Dear Haymount Family, Beginning September 12 we'll be moving to a new schedule on Sunday mornings. The Contemporary Service will move to 9:00 am, Sunday School will be at 10:00, and the Traditional Service will remain at 11:00. Unfortunately, we will be letting go of the 8:30 Traditional Service. This request was brought to the Church Council by two independent sub-committees and unanimously approved by the Council at its August 4th meeting. This will make it possible for everyone to attend either style worship service and still be able to attend Sunday school. Existing Sunday School classes are free to set their own schedules. Two new adult Sunday school classes are forming. One is a 20s-30s young adult class with about 20 people signed up for the class. Taylor Whitley is class president, Daniel Hurley is communications chair, and Dr. John has been invited to teach. Another new adult class may be forming as well. These are going to be a lot of fun! We have many Sunday School offerings, and now might be the perfect time to join. Some of our most cherished members will be very disappointed that we are letting go of our 8:30 Traditional Service, and the Council has struggled with this for many years. The reality is that with approximately half our attendance online now, we simply don’t have enough in-person attenders to support an 8:30 Traditional Service. So we gently encourage our 8:30 folks to consider joining one of the other two services. As we draw closer to September 12, please pray and see how the Lord Jesus is leading you to participate. September Sermon Series As we say goodbye to summer and begin a new season, we hear the voice of Jesus calling us to bring healing, strength, joy, and light to others. Sometimes we do this unconsciously, and that is glorious! Sometimes we do this quite intentionally, guided by the Holy Spirit. Wednesday Evening Fellowship is Back! PUT SEPTEMBER 15 ON YOUR CALENDAR NOW! COME ENJOY SAMMIO’S SPAGHETTI WITH MEAT SAUCE OR MARINA OR GLUTEN FREE PIZZA WITH SALAD AND BREADSTICKS AND IT’S FREE FOR ALL ATTENDING! After that, meals will be free for children 11 and younger and $5.00 for everyone else. We will serve meals from 5:15 – 6:15 pm. Reservations must be made by September 7th through the link on the church website or the e-update or by calling the church office. (Be sure to indicate the number of adults and number of children and whether each is for marinara, meat sauce, or gluten-free pizza). Due to Covid concerns, our plan is always subject to change, but at this point, all team members will wear a mask and gloves while working. We will be serving from the kitchen service line. Utensils will be prewrapped in a napkin for each person. Tables will be spread out across the New Life Center with 4 chairs per table. Larger families are welcome to pull up an extra chair and singles or couples are welcome to sit with others. All members will wear a mask while entering, going through the line and fixing their drink, then remove their mask as they reach their table. Join a Group Do you want to get connected? Then join a group! There are many ways for everyone at the church to get connected through discipleship. Here are some ways you can do so: Sunday School Classes - on Sunday, September 12th at 10am we will have an Adult Sunday School Open House in the New Life Center following the 9am worship service. If you are not already in a class, come on over and check out what you are missing. There will be many people there to greet you and invite you into a class. Two new classes are forming this year A Young Adult Class for those in their 20s and 30s. They will meet together for the first time at the Open House on September 12th in the New Life Center, and will then begin meeting as a class on the 19th in Room 222. Dr. John will teach that class for a few months. Another new adult class is forming, so if you want to join in and begin your faith journey together with others just starting out in a group, then this is your chance. This group will meet in Room 212 beginning September 19th. Why not come and meet others at the Open House on September 12th? Book Club - do you love to read? Then this is a group for you! Led by Paige McMillan, this group chooses its books together, and then takes time to discuss the readings. Sometimes field trips are involved! Contact Paige McMillan if you are interested in this group: mackpaige88@gmail.com The Grandma Group - This group, led by Brenda Booth, meets weekly for fellowship, and also to journey together through the 21st century landscape of grandparenting. They meet on Tuesday mornings, 10am-12n in Room 224. Small Groups - Currently, there are two small groups forming. These small groups will meet in homes or coffee houses either weekly or bi-weekly, and will enjoy fellowship and study of the scriptures together. To date we have three small groups forming. Understanding One Another in Love Not everyone who loves God and their neighbor thinks the same about homosexuality. Some good people are on the right, some on the left, and some in the center. One purpose of this class is to help all of us come together in understanding and accepting each other. Another purpose is to look honestly at what the New Testament says about LGBT+ people. We will meet together in the Fellowship Hall on Wednesday evenings from 6:15-7:15 from September 15 - November 17 to examine scripture together and listen to another’s views, stories and experiences. This will be a relaxed time of learning, sharing, and bonding for all of us. I hope you will join us.

