Dear Friends, My feet are still cold and damp even though it is past 2:00 in the afternoon. The temperature is hovering around freezing, and the sun has taken a day off…. again. As I write, we are in the depths of winter, February 15. And yet, by the time the worship schedule printed below is fulfilled, reality will have shifted. We will bring dogwood and azalea blossoms from our yards for the flowering of the cross, hunt for eggs in the greening grass, and have a cool drink on the screened porch with vaccinated friends in the afternoon’s glow. Spring’s new birth comes suddenly.
I met a new couple last month who were planning to be married. Tragically, he died of COVID this morning. She is returning to her home town. Birth and death are nearly always shocking. We know they are coming, and yet when that new reality manifests, it takes our breath. It is difficult for us to grasp the profundity of it. We have to get used to it by degrees. This is the significance of the Holy Week drama. One day, Jesus accepts the Hosannas of happy worshippers who proclaim Him Messiah. Four days later He is arrested, and on the fifth He is tortured to death. Life seems to stop for all who love Him. And then it is all reversed in the resurrection. Through our Lord Jesus Christ eternal life is ultimate reality. Death is a hard win-ter which gives way to Resurrection. News from your Finance Committee We are pleased to share that, thanks to God’s blessings to our church, through your pledges and gifts in 2020, our receipts were $1,350,855. In addition, we received a $124,500 Payroll Protection Plan grant through the Cares Act of 2020. Our expenses for the year were $1,448,091. No surprise to anyone the Pandemic affected all of us in various ways, but we are so blessed to have come through the year with so many accomplishments and the stewardship of all God has provided to and through HUMC. Thanks to the Trustees for all their time and efforts, the YAC was sold and $460,000 was applied toward our debt. We enter 2021 with a loan balance of less than $1M !! Currently it is approximately $920,416. We have established a restricted line item of $100,000, for chiller replacements. You provided more than $32,000 for our Christmas to Remember projects and more than $100,000 to our Organ and Acoustics fund. Our Endowments remain strong and provide assistance with missions and ministries each year, as do many restricted funds. THANK YOU ! Our weekly “Mission Moments” give us a glimpse of the opportunities and results for our gifts. January 2021 receipts were $ 132,075 and our expenses $99,064 We are grateful to the NCUMC Conference for a recently received grant of about $27,000 to assist with salaries and benefits for 2021. Souper Bowl 2021 The kids celebrated "Souper" Bowl Sunday by collecting canned soups that have been donated to Fayetteville Urban Ministry. _____________ Do you know of a child in Kindergarten through Fifth Grade who might want to be part of the Kids Group at Haymount Church? Interfaith Hospitality Network and Haymount Haymounters have supported IHN, an organization that helps homeless families, for many years. Although we do not house the guests in our facility now and do not provide food and supplies in person, we continue to support them with our thoughts, prayers and finances. We recently received this thank you note: "Although families are on site, we ask that everyone continues to keep them in their hearts, thoughts, and prayers. We appreciate your continued support which enables us to continue to serve homeless families in our community. It has been a hard year (2020) for all of us and we pray and know brighter days are ahead." We will provide for them March 21 - 27. If you would like to continue to support this endeavor of serving homeless families, you can make a donation to Haymount UMC and indicate "IHN" support on the memo line. The homeless families thank you for your support.
Haymount United Methodist SHOES SHOES SHOES!!! Share your slightly used or new shoes with the NCC United Methodist Women and support Partners in Ministry (PIM), a National Mission Institution in Laurinburg which gives a "hand up" for many struggling families. Children's Ministries A Look Ahead for Kids Summer Programs: June (for students who will have completed Kindergarten through Fifth Grade) - every Wednesday from 10am-12pm we will enjoy kids group time, maybe a field trip, maybe water games outside, maybe pizza making and a movie, or such. July (for students who will have completed a 4s preschool program through Fifth Grade) - VBS the week of July 12-15. The format is to be determined based on COVID protocols. August (for students who will have completed Kindergarten through Fifth Grade) - HUMC Day Camp at Camp Rockfish the week of August 2-5. The church will provide transportation to the camp and back each day. Registration numbers are limited for each program based on available space and safety protocols. LIGHT Kids Group Meets Sundays, 5:30-7:00 For kids in Kindergarten through Fifth Grade. All children in this age-group are invited! If you want to test your Bible knowledge, join us on Sunday, March 21st for the Kids on Youth Bible Family Feud!! It'll be fun and insightful!

Pack 740 Cub Scouts Cub Scouts are grateful to the HUMC staff for all of their support. We've been fortunate to have been able to offer our kids experiences that not many children in our community are getting to have right now. Since Summer 2020, we've been on hikes, we've earned awards, we participated in the annual District STEM event, volunteered, and so much more! Recently, we held our first ever "Fort Night" indoor camping experience where Scouts built forts in their own homes and participated in planned activities and games virtually. The included picture is of Cub Scouts who volunteered on the Saturday before Christmas to sing carols to residents at the North Carolina State Veterans Home. Interested in volunteering? Youth News by Drew Ellis, Director of Youth Ministries
Lent is one of my favorite times of the Christian calendar. As people who look from Ash Wednesday to the happenings of Holy Week, we often take on a fast from something. A fast is when you refrain from doing something for a length of time, often associated with food. But Lent is something different. We get to evaluate our lives, especially our lives in Christ, and see what can become better for God’s glory. In Lent, we fast by abstaining from something that takes us away from God (and God’s ways) and take on something that brings us closer to God. We may be in the middle of Lent, but it is not too late to start a fast! Here are some examples other than food that the Pope outlined some years ago—maybe you will take one of these on for your own Lenten journey: • • • • • • • • • • •
Fast from hurting words…and say kind words. Fast from sadness…and be filled with gratitude. Fast from anger…and be filled with patience. Fast from pessimism…and be filled with hope. Fast from worries…and have trust in God. Fast from complaints…and contemplate simplicity. Fast from pressures…and be prayerful. Fast from bitterness…and fill your hearts with joy. Fast from selfishness…and be compassionate to others. Fast from grudges…and be reconciled. Fast from words…and be silent so you can listen.
