Throughout my rotation, I gained exposure to a diverse range of clients and industries across the UK, while working closely with teams based in both the Cheltenham and Cardiff offices. This allowed me to develop a broader perspective of audit engagements and adapt to different working styles, client needs, and organisational structures. The varied nature of the work enhanced my commercial awareness and provided insight into how audit approaches are tailored across sectors and client sizes.
In addition, I had the chance to work closely with a number of highly skilled and supportive associates and managers, whose encouragement and willingness to share their knowledge played a key role in my development. Learning directly from their experience helped me build confidence in my own abilities and gain a clearer understanding of how audits come together in practice. Through working alongside them, I gained a much clearer picture of how audit work fits together in practice and what is expected when delivering high quality work in a professional environment.

Eleanor Plater Healthcare to OMB Tax

Lu Han Business Solutions to Audit
I really enjoyed my time in tax. It was a great opportunity to learn new skills while working with new people. Our team has regular communication with the OMB tax team, so it was really interesting to be on the other side. Previously, I’d only really worked with corporation tax, so having the chance to work on P11Ds and personal tax returns definitely increased my knowledge base and meant that I had lots of useful information to take back with me to my accounts team. The people in tax were lovely to work with, and my time there helped me develop new connections across the wider firm. I’d recommend a secondment to anyone who’s looking to further their development and try something new!
I had the privilege of rotating to the Audit Team for several months in 2024 The team welcomed me warmly and provided continuous support, making my transition smooth and enjoyable.
The Rotation allowed me to develop a deeper understanding of audit processes and methods. The collaborative environment fostered by the Audit Team was a highlight of my rotation. I had the opportunity to work closely with experienced associates who were always willing to share their knowledge and insights. Their mentorship helped me enhance my analytical skills and broaden my perspective on auditing practices.
Moreover, the rotation provided me with a chance to improve my communication and teamwork abilities and the time spent with the team has significantly contributed to my professional growth.

Last year, I went on a rotation to the OMB tax team, and I really enjoyed it! As I work in audit, we communicate with the tax team regularly and work together on a number of clients. Therefore, I thought it would be great to go and work with the team. During my rotation I learned how to prepare P11Ds, personal tax returns, and corporation tax computations. This was really insightful as it meant I could see what happens after we send the accounts over to the tax team from audit and follow the whole process through. It was also a great opportunity to meet new people and work in a different office!

If you are joining us for a rotation, you are about to experience one of the most interesting areas of corporate finance. Our Lead Advisory team helps businesses make big decisions, whether that is selling, buying or raising funds. While we work across a range of sectors, Hazlewoods is particularly well known for its expertise in healthcare and social care transactions.
The team is led by John Lucas, who brings extensive experience in guiding complex deals and ensuring clients achieve the best possible outcomes.
As a trainee, you will get hands-on exposure to the deal-making process. Typical responsibilities include:
■ Research and analysis: Looking at market trends, industry data and company financials to support valuations and identify potential buyers or acquisition targets.
■ Financial modelling: Building and reviewing models to assess business performance and forecast future scenarios.
■ Preparing key documents: Helping create pitch decks and Information Memorandums that present businesses in the best possible light.
■ Deal execution support: Assisting with project management, liaising with clients and other advisers to keep transactions moving.
The pace is fast and no two days are the same. You will develop technical skills, commercial awareness and sectorspecific knowledge, particularly in social care where deals often involve unique regulatory and operational considerations. It is a fantastic opportunity to see how corporate finance really works and to play a part in shaping transactions that make a real impact.
If you are curious, proactive and ready to learn, you will find this rotation both challenging and rewarding. Welcome to the team, we are excited to have you on board.

The Corporate Finance team specialises in carrying out financial due diligence for corporate acquirers, private equity houses and other investors or lenders. We work closely to support them with their buy and build strategies.
We have won numerous awards in both the South West and nationally in recent years, which have recognised the expertise we have in our team.
Over the last 20 years or so, we have developed a focus in certain sector specialisms including the following:
▪ Health and Social Care
▪ Veterinary
▪ Dental
▪ Schools
▪ Insurance Brokers
▪ Estate and Letting Agents
▪ Holiday Lettings
We are generally instructed by our clients to evaluate the financial performance of the company that they are looking to acquire. By the time we are instructed, our clients have made an offer to acquire the company, which is typically based on a multiple of profits. Part of what we do is to carry out a financial appraisal to determine whether we think the business is making the profits that they have presented to the acquirer.
Whilst each transaction is individual, the work involved in the process will typically include:
1. Detailed analysis of the underlying accounting records and gaining an understanding as to how these map to the financial statements.
2. Historical trading review and determination of current run rate profitability based on current information provided by the target company (for example, in a school we would analyse the current pupil list and current staff lists to form a view on currently profitability).
3. Detailed review of recent balance sheets of the target company, with a focus on the working capital cycle and intramonth cash requirements, and the net cash/debt position of the target business. This will later feed in to advise when reviewing the legal documentation that will bind the transaction.
4. Discuss initial findings and any potential red flags with the client.
5. Review historical tax compliance and assess any potential tax risks that may be inherited by the buyer on completion of the transaction.
6. Draft the financial due diligence report.
The majority of the work involves use of Excel and you will quickly develop strong analytical skills.
We look to provide as much exposure into the detailed work as possible to our trainees, who have access to senior management and partners.

