“Bring it On” Approach Results in Innovation and Dynamic Designs Across Northern Kentucky

Written by Vicki Prichard

I

t’s no stretch to say that the sky’s the limit when it comes to current and new development throughout Northern Kentucky.

“There have been significant accomplishments in the development community regarding Northern Kentucky and its growth trajectory,” says Brian Miller, Executive Vice President of the Building Industry Association of Northern Kentucky. “Commercial and industrial development is at an all-time recorded high.”

Developers Design Communities Northern Kentucky builders have their thumb on the pulse of homebuyers’ broad range of tastes and needs. They are creating stylish, well-appointed new communities in both the urban core and suburbs to fit an array of lifestyles.

says Jason Yeager, president of Ashley Homes. “The overriding principle is to take 20% of the land you’re using and create green spaces, a town center, a park, and a walking trail,” Yeager explains. “The emphasis is geared toward walkability and community space.”

“Housing choices are growing Yeager says Sanctuary homes as our urban core continues will feature larger front porches to see a resurgence, and our and sit closer to the street, suburbs offer a variety of promoting walkability. housing choices to satisfy the burgeoning demand for new housing in our area,” says Miller. “It’s a fresh take on community development,” says Yeager. “It’s pretty popular around the An example of these new Miller points to the Amazon country.” communities is located in Prime Air Hub as a proven Villa Hills. The development is part of a 450-acre master planned community, where buyers can create a home on an estate-size lot, near miles of wooded trails and still less than 20 minutes from downtown Cincinnati. “It’s the largest master plan community in this part of the country,” says John Toebben, president of Toebben Builders. “The community, as a whole, has ten miles of hiking and equestrian trails on it.” The development’s Village Green area will have an event lawn to host annual events. Toebben says Village Green will have a very downtown feel, featuring the conveniences of retail venues. “We have three boutique retail stores going in,” says Toebben. “The plans are for a brewery and general store combination, a fitness/wellness center, and a pet and people salon.” Toebben feels that Rivers Pointe Estates will provide great product for the whole

region and ties back to the philosophies of aging in place, getting to know your neighbors, and staying in a community. Other new developments are being designed with agility and adaptability in mind. Fischer Home’s Tuscany received “bubble zoning” approval, providing the flexibility to change with the times to be more nimble in addressing the region’s market demands. Located in Covington, Tuscany features designer homes, villas, patio homes, and gallery condominiums, set amidst rolling hills and wooded valleys. Miller says the number of current and future developments in Northern Kentucky are truly too many too list, but one thing is certain – newcomers will find all ranges of options in lifestyle, senior living, and familyoriented communities. Celebrating 225 Years with Dazzling New Developments and Transformations How to celebrate a 225th birthday? Newport’s proverbial candles on the cake will take the form of a world-class development and a dynamic

transformation of an existing regional destination.

dollars in annual economic impact upon completion.

The city’s riverfront will be increasingly vibrant with a world-class music venue, currently under construction at the confluence of the Licking and Ohio Rivers. Ovation, a 25-acre mixed-use development with more than 800 residential units, restaurants, retail, hotels, and offices, will be defined by a ground-breaking concert venue that will accommodate indoor audiences of up to 2,700 and an outdoor capacity for summer shows of up to 7,000. It will also serve as a catalyst for other developments. The concert hall’s sweeping roof design will sit upon a 550space parking garage. Up to 400,000 fans are expected annually.

Dynamic Developments Along the River With more than 3.5 million annual visitors, Newport on the Levee has become a favorite regional attraction. Now, the 360,000-square-foot development is undergoing a transformation into a dynamic new destination with new dining options, authentic experiences, inviting spaces, and events that have the capacity to entertain guests for 18 hours a day.

The Venue Plaza will be linked to future developments at the 25-acre Ovation site via a pedestrian walkway over the recently completed Kentucky Route 9 expansion. The pedestrian bridge will link restaurants, night life, and other entertainment spots that will make up the main pedestrian streets, dubbed Broadway and Main Streets within the Ovation development. Ovation is forecast to generate 6,700 jobs and $1.7 billion

Among the exciting new attractions will be a dazzling, 235 feet Skywheel: a modern observation wheel, more than 20 stories high, with 30 fullyenclosed gondolas offering optimal views of the Ohio River and the Cincinnati skyline. Good Roads Lead to Vibrant Growth The new $1.5 billion Amazon Freight hub at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) is spurring expansion and improvement of road infrastructure. Additional trucks will transport Amazon shipments to and from the new air hub, and thousands of workers will need to get to and from the air hub and CVG.

Among the factors that led Amazon to find CVG appealing is the highway infrastructure that leads to its well-maintained airfields, as well as officials that move to get things done, so an accommodating road infrastructure is a priority. Investing in those roads now means Northern Kentucky not only meets the needs of exciting new business, but remains positioned to appeal to even more new businesseses in the future. In and around the airport, a highway system is being designed and constructed that will accommodate the vehicular traffic for improved traffic flow. Donaldson Road and Mineola Pike will be expanded to five lanes, with two lanes in each direction and a center turn lane, and a new interchange is being created at Interstate 275 and Graves Road. The project has been fast forwarded to accommodate Northern Kentucky’s increasing growth. Once completed, the projects will provide vast improvements for both the region’s businesses and residents. When businesses go looking for the next best place to relocate, they’ll find that the efficient roads lead to, from, and through Northern Kentucky.

Why Do Business in Northern Kentucky? The Reasons are Many

Written by Vicki Prichard

W

hen business leaders and entrepreneurs learn about the dynamic resources and benefits of doing business in Northern Kentucky, they make it their business to do business here.

Northern Kentucky’s pro-business climate is due to many things, but certainly of note are a top performing airport with more than 175 daily departures, outstanding manufacturing companies, a robust logistics and supply chain hub, and businesses that range from aerospace and automotive to food-flavoring and hightech. Take into account the region’s excellent schools, universities, beautiful communities, and a vibrant art, sports, culinary, and entertainment culture, and business leaders find that Northern Kentucky is indeed a great place to work and live. Tap Into Top Talent Northern Kentucky offers employers a skilled workforce. With a labor pool of more than 1.1 million people and nearly 190,000 professionals in Greater Cincinnati, the region connects businesses with top talent. Every year, local universities – Northern Kentucky University, the University of Cincinnati, Xavier, and Thomas More University – produce a skilled, professional workforce from their outstanding business and technology programs. Forty-two percent of the region’s population has earned an associate’s degree or higher.

A Supportive Business Community Business leaders quickly learn that the spirit of being a “good neighbor” is broadly interpreted in Northern Kentucky, making it a highly supportive community that wants to see businesses succeed. “Northern Kentucky has a ‘bring it on’ mentality embodied in our citizens and our leaders,” says Brian Miller, Executive Vice President of the Building Industry Association of Northern Kentucky. “We are all working together to supply plentiful industrial and commercial parcels throughout the region, married with strong infrastructure.” The region has long invested in growing and supporting a successful business climate. Founded in 1987, the Northern Kentucky Tri-County Economic Development Corporation (Tri-ED), has led the successful relocation or expansion of 670 business projects, creating more than 67,000 jobs with a capital investment of more than $8.4 billion. Last year, Site Selection Magazine named Tri-ED one of the top 15 economic development groups in the U.S. for the second year in a row. The organization is poised for its next successful chapter with talented new energy, vision, and leadership. Lee Crume was named President and CEO of Tri-ED in May 2019. He brings more than 25 years of economic development experience to Northern Kentucky. He recently served as global director of business development for JobsOhio, a Columbus-based nonprofit developed to drive job creation and new capital investment.

