ays Consolidated Independent School District (Hays CISD) is a proud partner of the City of Kyle and its surrounding communities in serving more than 19,000 students at 23 campuses. Even with continued growth, the school district offers a world-class education with a friendly, small-town feel. Hays CISD features a state-ofthe-art Performing Arts Center; a dual-language magnet program at two elementary campuses; a science/technology/engineering/ math (STEM) magnet program at two elementary schools; and Project Lead the Way designation at both of the comprehensive high schools. Students can choose from a wide range of Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses designed to provide them with the skills needed to enter today’s workforce. We provide students with rigorous and relevant instruction to help them succeed in our high-demand, high-skilled working environment of the 21st century. Examples of some of the courses include culinary arts, cosmetology, horticulture, graphic design, welding, engineering, robotics, and health sciences. In addition to providing students a rigorous academic curriculum, Hays CISD recognizes the value of extracurricular activities to enrich the student experience, providing opportunities to participate in the awardwinning band, choir, visual and performing arts, and athletic programs. Additionally, afterschool clubs are hosted at each campus with offerings as varied as students’ interests. Austin Community College (ACC) Hays Campus offers 235 degree/certificate options, over 100 workforce education Page 10 u Kyle, TX 2017
degrees, and 90 workforce certificates. ACC’s presence in Kyle extends learning for students with its flexible class schedules and affordable indistrict tuition. In partnership with CommuniCare, Hays CISD features a district WELL Clinic, a 3,700 square foot facility that serves nearly 7,000 students annually. The clinic recently expanded its hours to better accommodate family schedules and now serves both privately insured and uninsured students and siblings. The clinic also provides behavioral health services. The WELL Clinic helps keep students in school and reaching their full potential. Looking ahead, Hays CISD is excited about discussions underway for High School # 3. The district has empaneled the Growth Impact Committee to explore options for a bond to put before voters in 2017 which would include a third high school and possibly a couple of new elementary schools to keep
pace with the growth. Also, the district is currently engaging stakeholders as it develops the new strategic plan to serve as the blueprint for the future of learning and teaching in Hays CISD. All of these successes are built upon a solid foundation of community support dating back over 100 years. Career & Technical Education Since 2013, the Career & Technical Education (CTE) programs in the Hays CISD have grown by leaps and bounds, going from providing 11 CTE certifications, to offering more than 1,900 certifications. A $13.1 million bond proposal that would increase CTE resources, will be up for vote in May of 2017. That bond
would allocate nearly half of that money into courses offered at Lehman High School in Kyle. So whether your student is interested in veterinary medicine, culinary arts, welding, or any of the other 1,900-plus programs, Lehman and Hays high schools are prepared to help your child succeed in the workplace of their choice.

Sports
In October of 2016, Kyle began a new era of semiprofessional sports with the season kickoff of the Central Texas Lobos soccer team. Since then the city has also acquired a new American Basketball Association franchise – the Kyle Stallions. The topic of bringing semipro sports to the city arose in 2015 when the city, under the leadership of City Manager Scott Sellers, began making “a concerted emphasis on bringing sports leagues to Kyle” as a way to provide destination activities for residents. “We recognize that all sports represent a draw to the city, provide opportunities to citizens for recreation and gives us an identity we have all been searching for,” Sellers said.

