MEET THE CONTRIBUTORS Brian Miller is a native of Villa Hills, located in Kenton County, Kentucky. He joined the Building Industry Association of Northern Kentucky in 2009 where he leads one of the country’s top twenty largest builders associations. Prior to returning to Northern Kentucky, he spent eleven years as Vice President of Communications with the Home Builders Association of Louisville. Mr. Miller serves on several committees and boards with the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) including NAHB’s Environmental Issues Committee as Executive Officer Council Liaison, Budget Committee, Land Development Committee, Executive Officers Council Board of Directors, Chairman of the Executive Officers Council Professional Development Committee, and has served as Chairman for NAHB’s Large Local Association Forum and Public Relations Forum. Locally he serves on the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce Business Advocacy Council, the Chamber’s Energy, Environment and Infrastructure Committee and Northern Kentucky Consensus Committee. Vicki Prichard has been writing about northern Kentucky for more than 20 years. She began her career with Kentucky Educational Television as an associate producer, traveling throughout the Commonwealth mining Kentucky’s deep seam of stories. She worked on the KET 13-part series NKY, and years later worked was a scriptwriter for the three-hour, Emmywinning documentary, Where the River Bends: A History of Northern Kentucky. Her work has appeared in Beech House Press publications, The Kentucky Post, and The Sunday Challenger, and travel industry publications. She earned a BA in journalism from the University of Kentucky, and a BA in English from Northern Kentucky University. Jill Morenz is the Director of Communications and Community Initiatives for the Catalytic Fund. Her favorite projects each year are the Beyond the Curb Urban Living Tours, which showcase the huge range of housing options in Northern Kentucky’s river cities. Lights, Camera… and Lots of Action in Northern Kentucky! You might say that the Northern Kentucky/Greater Cincinnati region has become a red carpet region. Since 1987, Film Cincinnati, the region’s nonprofit organization dedicated to attracting, promoting, and cultivating film, television, and commercial production in the region, has brought hundreds of films to the area, plus thousands of television productions, documentaries, industrials, commercials, and music videos, and the momentum just keeps getting stronger.
Odds are you’ve had glimpses of the region on the big screen and you probably didn’t even know it. The mixed-use buildings in city environments that combine a street-level business with upstairs living space allow entrepreneurs to cut out their commute entirely. In fact, many millennials don’t rely on a car at all, especially since they are often able to work from home. Developers are courting the millennials with several new apartment complexes in Covington and Newport, which will offer higherend finishes and inviting communal spaces. As one developer puts it, “the urban setting is the biggest amenity.”
Families are finding wonderful, historic single family homes in the urban core, with charming details and plenty of room. Parents love being so close to libraries, parks and schools and the children enjoy the everchanging environment right outside their front doors. Empty nesters are choosing urban neighborhoods when it’s time to downsize. They especially appreciate devoting their weekends to fun activities, instead of cleaning a big house and mowing a large lawn. Empty nesters enjoy properties that offer some luxury amenities, like rooftop gardens, granite countertops, large closets and off-street parking. There are stunning condo developments that offer these, in addition to the historic
neighborhoods that boast charming and beautifullymaintained homes. Although the river cities all have many things in common, such as walkability, interesting restaurants and stores and wonderful housing options, each community has its own flavor and style. Ludlow is the peaceful urban city located the farthest west along the Ohio River. Initially proposed as a “garden town” in 1827, the city was officially incorporated in1864 and now has a population of around 4,400. Its oldest neighborhoods border the tree-lined riverfront and include beautiful and unusual historic villas, double and triple houses and stately townhomes. Charming

