Let’s Get Specific…About the HBA One of the trends we see in business organizations across the country is their race to become very specific about what they do; what products and services they offer and the advocacy they enjoy. The HBA, unlike many business organizations, has always been somewhat trade specific. We are about the construction industry and the community of homeowners. At the same time we understand you need information that is specific as well. The world is full of information flying around at the speed of light in print, on the airwaves or across the internet. Sometimes it is a real challenge for you to find an information source that has the take on things that benefits you in the construction industry. When you do find that source it has value for you. You go back to it again and again to gain the knowledge you feel you need to improve your business. The leadership of the HBA is nearly finished with their three year plan. Major portions of that plan are focused on communication and education. The plan is lengthy but it is concerned, in part, with getting you what you need to know the way you want to get it. One of the best sources is through the magazine you hold in your hands, the Northern Kentucky Builder. The HBA will be investing in improvements in the publication so that you are informed about what is going on at your association, learn how policy is being shaped at the HBA from the members involved in doing so, and learning about new and ongoing programs and services to help your company. Another source of very specific information is our professional development courses offered in the fall, winter and early spring at the HBA Building Center. We have revamped much of our courses to offer you several choices of education that help you improve your business. A major portion of our education beginning this fall is our “Entrepreneurship Boot Camp” series. We realize in these times of recovery that many members have been in survival mode the last few years. We also know that many new companies are entering our industry to take advantage of the recovery. Every one of these businesses has different needs. If your business is new and lacks some of the business basics in order to thrive in today’s industry or are a seasoned professional that needs to learn new business practices to keep up with today’s technologically heavy world we have developed courses for you. We offer courses from Accounting, Salesmanship, Estimation, Technology, Advertising Evaluation and Purchasing, and a course deigned to set your company apart from your competition. This is by far the most important series created by your HBA for you in the history of our professional development courses added to an already beneficial course schedule. You can see the schedule online at www.homebuildersnky.com or on our new mobile website. To access the mobile member site scan the QR code below. Please save it to the home page of your mobile device so you will have HBA information with you at all times. Here you will be able to schedule your calendar for HBA events, look up your fellow members and see the HBA home shows on your mobile device. We hope you take advantage of the specific information your HBA provides for you. If there is anything you want to know, a course you think we should offer, or a subject worth reading please contact us at 859-331-9500 or by email at info@hbanky.com. Thank you. Sincerely,

Brian A. Miller Executive Vice President Home Builders Association of Northern Kentucky

Insulating Your Business for Success in Today’s Marketplace The Convergence of the Four C’s: Comfort, Cost Efficiency, Code Standards and Consciousness By Ryan Jansen, RDJI, LLC.

Advertorial The collective U.S. housing industry is still feeling the aftershocks from the devastating impact of the housing crash in 2008 and resulting recession. With the worst downturn since the 1930s now firmly behind us, the current residential construction boom is ushering in a new set of marketplace dynamics and challenges– as well as rich opportunities. There is a convergence of factors driving today’s housing industry that can be leveraged to help distinguish your work as a builder from the competition and ultimately resonate with future home buyers. The growing marketplace concentration on comfort, cost efficiency, code standards and (environmental) consciousness is creating renewed interest in building energy efficient, high-performance homes.

With the growing focus on the Four C’s, future home buyers and existing homeowners are beginning to pay more attention to insulation, air sealing and moisture management solutions. As a result, it is equally important that builders remain competitive in this space by staying current on the latest advancements, research and product innovations. Fortunately, you don’t have to do it alone.

Likely attributed in part to the rising energy costs, home buyers are now primed and ready to learn how they can increase the performance, comfort, energy efficiency of their home. These home buyers are also increasingly expressing an interest in exceeding – rather than simply meeting – energy efficient building codes.

Understandably, projected increases in housing starts and the new home construction boom makes it difficult to focus on anything but getting through the day and delivering the jobs on time. To help maximize your job site efficiency and bring the strongest solutions to your customers , local Certified Energy Expert® Professionals (CEEs), supported by Owens Corning, can be a valuable tool in your arsenal. These trained energy specialists can help your business stay at the forefront of the latest building science solutions in insulation, air sealing and moisture management.

This creates a unique opportunity for builders to engage these savvy home buyers in a more sophisticated dialogue that will elevate their understanding of the important role the building envelope plays in achieving a high-performance home that will deliver against each of the Four Cs. While it is unlikely we’ll hear a home buyer say, “I want to live in an uncomfortable home with drafts and unpredictable temperature control” or “I like wasting energy and having 30 percent higher energy costs on my heating and cooling,” homeowners have historically looked past the “guts” of the home to spend a majority of their time on aesthetic decisions during the building process.

CEE professionals also bring a sophisticated level of expertise addressing the complexity behind air movement and the interaction of moisture, heat and cold within a home’s walls, roof and interior space. Since we live in the “guts” of the home, we also are skilled in all types of installation techniques for maximizing energy efficiency and acoustics. From the latest local building codes and standards, quality assurance and Energy Star/DOE® programs, CEE Professionals can be a resource to your team to help you differentiate yourself in the market.

