HBA: The Source for Your Business to Business Relationships They call it networking. A room full of HBA builders, remodelers and developers meeting one another and associates who have products and services to offer them. Is that all there is? Just being sold? If that is what you are asking yourself you need to think about what we do a little differently. Woody Allen once said that “90% of success is just showing up”. Sorry Woody that doesn’t cut it in today’s business world. So what is the real meaning of networking? Connections + Relationships = Value (CRV). This CRV you make at the HBA help to increase sales, reduce costs and create your competitive advantage. CRV is not just sales opportunities. Some are, but you never know when the next product or relationship will offer you a better price, better service and a happier customer. You can also learn CRV to increase your sales through pier dialogue. What sales practices did your contact use to build value in the eye of their prospective customer? When is the last time you asked your competitor about the way they are increasing business, market share and top line revenue? Would they tell you? Try it at our next event and see what happens to your CRV. It never hurts to ask. Ask your fellow business owner or manager at HBA events how they solved a problem you encounter in your business world. You will be surprised about what you may learn but you must bring something to offer their CRV improvement. Cost cutting, efficiencies through better practices and technology, estimating and so on are issues that your fellow HBA members deal with daily. Come to our next event, stick out that hand and create that relationship that may mean the difference between doing things the way you have always done things or lowering your costs through idea sharing. You may not think it is easy to meet new business contacts and sometimes awkward but what is the cost of doing nothing and staying where you are while others are learning and benefitting from the knowledge you are missing out on. In case you are new to the CRV game here are a few tips that may help you as you enter the world of an improved bottom line through the HBA: 1. Take time to clean up when you go to the jobsite 2. Put your fear of rejection aside – People are excited to engage you! 3. Body language is critical – Start off in an affirmative and positive manner! 4. Practice your short version outside the event – Meeting people in passing and leaving a lasting memory is important! 5. Use the HBA to predetermine the people you want to talk to – Call us and ask who is registered for our events. 6. Remember you have two ears and one mouth – use them in that proportion. 7. Use your new connections own words when responding to something said. 8. Curb your enthusiasm – Focus on THEM and not YOU! 9. Wear your name tag on the “right” side. It’s the side you shake hands with. 10. Develop a technique to break away from a conversation in order to make best use of your time. 11. Always sit with someone you don’t know. 12. Humor is always appropriate. 13. Follow up!!! The HBA has a series of events that are designed to connect you with your piers and new clients. Be sure to check out our website, e-newsletter or the calendar section of the Northern Kentucky Builder magazine to keep up to date with all of the opportunities available to you to build your business. If you have questions about how to build your CRV through the HBA or have a comment, feel free to call us at 859-331-9500 or email us at info@hbanky.com. Sincerely,

Brian A. Miller Executive Vice President Home Builders Association of Northern Kentucky

he 2013 HBA Annual Golf Outing celebrated 50 years of home builder members coming together to enjoy a day of golf with friends and business associates. Each year our sponsors prove to make this golf outing a huge success and this year was no exception. A “Big Thank You” to our Title Sponsor, L&N Federal Credit Union and the numerous corporate sponsors, door prize sponsors, tee and green sponsors. Thank you to the 2013 Golf Committee who did a great job planning and working this outing. Two new games and a raffle were added this year which added a lot of excitement to the outing. The Long John Contest raised some eyebrows when golfers came up to the 18th tee, the Greenie Game was also a big hit with 16 winners collecting $15 each and everyone seemed to enjoy the Reds Basket Raffle. Our contest sponsors created some unique prizes such as a new commode (Ferguson Kitchen, Bath & Lighting Gallery) for the Long John Contest and a few seconds in a Money Machine (American Mortgage Services) for Closest to the Pin! It will be quite interesting to see what will develop for 2014!

THE BENEFITS OF PERMEABLE PAVERS

W

hen considering building a patio, deck, walkway or driveway, permeable pavers can provide several advantages over asphalt or concrete. While historically, asphalt and concrete have been the most common outdoor surfaces, they provide few benefits. A better choice would be a pervious material — permeable pavers allow water to drain through the material itself, or through the joints of the construction. Advantages Surface Water Management: During a heavy rainfall sewer systems can get overwhelmed, while the ground gets very little benefit of the natural irrigation. By using permeable materials, the ground can capture water runoff, absorb it and clean it during the process. Reduction of Overall Irrigation Demand: By allowing the water to collect and seep into the ground, the direct and surrounding areas will require much less man-made irrigation. Surface Temperature Reduction: As water absorbs into the ground, the surface and surrounding area temperatures will be cooled. Permeable pavers in colors that meet the Solar Reflectivity Index (SRI) help to reflect the sun, further reducing the local ambient temperature, improving the health of local vegetation and improving air quality. Design Flexibility: Permeable pavers are available in a variety of shapes and colors, offering unlimited design options and providing beautiful visual appeal.

With a vast array of colors, sizes and patterns, Reading Rock’s StormLock Permeable Pavers offer a variety of design options and endless possibilities. From the classic herringbone to the contemporary geometric to rugged and rustic, we provide options to meet any design requirement. Reading Rock now offers fill chips (#9 stones) to fill the joints of the pavers, allowing the water to permeate through to the ground. We offer these in super sacks at affordable prices. PaverLock StormLock Permeable Paver Lifetime Warranty Durability - Exceeds 8000 PSI Quality Assurance High Surface Infiltration Rates May be Mechanically Installed Inhibits Vegetation Growth Withstand Extreme Weather Conditions Design Flexibility Color Variety Solar Reflectivity Index Colors (SRI) ColorLock Technology Feeds Rain Gardens & Bio-Swales Americans with Disabilities Act Compliant Meets EPA Phase II Rule 30 Year Life Cycle & Ease of Maintenance Call Reading Rock at 800.482.6466 or visit www.readingrock.com for more information.