bungalows and cottages were built in the early and mid 1900’s and in 2003 the Riversbreeze community was developed, offering panoramic river and city views and complimenting Ludlow’s diverse and affordable housing stock. The river town offers a lively commercial corridor on Elm Street underscored by a burgeoning multimedia arts community anchored by several venues: the Folk School Coffee Shop, which is a gathering place for writers and musicians and Circus Mojo, which offers training programs for performance artists, as well as art galleries, a recording studio and a fencing school. Boutiques, coffee shops, a brewery, a distillery and the Ludlow Bromley Yacht Club add to the city’s lively vibe. A new commercial and residential
development will be completed in 2018, along with a new gathering space with an elevated train viewing platform. Covington is Northern Kentucky’s largest city, with a population of around 40,000. The city celebrated its bicentennial in 2014 and is home to murals throughout the town, encouraging residents and visitors to “love the Cov”. Covington has 19 distinct neighborhoods, each with its own attractions and personality. One of these is MainStrasse Village, a bustling area with moderately-priced homes and apartments, several excellent restaurants and unusual stores. The square has two iconic structures: the Goose Girl Fountain and the Carroll Chimes Bell Tower. It

is also known for the “Goebel Goats”, who live in adjacent Goebel Park and help control the growth of invasive plants. The historic neighborhoods of Licking Riverside, Roebling Point and Old Seminary Square have beautiful, shaded streets of homes built over a center ago. The Central Business District is humming with activity and includes the stunning Hotel Covington, Braxton Brewery, a number of great restaurants and bars and a new luxury apartment development. This neighborhood is home the the NKY Innovation District, a hub for entrepreneurs. Covington’s riverfront is anchored by the iconic Roebling Suspension Bridge, historic homes, riverfront hotels and office buildings. In addition to the murals and
statues that already line the waterfront, the city is making a significant investment in its riverfront and will soon have a high-quality park and festival space for visitors to enjoy. Once known as America’s original Sin City in the mid20th century, Newport has since transformed its historic mansions and business districts into thriving urban neighborhoods. It is now a charming town with several well-managed historic districts filled with beautiful homes. In fact, Newport’s housing market is red hot right now. is located adjacent to the Purple People Bridge, a pedestrian bridge across the Ohio River to Cincinnati, and includes fun destinations like the Aquarium, AMC Movie Theaters, a comedy club, bowling alley and many restaurants and stores. A new segment of the ongoing Riverfront Commons trail project to connect the river cities runs on top of the flood wall from Bellevue to Covington, connecting with the Purple People Bridge and other regional ammenities. There are plaques along the trail which detail local history, along with stunning views. On the south east side of the city, the Newport Pavillion has grown to include a Kroger Marketplace, Target and many other national brands and restaurants.
Bellevue is a charming urban city nestled between Dayton and Newport that has passed the test of time. The city incorporated in 1870 and currently is home to nearly 6,000 people, who live in houses ranging from historic 1800’s buildings to contemporary condominiums and townhouses. Bellevue is known for its lively and quaint downtown which offers eclectic shopping, dining, galleries, professional offices, and a brewery. Two multigenerational businesses, Cleves and Lonnemann Jewelry and Schneider’s Sweet Shop, provide deep roots as a foundation to the downtown. The picturesque riverfront park buzzes with year-round activity, including festivals, concerts, fitness classes, families playing and visitors
simply enjoying the breathtaking river view. With the amenities within and all around it, Bellevue’s sense of community, friendliness, walkability and beauty have frequently prompted comparisons to the idyllic fictional town of Mayberry. Bellevue lives up to its motto, “Preserving the Past, Preparing for the future,” by leveraging the value of historic preservation while continuing to innovate and adapt to change, ensuring a healthy and dynamic future. Dayton is nestled in the bend of the Ohio River, giving it generous stretches of waterfront. There are two trails along the river connected to the Riverfront Commons trail, one on top of the flood wall and one much closer to the water. Dayton’s
