanity:

Habitat is looking for a place to store 5-6 construction trailers. Preferably north side, fenced-in location. Habitat ReStore’s new location is going great. They have started an e-commerce platform that is already profitable.

Building & Safety:

Building & Safety will be enforcing the requirement to have final stamped plans on site during any final inspection or the inspection will fail, and the contractor will need to pay reinspection fees.