Top Attractions Katherine Anne Porter Literary Center
Claiborne Kyle Log House Where it all began The double pen, dogtrot log home Lucy Bugg and Claiborne Kyle built on a bluff, overlooking the Blanco River in Hays County, still stands where it was constructed in 1850. It was built of cedar logs, hand dressed by adze, square notched at the corners and secured by wooden pegs. It may be the only remaining example of a double pen, linear dogtrot log home on it original location in Texas, probably the South. “It (Kyle log house) continues an architectural style begun in Massachusetts and Virginia, brought through Kentucky and Tennessee to Texas during the westward movement of the 19th century,” stated Eric S.
McCready in a letter to Curtis Tunnell, acting director, National Register Program of the Texas Historical Foundation. Claiborne and Lucy lived there with eight of their own children and one adopted son after their move from Tennessee. Claiborne Kyle log house is open from spring until fall beginning with Blooms over the Blanco open house celebration which signals each year the open house season and held on the first Sunday after Easter each year. The log house is open the first Sunday of each month after Blooms over the Blanco from 2 to 5 pm. Commission members are on hand
to answer any questions and lead informal tours. Open house season closes with the Claiborne Kyle Fried Chicken Dinner festivities held the fourth Saturday in September. The log house is also open for special tours for schools or individuals simply by calling 512-826-8436. To reach the log house, take the Kyle Exit from IH 35 and travel west through town on Center Street. Turn left onto Old Stagecoach Road (County Road 136) and drive south to 2400 Old Stagecoach Road. Enter the gate and continue down the gravel road. There is plenty of parking beside the house.
Kyle Railroad Depot and Heritage Center The city of Kyle was founded in 1880 by nearby settlers from the communities of Blanco and Mountain City. Fergus Kyle, for whom the town was named, and the family of David Moore donated 200 acres of land for a town site when the International and Great Northern Railroad built a line from Austin to San Antonio as well as the Kyle Train Depot that sits on Front and Center streets, next to the new Kyle City Hall. The Kyle Railroad Depot and Heritage Center is open 1-5 p.m. every Sunday and on Saturdays when the Kyle Market Days is taking place. Page 14 u Kyle, TX 2017
Shortly after Kyle, Texas was founded in 1880, Katherine Anne Porter’s paternal grandmother built a three-room house on Center Street. Following his wife’s death in 1892, Porter’s father and his four children moved into the house where Katherine Anne Porter, born in 1890, lived until 1902. Katherine Anne Porter was a Pulitzer Prize-winning American journalist, essayist, short story writer, novelist, and political activist. Her 1962 novel “Ship of Fools” was the best-selling novel in America that year, but her short stories received much more critical acclaim. In 2002 the house was designated a National Literary Landmark. In 2006 the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Currently, Texas State University leases the home to house various resident writers who keep up with the house and host literary events.
Steeplechase Park Steeplechase Park contains 31 acres of open spaces with the picturesque Plum Creek running through the heart of it and is located on Lehman Road, just south of Lehman High School and north of PAWS Animal Shelter. Steeplechase Park has several access points from the north and south of Plum Creek. Park amenities include covered pavilion, playscapes, trails, baseball and football fields, basketball and sand volleyball courts as well as a championship disc golf course.
Lake Kyle Lake Kyle is located at 700 Lehman Road, about a mile south of Bunton Road (Lehman High School) and about half a mile north of FM 150 (PAWS Animal Shelter & Kyle Public Works). The park is on the east side of Lehman Road. The park offers fishing, playscapes, walking trails and the occasional Movie in the Park. The park is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. plus extended office hours as scheduled and posted.

Kyle business owner finalist in statewide competition by Moses Leos III
G
rowing up on a 50-acre farm in Splendora, Julie Albertson was taught to bake with whatever was available. That’s where she also learned that baking from scratch not only helped with stress, but also helped others smile. Albertson, co-owner of Texas Pie Company in Kyle, is bringing smiles to households across Texas, as her idea of a raw, frozen pie dough puck won the H-E-B’s Quest for Texas Best contest. Competition for her product to go on H-E-B store shelves was not only a humbling experience for Albertson, but also a chance to represent Kyle. “It’s a sense of pride, honor and privilege and that a small town girl does well,” Albertson said. Her path toward the competition began when she saw an advertisement for it at H-E-B. Once she read up on the rules, Albertson began the process of penning a 1,000word essay on her history as a baker and her business. It was an experience she said was “cathartic.” She was then notified in April 2016 by H-E-B that out of roughly 400 submissions, her idea was on to the next round. Albertson said she was very glad to have the acknowledgement of an idea “they had never seen before.” Her idea, which she had researched over a two-year period, is a 10-ounce raw, frozen pre-made pie dough puck. “When I got the first call, I put down the telephone and did the Snoopy dance,” Albertson said. “They have never seen what I’m offering. to H-E-B in May, which included pie dough in the
package, along with pecan and apple lattice pie, as well as quiche and chicken-pot pie. In June she heard back from H-E-B that she had made it to the next round. By the time she got the call, Albertson feared she was out of the running. In August, Albertson participated in the final round of competition, where she presented her pie dough puck to a panel of judges at the Houston Food Bank. Four winners were selected – based on quality, marketability and readiness for production, according to a release. Albertson said she and her company have met with a co-packer recommended to them out of Lockhart that could help manage distribution and management with H-E-B. She said Texas Pie Company currently makes 4,000 pies per month. “It’s a very exciting and eye opening experience,” Albertson said. Albertson was confident her product would perform well, due to its uniqueness. She was also confident in her ability to “know her stuff” for her presentation, ranging from baking, to her business background, both in retail and in wholesale. “I’ve been baking for 30 years. This is not something that I’ve made up. As I began to love myself, I freed myself of anything that is no good for my health - food, people, things, situations and everything that drew me down and away from myself. At first I called this attitude a healthy egoism. Today, I know it is Love of Oneself. As I began to love myself, I quit trying to always be right, and ever since, I was wrong less of the time. Today, I discovered that is Modesty. As I began to love myself, I refused to go on living in the past and worry about the future. Now, I only live for the moment, where Everything is happening. Today, I live each day, day by day, and I call it Fulfilment. As I began to love myself, I recognized that my mind can disturb me and it can make me sick. But, as I connected it to my heart, my mind became a valuable ally. Today, I call this connection Wisdom of the Heart. We no longer need to fear arguments, confrontations or any kind of problems with ourselves or others. Even stars collide, and out of their crashing new worlds are born. Today, I know... That Is Life.
