Welcome Welcome to the Hawaii Baptist Academy Arts & Film Festival, affectionately known as HBAAFF. It has been two years since we have experienced HBAAFF as an on-campus event. By God’s grace, during that time, we were still able to host the festival. As a matter of fact, the online version of HBAAFF did some things that the on-campus venue could not. Online, the festival was attended by people from around the world, and we saw more visitors attending online than our campus could accommodate if it were in person. It has been evident that God was, and still is good. We were still able to make good art, innovate, tell good stories, build community, celebrate with those closest to us, and be reminded of God’s love. This year HBAAFF returns to campus; though, regardless of its form, the intent for HBAAFF has always been centered around these things.

At HBA we promote our school’s Mission and Expected School-wide Learning Results, or ESLRs. These intentional sensibilities for our community are printed on page 2. Take some time to read through them. Don’t they sound like a community that you want to be a part of? Yes, I know that on this side of eternity a human community can be messy at times, but it is still good. God has designed us to dwell in community with Him and one another. I hope that when we experience the art, exhibits, and stories here on campus alongside others that together we are reminded how much each of us matter to God and how important community is for us all.

Meet our Teachers Maribelle Fernandez ▪ Middle School Band Director ▪ My musical journey started when I chose to play the clarinet in middle school band, but I was not serious about band until I watched an anime about music! The pieces and characters in that show inspired me to practice and take lessons. Through band, I learned valuable lessons about discipline and perseverance, key qualities to becoming a better musician. When I struggled, my teachers were always there to help and support me. As challenging as it was to work on our music, it was fulfilling to have all the parts come together when we performed. I believe that learning music shaped my character into the person that I am today. I want to teach my students the lessons I learned and give them the same enjoyable experience I had when I was in band.

Anna Hamaguchi ▪ Theater Teacher ▪ I never liked being the center of attention, which might sound strange for a theater teacher. However, I’ve always liked observing others - their facial expressions, voice, gestures, and overall behavior. What I love about doing theater is the ability to enter the environment of another world, and feel what it’s like to be someone else. At its best, theater is a beautiful experience of empathy shared between performers and audiences.

I started acting in film and on the stage after receiving my undergraduate degree in film in Los Angeles, where I grew up. After spending many years teaching, auditioning, and acting in LA and New York, I ended up here in Hawaii where my husband grew up. I got my MFA in acting at UH Manoa, and am now enjoying teaching theater (and history) here at HBA, which I consider a privilege to do so.

Tiffany Kakinami ▪ Art Teacher ▪ When I was in elementary school, I won an art contest for young students and was awarded free summer art classes at the Honolulu Museum of Art. I continued to grow as an artist and loved drawing anything that captivated me. Being an artist as a teenager was something personal that I kept to myself, but, as I got older, I learned to lean into the gifts that God has given me and realized that my art is a form of worship. Art is a response to the world God has created, and He is always speaking to us! I started sharing my art more, knowing God can speak to my friends and families through my creations or that seeing them might just bring some beauty into their lives. It is such a blessing to teach at HBA where I can encourage so many kids to be creative and to use their art for God’s glory.

Sean Malinger ▪ Visual & Performing Arts Chair, Film & Photography Teacher ▪ I think I have always been a storyteller. I wrote short stories throughout my childhood, bought my first movie camera as a freshman in high school, became a photographer in the United States Navy, and afterward got a degree in literature. I love telling and experiencing good stories. I also want to be part of a good story. I believe this is the reason I have the vocation (calling) of a teacher. We begin each day in our film & photography classes with a reminder that we are storytellers, living in God’s story, and it is good. We do this because I want my students to tell and experience good stories and be part of a good story.

Samantha Mira ▪ Middle School Art & Drama Teacher ▪ Art form + Content Area = Arts Integration! Art is everywhere and I love making art connections in everything we do, see, hear, and say. I have been an educator for 13 years now, and when I taught in the DOE I was blessed to have been a part of the Turnaround Arts Program, which started under the leadership of Former First Lady Michelle Obama. It was then when I learned about the many different art forms and discovered ways to incorporate art within the different content areas (specifically math, science, social studies, and English). Now, my new teaching mission is to bring faith and learning into Arts Integration Art is everywhere and I am so excited to bring Arts Integration to HBA!

Karin Miyasato ▪ Elementary Music Teacher ▪ I love music! Music touches the heart and soul of a person.