For 4s/Pre-K/Kinder., Room 133, 1st – 5th Graders, Room 208, Focus: Discipleship through Bible study. 11:15-12:00 - Kids Worship A time for the children to worship God through music, prayer, games and crafts and learning stories of the Bible that teach how to live as a follower of Jesus today. Designed for kids ages 4-3rd grade to prepare them to participate in worship with their parents. The older children lead the Kids Worship services. Room 101. Focus: Worship through participation. 4:45-5:30 – Kingdom Kids - Kids Praising God through music and worship arts. A time for the children to enjoy Christian fellowship and learn how to live as a Christian child in today’s world through topical lessons. Heavy emphasis on outreach and mission. This group goes on monthly trips or campouts/sleepovers at the church. For ages Kindergarten-Fifth Grade. Room 101, Focus: Christian Fellowship and Christian Living. Easy entry point. Wednesdays 6:15-7:00 – God’s Whispers – Kids glorifying God through liturgical movement. A time for children to enjoy music through movement, and occasionally dance in worship services. For 1st - 5th Graders. Room 231 Focus: Worship and Praise through participation. 6:15-7:15 – KidMo Group – Kids learning scriptures and lessons from the Bible through games, crafts and other fun activities. The kids will enjoy active games that reinforce the Bible teachings for the evening. For First-5th Graders. Room 208. Focus: Scripture Learning and Christian Living.
Day Camp What a "TIME" we had in God's place! The kids and youth had fabulous days in beautiful Camp Rockfish at the Haymount UMC Nature Day Camp. Not only did they go mud-diving (some deeper than others!) and creek floating, but they also roasted their hotdogs and marshmallows the ol' fashioned way - over a campfire. The daily devotional theme for the week was "God's Time", and the kids and youth were challenged to remember that time is not ours, but God's, and with that we are called to be good stewards of it. Big Eagle Scout Ceremony for Eleven of HUMC's Troop 740 On Sunday, August 3rd, eleven of our troop's scouts received their Rank of Eagle. This was a historical event for Haymount UMC that so many scouts earned this high honor and celebrated together, and the first time that a young lady from our Girl BSA Troop 740 was a recipient of this high rank. Mark Your Calendars Many of the youth have begun their classes for the 2021-2022 school year, and sports and clubs are starting to gear up. How exciting it is that school has returned! As we look toward everything that the school year has to offer, we also are looking at what the Haymount Youth Ministry can do to make a difference in the church and the community. One of the exciting announcements to make is our upcoming mission activities! We will participate in a mission activity each month, all leading up to a 2022 summer mission trip! Our youth activities for September: September 12 – First School Year ECHO (5:30-7:00) Dinner will be provided. We will then meet every Sunday. Wednesdays starting September 15 – Youth and their families will have a discussion table at Dr. John’s WEF class (6:15-7:15). Please join for the meal beforehand and enjoy some fellowship with the whole church! Make sure you make a reservation for the meal ahead of time. September 26 – Youth Mission Night (5:30-7:00). Come and pack some appreciation bags for the teachers at Terry Sanford High School. We’ll also have plenty of games to go along with our time of outreach! The Village Water Project is Completed Dear Partners and Friends, I am overjoyed to share with you some great news! THE PROJECT IS COMPLETE! We have finalized all work on the project, passed the government inspection on the quality of the work done, and THERE IS CLEAN WATER IN MY VILLAGE AND TWO OTHER NEIGHBORING VILLAGES! I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you from the bottom of my heart, for your contributions in all your different capacities. There is an African proverb that says, “It takes a village to raise one kid.” Thank you for being valuable members of that village for me. I know that I speak on behalf of all 4,091 people that live in these three villages when I say thank you and pray for your continued blessings. I teared up a little when I saw pictures and videos of running water in my village. When I remember the struggles of just getting water while growing up there, and knowing that now there is clean, easily accessible water in the center of the villages, it is still hard to believe. This is just the beginning! All your compassion to make positive changes all over the world, and all our hopes to leave the world a better place than we found it, has inspired me to work hard and do more life-changing projects. Working on this project has been the greatest honor of my life! At times, it was a very educational and rewarding experience; other times it was challenging. The challenges I faced during the implementation opened my eyes to how the world outside of school works. There is so much to say about this experience, and I hope one day to write about it. I am very grateful to Haymount United Methodist Church, St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church, Davis Peace Projects, and every single person that contributed their funds to this noble cause. I pray that God refills your pockets and accounts hundredfold. My God is the Lord of His word, and He says in Proverbs 19:17, “Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed.” I know God has blessed me in so many ways, but the most important one to me is that he has chosen to bless my village and community through you and me. College Student Ministry Are you a college student, or are you the parent or grandparent of a college student? Then we want information! Please provide the name, email address and physical address so that you, as a student, or your child/grandchild can receive tokens of love from the church family. Our Higher Ed Coordinator, Ashley Taylor, is so faithful to send out text devotionals, and mails cards with goodies in them during exam times. The students can receive the church newsletter while they are away via email, and they will be in the loop when we have holiday or special gatherings for our college kids. Stephen Ministry As one of the longest serving male Stephen