President’s Message

Lori Wellman, HBAL President

As only the second female President in 72 years it is an honor to be voted into this position. My path into the construction industry started in college at UNK. I learned of a major that combined design and construction, and after a few classes I declared my major in Kitchen and Bath Design.

I truly enjoy helping people to improve their homes and creating spaces that fit their needs and visions. I often tell people "I get to take an old penny and shine it, make it new again."

I moved to Lincoln in 1997 to work for Lincoln Cabinet and the first HBAL event I attended was at the Villager Hotel on O Street. I had been encouraged to go to meet people I would be working with and also some people my own age here in Lincoln.

Through this organization I have indeed made many connections, but more so I have made friendships. People who I can call for advice, a helping hand or to toast an accomplishment. If you have been a member for a while, you know what a great group of members we have in HBAL. If you are new to Home Builders and you get to know one or two people, you will soon know ten more and your circle will continue to widen each year.

The construction industry is ever changing; new products are always on the horizon, as well as code changes and requirements that we will have to adapt to each year. I am looking forward to getting to know even more of our members this year and making some new friends. We are all wondering, what will 2023 bring? No matter what this year has in store, just remember as an association we are stronger together.

Member News

Community Builders Breakfast Habitat for Humanity of Lincoln’s Community Builders Breakfast will be held on Wednesday, March 22 from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. at the DelRay 817. The Community Builders Breakfast is Habitat’s largest fundraising event of the year and highlights the work of area builders, construction companies and real estate members in the area of affordable housing.

The event will include inspiring stories from Habitat homeowners, motivational speakers and awards to community partners and volunteers. Attendees will include members of the building and construction industries, real estate professionals and financial service and lending organizations and is presented by local construction tech company, CompanyCam.

All money raised from the event will go to building and repairing homes for families in Lancaster and Seward counties in need of safe, affordable housing.

Table sponsorships for the Community Builders Breakfast are available now by emailing LaCresha Brooks at lbrooks@lincolnhabitat.org. Individual tickets go on sale in February. Details on the event can be found at LincolnHabitat.org.

What would be the theme song of your life right now? Journey - Don't Stop Believin'!

Where are you from? Where did you go to school? Ken - Lincoln/Lincoln Southeast, Jackie - Norfolk/Norfolk High What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? Ken was 60 years old when he got his first tattoo!

What's the strangest thing you've ever done? Jackie - rode a jet ski from Omaha to St Louis on the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers in 3 1/2 days!

What is your greatest talent that you don’t utilize in your daily work life? Ken - singing When you’re not working, how do you enjoy spending your time? Golfing, traveling, sitting on the patio drinking wine Who is someone who's made a big impact on your life? Why? Ken - my dad taught me how to work hard and the value of it and the importance of good customer service.

If you could have dinner with one famous person from the past or present, who would it be? Ken - Ronald Reagan What do you/did you love the most about your job? Jackie - the interaction with customers and the crew, I just love people!

What experiences and past roles have led you to where you are today?

Jackie - my previous career of 28 years in Physical Therapy, with the last 10 as a Rehab Director, taught me how to lead others and find their passion. I love seeing people thrive in any aspect of their life!

What career advice do you live by?

Who gave it to you? If you're going to make a move in business, make sure it's 2 steps forward and not just 1. A very wise business owner from Omaha What’s one skill you’d like to develop or sharpen this year? Jackie - I just finished college in Landscape Design, so I'd like to continue working on my design skills!

What are your future goals and aspirations for your career? To continue to grow Luxury, not necessarily to be the biggest, but the best!

How has your career benefited from being a member of HBAL? Building relationships with other members and acquiring clients at Home & Garden Show.

What is your favorite HBAL event and why? Home and Garden show. We love meeting new people and discussing their landscaping wants and needs.

Any tips or advice for new HBAL members? Build those relationships and attend the events!

Sue Eaton with Reimers Kaufman Concrete Products received the 2022 Associate of the Year Award. Sue has been active in Home Builders for many years. She served as chairperson for the Remodelers Council of Lincoln in 2021 and recently assumed a lead role with HBAL’s golf tournaments helping oversee food prep and spending all day assisting with grilling. Thanks to Sue, we are able to providing lunch for over 300 golfers each year.

Development Services Center Employee of the Year Award went to Greg Edwards. Greg always answers the phone when builders call and works to find the solution to solve any issue. This has been especially true with the new 2018 building code. Greg has also done an excellent job of working with the field inspectors making sure they are all on the same page.

January Meeting Publication of the Remodelers Council of Lincoln February 2023 • Vol. 26, No. 2

What remodel trends will be big in 2023? The pandemic changed the way people work and spend time at home. We can expect to see those changes reflected in the renovations homeowners prioritize in the new year.

Ben Klein Coupled with a rise in Remodelers Council material costs and a Chairperson sky-high housing market, experts predict home renovations focused on increasing comfort and functionality will be big.

Some trends we should be looking at this year include home offices. With more people working from home on a regular basis, experts predict home office renovations to be big. This may include anything from building a dedicated home office space or simply upgrading an existing workspace to make it more comfortable and functional.

With the cost of new homes and interest rates, clients will be looking to upgrade their existing homes. Daily use areas like kitchens and bathrooms will be first.

Outdoor living spaces will also see an uptick in 2023. With more time being spent at home, homeowners are looking to maximize livable space wherever possible, including outdoors. Especially as weather begins to warm up, experts say we can expect to see renovations move outside.

A. First entry fee is $550.

B. Additional entries are $350.

C. Remodeler must be a member of the Remodelers Council of Lincoln to participate in the Tour of Remodeled Homes. Should a non-member wish to participate, they must submit their application for membership in time to be approved and become a member prior to submission of contract to enter the Tour of Remodeled Homes. Participation is open to all Remodelers Council members in good standing.

II. I agree to submit all of the following additional materials

by Tuesday, February 28, 2023: A. Information sheet about the project giving a description and a map showing the location of the entry.

B. Photo or drawing of the completed project.

III. The project must showcase a change in shape, form or function of the residence, and not have been shown to the public before.

IV. The purpose of the Tour of Remodeled Homes is to increase exposure of our participating members; to promote a more professional image and increase our credibility; to benefit the public by stimulating an interest in remodeling existing homes; and to showcase our quality workmanship and new products while increasing the membership of the Remodelers Council.

V. I agree to staff the home with at least two people: one person in each of the remodeled areas and one at the main entrance to take tickets the full hours of the Tour of Remodeled Homes.

VI. I agree not to open the entered home to the public prior to the Tour of Remodeled Homes.

VII. I agree that the Remodelers Council and/or the Home Builders Association of Lincoln will not be held liable for any loss due to theft, vandalism or personal injury.

VIII. This contract is null and void unless at least ten projects are entered by February 28, 2023.

The 2023 Tour of Remodeled Homes Guidebook will be distributed to the public at each Tour Entry and will be available via an online flipbook on www.HBAL.org for approximately one year after the event.

Contract and artwork must be submitted no later than Tuesday, February 28, 2023.

Please submit your ad in BOTH black and white (print version) and full color (online version).

Acceptable artwork formats include hi-res PDF, JPG or TIF. There is a $55 minimum charge to design your ad.