marina is a fun place to go for live music, good food and river views. Dayton offers a wide variety of housing options, from quaint cottages, large historic homes, luxury condos and beautiful new homes built on the river. The city’s dedication to small businesses has resulted in a number of new high-quality restaurants and shops to open in the downtown business district, adding great amenities for residents. The distinguished schools in Dayton are another reason the population of this small community is growing rapidly. CITIES & NEIGHBORHOODS Alexandria Only 30 minutes from downtown Cincinnati, Alexandria and the Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky International Airport, Alexandria offers public and private schools, is minutes from Northern Kentucky University and an easy commute to the University of Cincinnati, Xavier University, and Thomas More College. Cold Spring Located in northern Campbell County, Cold Spring is only minutes from Northern Kentucky University, and is home to the national headquarters of the veteran service organization, Disabled American Veterans. CITIES & NEIGHBORHOODS Bromley The settlement of Bromley can be traced to the year 1784, when Prettyman Perry received a land grant from the United States Government of 2,000 acres. Soon thereafter, the Perry family began constructing a home on the property. This home, called the Landmark, still stands today on Shelby Street. Bromley continues to be a small, tight-knit residential communi-ty. The churches and the volunteer fire department continue to draw the residents together and provide a strong sense of belonging and community pride. Covington There’s a reason northern Kentuckians #LovetheCov. Covington, Kenton’s vibrant river city, located at the confluence of the Ohio and Licking Rivers, across from Cincinnati, was founded in 1815 at the confluence of the Licking and Ohio Rivers Covington is located directly across the Ohio River from Cincinnati, but this river city is a destination unto itself for both busi-nesses and residents. Elsmere What began as a small railroad community suddenly matured into a major suburb along the Old Lexington Pike. Erlanger The City of Erlanger, Kentucky is located in the heart of the tri-state area which includes Kentucky, Ohio, and Indiana. This Northern Kentucky
city is in the east-central region of the U.S. and is the third largest city in Kenton County and has much to offer both residents and businesses. Fairview - located in southern Kenton County, primarily along state route 177. The city was incorporated in 1957 to avoid annexation by Covington. Our city’s history is tied to the adjacent railroad, and the name “Fairview” was suggested by one of our residents. The city of Fairview is zoned agricultural and has a population of under 200. Fort Mitchell neighborhoods offer charm, as well as stunning parks, and an ex-cellent recreation program. CITIES & NEIGHBORHOODS Corinth The smallest of Grant County’s four incorporated ares, this charming rural enclave is a sweet slice of Americana with its county store and small businesses. In 1930, the Corinth basketball team not only won the Kentucky State Championship, but went to the national tournament in Chicago where its “fabulous five” starters took third place in the nation. Crittenden There’s a good chance that you’ve heard about the tiny little town of Crittendon because of one of its more famous — and favorite — residents. In 2001, Crittendon’s Rodger Bingham, a retired school teacher and farmer, became a beloved national figure when he appeared on television’s Survivor: The Australian Outback. Bingham was a solid representative of this small town that provides quiet living with easy proximity to metropolitan venues. Dry Ridge A friendly little city, Dry Ridge is home to the last stagecoach stops left standing in Kentucky, Sherman Tavern. The city is home to the I-75 Outlet Center, and antique mall, the historical Hogan House Inn, and charming local businesses. Williamstown Home to the worldwide attraction, the Ark Encounter, Williamstown is quickly growing from a bedroom community to a destination for families and a vacation hub. The full-size Noah’s Ark, spanning 510 feet long, 85 feet wide, and 51 feet high, is an engineering marvel. Visitors to the park explore Biblical history, fossil hunts, and zip lines. The park has spurred hotels and restaurants to spring up, but Williamstown is holding on to its small town charm. But Warsaw’s real appeal lies in its quiet, charming community — a Tom Sawyer-esque locale. Sparta The tiny town of Sparta began as a village named Brock’s Station back in 1802, and in the mid1800’s it became a stop on the Louisville and Nashville Railroad. Today the CSX trains still run through the town, and so do some of racing world’s fastest drivers at Kentucky Speedway. This 1.5-mile tri-oval speedway put this little town on the map, hosting ARCA, NASCAR, and Indy Racing League racing annually since it opened in 2000. Glencoe This sweet, little Kentucky town had a population of 360 according to the 2010 U.S. Census, but you can find some hometown goodness in local venues like the Exit 62 Truck Stop for family-style dining.
