How It Works Bipolar ionization is the process of taking oxygen from the air and charging it to create ions. Charged ions then attach to microparticles in the air, such as viruses, mold, bacteria, and allergens, and deactive those microparticles. In the case of viruses, deactiviation occurs when ions cause a chemical reaction on the surface of the virus cell membrane, thus inactivating the virus. Also, by causing the microparticles to cluster, the charged ions make the microparticles larger and more easily captured by a centalized filtration system.