We offer practical experience in the following:
▪ Preparation of year end accounts using Digita Accounts, our working papers are all on Excel. Accounts preparation includes reconciliation of balance sheet items such as fixed assets, accruals, prepayments, VAT (for some nondental clients), HP, loans and many more. Clients use a mixture of Sage, Xero, QuickBooks, Excel or in some cases nothing, so the accounts are then prepared from bank statements.
▪ Dental accounts involve additional summarising of NHS and associate pay statements and this is done on Excel. This helps advise clients on a practice’s performance; we also do benchmarking/KPI work.

Our team recently won the Business Advisors and Accountants award at the 2025 Social Care Premium Suppliers Awards.

Our client base ranges from small owner-managed companies and charities to large and complex groups with over 100 subsidiaries and revenues in excess of £300 million.
We are located at The Prom Cheltenham office and split into an accounts team and an audit team. Our audits are currently a spread of working on-site, working off-site and a hybrid of the two depending on the client’s needs. Any overnight stays due to the geographical dispersion of our clients is usually limited to a couple of nights, depending on the needs of the specific audit. We will provide you with opportunities and challenges, with the necessary support from seniors, managers and partners.
If you’re ready to push yourself, try something new, or gain hands-on experience with some of our largest and most complex clients, a rotation into the Healthcare team is the perfect next step.

The Legal team are one of the largest law firm specialist teams in the UK, working with over 200 law firms and 1,000 individual law firm owners. We are a full service team with clients ranging from sole traders to large groups, as well as the relevant business and personal tax, Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) Accounts Rules audits and advisory, including mergers and acquisitions, partner succession, benchmarking, performance, management reporting and changes to the practice structure.
There is high level of responsibility to junior members of staff at an early stage. This is true of the SRA Accounts Rules audits, which are managed by new starters within a couple of months. This gives immediate partner and client interaction to aid development and individual goals.
We are well represented in the sector, working with the Law Society and the ICAEW’s Solicitors Group. Our work with the Law Society is nationally known, as we produce their annual Financial Benchmarking Survey.
We have a large intake of trainees (nearly half the team are trainees). And there is a fun social environment in the team with a great work life balance. Most of our team of 55 work in two open plan floors in the Cheltenham Windsor House office.
We often visit clients at their offices, which are in almost all major cities in the UK as well as some in more remote towns. Some of our clients premises are multi million pound buildings and are superb places to work. Our new starters often enjoy the ‘stayaways’, as it gives a good excuse to socialise in the evenings!
We offer practical experience in the following:
▪ Preparation of year end accounts. This includes reconciliation of balance sheet items. Our clients use a wide range of specialist solicitors software, but also some use more common software such as Sage and Xero. We then use benchmarking to assist our clients with financial performance. Given Law firms work quite similarly to accountancy firms; there are lots of similarities to Hazlewoods which helps understand how our firm works too.
▪ SRA Accounts Rules audits - An example of client money would be where an individual purchases a property; this money sits in a solicitor’s client account before completion. We are required by the SRA to carry out an audit on the client account based on a set of rules: https://www.sra.org.uk/solicitors/standardsregulations/accounts-rules/. The audits are performed using CCH, and we have a tailored work programme for each client. The client receives a report and management letter at the end of each audit. Trainees take ownership of the whole audit, including planning, fieldwork, and completion (with manager involvement for completion). This gives trainees a lot of exposure to clients. This also assists with advisory work and clients love the added value we give to them.
▪ Performance of statutory accounts audit. We often visit our clients to complete fieldwork testing, and generally these are in high-end offices with impressive facilities.
▪ Preparation of business tax computations and returns using Alphatax.
▪ Preparation of partnership and personal tax computations and returns using Digita Tax.
▪ Preparation of management accounts.
