HBA Streamlined Governance that is Easy to Use, Welcoming and Responsive Have you ever had that experience in your life where you say, “Why did I even bother”? I recently had one of these experiences at an unnamed clothing store. I was out of town on HBA business and had to meet fellow Executive Officers on a boat that left at 6:00pm. It was going to get cold and I had not packed a jacket so it was time to buy one. The captain was a member of another HBA I knew well and also knew that 6:00pm meant 6:00pm and not 6:01pm or I would be lonely on a dock at 6:02. I found a jacket that I would buy and then made the mistake of trying to checkout. I had a gift card and a debit card. The sales clerk scanned the tag and scanned my gift card. When I swiped my debit card the sales system went down... havoc ensued. The unapologetic clerk had no idea what to do and tried to get the system back up but could not...for 15 minutes. Then she attempted to check the sales log to make sure it had not hit my debit card. She said it had not but we will see when the bill comes. The transaction did, however, erase the balance on my gift card which was substantial. I was asked if I really wanted to buy the jacket and wait for a new gift card to be reissued in the mail. I began picturing my options; freezing on a boat or warm and snug on a deserted dock. After running through those two scenarios mentally I informed the clerk that I had to be at a boat dock at 5:45. I told her a :15 lie because I was loosing faith in my ability to purchase clothes from a store specifically in business to fulfill just that purpose. She stared vacuously at me and said nothing. I could see that she was about to cry due to the fact that the tools she had were failing, her training didn’t help her overcome unforeseen challenges, and was not educated about or ignored most aspects of customer service. So there she was; treading water…waiting to be saved or drown. Finally the manager had a workaround. We went to another terminal. He created a new gift card with the old balance and drafted a new sale after wiping the old sale out of the system. I could see the look on his face that said, “this is going to be a lot of work…why can’t she handle this?”The sales clerk was at that time on her phone texting someone now that her rescue had arrived. He shoved the new card in her hand and told her to ring up a new sale and that he would have to clean up the mess later. After saving the day there was no follow up. No..”hey watch how I am doing this”. No…”I am sorry for your inconvenience”. No…”where are you going”. Nothing. I caused a mess for the manager, a tailspin for the clerk and an unforgettable moment for me because I was trying to buy clothes….in a store….that is in the business to do just that. The picture I just painted for you took 45 minutes…not streamlined…not easy to use…not welcoming…not responsive. Sure the store has training manuals and programs and I have experienced outstanding service and a great streamlined checkout experience in the past. So I will probably go back. What if that was my first visit? We at the HBA run on the governance of the members. Just like the store is in business to sell clothes we are here to serve you, to advocate for you, to educate you and to help your business grow. Since we are volunteer driven we need committees, councils, and task forces to get things done. We understand that not all of you are able to commit to a standing meeting so we have meetings that meet quarterly, bimonthly, and even our Board of Directors meets eight times a year. Over the last few years we have focused on streamlining governance of the HBA to make it more convenient for you. We have also created more opportunities to “micro-burst” volunteer; a term that means options to do one thing and then move on. Our membership drives, business to business events, consumer shows, sponsorships, legislative trips to Frankfort, etcetera, allow you to tune in, turn on and then tune out. Since that restructure has taken place, the staff has taken on a greater role in order to make the details come together while empowering members to help mold the vision and future of the HBA. We are very proud of their accomplishments and those of our leadership. We also want to make sure we are easy to use. Our email is always open. So is our phone. We recently launched a mobile app that has all of our members in a directory that is searchable and works with your phone to call one another. It features our events and allows you to sign up on your mobile device. Coupled with our website we hope that access to information is easy to use. And last we strive to be very responsive. Anytime we hear a concern, compliment or the next idea from our members they go straight to the top. We encourage our staff to bring your ideas, issues and “at-a-boys” directly to me. We share those with our leadership team and then we share the resolution or the simple thanks back to you. If you ever encounter a story like the one I shared going on at our HBA please let me know. Hopefully there aren’t those going on. Also, please call on us to share ideas about how we can make your experience easier to use, more streamlined and/or responsive. We are here for you. Sincerely,

Brian A. Miller Executive Vice President Home Builders Association of Northern Kentucky

The court upheld the agreement, finding the employee’s suit to be provided by statute for employees to file state law claims against the employer. A recent time-barred. Insulating Your Business for Success in Today’s Marketplace The Convergence of the Four C’s: Comfort, Cost Efficiency, Code Standards and Consciousness By Ryan Jansen, RDJI, LLC.

Advertorial The collective U.S. housing industry is still feeling the aftershocks from the devastating impact of the housing crash in 2008 and resulting recession. With the worst downturn since the 1930s now firmly behind us, the current residential construction boom is ushering in a new set of marketplace dynamics and challenges– as well as rich opportunities. There is a convergence of factors driving today’s housing industry that can be leveraged to help distinguish your work as a builder from the competition and ultimately resonate with future home buyers. The growing marketplace concentration on comfort, cost efficiency, code standards and (environmental) consciousness is creating renewed interest in building energy efficient, high-performance homes.

With the growing focus on the Four C’s, future home buyers and existing homeowners are beginning to pay more attention to insulation, air sealing and moisture management solutions. As a result, it is equally important that builders remain competitive in this space by staying current on the latest advancements, research and product innovations. Fortunately, you don’t have to do it alone.

