March 6 Finding Your Place Luke 4:1-13 Finding one’s place in life is difficult for most everyone. And the surprising thing is we keep having to find our place over and over as our situation and life stage change. It was difficult for Jesus, too, as we see in today’s Gospel Lesson. Partly, it gives us comfort to know that even Jesus had a struggle with this, and partly, we can gain some insight from him on how to handle it. March 13 Jesus Didn’t Do It Alone Luke 9:28-36 Like industrious folks everywhere, Americans love the idea of self-reliance. Certainly, there are things that we must do alone and standing on our own two feet, but great accomplishments usually happen through a network of support from others. We see that in this important moment in Jesus’ life. March 20 The Deuteronomistic Worldview Revisited Luke 13:1-9 The Deuteronomistic worldview in the Old Testament is that God punishes sin and rewards righteousness. This idea is carried a bit further in the idea that if bad things happen to a person they must have “had it coming” in one way or another. Jesus answers this question. March 27 The Power of Asking For What You Want Luke 15:1-3, 11b-32 Many of us are familiar with the parable of the Prodigal Son, which is today’s lesson. The primary characters in this story are the younger son who is in many ways unwise, the older son who is resentful of both his younger brother and his father, and the father who loves his boys with a God-sized love. What can we learn from Jesus as we hear his story about these three men?

Youth News

The youth had a busy February with a game night, a trip to DEFY, a movie night, our first annual Valen-dines meal, in addition to our regular Sunday School and youth group events! We learned about finding ourselves at the table with Christ in the midst of our difficult moments, not to sit at tables Jesus would flip, and the importance of building longer tables for those around us who need to know God’s love just as much as we do. We also encouraged the youth to attend the Haymount Carnival. In March, we will have our regularly scheduled youth activities, and a Family Game Night on the 18th. I’m excited for what will come this month! Do You Have a Sweet Tooth? The United Methodist Women (UMW) can "sweeten" that!!! They will be selling $1.00 bags of cookies, brownies, cake slices, lemon bars, etc., Friday, March 4, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm and Saturday, March 5, 8:30 am - 1:00 pm at the Garage Sale in the old Fellowship Hall. All proceeds go to help women, children, and youth locally and worldwide. Support this "sweet" effort by buying bags of sweets for $1.00 per bag!!! YOU ARE INVITED to be the hands and feet of Jesus.
Haymount Endowment Program in Action “Supporting our Church Now and Forever” The Endowment Committee would like to remind staff and church members that applications for disbursements from our endowment funds for the Spring Cycle are due April 15. The following funds offer disbursements by application: Applications due April 15 for the Spring Cycle: *Marlin Stewart Fund - for camp scholarships, preschool/daycare scholarships and needs of underprivileged children. *Nellie Smith Arts Fund - for worship arts and art education. *Dayton A. Dawson Fund - for needs of underprivileged children. Applications due August 15 for the Fall Cycle: *Mary Evelyn Cross Hayes Fund for HUMC - for UMW programs, children and youth programs and the sanctuary flower fund. *Senior Adult Ministries Fund - for a comprehensive older adult ministry at HUMC. Ministry components include: spiritual, enrichment, nutrition, intergenerational, outreach, recreation and service. Please contact the Finance Office for any questions and the application form. The application form will also be posted on the church website soon. To be a Stephen Minister... I have been asked to share some things about my experience as a Stephen Minister and the training that I am presently receiving to become a Stephen Leader. First, I need to tell you why I decided to become a Stephen Minister in the first place. In 1993, when my mother passed away and Eric’s father passed away in the same week, I really struggled. It was difficult to find anyone to talk to and share my feelings with because everyone in my family was grieving in their own way. There just didn’t seem to be very many people who knew how to listen without offering platitudes. I could really have used a Stephen Minister at that time. Later on, I wondered how I could use my own experience in some beneficial way. It took several years and a lot of prayer to decide to train to become a Stephen Minister (with some nudging from Paige McMillan) My first care receiver was an elderly lady. I was nervous about that first meeting, but Jesus was with me. She and I connected and eventually became close friends. We maintained this relationship even after our official Care-giver/Care-receiver relationship ended. It was a blessing for both of us. I am in a different Caregiving relationship now. It is a totally different situation, but just as rewarding. We minister to people who are hurting in different ways. We don’t know who each Stephen Minister is connected with but the reasons are quite varied. (Continued on Page 10, under the Music Notes article)

Cumberland Road Elementary School Program Update Covid may keep us out of the classroom, but our support and commitment to our partnership with Cumberland Road Elementary School is still going strong! Over the past two years our CRESP committee members have been unable to tutor in classrooms or mentor through lunch visits. However, we have continued to work with the school and offered support when needed. If you are interested in donating items to the school or joining our team volunteering in the school when allowed, please email Mandy Brown for more information: mandybrown20@gmail.com In the Fall of 2020, when students were home learning virtually, our CRESP committee offered treats to teachers by collecting snacks for a staff snack cart. We dropped off salty and sweet snacks and waters for teachers to enjoy and help get them through the long days of virtual teaching! Last May, our CRESP committee collected desserts and Riverbark Veterinary Hospital donated Sammio's spaghetti lunch to the Cumberland Road Staff for a well-earned end of the year lunch celebration. Our church generously adopted 7 students and helped make their Christmas special! Our church family donated winter items and bookbags to help CRESP students in need. Thanks to a generous end of the year donation from our Mission budget, we were able to purchase much needed items for Cumberland Road students! Covid has caused an even greater need for students and we were so grateful to be able to help them start the new year with these needed items. New clothes, bookbags, wipes, coats, socks, soap, and other basic supplies! Last, thanks to a donation from The Grange, we were able to purchase mops for classrooms. Students are required to eat lunch in the classrooms due to Covid and the teachers needed cleaning supplies to help clean up after. We were also able to purchase shoes in a variety of sizes to give to students in need!

