A splashing good time

Rachel Branson PUBLISHER / EDITOR Is it just me or is the weather starting to make everyone feel grumpy? Road rage with a woman who thought I had pinched her parking space...Lost mobile phone, lost house keys and grumpy people inspired me to take refuge in by bathroom and indulge in a relaxing soak in my bath tub, something I only tend to do in the winter months... Candles lit, soft music playing, floating away to some island in the sun. It works wonders at washing away those dreary days, creating a haven of peace and tranquility. Enjoy & be inspired.

Victoria Branson FEATURES EDITOR It’s supposed to be July, blue sky and sunshine! Sadly the sky has been grey and instead of sunshine we’ve had rain and lots of it. Still one blessing is the hosepipe bans have been lifted. Grey seems to be a trending colour (all thanks to one author), so much so it inspired me to find some stylish grey products to fill your homes with. Don’t be afraid of using grey as many shades of grey can actually be quite warming and subtle, just perfect to create an environment where you just want to snuggle down and pick up a good book.

shades of grey

ave you indulged yourself into the 50 Shades of Grey? Unfortunately, neither Rachel or I have had the time yet to read this trilogy that appears to have become somewhat of a phenomenon and I'm only overhearing what my friends are saying about it, but clearly there seems to be something tantalising between the covers! All this chitta-chatta about shades of grey has inspired me to go in search of home interior products that fit within this trend. he E3 House is located in. a bustling neighbourhood near the very popular Jean-Talon Market in Montreal. It was designed for a family with a deep attachment to the neighbourhood, the parents' work in theatre, film and television, and the children are young adults. The exterior geometry of the residence is a simple parallelepiped defined by two largely fenestrated walls on the east and west sides and party walls to the north and south. The orientation of the lot inspired the design of a multi-level House that enables natural light to penetrate. The floors are staggered on Either Side of the 12-meter-high central atrium that divides into two volumes the house, front and back, a staircase, topped with a skylight, links the different Levels. The large windows situated at both ends of the house and the central skylight allow the sun to reach deep into the interior to create ever-changing plays of natural light and shadow. Malthus, the interior environment modulates According To the time of day and the season. Large wooden shutters slide in front of the windows in each room to filter the light at dawn and sunset. To ensure natural ventilation, the windows are facing and each other they all open, as do those in the skylight. The shutters protect the house from Aussi summer heat. The house is Called E3 because it is organized around the cross section of the building. The cross-sectional drawing resembles a capital E is backward linked to E by intersecting the staircase. Each living space and room is on a Separate level. The staircase links the six rooms in the house, ultimately leading to a mezzanine studio and a terrace with a view of iconic Mount Royal. On the Other Side, looks out the skylight was green roof system, where 'a small field of lavender will be planted. The bedrooms open onto the central space-through wide sliding doors pivoting gold, which expand the space, allow light to enter, and create a depth of perspective. When the doors are closed, the space is withdrawn, allowing for insulation, privacy, and contemplation. The volume is structured by integrated architectural elements and finishes contribute that has graphical and sculptural quality to the space. The central staircase, light and airy, and the impressive island kitchen both feature steel and walnut.