In the month of March, the youth will meet for ECHO youth group on Sunday evenings from 5:30-7:00. We meet in the New Life Center for dinner, games, lesson, and discussion. On March 21, the youth and children will be competing together in a Bible Quiz Bowl at the regular meeting time (see Dorothy Funkhouser for more information). March 28 will be a special Stations of the Cross night. Throughout our time at ECHO youth group, we will travel together through different stations around the church that will tell the story of Holy Week. We will move through the waving palm branches of the crowds, sit at the table with the disciples as Jesus has His final meal with them, pray in the Garden of Gethsemane, and stand at the foot of the cross. An amazing experience of looking toward Easter and the empty tomb is ready to be had! We also meet on Wednesdays from 4:30-5:30 for games and fellowship. This is a low key time to hang out, talk, play games, and just remember why we do what we do! Haymount United Methodist Church Music Ministry Dear Haymount UMC Family, We have many wonderful things happening at Haymount. The beautiful, refinished hardwood floors in the chancel have enhanced the sound of the chancel choir. During the month of February, a lot of progress was made on the installation of the Möller organ. Many congregation members have shared their excitement in seeing different parts of the installation. One of my spring projects, that is especially close to my heart, is our Kingdom Kids Worship Arts program. As a child, I remember my mother referencing the Bible passage “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6. I love watching children learn new music techniques, and then having the children share that music in worship. The handbell program just welcomed our first elementary ringer. She works hard, and she played in worship for the first-time in February. Our Kingdom Kids have shared their musical experience in worship during the last several months. These children are the future leaders of Haymount, and I am excited to watch them flourish over the next few years. During this semester, Mrs. Denise and I are redesigning Kingdom Kids Worship Arts. We realize that all children do not like singing. Our goal is to create a love of the arts and to introduce Haymount’s children to a variety of experiences. We are creating a children’s worship arts room to have a place for us to learn and grow. Outline for Kingdom Kids Worship Arts, February – May 2021. • February – Introduction to handchimes, Boomwhackers, elementary music theory, and drama elements. • March – Introduction to painting and liturgical chancel/altar design. The fabulous duo of Karen Argo and Woody Wells assisting. • April – Ukuleles (All of our children have asked to learn, so we are going to learn together.) Drew Ellis and Andrew Sánchez will help teach us. • May – A review of all we have learned this semester. • We welcome all children on Sundays from 4:45pm-5:30pm. 9:45AM Worship Greetings to you! March has arrived! How is everyone doing? A lot of you have received your COVID shot, praise God! We are well on our way to living in a COVID-free society and we can only give praise and thanks to God. Thanks to all the volunteers who make the 9:45 service so wonderful. The greeters, the musicians, the tech team, all bring good and collaborative energy. We have a small, but strong, team of volunteers and we could always use more. We have enough volunteers to make each Sunday morning “work” as it is supposed to. However, if a few people are unable to make Sunday mornings, then we are left with large and very noticeable holes to ill. As we are continuing our way through 2021 and continuing to igure out how to navigate through this pandemic, I want to encourage you to have dedicated conversations with Jesus for clarity on serving. Ask for wisdom and guidance in how you can be a part of the church and how you can further God’s kingdom here on Earth. We have all heard, “It takes a village to raise a child.” The same can be said for the Church. It takes a serving congregation to lift the Church. Facilities Update By Rev. Donald M. Warren Work continues in our sanctuary in preparation for the completion of the organ renovation project. The organ console itself has been returned to the church, completely refinished in a wood stain that mimics the stain color of the reredos. The inside of the console uses optical sensors to detect key and pedal movement, making it a fully contactless/wireless keyboard and pedalboard. The optical sensors will eed data through fiber optic cables to the pipes in the wind chamber above the choir loft, and to the newly completed Trompette de Gabriel en chamade rank mounted above the balcony. The pipes that remain in the windchest now must be cleaned and re-tuned as they are hooked up to the new electronics. Almost all the remaining work will happen here in-house, in Haymount’s sanctuary. We are getting closer to the finish line, having overcome numerous unexpected delays caused by the pandemic. The refinishing of the solid oak flooring in the chancel is also complete. Our flooring contractor, Mark Wilson, completely restored the beautiul existing oak flooring that was under the carpet and laid a brand-new layer of oak hardwood beneath the communion table and railings, as well as a new layer across the platform that now holds the organ console. This new organ platform was built for the church by members of our United Methodist Men. The hardwood is already making an amazing difference in the sound of our choir. When the organ is fully restored, having the hardwood in the chancel will allow its magnificent sound to fill the chancel and reverberate out into the nave. The hardwood is going to vastly improve the acoustics in the entire sanctuary. In anticipation of being able to resume more activities at church as the COVID vaccinations continue, we have added iWave ionic air purifiers to the upstairs Sunday School rooms in the old building and in the Commons Room, for ongoing protection against COVID and other bacterial and vi-ral infections. We will continue to add iWaves in the building as we move through this year.
