HOW THEY ENTER WORLD MARKET

The company has exploded in the past decade, becoming Asia's biggest clothing retailer. And Uniqlo's leaders have ambitious goals to make the brand the leader in retail worldwide, according to The Wall Street Journal. Uniqlo, which focuses on mass-producing affordable basics in dozens of colors, got its start in the Japanese suburbs. Less than 20 years later, it's laid its stake along swanky shopping streets in major global cities.

UP AND DOWN

The company opened 21 stores in the United Kingdom by 2002, but only eight remained open in 2006. Fast Retailing executives said they didn't do a good job of establishing a "brand identity" before setting up shop and were learning from their mistake.

PRIME LOCATION

Most of Uniqlo's stores are in Japan, but it also has locations in the U.S., France, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, China and Taiwan, among other countries. Prime locations include major shopping streets in New York, London, and Paris.

HISTORY OF UNIQLO

On 2 June 1984, it opened a unisex casual wear store in Fukuro-machi, Naka-ku, Hiroshima, under the name "Unique Clothing Warehouse". Initially, the brand was going to be registered as a shortened contraction of "unique clothing". However, in 1988, during administration work in Hong Kong for registering the brand, staff in charge of registration misread the "C" as "Q", and that is how the brand name was born.

Tadashi Yanai then changed the store name to "Uniqlo" across Japan. In September 1991, the name of the company was changed from "Ogori Shōji" to "Fast Retailing", and by April 1994, there were over 100 Uniqlo stores operating throughout in Japan.

In November 1998, it opened their first urban Uniqlo store in Tokyo's trendy Harajuku dis trict, and outlets soon spread to major cities throughout Japan. In 2001, sales turnover and gross profit reached a new peak, with over 500 retail stores in Japan. When Uniqlo decided to expand overseas, it separated Uniqlo from the parent company, and estab lished Fast Retailing (Jiangsu) Apparel Co., Ltd. in China.

In 2002, their first Chinese Uniqlo outlet was opened in Shanghai along with four overseas outlets in London, England.

3 UNIQLO

On 1 November 2005, Fast Retailing transferred the business related to clothing manufacturing and retailing to Sun Road Co., Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary that operated golf courses through a company split and became a holding company. On the same day, Sun Road changed its name to Uniqlo Co., Ltd. 2005 saw more overseas expansion, with stores opening in the United States (New York City), Hong Kong (Tsim Sha Tsui) and South Korea (Seoul), their South Korean expansion being part of a joint venture with Lotte.

As of year-end 2005, in addition to its overseas holdings, Uniqlo had around 700 stores within Japan. By 2006, sales were $4 billion. By April 2007, the company had set a global sales goal of $10 billion and a ranking among the top five global retailers, joining what at the time was Gap, H&M, Inditex and Limited Brands. Fast Retailing signed a design consulting contract for Uniqlo products

with fashion designer Jil Sander in March 2009. Shiatzy Chen was approached by Uniqlo to produce a capsule collection of ready-to-wear pieces to launch in November 2010, while Asia's largest Uniqlo store outside Japan opened its doors in Kuala Lumpur in the same month. In October 2018, Uniqlo collaborated with designer Alexander Wang to create a line of Heattech layerable basics including tank tops, leggings, underwear, and bodysuits.

On 3 June 2019, artist, and recent Dior Homme collaborator KAWS participed on KAWS x UNIQLO UT. "Perhaps because all the other collections were the subdued Uniqlo trademark, KAWS’s subversive art was able to stand out all the more."

LOGO EVOLUTION

1984 - 1991

The earliest design featured the original name of the brand, Unique Clothing Warehouse, in a dark, brownish shade of red, which appears like the red from the following version. The background was white or of a very light gray shade. The wordmark featured a clean sans serif type based on the square with rounded ends. The wordmark was either given within a single line or was broken down into three lines.

1991 - 1998

Here, the new company name in English is already used. It is placed inside a dark, wine-red box. The word was broken down into two parts. The lettering “UNI” formed the first line, while “QLO” was placed below.

1998 - 2009

2009 - NOW

According to the history of Uniqlo described on the official website, the company got a new logo in 1997. It was part of a set of strategies “borrowed” from the US brand The Gap. The strategies included updated merchandise, visual merchandising, and display, as well as store design, in addition to the new logo. The logo was developed by Richard Seireeni and Sy Chen of The Brand Architect Group’s Los Angeles office.

The current red-and-white logo was created in 2006 by Uniqlo’s lead designer, Kawashi Sato. The design emphasized the link to Japan using three approaches. First, the palette (red and white of the flag of Japan). Also, they added a logo featuring Katakana, one of four Japanese character sets. Katana is typically used for foreign words that have become part of the Japanese language.

the company made the new logo look even more like a Japanese ink seal, which also reinforced the link with Japan.

fact about uniqlo

The company name happened by accident

The name Uniqlo is unique, there is no denying this, but most people don’t know that the name of the businesses was originally intended to be Uniclo. It was a combination of the words unique and clothing and it was intended to describe the nature of the business. It was actually a clerical error that resulted in the name Uniqlo. When the company’s registration was sent in, a clerical error was made and although not the original name or spelling intended, it worked well and it stuck. The owners didn’t bother to correct the error, instead, they just went with it.

They go way beyond the basics

There is an erroneous belief circulating within the public about the kinds of clothing that Uniqlo provides. While it’s true that they do offer the basics including sweaters, shirts, and tees, there is much more to the retailer than this. They also offer a wide range of 100% cashmere sweaters, Down jackets and vests and some very fancy t-shirts made of hard to find materials. They’re not your average clothing retailer and it is the fine details that set them apart.

13 UNIQLO

Uniqlo originated decades ago in Japan

An interesting and fun fact about Uniqlo is that they opened their doors to the very first customers in 1949. They’ve been in business for well over half a century, yet not everyone in the world has heard about them yet. It could be in part because they are a Japanese company.

Uniqlo has some home-grown execs

Uniqlo is a company where employees have the opportunity for advancement if this is their desire. There are some executives in the company who started out working for them at the store level, and they worked hard and advanced with the company to become leaders. Some went from working on the sales floor to directors, regional managers of several of the stores in an area and even rose to executive positions within Uniqlo.