Businesses can be assured that their employees will find a top tier quality of life in Northern Kentucky, where residents have a “Northern Kentucky is an excellent place to do business,” says broad range of housing options and neighborhoods with a cost Crume. “Our region’s talent and accessibility are key components of living at 7.5% below the national average. The region is home of Tri-ED’s work attracting new companies and quality jobs. In to numerous Fortune 500 headquarters, three professional sports teams, arts and cultural institutions, public and private universities, addition, we’re focused on helping our existing businesses and fostering our start-ups and entrepreneurs.” and nationally-recognized restaurants. 8 NKY RELO / 2019

The organization’s momentum continued in 2019 with the addition of Kimberly Rosetti as Tri-ED’s new Vice President of Economic Development. Rosetti brings a proven record of recruiting companies, helping businesses expand, and working to develop start-ups in Lexington, Kentucky. Geographic Advantages A clear global logistics center, Northern Kentucky recently became home to Atlas Air’s operations center. Atlas is a premier leader and employer in the air cargo industry and its relocation to the region is yet another sign of Northern Kentucky’s booming economy and job creation. Miller points out that the region’s industry and agencies work together to solve problems and deliver solutions for companies looking to call Northern Kentucky their next home. He says the area is becoming a mecca for logistics companies, many of them moving here to springboard off of the coming $1.5 billion Amazon International Prime Air cargo shipping hub.

“If you invest in Northern Kentucky, we invest in you.” Much of the region’s appeal can be described by its own demographics. Census five-year estimates show that 2.16 million people call Greater Cincinnati home. Another critical factor in the region’s success is its central location – where the North and Midwest meet the South. “Our region is practically the center of the nation’s population, geographically,” says Miller. “That means if you produce here, you are closer to the maximum number of consumers than in any other place in the country. Rail, air, river, and interstates round out our ability to move product to market.”

A snapshot of the region’s recent business announcements includes, Inviting Investments The region’s leaders are focused on providing optimum infrastructure in addition to Atlas Air and Amazon, CTI Clinical Trial & for the needs of businesses. For example, four major interstates run Consulting Services, which relocated 250 employees to their new headquarters in Covington’s RiverCenter towers, with plans to add through Northern Kentucky – I-75, I-71, I-275, and I-471. 500 jobs over 12 years. Kroger Co., is investing $17 million in its “When it comes to investments in infrastructure, the community Florence distribution center, creating 250 new jobs, the majority leaders are focused unlike any time in recent history,” says Miller. of them full-time positions. Perfetti Van Melle USA, maker of “That same heightened focus can be seen from the other infrastructure Mentos and Airheads, is expanding its U.S. headquarters in partners in water, electric, sewer, and data. One of our key advantages Erlanger, increasing its packaging division by nearly 50%. is that we are so open to business investment in our region.” Continued growth at the Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky Miller says businesses can be assured that all major areas open for International Airport includes Aeroterm. The company is building investment offer some type of attraction to help companies locate to a new 50,000 square foot facility, with FedEx as its anchor tenant. Northern Kentucky; tax incentives also offer extension terms. Construction is underway for FEAM Aero’s new 103,000 square foot hanger. The airport is quickly developing into the epicenter of cargo in North America, largely thanks to the vision of local leaders. “If you invest in Northern Kentucky, we invest in you,” says Miller.

Spotlight on the Catalytic Fund

Making the river cities better than ever Written by Jill Morenz

W

hat do interesting buildings like Hotel Covington, the Boone Block and Bellevue’s Kent Lofts all have in common? The Catalytic Fund. As a private sector, nonprofit organization, the Catalytic Fund’s mission is to accelerate the revitalization of NKY’s urban river cities. Their three-part strategy is having a ripple effect that is being felt all around the region.

The first part of the strategy is to provide real estate development services to developers interested in creating high quality, high impact projects. The background of the Catalytic Fund’s team brings expertise in real estate finance, historic preservation, urban planning and economic development to every endeavor. The second part is using their $14.5M fund to make targeted investments in complex projects that otherwise would not be able to happen. The organization is able to take on riskier loans because of their strict underwriting criteria and creative use of existing financing tools. When a project has the Catalytic Fund’s stamp of approval, traditional banks are then often willing to support it, as well. 10 NKY RELO / 2019

The third part of the revitalization strategy is to promote the vibrancy of the community, creating events and projects that engage residents and delight visitors. For example, the NKY Picnic Table Project recruited 70 organizations to purchase and paint picnic tables, which were then lined up along the Purple People Bridge for a 600-person picnic. The Catalytic Fund also puts on the popular Beyond the Curb Urban Living Tour series, showcasing the wide variety of housing options in the river cities. Their recent Bourbon Barrel Project resulted in over 100 artist-painted bourbon barrels, each with a solar lighting component, displayed in the entertainment districts of the region. Creating interesting places for people to live, work and gather and then organizing fun ways for them to be engaged—that’s what the Catalytic Fund does. If you’ve been in the river cities lately, you have felt the tangible revitalization energy and can see that urban living is better than ever.

Manhattan Harbor

River City Elegance Manhattan Harbour, Dayton, KY Ariel and Jim Mullin’s home is literally a stone’s throw from the Ohio river. They live in the Manhattan Harbour development in Dayton, KY. The living art that the river provides is the central design element of the Cutter Custom Homes house; most of the windows overlook it and the soft colors of the décor evoke the water without distracting from it. Before buying this house in 2017, the Mullins lived in downtown Cincinnati. They love living in an urban area, in part because of the proximity to their work. Jim grew up in Philadelphia and feels comfortable with the energy of a city. This move put them almost at eye level with the river and just a short walk away from the Manhattan Harbour Marina, where their 26’ open bow Regal is docked. Having such easy access means they boat whenever the weather—and the river—permit and enjoy taking family and friends out for sight-seeing trips. Taking optimal advantage of the views, the house has a covered patio (complete with putting green) and a sizable 2nd floor party room with a roof deck. Other details of the home include custom tile, stunning stained glass windows, stacked stone fireplace and accents and beautiful custom cabinetry. 24 NKY RELO / 2019

Written by Jill Morenz

The Mullins feel so fortunate to live in this peaceful setting. Ariel says, “After a long hard day at work, we enjoy sitting on our back deck watching the barges coming and going and knowing that the captain of the tug is likely in for a long night. Come the weekends, the river is alive with boats, big and small with families and friends, fireworks galore, and music from concerts carrying in the wind.” They are also enjoying the eclectic group of friends they have made since moving here and love being just blocks away from the great restaurants and shopping of Dayton and Bellevue. Licking Riverside Historic District, Covington Located just steps away from the charming George Rogers Clark Park on Covington’s riverfront, this Greek Revival house was built in 1847 for the first female doctor in the Cincinnati region. It has since been expanded and is now around 10,000 square feet. Inside, the classic architectural details are beautifully complimented by a gallery’s worth of stunning contemporary art. In the living room, twin fireplaces and tall windows create a light-filled, welcoming space that is perfect for entertaining. On one end of the room, a grand piano and guitar sit ready for the family’s musicians. The vibrant colors of the paintings, sculptures and statues provide a

