New Beginnings and What We Need to Know that We Don’t Know I just got back from the International Builders Show in Las Vegas. The show traffic is growing dramatically and there are new faces everywhere. Although I have only been at your HBA for 4 ½ years I have been around the Executive Officers Council (EOC) for 14 years due to my work with the Louisville association. I had never expected to see so many new and younger faces around the EOC. The recession has caused huge turnover around the country in our profession and all of the sudden this new guy became one of the old guys. I also chair the Professional Development Committee at the EOC and was recently installed as an EOC Regional Director for two years. On the committee we are working to try to connect new EO’s with mentors from their state association, other like sized local associations and NAHB. The reason is that there are so many new EO’s in our profession that simply don’t know what they don’t know and need help. The same goes around our HBA. We are seeing many new and younger faces here as we continue to recover. New companies are forming who don’t know the good old days and to them the recession and nascent recovery is their normal. There is so much knowledge that has been lost due to job loss and business closings during the recession that so many of our new guys of the last ten years are now the old guys that the younger people need help from. This year you will see more recognition of those relationships at our events and meetings. For instance at Table Top Night you likely noticed that our Directors, Officers and Past Presidents were provided ribbons to identify them as leaders in the crowd. Also, we had new member buttons to help identify a new member. When you see a person wearing a new member button please introduce yourself. Remember, at one time you were the one in the corner who didn’t know anyone too. Ask them why they joined the HBA and what they hope to get out of their membership. Then offer to connect them with the people they want to meet to improve their business, participate in our advocacy and political action efforts, or to help grow their knowledge and talents through our education programming. I was at our latest Mix and Mingle produced by our Sales & Marketing Council at Potterhill Home’s Pond Crossing in Campbell County. I saw two new members with their buttons, talked with them, found out about their business and connected them with people immediately. They were there to make business connections and grow their sign and printing business. We all need printing and I will be meeting with them soon to get some quotes for the HBA. They didn’t seem to know many people but they were making an effort. On my way out I talked to two Past Presidents and asked them to talk with the people wearing the new member buttons. The great thing about our HBA is that I knew they would and on my way out I could see our Past Presidents engaging these new HBA family members and making them feel at home and potentially setting an appointment to get a quote for their printing and sign needs. For those of you that have been around the HBA for a while, please take time to connect with our new members and for you newer members that want advice on how to benefit from the HBA talk with our leaders wearing their ribbons at our meetings. The aphorism is true. A rising tide lifts all boats. Reach out to one another so your business and association will be strong. Sincerely,

Brian A. Miller Executive Vice President Home Builders Association of Northern Kentucky

PAC NIGHT CAPS OFF RECORD FUNDRAISING FOR POLITICAL HOUSING CLUB OF NKY

T

he Political Housing Club of Northern Kentucky set a new all time record with this year’s fundraising efforts by raising $20,000. This was no small task as efforts began last fall. The fundraising was done in two phases. The first phase was a tiered giving campaign where members were asked to donate $1,000 (Golden Eagle Club), $500 (Foundation Club) or $300 (Political Housing Club). Depending upon the amount contributed determines the amount of rewards you receive throughout the year. The second phase was to sell tickets to PAC Night. Guests to the fundraiser paid $100 for each ticket which entered them into a drawing for $2,000. Once at the event attendees could enter to win Baskets from the Kentucky Bourbon Trail and the Kentucky Bourbon Festival, an iPad Air, or a Glock 9mm model 19 pistol.

L-R: Mike Kegley, The B.O.L.D. Company, Past President, NAHB National Area Chairman; Jim Stegman, Stegman Construction, Past President; Doug Delay, Schmidt Construction, Past President; Jason Lett, Wissmann Brothers, Past Associate President.

The evening was exciting with complimentary heavy hor d’oeuvres and a top shelf open bar. As the evening went on drawing began to see who would win the excellent prizes. First, Susan Hollon of Potterhill Homes won a bourbon basket. Second, Tony Berling of Triple Crown Developers won the other bourbon basket. Eric Kraft of Adam Miller Homes won the iPad Air. Adam Miller of Adam Miller Homes won the pistol. Then came the big drawing where Brian Jones of C.K. Ash Insurance, Jason Lett of Wissman Brothers, and Adam Chaney of Terrace Holdings, split the $2,000 cash prize. At that time we hade raised $19,375 leaving the PAC just $625 short of a $20,000 fundraising record. A plan was hatched by the winners to contribute back $225 each to the PAC to reach the $20,000 record. Our industry is proud of these individuals that have done so much to support their industry.

To check out the mobile app go to https://builderfusion.hbanky.com/bf/website/mobile/#/ association/119 or scan the QR Code to the right .

Marketing

In 2013 the HBA launched new advertising campaigns for its consumer event like the Cavalcade of Homes. As a result we have experienced greater consumer response in 2013. We will invest in $35,000 worth of media and combine that effort with an expanded public relations initiative that will result in greater exposure for the Cavalcade of Homes. The show guide will be distributed through Cincy Magazine and NKY Magazine.

Sponsorships

Sponsorships are available for the event. Gold sponsors will receive exposure through our advertising campaign as their company will be mentioned as a sponsor of the show, and their project will be featured on any print, TV or digital advertising. Gold Sponsors will rotate through the advertising campaign. Past sponsors are already telling us that this approach is resulting in far greater traffic and far better leads. Gold Sponsorships are $2,500 each. Up to six will be accepted.

Updating Your Sense of Tile For sixty years, Florida Tile has been a benchmark in the industry. As an innovator, we have marked many accomplishments, from building the first floor tile plant in the USA to introducing the first digitally printed products with our HDP – High Definition Porcelain lines. Throughout our history Florida Tile has been a pioneer, but equally as important, we have been a benchmark for style. We recognize and celebrate that commitment by making a great product & creating what our customers continue to want and our competitors try to copy.
