Welcome When we explore the world with curiosity we find there is something wonderful that envelopes and even includes us.

As we encounter others, experience their works, interact with them, and hear their stories we begin to see how connected we are. What may have seemed like our own personal narratives are really inseparable from an eternal one.

As you explore the exhibits and experiences at HBAAFF remember there was a heartbeat behind every brush stroke, camera angle, sculpture, song, movement, and invention. There is a good story going on, and we are all part of it. Your part in this story matters because you matter to God. May tonight be a reminder of how much.

The ability to travel through time has fascinated the young and old for generations. The Time Vine follows an irresponsible boy with the ability to speed up time.

What do you hear when you listen to music?

The Music of Erich Zann takes an oblivious music student on a journey of experiencing the hidden sensations within the melodies of the music. This story uses unconventional ways of communicating through notes and rhythms, which provides the audience with a newfound way of thinking as well.

Because of her love for storytelling, senior Emma Tamashiro signed up for film, photography, and theater classes.

Tamashiro says these classes have shown her just how much work it takes to put on plays, make films, and communicate through pictures. She explained, “There are so many things to think about when doing any of these [forms of art.] For example, lighting makes a huge difference in how a story is told. Whether it’s the

color or brightness of the light, different combinations communicate different things to the audience.”

As a film and theater student this semester, Tamashiro has found much satisfaction having to juggle the variety of things that go into film and theater productions. “One thing I enjoy about the arts is all the different elements it takes to create an experience. There’s a visual experience, an auditory experience, and so much more. The ability to be a part of that is exhilarating,” she said.

“Intro to Film has taught me to pay attention to all kinds of details like sound, props and camera angles because details can make or break your movie.”

AP Studio Art students develop a portfolio of three sections of work that is informed and guided by observation, research, experimentation, discussion, critical analysis, and reflection, relating individual practices to the art world.

These students are becoming inventive artistic scholars who contribute to visual culture through art making.

The 2-dimentional art gallery showcases the work of students in drawing and painting classes.

Classes represented in the gallery include 2D Basic; Advanced Mixed Media; Basic Art; Basic Drawing; Advanced Drawing & Painting; and Middle School Art Basics A & B, and Cartooning.

In Basic Art, students learn printmaking, nature painting and how to draw using negative spaces. In Basic Drawing, students learn how to do perspective drawing, charcoal still life and fantasy drawings. Students in Advanced Drawing & Painting explore surreal drawing and drawing on Scratchboard, and learn how to paint with watercolor and acrylic.

3-Dimensional Art Gallery → Exhibit Location: D301

The 3-dimensional art gallery showcases the work of students in ceramics and mixed media classes.

Classes represented in the gallery include Middle School Art Basics, Ceramics 1 through 3, Basic Mixed Media, and Advanced Mixed Media.

Students in ceramics classes learn hand-building and wheel-throwing techniques, while mixed media classes use a mixture of materials and techniques including paper collage, wax painting, spray paint, and found objects to create their work.

Middle School Art students create art using papier-mâché for masks, imaginary animals made with Super Sculpey, clay for nature-inspired tiles, and plaster for casting self-portrait hands.

laughter that I thought of it as a masterpiece. Although he strongly disagrees with me, I don’t think Oze is good at art. But boy, oh boy, that guy is an amazing artist.”

Wiemken, currently in Advanced Drawing & Painting, believes that people don’t have to be good at art in order to be good artists. He explained, “I know a guy named Oze Farris for example. One day, Oze and I were drawing in Physics class and he drew a horribly distorted portrait of me. That terrible drawing brought me so much joy and

Wiemken loves how there are no limitations to what one can create through drawing. “All I need is a paper and some markers and boom, there’s a colorful hairy man in the desert,” he said.

Senior Christianne Young did not expect her freshman year Basic Art class to be more than an elective to fill an open slot in her schedule.

day that I forget to breathe, and so art class forces me to not focus on school work but instead mindlessly explore my imagination and enjoy the beauty of things around me,” she said.