counterpoint to the creamy walls and neutral furniture. Many of the pieces come from favorite galleries in New Mexico, purchased during the owners’ frequent trips there. The metal sculpture of a woman’s face above one of the fireplaces is fondly known to the family as Louise, after the home’s original owner. The simple shapes of the large pendant lights offset the detailed plaster ceiling medallions and moldings. Two of the room’s windows are actually doors that lead out to a garden, which is accented with additional pieces of art. This gracious home welcomes guests to an elegant, timeless space with river views and abundant visual treasures. Historic Queen Anne, Ludlow, KY This 1890’s Queen Anne house on a quiet street in Ludlow holds many surprises within its brick walls. It was purchased by interior designer Carey Warman and her husband Jeff 16 years ago. They recently reworked their living and dining rooms to create a pair of sitting rooms that are a triumph of blended contrasts. Carey is an expert in using the interplay between shapes, styles, light and shadow to combine all the things her family loves within these spaces. Carey’s favorite way to design a room is to “lead with art”. She and Jeff have an impressive

collection of paintings, prints and figures that they have complemented with chalky white walls and natural, original wood floors. Carey then layered in a wide variety of furniture styles that no one but she could have predicted would play nicely with each other. A pair of green mid-century armchairs, a Le Courbusier cowhide chaise lounge, a tufted leather daybed and a Lucite stool share space in the front room with a large-scale deer sculpted out of wood, found at the Burlington Antique Show. In the second room, a white linen slipcovered sofa sits in front of a custom bookshelf/cabinet/radiator cover pierced with holes that match the coordinating shutters, all of which Carey designed and local company First Ward Wood built. This cozy room has seven tree stumps gathered in place of a coffee table, “great for the kids”, Carey says. Other fun touches, such as a collection of kewpie dolls, a ceramic table in the shape of a snail and colorful artwork makes this a lovely gathering space for the family of three plus extended family. When talking about the mix of styles in her home, Carey says, “I like everything from every time. When you mix them, it highlights the best of them.” This is certainly true in this endlessly interesting and humor-filled home, jam packed with personality.

Bellevue

Renovated Church, Bellevue, KY Visitors could be excused for perceiving a reverent hush when entering the Bellevue home of Cheri Derrick and Rodger Goforth. After all, their condo is inside a converted Catholic Church. Not only are the walls as solid the builders in 1890 could make them, but the light that filters through the enormous original stained glass windows makes the very air glow with saturated colors. One of five condos created in the decommissioned church, Cheri and Rodger’s makes full use of the soaring 50’ ceilings. A pair of 1960’s light fixtures, which date back to a church renovation, hang in the entry and a spotlighting system in the lofted second floor highlights the round stained glass window, placed high on the former altar wall. Both full bathrooms on the second floor are lit by the tops of two of the other artglass windows. The number and dramatic effect of these windows throughout the home make any additional artwork almost unnecessary. The first floor is perfect for entertaining, with a long sitting room, breakfast area, large dining room and a roomy galley kitchen with a spot for a church pew below another one of the colorful windows. Several accents around the home reference the original church, including a statue of St. Anthony, an upholstered wooden kneeler, a confessional light, rigged to turn on when the powder room is occupied, and the church’s safe, which has been converted into wine 26 NKY RELO / 2019

storage. “That is one piece that will always stay in this home,” says Cheri. “It is too heavy to move.” Before buying this condo, Cheri had lived in downtown Cincinnati and Rodger was out in Hebron. Rodger loves his easy commute to downtown and they both enjoy their proximity to all the shops and restaurants in Bellevue, Dayton and Newport. Cheri jokes that she replaced her river views with stained glass and they both agree that their elegant yet comfortable home suits their lifestyle perfectly. The Ascent, Covington, KY Vicki Herche jumped at the chance to be one of the first tenants in the Ascent. Downsizing from a Hyde Park house, she was exhilarated by the building’s unique architecture, the incredible views and the chance to completely customize her unit. Her living room, dining area and kitchen all share one space to maximize the stunning river and skyline views. Vicki’s condo is on the 17th floor and has a balcony that faces upriver and a terrace on the other side of the building, which showcases incredible sunsets. To help her create the minimalist, contemporary spaces she envisioned, Vicki hired interior designer Renan Menninger of RM Interiors. Renan says they were inspired by “light breaking on the water of the river”, so she and Vicki incorporated reflective elements and sparkle into the home wherever they could. The interior features a lot of white,

Vicki’s favorite color, accented by blue and green. The foyer has a wallpaper made of tiny glass beads, giving it the look of bubbling champagne. The ribbon-style gas fireplace has a surround of milky white glass tiles, which are repeated in the kitchen. The kitchen also has an 11’ countertop bar which has become the place where guests always gather, Vicki says.

jaw-dropping, panoramic view. The model unit was designed with an open floorplan so nothing gets in the way of the 63 linear feet of windows. The furnishings and lighting, chosen by interior designer Pam Irvin, are all contemporary, warmed by wood finishes and the ribbon fireplace.

Vicki loves living in the iconic Ascent. She feels safe and secure there and enjoys walking to the local restaurants and parks on both sides of the river. Covington’s farmers market sets up almost right outside her door and she has had a front row seat to witness the exciting changes in the city over the last decade. As she sits on her balcony to watch the fireworks after a Reds game, she feels truly blessed to live in such an elegant, urban setting.

The kitchen, created by local firm KTCHN, is a triumph of sleek storage. The cabinets have reverse-painted glass fronts and no visible handles, creating an elegant, unobtrusive look. The refrigerator and dishwasher are paneled to match. The backsplash is one sheet of magnetic glass, accented with movable accessories like a knife block and cookbook holder. The pantry is fitted with custom shelving, wine racks and sliding baskets. The luckiest person in this kitchen is whoever gets to do the dishes. The sink faces that incredible view and is set into a veined quartz countertop with a waterfall edge and an overhang with room to seat four.

Skypoint Condos, Newport, KY Up on the hill above downtown Newport, you can see for miles. Imagine standing in your living room or on your balcony, watching the sun set over Cincinnati and the Ohio River. The future owners of the Skypoint condos will have that pleasure every day. Built in 1886 as an orphanage, it was turned into the Baptist Convalescent Home in 1953 with additions built in the 60’s and 80’s. The property was sold in 2017 and it is now being renovated into beautiful, spacious condos—and almost all of them have that

The floors in the main living area are hardwood in a soft gray tone. The two bedrooms and den are carpeted. All the closets (the master bedroom’s is drool-worthy) were designed by California Closets. The unit has two full baths and a half bath. The master bathroom has an unusual wave-like tile treatment on the wall and a contemporary soaking tub. This condo’s luxury details and elegant finishes garner almost as many accolades as that killer view.

CAMPBELL COUNTY Campbell County is where the Bluegrass meets the city skyline. A first-class location to work, live, learn, and play, you’ll find global connections, rich cultural heritage, outstanding educational institutions, vibrant entertainment, and an excellent environment for business and family.

A first-class location to work, live, learn and play with global connections and a rich cultural heritage.

