President’s Message

Lori Wellman, HBAL President

In a time when businesses and organizations are struggling to find employees, at HBAL we are very fortunate to have three great individuals who keep our organization running smoothly. Without their leadership and individual talents, we would not be the organization we are today.

In August, Michaela will celebrate 25 years and Jennie 15 years with Home Builders. Both are significant milestones that speak to the culture of our great organization. Help me recognize them both for all they do preparing for our many meetings and events and creating the publications for HBAL. Many hours are spent making sure everything is as perfect as can be and ensuring they take care of our membership. Thank you both for all you do!

Family Fun Night on August 4 at Sun Valley Lanes & Games and the Remodelers Council Golf Tournament on August 18 at Holmes Golf Course. These events are always a fun time, I hope to see you there.

Calling All Remodelers Council Members!

If you are interested in serving as a Remodelers Council Officer, contact Jennie Korth at 402-423-4225 or jennie@hbal.org for more information!

I hope everyone is having a great summer. Soon we will see all the kids back in school. We have a busy month in store with HBAL's Family Fun Night on August 4 and the Remodelers Council Golf Tournament on August 18.

Let's talk about the most important part of all of our jobs: safety. Safety is the number one factor overlooked by contractors and customers alike. We want to get the job done, and the customer wants it done even faster, so sometimes we take it for granted that it will be "just fine."

The list of accidents that happen at home building and remodeling sites can be frightening. Contractors falling from ladders and roofs, injuries from equipment and flying debris, broken bones from collapsing walls or floors. Almost all accidents are preventable if we work with staff and our customers. If a customer is asking for a project that is unsafe, it is okay for you to say no. We all want to go home to our families every night. A load bearing wall, countertop, deck rail, etc. is not worth the lost work time for the employee, employer or customer. As an HBAL or Remodelers Council member, what are the steps and training that you do to keep yourselves and customers safe? Ask yourself these questions so that we can all continue to do the jobs that we love to do!

June Board Report

Remodelers Council:

The Remodelers Council held their annual picnic at Antelope Park on Wednesday, June 14 with 24 in attendance. The Remodelers Golf tournament is coming up on Friday, August 18. The next regular meeting will be on Wednesday, September 6 at Concrete Craft of Lincoln.

Membership Committee: The following new members were approved:

• Sunset Blinds, Alex Rybak

Sponsor: Mike Kinning

• TradeGamz, Bo Jones

Sponsor: Denny Van Horn

Lincoln Transportation & Utilities (LTU)

Sidewalks:

Denny Van Horn has continued conversations with Liz Elliott with LTU and received confirmation the City will do pre-pour inspections. The City’s website still has not been updated with the changes proposed by HBAL, but staff assures us this should be changed soon. HBAL is planning meetings with LTU on a quarterly basis.

Careers in Construction:

Jereme Montgomery will be transitioning out of his role leading the Careers in Construction committee and has been working with Andrew Schellpeper for a smooth transition.

Hunter Whissler:

In 2019, HBAL contributed $15,000 towards the remodel of a home for a child who has Duchenne’s muscular dystrophy, which is fatal. Mike Kinning worked on the project and thanked the Board for

the contribution. There is a fundraising golf tournament for Hunter on 9/29 at the Ashland Country Club. If anyone is interested reach out to Mike Kinning for more details.

TradeGamz:

Bo Jones has created a website/platform TradeGamz to introduce students in grades 8-12 to different career opportunities. TradeGamz had 6,000 views in 48 hours with positive response from educators. It is free for students and educators but there is a cost for businesses to sign up. Bo encouraged businesses to sign up for the platform to promote their business and the homebuilding industry. Members are also invited to promote the platform through social media.