To connect with a local CEE in your region, please contact Ryan Jansen at 859.727.0500 Ryan Jansen is an Owens Corning™ Certified Energy Expert® professional based out of Erlanger, KY. Certified Energy Expert® professionals can be found in 27 states and across 60 markets. To locate a CEE or learn more about the Owens Corning™ Certified Energy Expert® program, visit http://www.owenscorning.com.’

Entrepreneurship Bootcamp What is “Entrepreneurship Bootcamp”? Northern Kentucky HBA has a long standing commitment to its member companies, be they the smallest one man operation or the largest multi-state corporations. In an effort to help all of our members, we have developed a one year program that has a focus on helping every company navigate the economic recovery that is moving full steam ahead. For almost a decade, area businesses have been struggling to make it every day and learning to survive. Hundreds of companies folded and others had to shrink down and weather the storm. While those strategies were necessary at the time, all of the good that they did in help companies through hard times can be quickly undone if companies fail to restart and jump back into the marketplace. Being, “Stuck on Survive”, can destroy a company when others are embracing the new economy and moving ahead.

To combat this, we have created an education track taught by movers and shakers in their fields, here to not only help you our members, but to foster the continued growth of the Northern Kentucky/Greater Cincinnati Area. Please, join us for these classes. You may not need them all for your yearly requirement at HBA but use them to help your business be better than it was yesterday and to prepare for tomorrow. We sincerely hope that our education program can help you and yours to enjoy the business that you have spent so much time creating. Look for classes marked with a These are our classes that make up the Autumn 2013 Entrepreneurship Bootcamp at HBA Northern Kentucky!

What’s New with Pella

Pella Impervia Dual-Color Option NOW AVAILABLE! Neither wind nor rain nor sleet or snow stops determined mail carriers. Nor do those elements and other climate extremes phase Pella Corporation’s energy-efficient Pella Impervia line, expanding in the Summer of 2011 to include White interior option for all units. Pella Impervia windows and patio doors offer more style and design flexibility for your customers. With the new dual-color option, Pella Impervia products can have a White interior with the choice of White, Tan or Brown exterior. Pella Impervia windows and patio doors arrive pre-finished with a powder-coat paint finish on both interior and exterior. This durable finish stays looking great for years with little care.

“We’re pleased to offer more innovative solutions to builders and homeowners living in areas where a stronger, more durable window is a must,” said Duane Putz, director of sales and marketing for Pella Impervia. “This product is made for hot, cold, wet or windy climates and now it’s available in more styles.” Pella Impervia can withstand the forces of Mother Nature without cracking, shrinking or warping in extreme weather conditions. The sleek-profiled innovative products made from Duracast®, the strongest most durable material in windows and doors, are virtually maintenancefree and well-suited to today’s busy lifestyles and balanced budgets for home and business owners.* Builders, remodelers and homeowners may choose from convenient factory prefinished brown, white or tan color options and now have a White interior!

For more information, please contact your local Pella representative or call 513-936-5240. 24

Did You Know You have to Notify?

O

ne of the items that will be on every employers plate this fall is a new requirement that you, the employer, must notify all of your employees and new hires about the new Health Care Exchanges that take effect on October 1, 2013. We want to make sure that everyone is aware of these notification requirements so, in conjunction with one of our administrators, we have some reference materials that you can use. The links below provide a draft cover letter and attached fillable PDF that is to be distributed to each employee. Feel free to use the cover letter draft as necessary. You will want to download new model noticess released by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) to comply with changes as a result of Health Care Reform. (http://www.dol. gov/ebsa/newsroom/tr13-02.html) New Model Exchange Notices – Distribute to

Employees No Later Than October 1, 2013 Following a delay in the original effective date (it was originally required in March), employers need to comply with the new requirement to provide employees a written notice with information about a Health Insurance Exchange (Marketplace) beginning this fall. Two separate notices are available from the DOL: • Model Notice for Employers Who Offer a Health Plan to Some or All Employees (http://www.dol.gov/ebsa/pdf/ FLSAwithplans.pdf ) • Model Notice for Employers Who Do Not Offer a Health Plan (http://www.dol.gov/ ebsa/pdf/FLSAwithoutplans.pdf ) Employers are required to provide the written notice to each current employee not later than

October 1, 2013, and to each new employee at the time of hiring beginning October 1, 2013 (a notice will generally be considered to be provided ‘at the time of hiring’ if it is furnished within 14 days of an employee’s start date). Employers must provide the notice automatically and free of charge to each employee, regardless of plan enrollment status or of part-time or full-time status. The notice may be distributed by first-class mail, or electronically if certain requirements are met. Employers do not need to provide a separate notice to dependents or other individuals who are or may become eligible for coverage under the plan but who are not employees. Keep in mind that HHS expects that the employees will use these sheets to provide information to the Exchange staff as they shop for coverage options.