Surrounded by rivers, home to Newport on the Levee, award-winning Main Streets, and a rich agricultural history, Campbell County has something for everyone — from Fortune 500 companies to vineyards and farmland. Venture into the rural regions of Campbell County and you’ll find one of the nation’s oldest wine regions. That’s right, before Napa Valley was known as America’s wine capital, roughly one-third of the national wine output was produced in Campbell County, and its share was 40 percent of Kentucky’s wine production. Today, modern wine producers are reinvigorating the industry in Campbell County at StoneBrook Winery, Camp Springs Vineyard, Seven Wells Winery, and Generation Hill Winery. In Kentucky, rolling landscapes make for farmlands and horseback riding. Families

can saddle up at equestrian venues such as Misty Ridge Farm, Saddle Lake Equestrian Center, Lazy K Ranch, and Stonebridge Stables. Marrying small town charm with a decidedly urban feel, Campbell County’s river cities along the Ohio River offer a wide range of housing options. Whether you’re looking for an exquisitely crafted condo with Cincinnati skyline views, a 100 year-old home in Newport’s Historic District, or a brand new home with a small town ambiance and great schools, you will find what you’re looking for in Campbell County. Residents also benefit from a cost of living that is well below the national average. Northern Kentucky University (NKU) is centrally located in Campbell County’s Highland Heights community. The commonwealth’s fastest developing institution of higher education, NKU

has more than 15,000 students and 2,400 faculty and staff. The institution has distinguished itself as a regional academic and community leader. The university has seen a strong capital investment, including the 2008 opening of its $37 million, 144,000 square foot student union building, a $60 million, 9,400-seat arena, and nationally recognized College of Informatics at Griffin Hall, a $52.8 million, 110,000 square foot facility. The campus is also home to the Salmon P. Chase College of Law, the largest law school in Kentucky. In 2018, the University of Kentucky partnered with NKU and St. Elizabeth Healthcare to open a regional medical school campus at NKU. Sports lovers, if you’re looking for top notch professional and collegiate sports in your backyard, you’ve come to the right place.

CITIES & NEIGHBORHOODS Alexandria Only 30 minutes from downtown Cincinnati and CVG Airport, Alexandria offers public and private schools, is minutes from Northern Kentucky University and an easy commute to the University of Cincinnati, Xavier University, and Thomas More College. The city’s tagline, “Where the City Meets the Country,” speaks to its blend of urban convenience and quiet country living. Bellevue This quaint, walkable, vibrant, riverfront community across from downtown Cincinnati is home to more than 5,000 residents. Bellevue boasts a variety of attractive architecture that appeals to both millennials and empty-nesters. The city’s main street is lined with local businesses, retail, and culinary venues. Camp Springs Settled in the 1800’s by a group of German settlers from the Rhine River Valley, the buildings in Camp Springs feature German architecture, constructed from local limestone. These unique, and very desirable historic homes, were built into the hillsides, giving access from two levels. Camp Springs is also home to StoneBrook Winery and Camp Springs Winery.

Campbell County’s Highland Heights is home to the Northern Kentucky University Norse NCAA Division II program, where you can watch the two-time NCAA Champion Women’s Basketball team dominate in the state-of-the-art BB&T Arena. The multi-year NCAA Regional Champion Men’s Soccer team competes at its new $6.5 million stadium. Just minutes across the Ohio River, there’s something for practically everyone: Cincinnati Reds baseball, NFL’s Cincinnati Bengals, NHL’s Cincinnati Cyclones, FC Cincinnati, Cincinnati’s professional soccer team, University of Cincinnati Bearcats, and the Xavier University Musketeers; you are also only an hour north of the University of Kentucky Wildcats in Lexington.

Cold Spring Located in northern Campbell County, Cold Spring is only minutes from Northern Kentucky University, and is home to the national headquarters of the veteran service organization, Disabled American Veterans. The city’s name refers to a cold stream which for many years served as the sole source of drinking water. The community was founded prior to 1800. Fort Thomas Located on the southern bank of the Ohio River and the site of an 1890 Army post, Fort Thomas is the largest city in Campbell County. It boasts one of the region’s finest independent public school districts; their three elementary schools and high school are consistently ranked among the top in the country. Downtown Fort Thomas is home to a business district that features local businesses, banks, and shops. Highland Heights Nestled in the region’s hills just seven miles south of Cincinnati, this quiet suburb got its start as a farm community in the 1920’s. Today, Highland Heights succeeds in maintaining its small-town feel with easy access to a vibrant metropolitan life, and is home to one of Kentucky’s fastest growing universities, Northern Kentucky University. Newport Situated at the confluence of the Ohio River and the Licking River, Newport features ease of access to Cincinnati and CVG Airport - but this city has so much to offer you might not want to leave. With many shopping and dining options, Newport is home to six National Register historic districts and one local historic district. Nine neighborhoods make up the city and neighborhood groups take great pride in them. Steeped in history, and particularly known for its 1940s and ‘50s gambling halls and Vegas-style nightclubs, today’s Newport is rich in development and redevelopment. Newport boasts many tourist destinations, including the Newport Aquarium, World Peace Bell, and Newport on the Levee. Southgate A vibrant and historic community of roughly 3,800 residents, Southgate is just a few miles from downtown Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky University. Wilder A unique town with a mix of rural, suburban, and urban settings, Wilder has a growing business community, which features everything from heavy industrial to professional offices and commercial attractions. Downtown Cincinnati is only five minutes away from this suburb, which borders Northern Kentucky University. The city offers a range of housing styles and features one of the lowest property tax rates in Northern Kentucky.

Celebrating 225 Years, Newport’s Storied Past Includes Tales of Gangsters and Gambling Written by Vicki Prichard

C

elebrating its 225th year, today’s Newport will be remembered for stateof-the-art entertainment venues, restaurants, retail, and posh residences along its riverfront. With the new Ovation concert venue underway, and a $100 million renovation on Newport on the Levee, Newport’s future is vibrant and bright – and it’s one that springs from a colorful past. There was a time when this Northern Kentucky river city, once known as “Sin City,” just might have become Las Vegas. Business, or rather, Gambling as Usual On May1, 1951, the Kefauver Committee, a U.S. senate special committee that was created to investigate the growing influence of organized crime, produced the results of its year-long investigation. The report declared Newport, Kentucky as one of the worst gambling spots in the nation. It looked like Northern Kentucky’s dirty little secret wasn’t really so “little”, and also not a “secret”. In fact, there were no fewer than 40 full44 NKY RELO / 2019

scale gambling venues and, if one counted Covington and Newport, at least 200 taverns where gambling was taking place. Farther south, one could gamble in Erlanger and Fort Mitchell as well. At the time when the committee’s investigators visited the region, gambling operations were quite visible, especially in Campbell County, so the casual observer might get the impression that gambling was entirely legal.

Harold Barkhau, a man of high principals and morals. The Candidate and the Stripper Around that same time, editors at the Louisville Courier-Journal assigned a new reporter named Hank Messick to cover what had become a perennial story – crime and corruption in Northern Kentucky. Messick was a tenacious investigator.

In 1957, Esquire magazine sent a reporter to Newport to write about America’s most wicked city. The reporter estimated that the region was attracting a million visitors a year and bringing in an estimated $30 million a year on gambling and women, with annual political payoffs around $1million.

After numerous efforts by Rev. Barkhau’s group were unsuccessful in shutting down the gambling, they realized they needed to change the local political landscape. During a trip to Frankfort to discuss ways to combat the corruption, Governor Burt Combs suggested they organize a committee of 500 or so concerned citizens. They did as they were advised.

But it wouldn’t last forever. A group of area ministers and concerned residents, most of them from Fort Thomas, formed a social action committee. The key leader of the committee was Rev.