Likely attributed in part to the rising energy costs, home buyers are now primed and ready to learn how they can increase the performance, comfort, energy efficiency of their home. These home buyers are also increasingly expressing an interest in exceeding – rather than simply meeting – energy efficient building codes.

Understandably, projected increases in housing starts and the new home construction boom makes it difficult to focus on anything but getting through the day and delivering the jobs on time. To help maximize your job site efficiency and bring the strongest solutions to your customers , local Certified Energy Expert® Professionals (CEEs), supported by Owens Corning, can be a valuable tool in your arsenal. These trained energy specialists can help your business stay at the forefront of the latest building science solutions in insulation, air sealing and moisture management.

This creates a unique opportunity for builders to engage these savvy home buyers in a more sophisticated dialogue that will elevate their understanding of the important role the building envelope plays in achieving a high-performance home that will deliver against each of the Four Cs. While it is unlikely we’ll hear a home buyer say, “I want to live in an uncomfortable home with drafts and unpredictable temperature control” or “I like wasting energy and having 30 percent higher energy costs on my heating and cooling,” homeowners have historically looked past the “guts” of the home to spend a majority of their time on aesthetic decisions during the building process.

CEE professionals also bring a sophisticated level of expertise addressing the complexity behind air movement and the interaction of moisture, heat and cold within a home’s walls, roof and interior space. Since we live in the “guts” of the home, we also are skilled in all types of installation techniques for maximizing energy efficiency and acoustics. From the latest local building codes and standards, quality assurance and Energy Star/DOE® programs, CEE Professionals can be a resource to your team to help you differentiate yourself in the market.

To connect with a local CEE in your region, please contact Ryan Jansen at 859.727.0500 Ryan Jansen is an Owens Corning™ Certified Energy Expert® professional based out of Erlanger, KY. Certified Energy Expert® professionals can be found in 27 states and across 60 markets. Construction-to-perm loans with 3.5% down? While you may not think of FHA when you think of new construction home loans, there actually is a program available and Huntington Bank is offering it! It’s a construction-toperm, one-time closing. It offers a down payment as low as 3.5%, and FHA’s more relaxed credit qualifications to assist home buyers who may not fit more strict lending guidelines. Additionally, this program can be used for traditional site-built, as well as manufactured or modular homes, including their lot purchases, all under one loan. The same county maximum lending limits apply to FHA’s construction program, as it does to its traditional home loans. For additional information, please contact:

Entrepreneurship Bootcamp What is “Entrepreneurship Bootcamp”? Northern Kentucky HBA has a long standing commitment to its member companies, be they the smallest one man operation or the largest multi-state corporations. In an effort to help all of our members, we have developed a one year program that has a focus on helping every company navigate the economic recovery that is moving full steam ahead. For almost a decade, area businesses have been struggling to make it every day and learning to survive. Hundreds of companies folded and others had to shrink down and weather the storm. While those strategies were necessary at the time, all of the good that they did in help companies through hard times can be quickly undone if companies fail to restart and jump back into the marketplace. Being, “Stuck on Survive”, can destroy a company when others are embracing the new economy and moving ahead.

To combat this, we have created an education track taught by movers and shakers in their fields, here to not only help you our members, but to foster the continued growth of the Northern Kentucky/Greater Cincinnati Area. Please, join us for these classes. You may not need them all for your yearly requirement at HBA but use them to help your business be better than it was yesterday and to prepare for tomorrow. We sincerely hope that our education program can help you and yours to enjoy the business that you have spent so much time creating. October Brought Great 2013 Tour of Remodeled Homes

T

he 2013 Tour of Remodeled Homes was held as it has been traditionally on the first weekend of October. All of the entries were located in Northern Kentucky. With six remodeling projects clustered in Ft. Thomas and Edgewood it was easy to view all entries in one weekend. The HBA Registered Remodelers who presented outstanding displays were Corbin Custom Remodelers, Bill’s Remodeling & Electric Inc., Stegman Construction Inc., T&J Home Specialist Inc., and Cutter Construction. During the wrap up meeting the committee had positive comments about the show. All agreed that the low numbers were a surprise but also noted that this was most likely “an off year”.

18

Northern Kentucky BUILDER

11/2013

It seems that most Remodelers are staying busy but the overall consensus was that either the timing did not allow completion in time for the show or that some of the projects did not seem fitting. The committee agreed that it is essential to continue producing the Tour of Remodeled Homes since that is where they acquire leads that turn into jobs. HBA is humbled by the support of those who continue to sponsor our shows. Without them, this show would not be possible. Our sincere gratitude goes out to our Presenting Sponsors Kelly Bros Home & Design Center and Pella Windows & Doors. This year’s ticket back Sponsor was Florida Tile. The Project

Sponsors were Sims-Lohman, America’s Floor Source, Florida Tile, Studer Residential Design, Wiseway, and American Mortgage. Remodelers please keep the 2014 TORH’s at the front of your business every day! The projects that you are bidding on are ALL entries for next year’s show. It is important that each time you go to that first visit with a potential customer you keep in mind that the project you are bidding will eventually turn into more jobs for you. There is no better way to get in front of a captive audience than to bring consumers to your projects. The Tour of Remodeled Homes is an ideal way to showcase the professional product that you produce.

What’s New with Pella

Pella Impervia Dual-Color Option NOW AVAILABLE! Neither wind nor rain nor sleet or snow stops determined mail carriers.
