BE PREPARED! OSHA SILICA RULE TOOK EFFECT SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 23

T

he crystalline silica rule issued in March 2016 is the most far-reaching regulatory initiative ever finalized for construction with an industryestimated cost of $5 billion per year — roughly $4 billion per year more than OSHA estimates. Your association and the Construction Industry Safety Coalition have requested that OSHA withdraw the rule and talk frankly with the construction industry about a more feasible and economical approach to dealing with the silica hazards. NAHB’s legal challenge on the silica rule is still pending. The case is scheduled to be argued before the court on Sept. 26. The Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has announced that it will consider good-faith efforts by employers to comply with the new silica rule for the first 30 days following the start of enforcement on Saturday, Sept. 23. OSHA said it will offer outreach and assistance to help ensure that covered employers are fully and properly complying with the new requirements. Employers may be cited if it appears, upon inspection, that an employer is not making any efforts to meet the new rule. 19 State Plans have completed adoption of the silica standard and 9 have 12

not completed adoption (see attached). If you are in a State Plan state, check with your administrator to see if they will be following the temporary enforcement policy in construction. Resources and background information for complying with the new rule can be found on NAHB's website at nahb.org/silica.

NEW MEMBER ORIENTATION

The New Member Orientation is not only for the new members who are recruited throughout the year, but also for members who would like a refresher! You would be amazed at the services and benefits the BIA provides their members. If you are interested in attending the next New Member Orientation event, please contact Tammy at 859-331-9500 or tgorby@buildersnky.com to make your reservation.

Subscription-based connections with readers means brand loyalty and repeat messaging capabilities. Your printed content can be repurposed in digital channels to reach a broader audience through the BIA’s partnership with Scripps! Magazines are typically kept around for quite a while. One single magazine left in a business office can generate repeat exposure for a business. Also, an ad placed today will reach people months from now, which can’t be said for all media channels. Magazines allow for highly targeted advertising so your budget is used to only reach the people who are interested in your business. Can you say better ROI? Contact Charley today to have your business join Builder so you can take full advantage of targeting your customers! 859.331.9500 | charley@buildersnky.com