This new committee searched for political leaders who would help them combat corruption from the inside. They found the perfect candidate for sheriff in football star George Ratterman. An ex-quarterback for the

Cleveland Browns, Ratterman was from a well-respected Fort Thomas family. He had the ideal combination of idealism and toughness. He ran as a reform party candidate. What happened next played out like high drama. A lot of people were making a living through gambling and they stuck together. Ratterman found himself having a tough time winning support. Even so, the mob was taking no chances, so they orchestrated a frame-up. They hired a photographer to take compromising photographs of Ratterman. Unbeknownst to the mob, the photographer’s mother was a member Rev. Barkhau’s church. Meanwhile, Tito Corinci, a former football player himself and owner of the Glen Rendezvous and the Tropicana, invited Ratterman to discuss the state of affairs in Newport. Ratterman was slipped a mickey, transported to a room in the Glen Rendezvous hotel, and put in bed with a stripper named April Flowers. The authorities are called – as well

as the press – and Ratterman was hauled off to jail amidst a media field day. A parade of mob witnesses came forth to testify against him. And then, the bomb dropped. When the photographer hired to help frame Ratterman took the stand during the trial, the defense attorneys were ready. They asked the photographer if he has been hired in advance to take the photos of Ratterman. His answer, “yes”, meant the game was over for the conspirators. Ratterman was exonerated and swept into office as sheriff. Corinci and Flowers were indicted, sentenced, and later convicted. Shutdown in NKY, Gambling Grows in the Desert Ratterman’s victory proved a turning point for Newport. Along with help from the Alcoholic Beverage Control investigators, fire marshals, and others sent in by Gov. Combs, as well as teams of federal investigators at the direction of U.S. Attorney General Bobby Kennedy,

there was suddenly a lot less organized sin in Sin City. With gambling and prostitution largely shut down, Newport’s economy took a fairly steep dive. Many of the people who had worked in the industry moved to Las Vegas. Tragedy Ignites More than a decade after Newport’s gambling made headlines, another Northern Kentucky venue would command the nation’s attention.

In 1977, Beverly Hills Supper Club made headlines of a different sort, as the third deadliest nightclub fire in U.S. history. On the night of May 28, with a large Memorial Day Weekend crowd, fire and panic broke out, taking 167 lives and destroying the building. As a result of the tragedy, the aluminum wiring that caused the fire was removed from the market, and furniture manufacturers now make furnishings from materials that do not release toxic gases when they burn. Kentucky’s fire codes became some of the toughest in the nation and a model for other states to prevent similar tragedies.

The Beverly Hills Supper Club was a major attraction in the region. Located in the small city of Southgate, the club booked top acts from Las Vegas, Nashville, Los Angeles, and “Newport has a dramatic past New York, including Liberace and a promising future,” says and the Andrews Sisters. In the Dr. Paul Tenkotte, professor of early 1930s, it was a popular history at Northern Kentucky place for upscale dining and University, and local historian. gambling, but that ended in 1961 with the reform efforts to “As a community, Newport has faced many challenges, from clean up local towns. In 1971, floods to gambling to urban the club reopened and was an decay. Yet, the city has always instant success, attracting top bounced back. Its citizens have talent and affluent customers. been resilient and visionary.”

Tenkotte says he thinks the most exciting projects are occurring in the city’s west side. “Historic industrial properties are being restored, added to, and serving as incubators for new industries and businesses,” says Tenkotte. He points out that very few communities are preserving their industrial heritage the way that Newport is and feels the city is to be commended for this. He explains that Newport is also “preserving local cultural heritage, with the Newport Museum at the old Southgate Street School. The downtown is vibrant and alive, as is Newport Pavilion’s shopping center. I can’t wait for the new music venue and the updates to Newport on the Levee.” Today, visitors can glimpse Newport’s notorious past, exploring the streets where the mob made millions through the Newport Gangster Tour. Illegal gambling might be gone, but the landmarks of its story can be seen throughout the city.

It is my pleasure to welcome you to Northern Kentucky! Campbell County has been my home, as well as where I’ve run my family business, for my entire life. We are a community of more than 90,000 of the hardest-working people you will ever know. More than that, within a few minutes’ drive of downtown Cincinnati, you will find active farmland and vineyards in the southern part of our county, a major institution of higher education—Northern Kentucky University—in the middle section of the county, and thriving urban areas dotted along the southern side of the Ohio River in our northernmost areas. This county, while close in proximity to all the amenities of the Cincinnati region, offers plenty to do for residents, business owners, and visitors alike. We are home to one of the newest members of the Craft Tour of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail—New Riff Distilling. You can take in a Norse basketball game at BB&T Arena at NKU or find yourself touring beautiful, historic homes in the East Row of Newport. Our county is home to headquarters and manufacturing operations of major regional and national businesses, and I am proud that we have several of the finest school districts in the entire Commonwealth of Kentucky right here. Please take advantage of all we have to offer. I assure you that Campbell County and Northern Kentucky will not disappoint. Welcome!

You might say, it’s the best of all worlds. The third most populous county in Kentucky, Kenton County has no shortage of outstanding schools, libraries, parks, excellent health care facilities, entertainment, dining, and shopping — all minutes away from an international airport, Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport (CVG). Venture a little farther south from these river cities and you’ll find suburban communities that are considered some of the finest to live and raise a family and are known for their outstanding schools. Hometown pride reigns supreme in these welcoming communities. 48 NKY RELO / 2019

CITIES & NEIGHBORHOODS Bromley The settlement of Bromley can be traced to the year 1784, when Prettyman Perry received a 2,000 acre land grant from the United States Government. Soon thereafter, the Perry family began constructing a home on the property. This home, called the Landmark, still stands today on Shelby Street. Bromley continues to be a small, tight-knit residential community. The churches and volunteer fire department draw the residents together and provide a strong sense of belonging and community pride. Covington There’s a reason northern Kentuckians #LovetheCov. Covington, Kenton’s vibrant river city, located at the confluence of the Ohio and Licking Rivers, across from Cincinnati, was founded in 1815. This river city is a destination unto itself for both businesses and residents. The city embraces and celebrates the economic, cultural and racial diversity of its residents and is experiencing a true renaissance that includes both new and historic housing opportunities, high-tech firms, creative businesses and the arts. Nineteen distinct neighborhoods make up Covington and range in population from several hundred to 10,000 people. Historic preservation is greatly valued in this city and you’ll find that many neighborhoods contain one of Covington’s 16 National Register Historic Districts.

The Hotel Covington, a $21.5 million transformation of the city’s old Coppin’s Department Store building, Braxton Brewing Company, and culinary venues in the city’s MainStrasse District, are but a few samplings of Covington’s nod to its past as it embraces an exciting future. Erlanger The City of Erlanger, Kentucky is located in the heart of the tri-state area which includes Kentucky, Ohio, and Indiana. This Northern Kentucky city is in the east-central region of the U.S. and is the third largest

city in Kenton County, with much to offer both residents and businesses. Fairview - located in southern Kenton County, primarily along state route 177, the city was incorporated in 1957 to avoid annexation by Covington. Its history is tied to the adjacent railroad, and the name “Fairview” was suggested by one of the residents. The city of Fairview is zoned agricultural and has a population of under 200. Fort Mitchell neighborhoods offer charm, as well as stunning parks, and an excellent recreation program. Residents believe in a strong sense of community, where people care about each other and their city, and it is a great place to raise a family. The city is home to two Blue Ribbon National Schools of Excellence: Beechwood Independent, consistently one of the top public schools in the state, with grades K through 12, and Blessed Sacrament, a parochial school with grades K thru 8. Covington, Cincinnati, Newport and Florence are all within a 10 minute drive. Ludlow Between 1894 and 1917, the little river city of Ludlow was home to the Ludlow Lagoon Amusement Park, a major recreational center for the Greater Cincinnati area, featuring a large lake with sandy beaches, a roller coaster over the water, a carousel with handcarved wooden figures, and a miniature railroad ride. Today, Ludlow is known not only for its close-knit neighborhoods and excellent independent school district, but also its increasingly vibrant business district along Elm Street, where you can find a growing number of retail and culinary venues. In

keeping with its history of the unusual, today Ludlow is home to Circus Mojo, a youth and adult circus arts program that allows its customers a chance to experience the thrill of walking the tightrope, juggling, and plate spinning, as well as Bircus Brewing Company, where the “surreal world of circus meets the love of beer.” The city’s charm appeals to millennials and empty nesters, who are settling into historic homes for both business and residence. Park Hills Nestled in the rolling hills of northern Kentucky, Park Hills is home to 3,000 people. With the added convenience of nearby shopping, sporting events, concerts, and more, Park Hills is truly a hidden gem. Park Hills is also home to two blue ribbon-winning private Catholic schools: Notre Dame Academy for girls, and Covington Catholic High School for boys. Both of these institutions are known for strong academic programs, as well as athletic excellence. Ryland Heights This small community is surrounded by a stunning countryside and panoramic view of the Licking River and nearby lakes. A group of businessmen from Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky opened what is now called Ryland Country Club. The name Little Switzerland was bestowed upon the private club by its wellknown member, local artist

