Ephesians 2021 Dear Friends, I went away for four days in March on a “Preaching Retreat.” I usually do this three or four times each year to spend time with the Lord in quiet solitude, seeking His guidance and inspiration for the teachings He wants me to bring to you. I usually start by looking at the lectionary, which is the recommended scriptures for each Sunday of the year. I worked and worked at it, but nothing seemed to flow. I knew the Holy Spirit was not moving. That is okay. It sometimes takes a day or two for me to sense God’s flow on these things. And then, as I woke up on one of the
mornings, I seemed to sense the Lord leading me to look at Ephesians. I was surprised, because I don’t think I’ve ever preached a series from Ephesians before, although I have preached from several texts in Ephesians. The nudging kept up as I was taking my shower, so I sat down to read the book with fresh eyes, looking for the leading of the Lord. As soon as I finished reading the six chapters, I knew the Lord had led me to the perfect teaching for us as we seek Him together at Haymount United Methodist. Ephesians is a beautiful book of the New Testament that is rich with encouragement and instruction for today. But there are also aspects of this book that applied differently in Ephesus in 60 A.D. than in Fayetteville NC in 2021. This teaching series will not only lift up the timeless message of God for all Christians, but will help us examine some of the ways the application of scripture grows and changes. The Columbarium I am so excited to share that a columbarium project for Haymount has been approved by our Church Council, Finance and Trustees committees! We can now secure donations to make this a reality for HUMC. This will be a tremendous opportunity for those of us who cherish our beloved Haymount with a connection that transcends time. Welcome and Thank You! We are honored and excited to welcome Amanda Peryer to lead the Haymount UMC Preschool! She comes with high recommendations from her previous employer, Hay Street UMC, where she served as preschool director. Amanda brings superb educational background and experience, and it will be a privilege to have her as an addition to the HUMC staff. Please extend a warm wel-come to Amanda should you stop by the church during the weekday! We also want to thank Lois Plummer for acting as interim director for six weeks. Lois allowed the preschool to remain open for the remainder of the school year, and allowed parents to sign up for the preschool for the coming year. Almost all of our classes are full for the 2021-2022 school year, and we celebrate that! Please share your appreciation with Lois when you see her. We could not have done it without her. The HUMC Preschool Board
Supporting Law Enforcement Officers Christians are called by scripture to support the just work of government. We do this when we pray for those who govern. We do this when we give government encouragement. We do this when we ask questions and call for appropriate change. All of these are good ways that the people of God can glorify Jesus Christ and make this world a better place for everyone. I asked some of the officers connected with our congregation to share some of the ways we can offer to support law enforcement officers. There were several specific suggestions: • Pray for them • Ask to "ride along" with an officer • Contribute to the Fayetteville Police Foundation. Mail a check to Cindy McCormic, Fayetteville Police Foundation, 467 Hay Street, 28301. This fund helps officers who are injured, etc. • Bring snacks to the police department at 467 Hay Street (If you bring them after 4 PM, the night shift will get some) • Tell the police when you see them that you appreciate them • Support officers in building community trust and positive change. There will be no cost for VBS this year, and the ages we will allow are kids who have completed the 4s preschool program through the children who have completed 3rd Grade.
Kid Serve KidServe - VBS on-the-go for students who have completed 4th or 5th Grades. Each day we will travel into the community and serve our neighbors through mission work. Destinations will be posted as they are finalized. VBS Mission Project for the entire congregation: Feeding Fayetteville Families for the Summer In a brown paper bag, please pack: 1 jar peanut butter 1 jar jelly 1 loaf bread 1 box or bag of rice 1 box of pasta 1 jar of pasta sauce 1 box of yummy cereal 1 bag of candy (no chocolate, please) Any other treats that will fit in the bag that you might want to add Bring the packed bags to the church office by July 14th. These will be delivered by the KidServe kids on July 15th to Fayetteville Urban Ministry.

Jazz Vespers In the words of Jerry Seinfeld, “Ya like jazz?” You are invited for an intimate evening of beautiful music, quiet prayer, and fun fellowship. On Tuesday, June 8th at 6pm in the sanctuary, Haymount will be presenting the very first Mini Jazz Vespers. Vespers have been a part of Christian worship for more than a thousand years. It is an evening worship service full of prayer and Scripture readings. Jazz music, in its birth, is a worshipful music. Combining the lush and spiritual music of jazz with the beauty and introspection of a vesper, this will surely be a wonderful and unique worship experience. After the service, we will enjoy fellowshipping with one another. You are invited to bring one food item: sandwiches, deviled eggs, or a dessert. Drinks will be provided. See you there!