She quickly found that the class became the highlight of her day. Now in her senior year, Young is currently in the Advanced Drawing & Painting class. “Art has taught me to take time out of my day to be still and relax instead of feeling rushed. I find it so easy to get caught up in all the assignments and tests that I have coming up every

Young also credits her love for art class to Art teacher Garrett Omoto. She said, “Mr. Omoto is a teacher that I truly respect, whether it be from his soothing music in class, calm demeanor, or genuine interest and investment in his students,” she added.

Through art, senior Jayni Ishikawa says she has learned “to take in the beauty of the world, even if it’s falling apart.”

Ishikawa, who is currently in Advanced Mixed Media and who took Animation last semester, became inspired to pursue art because of her older sister. “I wanted to be as talented as she was, and I honestly find art enjoyable,” she explained.

Ishikawa loves that art continuously challenges her. “I enjoy the fact that I can always improve. Being perfect means that you can no longer improve what you’re doing.

So I’m glad that I can always become better at something I love,” she said.

“Art class is one of the classes that’s most important to me. Creating my own art and discovering what other people create has helped me to grow in empathy and to better understand myself and others. It has also provided me with an important means of self-expression.”

Sophomore Tani Yoshioka, Basic Art and Digital Photography student, had a clear goal in mind when she signed up for art class. “I already liked to paint as a hobby and I wanted to learn better techniques and tips,” she said.

So far, she says she has learned that the best work takes time and careful thought. “Art is more fulfilling if the artist has some kind of emotional connection to the piece,” she added.

Yoshioka loves how art keeps her in touch with her imagination. “The main thing I enjoy about art is that I can explore my creative side during school. Only having academic classes in my schedule can be draining, but art gives me a break where I can focus on something other than academics,” she explained.

Photography

Students in the Photography class will be giving presentations of their best photographs tonight.

The high school Photography class covers the basics of using a DSLR camera as well as the more complex aspects of photography. In tonight’s presentations, students will explain the intent and techniques used behind their photographs.

The middle school drama class will present “Smarty Pants”, a play by Bradley Hayward.

Science Exhibits

Both middle and high school students have contributed to the Science exhibits.

The exhibits showcase student projects (including a few award winning Science Fair projects), model volcanoes, cell models, interactive displays, student videos and more. Come experience the world of HBA science and engineering!

Technology Exhibit The Technology Exhibit features student projects from the Applied Engineering class, and an engineering design challenge for festival goers.

Engineering Design Challenge: Your engineering firm is bidding on a contract to design the newest building to meet the demands of Oahu’s housing needs. The winning design must be stable, have a small footprint, a large volume, a low cost, and, since Hawaii is a beautiful place to live, it too must be beautiful.

Instructions: Your team must build a prototype model using PVC pipes and fittings of a building design that would win the bid.

Symphonic Band → Exhibit Location: Center Stage (6:00 - 6:15 P.M.)

A select group from HBA’s various bands will open the the festival at 6 p.m. at the center stage by the Senior Pavilion.

The HBA Band Program is the biggest performing arts group at HBA, with 283 student musicians in five bands—Middle School Beginning Band, Middle School Advanced Band, Concert Band 1, Concert Band 2, and Symphonic Wind Ensemble.

Most recently, the high school Symphonic Wind Ensemble garnered top “1+” scores in every category for their performances of “Les Preludes” and “Music of the Spheres” at this year’s Parade of Bands on Saturday, April 13. Since the 1970s, the Oahu Band Directors Association (OBDA) has hosted the Parade of Bands, which brings judges from the mainland and even overseas to score participating school bands on qualities such as tone, technique, and musical artistry.

The Photoshop class focuses on artistic expression in the digital age by addressing the basic concept of photography (both film and digital cameras) and digital imaging using Adobe Photoshop.