Frank Duveneck. The city has a volunteer fire department and ambulance service and Ryland Heights Elementary School, which is part of the Kenton County School system. Taylor Mill is a friendly, vibrant community in Northern Kentucky with a small town feel and a big city focus. Taylor Mill is home to nearly 7,000 residents and a mix of businesses, including a new downtown/commercial district. The city offers easy access to I-275, downtown Cincinnati and the airport. “People ask me every day, ‘What in the world is going on in downtown Covington? You have an excitement there I haven’t seen in years.’ It’s true. Covington in 2020 is crackling with an energy throughout our urban core. Historic buildings are being transformed into luxury townhomes and upper-loft apartments. Sidewalks are busy with visitors walking to an expanding collection of unique restaurants and trendy bars, or lingering at streetside tables. Cutting-edge employers are moving in and outof-town investors don’t want to be left out. Why? Because Covington has a cool vibe that entices people and businesses to move here. Our architecture, history, and walkability create an authentic sense of place. Our access to regional attractions and our quality of life are second to none. Our residents are welcoming. Look, if you want a cookie-cutter, strip-mall city, we’re not it. But if you’re intrigued by a place with an edgy feel, that brims with unique activities and shops, that embraces diversity and laughs with quirkiness, and that pursues smart-city approaches with a City Hall focused on customer service, come check us out.”

GRANT COUNTY

Grant County is Northern Kentucky’s southernmost county, located at the very top of the Bluegrass Region’s “Golden Triangle,” and just an hour drive from Lexington and Louisville, Kentucky, and Cincinnati, Ohio.

In the rolling hills of Northern Kentucky’s southernmost county, you’ll find historic sites, the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery North, the Ark Encounter, a lifesize Noah’s Ark park featuring the largest wooden structure in the world, familyfriendly places to boat, fish, and golf, and plenty of venues to shop and eat. Home to more than 26,000 residents, Grant County is the ninth fastest growing county in the commonwealth. Its schools are staffed with innovative and well-trained instructional teams, with 75 percent of the teachers possessing a master’s degree or higher. 56 NKY RELO / 2019

A county rich in natural beauty with lakes, streams, ridges and rolling hills, Grant County offers boundless cultural, educational, employment, and business opportunities. Residents and businesses enjoy the advantage of the convenience of transportation, with I-75 easily connecting them to marketplaces on all corners of the compass. Only a 30-minute drive from the CVG International Airport, Grant County offers quick access to anywhere in the world. Its excellent location means it is also close to nationally-ranked urban city services, marketplaces, and entertainment, such as the Kentucky Horse Park, Keeneland Race Course, professional sports and the arts. A community that takes great pride in its heritage, Grant County is a blend of a farming economy, safe schools, beautiful churches, and engaged and caring people.

CITIES & NEIGHBORHOODS Corinth The smallest of Grant County’s four incorporated areas, this charming rural enclave is a sweet slice of Americana, with a country store and other small businesses. In 1930, the Corinth basketball team not only won the Kentucky State Championship, but went to the national tournament in Chicago where its “fabulous five” starters took third place in the nation. Crittenden There’s a good chance that you’ve heard about the tiny little town of Crittendon because of one of its more famous — and favorite — residents. In 2001, Crittendon’s Rodger Bingham, a retired school teacher and farmer, became a beloved national figure when he appeared on television’s Survivor: The Australian Outback. Bingham was a solid representative of this small town that provides quiet living with easy proximity to metropolitan venues. Dry Ridge A friendly little city, Dry Ridge is home to the last stagecoach stop left standing in Kentucky, Sherman Tavern. You will also find the I-75 Outlet Center, an antique mall, the historic Hogan House Inn, and charming local businesses. Williamstown Home to the worldwide attraction, the Ark Encounter, Williamstown is quickly growing from a bedroom community to a destination for families and vacation hub. The full-size Noah’s Ark, spanning 510 feet long, 85 feet wide, and 51 feet high, is an engineering marvel. Visitors to the park explore biblical history, fossil hunts, and zip lines. The park has spurred new hotel and restaurant development, but Williamstown is holding on to its small town charm. The city also has excellent schools, a hospital, parks, Williamstown Lake, and ample recreational and cultural activities.

GALLATIN COUNTY

Small in size but big on hospitality, Gallatin County has transformed from quiet rural farmland to a vibrant growing community. It is nestled on the fertile banks of the Ohio River in Northern Kentucky in the “Golden Triangle,” of Cincinnati, Louisville and Lexington. Its county tagline is “Little, but in the middle of it all.”

This rural gem, which boasts scenic waterways, picturesque country roads, quaint communities and great schools, is not only a wonderful place to live, but a frequent destination for the region’s urban dwellers who seek Gallatin County’s bucolic setting along the river. Race car aficionados know Gallatin County as the Race Car Capital of the State, thanks to the Kentucky Speedway, located in Sparta. If water sports are more your speed, you’ll feel right at home in Gallatin County, where the Ohio River winds along, offering two marinas for your boating pleasure. 58 NKY RELO / 2019

Little, but in the middle of it all. CITIES & NEIGHBORHOODS Warsaw Situated on the banks of the Ohio River between Cincinnati, Lexington, and Louisville, Warsaw is also located between Kentucky Speedway and Belterra Casino. But Warsaw’s real appeal lies in its quiet, charming community — a Tom Sawyer-esque locale. Sparta The tiny town of Sparta began as a village named Brock’s Station back in 1802, and in the mid-1800’s it became a stop on the Louisville and Nashville Railroad. Today the CSX trains still run through the town, and so do some of the racing world’s fastest drivers at Kentucky Speedway. This 1.5-mile tri-oval speedway put this little town on the map, hosting ARCA, NASCAR, and Indy Racing League each year. Glencoe This sweet, little Kentucky town has a population of around 360 and you can find hometown goodness in local venues like the Exit 62 Truck Stop for family-style dining.

ARTS & MUSIC Street Art: Northern Kentucky’s Murals Written by Jill Morenz

E

xploring NKY’s river cities leads to unexpected discoveries— quirky little shops, intriguing restaurants, lovely parks and larger-than-life art. The old brick buildings of the cities of Covington, Newport and Bellevue are like blank canvasses, just waiting to be turned into eye-catching works of art.