CRESP Part 2 Dayton Dawson Endowment Gift Provides Books for Cumberland Road Elementary Students
Last May, we were able to purchase and give each student at Cumberland Road Elementary, a book on their level to enjoy over the summer. Studies show that students lose reading skills over the summer. By giving each child their own book, we hope we were are able to make a difference, encourage a love for reading and let each student know that their friends at Haymount UMC care about them! The purchase of 302 books from Scholastic was made possible by a very generous donation to CRESP by the Dayton Dawson Endowment. Donations such as this allow Haymount UMC to continue making a difference in the lives of these children - thank you!
EVENTS
Haymount UMC is committed to making a positive impact on children in our community. In 2013, The Cumberland Road Elementary School Partnership (CRESP) was launched. Through the CRESP program we are able to reach a population of children who need assistance through mentoring, tutoring, collecting school supplies and offering support and encouragement to teachers. Although Covid has kept us out of the classroom, we have been grateful to be able to offer support in other ways.

Top 10 Reasons to Become a Stephen Minister at Haymount U.M.C. Reason #10: You will learn to turn crisis into opportunity. Crisis such as the COVID 19 pandemic is just one example of how much Stephen Ministers are needed. Reason #9: Stephen Ministers are skilled caregivers. They are not professional ministers or counselors. Training includes 50 hours of classes taught over a 6 month period of time. You will continue to receive education through workshops or speakers during the year. Reason #8: Stephen Ministers experience the joy of fellowship and growth with one another. They enjoy the one to one bond with their care receiver and support of their Stephen Ministry group during a group supervision meeting once a month. Reason #7: Stephen Ministers seek to truly understand the care receiver by actively listening. Reason #6: Stephen Ministers are assertive caregivers, trained to “speak the truth in love.” Reason #5: You have the following gifts: compassion, encourager, faithful, full of spirit, great listener, and patient. Look over your last gifts survey from the church and see if you are a candidate. Reason #4: Stephen Ministers feel needed (because they are)! Stephen Ministers are a great extension of care and support for our pastors. Reason #3: Stephen Ministry skills apply in other relationships such as the workplace and home. You will have a much better understanding of your spouse, children, bosses, friends, and co-workers with the Stephen Ministry training. Reason #2: Stephen Ministry is a life-changing experience. It will be used over and over throughout your life even when you are no longer a part of the Stephen Ministry group. Reason #1: Jesus commanded it. “love one another- verseStephen Ministers are all great at showing God’s love in action and sharing the burdens of so many who are troubled. Stephen Ministers meet with a Care Receiver who is going through a difficult time for about an hour weekly. Training is scheduled for the fall of 2020. Look for future articles on details and dates. Musical Notes Dear Haymount UMC Family, In our March issue, I will give a hymnody story on “O Food to Pilgrims Given,” page 631 in the hymnal. I have received many comments about this hymn. Namely, the following two questions: “Why do we sing it?” and “Why is it in the hymnal?” “O Food to Pilgrims Given” is a Latin communion text based on the Gospel of John 6:35-38 (I am the Bread of Life. This ancient text is attributed to Thomas Aquinas. The hymnal version was translated from the Maintzich Gesanguch, 1661 by John Athelstan Laurie Riley in 1906. The text uses imagery to reference communion. An example is “The cup is ‘the stream of love’ and the ‘purest fountain’ that revives us.” (The United Methodist Church 1989 Jesus’ representation in the wine and bread is referred to in the final stanza. The tune was first published in 1539, and it was later harmonized by J.S. Bach. He used the tune and varied harmonizations in St. Matthew’s Passion, St. John’s Passion, and Cantatas 13, 44, and 97. When we sing this hymn again, I hope you enjoy the opportunity to sing a hymn with a rich, long history within the Christian church.

To be a Stephen Minister Continued Loss of a loved one, Divorce, Retirement, Relocating, Illness, Caring for a loved one, Struggling with an issue from the past, Loss of job, Separation from loved ones… The list goes on and on. Anything that makes someone sad and struggling is a good reason to ask for a Stephen Minister. Since early January I have been training to be a Stephen Leader and am thoroughly enjoying it. I am excited to be joining our Stephen Leader Team in March. I will continue to work with my present care-receiver until that person no longer needs me. If you think you might want to use your gifts of compassion and caring to help someone who needs it, please consider joining us. Our next training period will probably be next fall. Pray about it. Being a Stephen Minister is truly rewarding.
