Capturing Memories is about a photographer named Skyler who takes pictures for free in order to cope with a difficult period in her life. Memories are powerful and valuable things; through her work Skylar helps others realize this.
Coffee Stain is the story of Ethan, a young man who has a problem with taking responsibility for his actions. After he accidentally damages a book at the library, the consequences begin to catch up with him when someone else tries to borrow the book.

A talking dragon, a bugged bee, a tech-frustrated turtle, and a jumpy cat are featured in the Introduction to Animation class’ presentation for the HBA Arts and Film Festival.
Two stories, one allegiance, in the face of hatred, adversity, and prejudice, We Are U.S. reminds us what it means to be an American.
Encore Films HBAAFF is proud to present encore presentations of films made by HBA Film Studies students over the past 14 years. Films from the following courses will be available for screening: The Art & History of Film, Advanced Filmmaking, Digital Filmmaking, Documentary Filmmaking, Intro to Animation, and Greco Roman History.

AP Studio Art students develop a portfolio of three sections of work that is informed and guided by observation, research, experimentation, discussion, critical analysis, and reflection, relating individual practices to the art world. These students are becoming inventive artistic scholars who contribute to visual culture through art making.

The 2-dimentional art gallery showcases the work of students in drawing and painting classes. 4

Classes represented in the gallery include 2D Basic, Basic Art, Basic Drawing, Advanced Drawing & Painting, and Middle School Painting. In Basic Art, students learn printmaking, nature painting and how to draw using negative spaces. In Basic Drawing, students learn how to do perspective drawing, self-portraits, charcoal still life and fantasy drawings. Students in Advanced Drawing and Painting explore surreal drawing and drawing on Scratchboard, and learn how to paint with watercolor and acrylic.

The 3-dimensional art gallery showcases the work of students in ceramics and mixed media classes.

Classes represented in the gallery include Middle School Art Basics, Ceramics 1 through 3, Basic Mixed Media, and Advanced Mixed Media. Students in ceramics classes learn hand-building and wheelthrowing techniques, while mixed media classes use a mixture of materials and techniques including paper collage, wax painting, spray paint, and found objects to create their work. Middle School Art students create art using paper mache and imaginary animals made with Super Sculpey.

Elementary Art → Exhibit Location: Learning Center This year’s exhibition is inspired by a phrase coined by Marc Chagall: “The color of love”. Fourth through sixth graders discussed what they thought Chagall meant by this statement while kindergarteners through third graders brainstormed what the “color of love” would look like. The students also spent time discussing how without God, they would run out of love very quickly. Art teacher Katie Small said, “Our art this year is a wide variety of artwork that is a vibrant expression of God’s never ending, outreaching love.”
“As an artist, I am incredibly inspired by my students. They have a real spirit of ‘try’ and a creative ability to problem-solve. We are starting to cultivate an atmosphere where we collaborate more and give each other constructive feedback. The Elementary art exhibit displays a small sampling of what will be seen at the elementary school’s upcoming Young Artists Exhibition from May 9 through 11.

Photography
Students in the Photography class will be giving presentations of their best photographs tonight. The high school Photography class covers the basics of using a DSLR camera as well as the more complex aspects of photography. In tonight’s presentations, students will explain the intent and techniques used behind their photographs.

Middle School Drama → Exhibit Location: MSMPR (6:30 - 7:30 P.M.)

The Middle School drama class will present “The Actor Games”, a play by Wade Bradford. In this dystopian/Hunger Games parody everyone is starving...for attention! Society’s obsession with all things drama has become so distracting, the Capitol has outlawed all auditions and has divided the population into ten districts: Greek Tragedy, Shakespeare Drama, Commedia Dell’Arte, and others. During the annual Actor Games, a tribute from each district competes to become a star. The losers must suffer the fate of the Fallback Wheel. This year, Meryl hopes to become the first ever winner from High School Drama. Unfortunately, the odds are never in her favor. The Actor Games is a fast-paced one-act play that provides lots of comedy opportunities for each cast member, as well as a humorous overview of modern and historic acting methods. ~ Synopsis fom Eldrige Publishing

Science Exhibit
→ Exhibit Location: D101 and D102
Both middle and high school students have contributed to the Science exhibits. The exhibits showcase student projects (including a few award winning Science Fair projects), model volcanoes, bottle rockets, interactive displays, student videos and more. Visitors can also get up close to unqiue marine life at the touch tank display or “test drive” a few student-built robots.

Technology Exhibit The Technology Exhibit features student produced video games, robotics displays, student inventions, and an interactive engineering activity.

Engineering Design Challenge: Your engineering firm is bidding on a contract to design the newest building to meet the demands of Oahu’s housing needs. The winning design must be stable, have a small footprint, a large volume, a low cost, and, since Hawaii is a beautiful place to live, it too must be beautiful. Instructions: Your team must build a prototype model using PVC pipes and fittings of a building design that would win the bid.
Wind Ensemble → Exhibit Location: Centerstage (6:00 - 6:15 P.M.)
Representing the HBA Wind Ensemble at the festival tonight is the high school Legacy Band. The Wind Ensemble is the most advanced of the five bands that make up HBA’s middle and high school band program. Over Spring Break, 54 Wind Ensemble members toured the East Coast, performing for HBA’s Mainland Advisory Council members in Virginia, and at the Sounds of Spring International Music Festival in Carnegie Hall, New York.

“There were two main purposes of this trip,” explained band director Brad Shimizu. “ One was to give the students the opportunity to play in Carnegie Hall, one of the most famous performance spaces in the world. Another was the chance to build relationship with the Mainland Advisory Council through a performance at First Baptist Church in Virginia.” The Wind Ensemble is preparing their end of the year concert, which will feature all the bands in HBA’s band program. The concert will take place on Saturday, May 12, at McKinley High School.