The Public Arts Network of NKY has cataloged the murals, statues and historic architecture, turning them into free self-guided tours on the www.NKYArtTours.com website. Each piece has a story behind it and visitors to the site can use the interactive maps to find them. The stories are inspiring, tragic and even spooky. The Riverside Drive Statue Tour includes the likeness of Captain Mary B. Greene, the first woman to become a licensed riverboat captain along the Ohio River. She died onboard one of her boats at the age of 79. Since then, her ghost has been seen numerous times and has been credited with saving the boat from mechanical failure and orchestrating a meeting between two people who later married. The eighteen murals on the Riverfront Flood Wall Mural Tour can be seen from Cincinnati and represent the rich history of the area from 8000 BC to 2008 AD. The Flight of the Garner Family 64 NKY RELO / 2019

depicts the daring escape of the Garners, who were slaves from Kentucky. The winter of 1856 was the coldest in 60 years and the Ohio River froze, providing a treacherous nighttime route for the family. They were all later recaptured and their fight for freedom and the tragedies that followed have inspired poems and paintings, as well as the book and movie, “Beloved”. The Central Business District Tour features one of the most visible murals in Covington, known as the Space Dog. It is painted on the north side of the Boone Block, an 1890’s mixed use building that originally housed an attorney’s office. In 2012, an international group of artists known as The London Police painted one of their cheery dog figures, known as “lads”, to liven up the old liquor store that was there at the time. In 2016, the Boone Block was redeveloped into six stylish attached single family homes. The London Police returned to Covington and completed the lighthearted mural. They included a number of fun details, such as the man peeking out of the dog spaceship. He is Mike Amann, an artist and designer who first convinced The London Police to come to Covington. In 2018, the framework for a living wall was installed on the bottom part of the mural. Plants have been growing in this vertical garden ever since. The combination of mural and living wall is unusual, making this one of the country’s only Living Murals. Discover many other stories like these, along with exciting original art, as you explore the urban neighborhoods of the river cities. www.NKYArtTours.com can show you the way.

BREWERIES AND DISTILLERIES FOLLOWING THE B-LINE

Exploring Northern Kentucky’s bourbon experience Written by Jill Morenz Northern Kentucky is officially known as the Gateway to Bourbon Country. To highlight the best bourbon-related locations in the region, meetNKY developed The B-Line. The distilleries, bars and restaurants included on The B-Line have met rigorous criteria and offer a deliciously fun experience for fans of Kentucky’s favorite spirit. The B-Line’s website is www.FindYourSippingPoint.com and offers an interactive map for the 20 featured locations, as well as suggested itineraries. “B-Liners” can grab a passport-style guide to collect stamps from each location they visit. Uploading a photo of yourself with your stamped guide will earn you free B-Line swag. But the real rewards are the sights, smells and tastes of The B-Line experience. 68 NKY RELO / 2019

Northern Kentucky has five bourbon distilleries, all of which are included on The B-Line. New Riff Distilling is located in Newport, Second Sight Spirits is in Ludlow, and Boone County Distilling Company is in Independence. Head a little farther south and you will find The Old Pogue Distillery in Maysville and Neeley Family Distillery in Sparta. Each distillery has its own traditions and unique take on the centuries-old process of making bourbon. Taking a tour of one of these distilleries will give you a new appreciation for all the work and time that goes into crafting these whiskies. After you’ve seen how bourbon is made, stop by one of The B-Line’s bars and restaurants for some creative cocktails. Each bar carries at least 100 brands of bourbon and the restaurants carry at least 50 brands. Many of the restaurants also feature bourbon in their recipes, such as the Purple Poulet’s “Kentucky Coq Au Vin”, made with a bourbon brine. Tousey House Tavern serves an entrée of pan roasted chicken thighs with bourbon-shallot cream. The B-Line makes it easy to explore Northern Kentucky’s bourbon heritage, while sampling the best bourbons available. Find your sipping point!

NORTHERN KENTUCKY BOURBON BARREL PROJECT CELEBRATING BOURBON, ART AND NKY Written by Jill Morenz

2019 was a colorful year for the artists and businesses that participated in the NKY Bourbon Barrel Project. Sponsors and artists were matched to create custom art on reclaimed bourbon barrels. Each barrel has a solar lighting component that provides light to shine out of the holes and cutouts the artists included in their designs. The 107 barrels serve as both public art and wayfinding in the entertainment districts of Dayton, Ludlow and Florence. Visitors can follow the gently glowing barrels from one cool place to the next. 70 NKY RELO / 2019

The project was a partnership between the NKY Chamber of Commerce and the Catalytic Fund. Brent Cooper, President of the Chamber, loves the project because “bourbon is a part of Kentucky’s culture and this is a fun way of telling our story while highlighting all the amazing businesses and community venues we have.” Jill Morenz, Director of Community Initiatives and Communications for the Catalytic Fund, was impressed by the response from the artist community. “A lot of the artists who heard about the project told their friends. We ended up with more than 90 of the most talented and creative local artists who were willing to put all this work into making these beautiful barrels.” The barrels will remain on display until the end of September. When you see them, take a quick snapshot and post it with the hashtag NKYBourbonBarrels. Cooper says, “at the end of the day, visitors will be able to see the connections we have through these pieces of art.”

DINING Beyond the Bustle of the City, Tempting Tastes are Calling Written by Vicki Prichard

W

hat’s for dinner? Friend, let us make a few suggestions. Northern Kentucky has ramped up its culinary game to nationally eye-catching standards. The Baker’s Table in Newport made Eater’s “Top 16 Best New Restaurants in America”. Southern Living Magazine’s Culinary Road Map to Dining in the South includes Covington’s Otto’s restaurant, featured for its southern classics Hot Brown and fried green tomatoes.

You can find fine food all over Northern Kentucky. Let us lead you out into the suburban communities and rural settings, and you’ll come upon some culinary treasures. In Union, Butcher Betty’s Farmstand Market & Café believes in the local farmer, local cottage producers, and the local food system, all of which translates into fresh and flavorful offerings. In addition to a top tier menu of local specialties, patrons can sign up for classes and special dinners. Walt’s Hitching Post in Fort Wright dates back to 1942, when Walt and Mary Ballanger began serving up their legendary smoke house ribs. They sold the restaurant to their bartender, Bill Melton, who chose the name Hitching Post from the cast-iron posts where customers could tie up their horses. Under the current ownership of Bronson Trebbi and Donny Arnsperger, Walt’s is still serving savory slabs of ribs and baskets of their Salted Rye Bread (no one can eat just one slice). 72 NKY RELO / 2019

A little pizzeria in Fort Mitchell is offering Neapolitan cuisine done right. Eric and Amy Redfield’s Camporosso breathed new life into a dilapidated 1920s-era gas station, making a name for itself in the regional pizza scene with their brick oven pizzas. The Redfields were serious about pizza and trained at Tony Gemignani’s International School of Pizza and The Roman Pizza Academy with Massimilano Saieva. When Pizza Today stopped in for a visit, it was clear that Camporosso has become known for serving up seriously good slices. When The Bourbon Review magazine published its annual list of America’s Best Bourbon Bars last year, Burlington’s Tousey House Tavern was near the top of the list (Newport’s Prohibition Bourbon Bar was number one). But the Tousey House is serving up much more than fine amber brews – not that that’s not enough! Tousey House offers both southern cuisine and hospitality. Located in the heart of historic Burlington, the family-owned restaurant is a perfect retreat from the urban bustle, whether you’re looking for a special occasion dinner or a family-style chicken night. Laissez le bon temps rouler at Knotty Pine on the Bayou in Cold Spring! This notable Northern Kentucky restaurant features Cajun and Creole recipes. Oysters? You bet – on the half shell, fried, or Bienville. Have a hankerin’ for alligator? Knotty Pine serves a lightly battered deep fried version served on creole sauce. Tucked away behind a string of chain restaurants in Florence, Miyoshi is a little gem of a venue serving authentic Japanese food. Using seasonal ingredients and native Japanese delicacies, Myoshi also has an authentic Tatami room for the ultimate experience in Japanese cuisine, the perfect for “something different” for business lunch meetings or a family night out.