Reading Rock’s PaverLock StormLock Permeable Pavers are an eco-friendly and environmentally smart product line with life cycles of 30+ years. Our permeable pavers have been designed to reduce stormwater runoff, providing detention volume that can be fed into rain gardens and bioswales. StormLock Permeable Pavers can be mechanically installed, providing lower labor rates. Northern Kentucky BUILDER

2013 Calvacade of Homes

T

he Home Builders Association of Northern Kentucky wrapped up the 2013 Cavalcade of Homes show on May 19th. What a remarkable display of homes! Our professional certified participating builders were: Adam Miller Homes, Arlinghaus Builders, Ashley Construction, The BOLD Company, Tim Burks Builders, Cutter Custom Homes, Drees Homes and M/I Homes. These loyal members produced 14 outstanding homes scattered throughout Boone, Campbell and Kenton County. Without the support of our Gold Sponsors it would not be possible to purchase the advertising and promote the show in the manner needed. Our sincerest gratitude goes out to Adam Miller Homes and Tim Burks Builders. We also appreciate the support from our home sponsors: Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery, Patrick’s Custom Hardwood, Kelly Brothers Home & Design Center, Arronco Airtron Heating & Air Conditioning, Kentucky Federal Savings & Loan, as well as those who advertised in our show guide. Your HBA worked hard to purchase and negotiate media packages which allowed us to broaden our coverage and gain maximum exposure. Much of the advertising was aimed to drive consumers to our website. 18

Northern Kentucky BUILDER

An addition to this year’s show was an iPhone app. This allowed show goers to download information on the homes and builders. It also offered an interactive map to take you from home to home. Our show guides were produced by Cincy Magazine and were made available at all local Kroger stores. During our wrap up meeting the committee commented on the amount of people this show attracted. The amount of attendees was a welcomed site. The home on Turkeyfoot Road built by Tim Burks was no doubt an attraction. If you did not have the opportunity to view this massive structure – you missed something spectacular! Tim Burks home hosted tours for over 20,000 attendees. The other 13 homes reported steady traffic all weekends during the show dates. This is exciting considering one of the weekends was Derby Day and another Mother’s Day. It is an exciting time to be in the building industry. There is forward movement and growth is all around us.

Land Development Council and Ohio Valley Development Council Joint Premier Event Draws Nearly 100

Y

our HBA’s Land Development Council (LDC) and the Greater Cincinnati HBA’s Ohio Valley Development Council (OVDC) recently held an outstanding event at the Hofbrauhaus Newport. The featured speakers were Michael Mittelholzer and Ty Asfaw from NAHB’s regulatory affairs department. The issues presented at the meeting were challenges our industry faces locally with storm water regulations and endangered species regulations. “The Joint event with the LDC/OVDC was a great opportunity to understand how the Federal Government is adversely affecting our industry with new environmental rules and regulations,” said Paul Metzger, LDC President of Fischer Homes and Fischer Development. “Our national association is working to assist us to understand and steer us through these rules and regulations that are often set by the agencies without congressional approval or oversight. The speakers showed a vast knowledge of the issues and explained to us how they are working to limit these regulations and effect positive change through their relationships with the agency rule makers,” he concluded. There was a lively question and answer period following the presentations where the speakers were able to address everyone’s concerns and questions about these regulations. Both of these environmental regulations are increasing for the foreseeable future and the HBA is providing unique opportunities to learn about the challenges of these regulations as they exist today and as they progress into the future. As a national average, Twenty five percent of the cost of a home is due to regulations. Two thirds of that twenty five percent are due to land use regulations. These issues are extremely important to our industry as they affect housing affordability and housing supply. This affects everything from mortgages, to insurance, to windows/doors/lumber and any other product or service that goes into a home. “It is critical that we get our developers, engineers, contractors, suppliers and lenders engaged in the issues that affect our industry. Whether it by environmental issues, subdivision regulations, zoning regulations, discussions about public utilities or the many other issues we face on a daily basis we need the support of the entire development community. The active participation in the Development Councils is a great opportunity to work together to present a unified and organized message that is delivered with strength in numbers. If a business is in this industry and not actively involved in the Development Councils, they are doing both themselves and our industry a disservice,” explained Metzger. Interested in attending an upcoming LDC meeting? Here’s your chance. What’s New with Pella

Pella Impervia Dual-Color Option NOW AVAILABLE! Neither wind nor rain nor sleet or snow stops determined mail carriers. Nor do those elements and other climate extremes phase Pella Corporation’s energy-efficient Pella Impervia line, expanding in the Summer of 2011 to include White interior option for all units. Pella Impervia windows and patio doors offer more style and design flexibility for your customers. With the new dual-color option, Pella Impervia products can have a White interior with the choice of White, Tan or Brown exterior. Pella Impervia windows and patio doors arrive pre-finished with a powder-coat paint finish on both interior and exterior. This durable finish stays looking great for years with little care.

“We’re pleased to offer more innovative solutions to builders and homeowners living in areas where a stronger, more durable window is a must,” said Duane Putz, director of sales and marketing for Pella Impervia. “This product is made for hot, cold, wet or windy climates and now it’s available in more styles.” Pella Impervia can withstand the forces of Mother Nature without cracking, shrinking or warping in extreme weather conditions. The sleek-profiled innovative products made from Duracast®, the strongest most durable material in windows and doors, are virtually maintenancefree and well-suited to today’s busy lifestyles and balanced budgets for home and business owners.* Builders, remodelers and homeowners may choose from convenient factory prefinished brown, white or tan color options and now have a White interior!