My musical journey started at an early age beginning with the piano, the flute and vocals, as well as other instruments.

I obtained my Bachelor’s degree in Education with an emphasis in Music and have taught in the DOE and private school sector as a music teacher and classroom teacher. God has used music to open doors for me to travel to many countries and states, as well as here in the islands, to minister the Gospel of Christ, to be part of recording albums and most importantly, to use my gifts to worship the Lord. Here at HBA, I would like to share with our students how music can not only be enjoyed but be used to positively impact and make a difference to their generation by drawing people to know Christ.

Garrett Omoto ▪ Art Teacher ▪ I feel I have lived a charmed life as an artist. At first, I did not know what I would do with my art degree, but I have since had the privilege of working in the animation industry and doing freelance work on children’s books and publications. I moved into teaching because I wanted to help students become better artists and possibly even pursue that field. My overarching goal as an art educator is to avoid having students hate art by the end of my class. I cannot guarantee that they will end up loving art and their own accomplishments, but I try to set up my curriculum choices and presentations for them to succeed. Teaching here at the high school has been fulfilling. I feel I have more of a direct influence to mentor students as they enter into the next phase of their education.

Pat Ota ▪ Art Teacher ▪ When I was in the 3rd grade, I remember drawing a stegosaurus and being surprised and delighted that it appeared to be accurate. My teacher encouraged me to do more. I have spent my life working to create images that accurately represent something from life or an idea. One of the most practical things I learned in high school was graphic design. I am compelled to adjust compositions whether in a painting, a poster, or on a mathematics test. Although I love teaching, learning, and mathematics, I have found that there is always room for visual expression.

All this comes from our loving creator who has placed this desire in my heart when he made us in his image. Observing, recording, and creating is an important part of worship. I am honored to have the opportunity to teach AP Art & Design where we cultivate humility, curiosity, love, and commitment.

Joelle Spainhour ▪ Middle School Art Teacher ▪ I have always been captivated by art. As a young child, I could spend hours at a time just drawing or coloring. However, I didn’t choose to pursue art in college until my senior year of high school. I attended Azusa Pacific University and Mars Hill University, graduating with a major in Studio Art, Graphic Design and Spanish. Since then, I have used my artistic skills in freelance work as well as in international ministry.

Education is a lifelong process, and I believe we always have the ability to learn new things. This might be the most important concept to emphasize in art class, where many students assume that natural artistic talent is required to succeed. My goal is that each of my students will discover new ways of pushing his or her own creativity by taking risks and trying new things. I believe God has made us all to be creative beings – after all, He created us in His image! That creativity isn’t limited only to art-making, but art is a wonderful way to explore this part of how God has designed us.

Dwaine Woo ▪ High School Band Director ▪ Music is a big part of my life. Teaching music is my profession, playing music is my hobby, writing music is my passion, and shopping for music equipment is what I do for recreation. I am not very diverse. However, I have worked in private business (family construction and distribution), retail, and various teaching positions from the DOE, to private lessons and at the university level. God has blessed me with many wonderful opportunities to perform and write music at all levels. It is also a blessing to be here at HBA. I like to think that this is my reward for persevering through the challenges in life. Music class is more than learning to play your instrument. It’s about developing character and challenging yourself to more than you thought possible.

Juri Yamashita ▪ Art Teacher ▪ Throughout childhood I always drew, painted, and made things, but I didn’t know until senior year that I might want to go into art. My art teacher rushed to help me put together a portfolio and I ended up at NYU for Studio Art. I lived and breathed art with my tribe of artists and took other classes to expand my knowledge of the rest of the world. Throughout college I worked at numerous creative offices and studios, but it was my weekend teaching job at the YWCA in Queens that sparked my desire to become an art teacher. After 7 schools and 3 states, I came to HBA, my husband’s alma mater. I’ve been here for about 10 years now. Even after all that experience, I’m still learning about how students think and create. I believe creativity and the desire to create is a fundamental experience for any child and adult.

Todd Yokotake ▪ Choir Director ▪ “When words fail, music speaks.” My college professor once said that some of the greatest moments in your musical career will happen during a rehearsal, not necessarily during a performance. There is no greater sense of synergism when collaboration occurs to produce that one ephemeral moment. As an educator, it is my goal to create those kinds of moments, and to establish a platform that allows us to be introspective by allowing the words on the page to come alive and to instill meaning from our own personal life experiences.