Cabinets, wardrobes and storage spaces, made with maple-veneer plywood, is vertically arranged to create multi-functional, multilevel monoliths. Outside, marine-grade plywood stained to a dark espresso colour lines the walls and ceilings of alcoves off to mark both front and back entrances. The project's program includes a code of materials with simple, repetitive colours: polished concrete, natural steel, wood and blue tiles. The interplay of these materials creates stunning graphical compositions that resemble abstract paintings. Trained in architecture and video art, Natalie Dionne opened in 2000. Her work has engaged sophisticated exploration of the links between art and architecture, film and interior design. Early in her career she worked with artists on the production and installation of public art. In 2008, she collaborated with her partner, Martin Laneville, House on the U (U House), an urban residence Focused inwards around interior courtyard that year accommodates both their family home and studio office. A bathroom should be a place for thought and reflection. A tranquil space in which to unwind and drift away. Bathrooms seem to have got smaller and smaller, almost an after thought, a space in which to squeeze a bath, toilet, basin and if you’re luck a shower as well. I do most of my thinking in the shower and my most creative time is while lounging in a bath, candles lit, music playing. I aspire to build my own house with a space big enough to install the most creative of bath tubs or perhaps have the luxury of turning a bedroom over to a a huge luxurious space. Over the last few months we have uncovered some truely inspiring bath tubs, so we hope you enjoy a selection of our favourite tubs. The Swiss company Bagno Sasso sets trends and creates new ideas for fantastic spa moments. Their bathtubs have a very architectural feel and set eye-catching trends in modern bathrooms. With unique forms, textures and materials Bagno Sasso creates a new world in the bathroom. Together with the German designer Manuel Dreesmann, Bagno Sasso developed two eye-catching bathtub models ‘Ocean Wing’ (main picture) and ‘Ocean Wave’. “Design is our passion and creating new sensational bathroom trends is our challenge. The new bathtubs are characterised by modern and stylish elements and fit perfectly into the bath lounge”, says Rolf Senti, owner & CEO, Bagno Sasso.

CERAMICA FLAMINIA The new Leggera bathtub from Ceramica Flaminia is a designed by Gilda Borgnini. A stainless steel shower pole pierces through the porcelain effortlessly, as if it were indeed cloth. The outside and inside of the bathtub are less marked, melting into one another with a sensation of airy relaxation.

I came across a stunning bath from Indigenous Tiles at a recent exhibition. Riverstone (pictured above) is sourced straight from the riverbed, the Riverstone Collection includes a selection of stunning bathtubs, bowls and pedestal basins. Basalt boulders, originating from the active Marapi volcano in Central Java, are washed down the river during the rainy season, by torrents of water, before becoming lodged downstream. The boulders are then collected and crafted by hand. Polished to give an internal smooth finish, the Riverstones boulders are chosen to complement each other and share a fluid bowl design and rich, earthy tone. Each piece is completely unique. Riverstones can be used throughout the bathroom or chosen individually as statement pieces - their distinctive natural look suiting both contemporary and traditional interiors.

(left) Another of their ranges is Travertine, inspired by sleek, contemporary lines, combined

with solid, traditional travertine, this collection is always popular, especially with the current trend for mixing old and new pieces in bathrooms. It includes basins, baths and shower trays, which are crafted from single solid pieces of honed and filled ivory travertine. All pieces are offered in a variety of shapes and sizes, with bespoke commissions designed to individual requirements also available.

(above right) The Modernus Collection (Image supplied by Pibamarmi) is more than a bathroom range; it is a concept in bathroom design. Produced in Italy, and using only their finest limestone and marble, it provides you with a rare opportunity to approach your bathroom as a homogenous space, where you can dictate

the design and layout of your bath, basin and shower. You can then further enhance these pieces by choosing complementing stone for the walls and floors. If your’re looking for something truly different, there is very little comparable to Modernus currently available in the UK. Minimalist style combined with sleek lines, Modernus is the ultimate in bespoke and boutique contemporary chic. www.

bath time

s it just me or is the weather starting to make everyone feel grumpy? Road rage with a woman who thought I had pinched her parking space... Lost mobile phone, lost house keys and grumpy people inspired me to take refuge in by bathroom and indulge in a relaxing soak in my bath tub, something I only tend to do in the winter months... Candles lit, soft music playing, floating away to some island in the sun. It works wonders at washing away those dreary thoughts, creating a haven of peace and tranquility. I must admit I first need to declutter the bathroom of rubber ducks and floating bath toys, but the effort of creating a sensual space is worth it, and not just for us women, I think the men should give it a try as well. Now relaxed by my bath time treat, I have been inspired to uncovered some truly inspiring bath tubs, so have a look at our unusual bath tubs feature, however if space is limited and funds are depleted I have also found some lovely fragrances and luxurious bath towels that should transform even the smallest of bathrooms into your own personal spa. So what ever the weather or your mood take a little time to transform your bathroom and soak away those grey, rainy summer days. Fill your bathtub, close the door, tight some candles, play soft music and drift away which you wash the stresses and strains of the day. If you are lacking