FAMILY FUN IN NKY

Y

ou’ll hear it said time and again: Northern Kentucky is a great place to raise a family. From our community-minded developments, to our topperforming schools, we know happy, healthy families make our region great. That’s why you’ll find plenty of family-friendly attractions here.

Northern Kentucky museums offer a huge range of experiences. Run your fingers along a shark’s back, dig deep for arrowheads, or walk where the Woolly mammoth once roamed. Museums and cultural experiences can be found at Behringer Crawford Museum; Aronoff Center for the Arts; The Carnegie; Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Cincinnati Music Hall; Krohn Conservatory (experience plants and butterflies from across the globe); Creation Museum & Answers in Genesis; Harriet Beecher Stowe House, James A. Ramage Civil War Museum (learn our local war history); Wright Patterson Air Force Museum, Hebrew Union College Skirball Museum; National Underground Railroad Freedom Center; Vent Haven Museum (a ventriloquist’s dream); Taft Museum of Art; American Sign Museum; have your own science experiment at Cincinnati Museum Center; Big Bone Lick Historic Site (where Woolly mammoths roamed); Dinsmore Homestead (early 19th-century lifestyles); Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame Museum; Contemporary Arts Center; Tri-State Warbird Museum; Campbell County Log Cabin Museum; Center for Holocaust & Humanity Museum; German Heritage Museum; Ark Encounter; and the Lloyd Library & Museum (the origins of pharmaceuticals).

What else is there to do? Soar down a waterslide, tailgate at a professional sports game, watch race horses round the track, or enjoy an evening of live music. Take a dive at Silverlake, ride a coaster at King’s Island—the fun never has to stop! Love professional sports? We’ve got them – Bengals, Reds, Cyclones, FC Cincinnati, or courtside at the ATP. How about horses? Well, it is Kentucky! The Keeneland racetrack’s fall and spring meets are just an hour’s drive south. If you want more fun, you can splash the day away at Coney Island, enjoy the symphony from a hillside on a summer night, or take aim at Lazer Kraze in Erlanger. In Northern Kentucky, family fun is yours for the making. When you need a break for something sweet, you don’t need to go far. Schneider’s Sweet Shop in Bellevue has been serving time-tested family recipes since 1939, including Opera Creams and Ice Balls (flavored shaved ice surrounding an ice cream center). Newport’s Sweet Tooth Candies makes small batch chocolates and did you know that Airhead and Mentos candies are also made right here in NKY? Graeter’s Ice Cream is nationally known, but in NKY, it’s right in our own backyard. If you’d like a road map to your next sweet fix, follow the Sugar and Spice Trail, created by Kentucky Department of Tourism and on the KentuckyTourism.com website.

Secret Northern Kentucky

The weird, wonderful and obscure in our region Written by Jill Morenz

I

n 2017, author and award-winning travel writer Kathy Witt was asked to write the Cincinnati edition of the Reedy Press “Secret” series. Being a lover of both exploration and secrets, she couldn’t resist. Her book, Secret Cincinnati, was published in 2018 and is a treasure trove of delightful, quirky places located in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.

Kathy’s book is a popular gift from realtors to their new home buyers because it provides such a fun way to explore the region. Even Kathy, who writes for Kentucky Living magazine and many other news outlets and knows a lot about popular tourist spots, discovered so many hidden gems. She says, “it was fun but challenging and gave me the opportunity to see Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky in a whole new, wonderful light.” Kathy selected three of her favorite Northern Kentucky “secrets” from the book to share here. JANE’S SADDLEBAG, UNION With its Kids Village and Kids Playland, corn pit, petting zoo, and life-size replica of a 1700s flatboat, Jane’s Saddlebag is the very definition of fresh-air family fun. And not just for the kiddos. Mom and Dad can sample gold medalist JSB Reserve Bourbon or sip regional wines at the Whine Shoppe, and everyone can rummage among the goodies at Wyatt’s General Store to pick out souvenirs. 88 NKY RELO / 2019

Far from city commotion and sheltered amidst acres of trees, this supersized playground stretches out along the banks of the Ohio River and stands ready to entertain. Shout “ahoy!” from the pirate ship. Peek inside an Indian Longhouse. Meet the farm’s goats, chickens, and pigs. Snap a selfie in the jail cell. Bounce along the grounds on a haywagon ride. Jane’s also hosts an annual wine festival and arts and crafts show and Friday night steak dinners and cruise-ins (selected dates). Speaking of, plan a meal stop at the restaurant during your visit. Does it feel like you just walked into grandma’s kitchen? That was the intent when the family that owns Jane’s Saddlebag set up housekeeping. Everyone can go elbows-off-the-table for a homecooked meal here. By the way, Jane was the original owner of the land, and “saddlebag” refers to that rural style of home whose two rooms share a chimney, not the pouches that hang from a saddle on the back of a horse. Jane’s Saddlebag: 13989 Ryle Rd., Union, KY. No admission; some activities have a small fee. VENT HAVEN MUSEUM, FORT MITCHELL Visitors from all parts of the globe travel to a quiet residential neighborhood on the Kentucky side of the Ohio River to see the collection of Cincinnati native William Shakespeare Berger. Berger is the founder of Vent Haven Museum, the only museum in the world dedicated to the centuries-old performance art of ventriloquism.

Although not a professional ventriloquist, Berger amassed a staggering number of dummies and puppets over a fortyyear period. And not only dummies, but photos, scripts, memorabilia, playbills, posters, recordings, and more. If it was related to ventriloquism, Berger collected it, beginning with a Tommy Baloney figure, his first collection item purchased in 1910 after seeing a ventriloquism performance in New York City during a business trip. By 1947, Berger’s pastime had taken over the garage at his Fort Mitchell home. Fifteen years later, in 1962, he built a second building for the ever-expanding collection. In 1973, Berger’s vast collection opened officially to the public. Today, having nearly doubled in size, Ven Haven Museum houses more than 900 dummies used by ventriloquists from the nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first centuries. The oldest dummies in the collection date to the 1860s. Vent Haven Museum: 33 W. Maple Ave., Ft. Mitchell, KY. Guided tours are available by appointment between May 1 through September 30. Suggested donations for the tour are $10 per person.

The tomb is one of the many religious features of the Garden of Hope, hidden away high atop a hill in Covington’s west end. The Garden of Hope has been the crown jewel on this two-acre patch of land for more than sixty years. The brainchild of Rev. Morris H. Coers of Covington’s Immanuel Baptist Church (now shuttered), it opened on Palm Sunday in 1958, twenty years after the Holy Land visit that inspired its creation. Regular church services take place in the Carpenter’s Shop at 10:30 am on Sundays. Visitors may attend services or wander the grounds on their own any time, but to hear the stories of the miracles relating to the building or the garden or to get inside the tomb and other structures, you need to schedule a tour. Garden of Hope: 699 Edgecliff St., Covington Some of the secrets in Secret Cincinnati will delight you and some will spook you—all of them will intrigue you. If you’d like to order one or multiple copies of the book, contact Kathy at KathyWitt24@gmail.com or (859) 638-4895. She includes a special bookmark that lists all of the secrets so readers can check them off as they visit each one.

GARDEN OF HOPE, COVINGTON Carved into the rock on a bluff overlooking a breathtaking sweep of Cincinnati is the tomb of Christ, an exact replica of the Garden Tomb of Jesus in Jerusalem.