Character design tests the ultimate limits of an artist’s imagination, which is why I chose to wrap my investigation around it. To add a sense of profoundness, I connected it with aspects of humanity to represent the different corners of human nature without restricting myself to the rules of reality. Utilizing different characteristics of real animals and putting them together, I created characters of my own that could easily represent the dark and light sides of all of us.

The two consistent questions throughout my sustained investigation have been either ‘Is it worth demolishing the natural world to advance ours?’ or ‘How can we preserve a natural world in times of advancement?’ I tried to appeal to how sort of strange and mystical nature was and that the only reason we had grown uncompassionate towards it was because we had become accustomed to it.

For my investigation I focused on the changes and experiences we have when we grow up. When we grow up we experience many feelings, problems, pain, love, and many other things. From birth, a person will not only develop physically, but mentally and possibly spiritually. We grow up from how our mentors and authorities guided, misguided, corrected, or how they did not correct us. We also develop from our peers and the culture around us. Life is also filled with joy, beauty, anger, hate, regret, and death.

I was trying to communicate a wintery feeling with this piece. I wanted to make you feel that you were high in a mountain looking down at the beautiful scenery down below. I am not a very good artist but I enjoy art because it is a way for me to relax and express myself.

JACEY KAGE (‘26)

When beginning my project, the song “Banana Phone” was stuck in my head, hence the banana.

While bananas tend to pull childish, bright themes, the final product feels heavier with dark ink and intimidating hands. The busy astronauts and hands reflect my efforts in scratching each line and dot. In a way, the subjects of the piece and I work with one another to produce the slightly unsettling and mysterious Banana Moon.

Photography allows me to capture rare moments, people, and objects from my own personal perspective. No two photos are alike in any way. The angle, lighting, and subject of interest contribute to the specificity and uniqueness of each shot.

KAYLA FUNAKOSHI (‘22), Photo 1 Honestly, the thoughts that were going through my head as I was taking this picture were only concerning checking off another one of the 51 concepts we had to capture for our composition project. Later on, as I was answering Mr. Malinger’s reflection questions, I began to understand why I took a liking to photography. It can put things in a new perspective, such as something so simple being portrayed much more elaborately. Personally, photography has helped me find a deeper appreciation for the little things in life. Even in the most mundane places, it’s easy to find the beauty within.

Photography is a way to share my point of view. Everyone will see things differently, but photography allows me to capture what I am seeing and share that with whoever looks at my photos. I also believe that photography is a way for us to capture the beauty of the world no matter where you are.

Basically, it allows you to be a storyteller and tell your own story.

KAI IWAMURA (‘22) Photo 7 I believe photography is interesting because it can not only be used to keep memories, but allows us to see God’s glory in his creation. I am currently in my first year of photography and I am enjoying it a lot more than I expected.

I enjoy photography because it has allowed me to get out of my comfort zone and capture moments in time I can look back on in the future. In this piece, I am trying to communicate the detail and perfection in God’s creation. With our lives being fast paced and constantly changing, I would want people to realize the beauty within the things around us that we often overlook.

This exhibit features automata projects from the Intro to Engineering Design Class. Using design software, the students have to create a digital model of their design before building their project.

The automata is a mechanical system built to automate the motion of objects.

HBA’s Theater Class presents “The Alibis”

by Jonathan Dorf and six others.

We challenged eight playwrights to find the comedy in crime in this rogue’s gallery of ten-minute plays wrapped in a classic whodunnit. When eccentric billionaire J. Leslie Arlington is murdered, a clueless detective finds the suspects are all reluctant to admit their alibis . . . because they were all committing other ridiculous crimes at the time. You never know what’s coming next when your suspects include disgruntled chefs, candy-obsessed robbers, and vengeful divas, but one thing’s for certain: Every alibi is absolutely absurd.

If your ticket reveals one of the Expected School-wide Learning Results, you are a winner.

Take your winning ticket to the Learning Center and claim your prize.

FIND ALL 8 TICKET STATIONS! In eight of the HBAAFF exhibits you will find laser cut ticket stations. Place your ticket face down on a ticket station, then using a crayon create a rubbing of the symbol for that station. Those who collect rubbings from all eight stations and return to the Learning Center with their ticket will have an opportunity to win a prize.