Ministers, I hope I have made my earthly father in heaven (a United Methodist minister) proud that I did enter the ministry, even though unsalaried! But most importantly, I hope my Heavenly Father occasionally has a smile on His face at my efforts to provide care while He provides the cure. Us (We?) guys have a tendency to play the macho role and go it alone when facing life's stressors, but I believe the confidential listening skills of a trained Stephen Minister will often set the stage for the Holy Spirit to work wonders in a life that is often filled with ups and downs. Our Stephen Ministry training allows us to step outside the difficulties of our own lives and be God's hands and feet for our care receivers. I am grateful for this opportunity to serve and urge anyone who has the feeling he or she might benefit from a confidential friend to inquire into the Stephen Ministry. And if you have been hearing that still small voice urging you to help care for God's people, become a Stephen Minister, I promise God will bless your efforts! - John Phillips
Musical Notes Dear Haymount UMC Family, It is the moment that we have been waiting for – our beautiful Möller/Lewtak pipe organ will be dedicated on Sunday, September 12th at the 11:00am service. The following is an abbreviated history of our pipe organ. After ten years of research by the organ search committee, the organ purchase committee signed a contract with the M.P. Möller Company in January 1974. In May 1975, the M.P. Möller, Opus 11011 organ was installed at HUMC. Judy Aycock, organist, performed a recital on February 29, 1976, to celebrate the installation of the organ. Paul Tamblyn, professor at Fayetteville State University performed the dedicatory recital on September 11, 1977. In 1993, the Mid-Atlantic Organ Company submitted a proposal for the addition of the prepared stops from the 1975 installation. The company completed the work in June 1995. In preparation for the 75th anniversary of HUMC in 2020, a new organ committee received proposals for a complete renovation of the organ. The organ committee is comprised of Brenda Booth (chair), Carol Briggs, Lynda Clark, Peter Stewart, Dr. John Tyson, Rev. Donald Warren, Rev. Woody Wells, Dr. Elizabeth Tyson, Andrew Sanchez, and Monica Sparzak. Timothy Belk and Terry Eason served as consultants for the renovation, and Lewtak Pipe Organ Builders was chosen to complete the renovation. Additionally, the congregation commissioned a new horizontal trumpet called the Trompette de Gabriel. The Lewtak organ renovation was completed in August 2021. My sincerest thanks to Dr. John Tyson, the organ committee, the staff, and the congregation for their unfailing support of this renovation. I pray this pipe organ will provide many years of service to the glory of God.

Words From Andrew Dear Friends, It has been one month since the installation of our new sound and video equipment in the New Life Center. As excited as we have been, with new equipment comes new sets of problems and we have been working diligently to get used to our new equipment. This new equipment is giving us many more possibilities with our sound and how we present it to the in-person and online congregation. God has big plans for the contemporary service at Haymount UMC and this is only the beginning. Please continue to pray for your church leaders as we make decisions and continue to glorify God’s name. New equipment also means new opportunities for volunteerism. The new equipment we have is very user friendly and exciting to use. This would be a great opportunity for anyone interested in the ‘behind the scenes’ of the worship service. This is also a great opportunity for any youth to be more involved in the life of the church, as well as learn new skills that will benefit them for the rest of their lives. Changes to Upcoming Conference Gatherings by The North Carolina Conference of The United Methodist Church
As we continue to monitor the COVID-19 trends, including increases in cases and hospitalizations, and out of a desire to “do no harm” as we look ahead to opportunities to gather across our connection, the Cabinet and Conference Leadership have made the following changes to upcoming events. Bishop Fairley’s Welcome Service and District Gatherings Welcome Service The September 19 Service of Welcome for Bishop Leonard Fairley and his wife Dawn has been canceled. In its place, Bishop Fairley will deliver a message to the Conference. As the details for this are finalized, we will share that information and an invitation with you. District Gatherings The in-person District Gatherings with Bishop Fairley will now take place via Zoom. The schedule for the gatherings remains the same. Look for more information on how to join the Zoom meetings (by computer, mobile device, or phone) soon. Charge Conferences This year’s Charge Conference sessions will be virtual. The Cabinet and AADSs are finalizing the details and will share the information with you as soon as possible. Thank you for your flexibility and your patience with these changes. We base these decisions on a commitment to keep one another safe and seek the health and well-being of all involved. While we will certainly miss the opportunity to be physically present with one another at these meetings, we look forward to a time when we can once again be gathered together in our sacred spaces. We continue praying for all who bring healing and wholeness to our world, those who give care to the sick, and those affected by COVID-19.

Operation Inasmuch - Ray's Run: September 1-30, 2021 Ray's Run is in loving memory of one of OIAM's former Executive Directors, Ray Helton. COL (Ret) Emory “Ray” Helton, 66, finished his race on September 2, 2019, after an arduous battle with pancreatic cancer. As an avid runner, Ray ran many marathons, including the Boston Marathon, and founded the Marathon Training Group with the Fayetteville Running Club. In 2014, Ray started volunteering at Operation Inasmuch, and then upon retiring from the Army he became the Executive Director. During the time Ray served at Fayetteville Area Operation Inasmuch, he saw the ministry expand to include a men’s transitional facility -- “The Lodge”. It was his greatest joy to share his faith and to see lives transformed as he partnered with the people and the ministry of FAOIAM.