inspiration then we hope our selection of scents, towels, candles and music systems help you to transform your bathroom into a personal spa! The double wick ensures an even burn and excellent transfer of fragrance. My personal favourite is Neom Fragrances, I came across their range a few months ago and fell in love their Moroccan Blush Rose range, their diffusing oils and candles are heavenly and well worth the investment in creating a home of beautiful fragrances. A beautiful glass bottle holds the precious scentdiffusing oil made using only the highest quality blend of pure essential oils rather than synthetic fragrances. ew build homes have undergone an architectural evolution in the last thirty years due to a fundamental shift in consumer demand. Separate reception rooms once epitomised sophisticated living, and layouts were structured around areas specifically designated as kitchens, living or dining rooms. Upstairs, floor plans were designed to include as many bedrooms and bathrooms as possible, with en suites regarded as the height of luxury. Mark Watson, Head of Technical Design for Berkeley (Eastern Counties) Ltd, explains: “Such traditional architectural styles have been transformed in the last decade to reflect the demand for more flexible living accommodation.

~ Such traditional architectural styles have been transformed in the last decade to reflect the demand for more flexible living accommodation.

“In order to maximise space and light, astute house hunters now favour open plan living where the ground floor accommodation, such as the kitchen, living room and dining room, effortlessly combine. “Feedback has also shown that new home buyers are now prepared to sacrifice an extra en suite in return for a dedicated dressing area – a feature that was traditionally considered the exclusive preserve of the more affluent purchaser. This transition in requirements

reflects how comfort and spaciousness are no longer aspirations, but prerequisites, for contemporary living.” With the property ladder so difficult to climb for many nowadays, first homes need to evolve to become family homes, meaning living areas are required to adapt to reflect the lifestyle demands that children bring. “We have found that townhouse style properties are often the best solution to help maximise the land available for new build developments. Their design

reflects the requirement for more than one reception room and a maximum number of bedrooms. Townhouse style homes are proving very popular with couples and families alike. Some styles now incorporate a nursery room on the same level as the master bedroom suite, meaning that younger children can sleep within easy proximity of their parents, and then move onto a different floor as they become teenagers and want space from their parents.

In essence, this enables families to grow into their homes, and for the homes to adapt to differing family needs. Living accommodation benefits in a similar manner as it is divided across the ground and first floors, enabling families to have an open plan family space on the ground floor, with a more formal ‘adult’ living room upstairs. In order to maximise the space, light and outdoor areas, some new build homes in Kent now incorporate

a variety of architectural designs. First floor private terraces and balconies are now being included in both apartment and house designs. Bi-fold doors are becoming standard feature in downstairs living areas and open directly onto a paved area in the garden, maximising ‘outdoor living’, creating the feeling of bringing the outside space indoors.

Some modern town house designs even include an extended ground floor to create a greater downstairs living area. These designs feature a galleried ceiling with Velux windows, flooding the lounge with natural light.  “Irrespective of budget, house buyers repeatedly place flexible living, open plan layouts, space and light at the top of their list of what they look for in a new property. Open plan designs undoubtedly lend themselves most

successfully to flexible living, and mean that the same property can be as successfully occupied by a single occupier as a couple who are starting a family. Whilst features such as dressing rooms, outside space, and garden rooms were once seen as bonuses, they are increasingly becoming the norm. Purchasers of today’s new build properties can rest assured they are making a sound investment for their future,” Mark concludes.

The development has 1 and 2 bedroom apartments available from 134,950, 4 bedroom houses from £249,950, and 5 bedroom houses available from £419,950 Kingsbrook Park, Canterbury, has 1, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments available from £164,950 Ryewood, Sevenoaks, has one and two bedroom apartments available from £186,950, and three and four bedroom houses available from £314,950.