Day Camp - Camp Rockfish August 2-5, 2021 For students who have completed Kindergarten through 12th Grade. Spaces are limited! Meet at the church at 8:15 am each morning, depart to Camp Rockfish at 8:30, and return to the church at around 3:30pm each afternoon. Activities include archery, creek walks, lake/river floats (weather-permitting), BB guns, sling shots, and so much more. We end each day in the pool to cool down and clean up. Each student is to bring a lunch in a cooler bag, and a water bottle each day. No flip flops are allowed. Each student must also bring a dry set of clothes to change into to ride home on the church bus or vans. Cost: $175/student (scholarships are available upon request.) Wonderful Wednesdays June's Wonderful Wednesday Get-Aways • For kids who have completed Kindergarten Fifth Grade • Each Wednesday we will get away to cool and special places to celebrate our God in His gracious generosity. Here are our destinations: June 2nd - Putt Putt Fun Center June 9th - The Climbing Place June 16th - Museum of Life and Science in Durham June 23rd - Greg's Pottery & Movie at the Omni June 30th - Aloha Safari Zoo in Sanford We will travel by church vans, so registration numbers are limited to 20 students. Costs will vary and will be posted on the church website on the registration page. Check out the website. Youth News The youth Group will meet throughout the summer! Every Sunday (unless specified otherwise via email/text/Facebook) at 5:30-7:00 we will be meeting for a time of dinner, games, and entering into the scripture. Throughout the summer, we will be looking at some of the many ways that we can do spiritual practices in our lives. By no means will this be an exhaustive list of what we can do to get closer to God, but I want to give you some of the basic tools necessary to build a devotional life and to continue to grow in your faith. The next several weeks, we will be looking at ways that you can sustain what John Wesley calls the ‘means of grace’. These means of grace are the ways that we connect with God and experience God’s grace to its fullest. We will look at accountability, reading scripture, prayer, worship, practicing sabbath, silence and solitude, and going out into the world in mission and fellowship. See you at youth group! We will also have the occasional Wednesday trip to places like Sweet Frog, Mazarick Park, Battlehouse Laser Tag, etc. Keep an eye out for more information! Endowment Disbursement The Nellie Smith Endowment for the Arts is vital to the music ministry at Haymount UMC. This endowment provided much needed funds that contributed to hiring professional musicians for our Christmas and Easter services. During the last two years, the monies given from this endowment allowed Haymount to employee seven local musicians. During the pandemic, many of the local professional musicians have lost employment. Through this fund and our congregation’s generosity, we have provided much needed employment to our local musicians. The congregation’s support of the Nellie Smith Endowment for the Arts strengthens our music ministry, and subsequently our community outreach with visitors viewing our live-streamed services. The Endowment Committee and congregation receive my sincerest thanks for your continued appreciation of the arts.
Music News Dear Haymount UMC Family, Summer is here, and the music ministry has wonderful music planned. The handbells are playing monthly, and the choir anthems highlight some wonderful instrumentalists. We anticipate the completed restoration of the pipe organ. Last week, I heard the new trumpet en chamade. It is a wonderful addition to the instrument. When the organ is completed, I will announce a date for an “organ crawl” that will allow you to see the improvements close to the instrument. This picture highlights our children and chancel choir on Mother’s Day. Stephen Ministry by Marilyn Winters
I came to Haymount United Methodist Church for the first time about two and a half months following the death of my sweet husband of 46 years looking for a home church, now that the daily cancer treatments, doctor visits, hope for a positive outcome and such were over. Being new to the state, and knowing very few people, I felt alone and without support. But admitting such to anyone was not in my self concept of being “strong.” As I sat there, I noticed something in the church bulletin about Stephen Ministry and thought to myself, "how nice for the church members to have access to someone to help make it through a tough time, to listen, and to be a support." I could have used the support that Stephen Ministry offers, but just didn’t know enough, and was not brave enough to ask. I had thoughts and feelings needing to be shared, but not a place to do that. I didn’t want to burden the few people I knew and didn’t think they wanted to hear me express my sadness, angst, and questioning things “again and again.” I didn’t think that what I was experiencing was “significant enough” to warrant someone spending time talking with me. After all, isn’t death a known part of everyone’s life? There are other people who have “far more serious issues.” I didn’t know that Stephen Ministry was available to non-church members; that it provided a safe confidential place to express thoughts, feelings, and concerns without judgment; or that its ministers were as well trained as they are to offer supportive care based on Christian principles. I didn’t ask. On reflection, I would have benefited from having a Stephen Minister. Someone to help me sort through the thoughts and questions I had by active listening, to just be there, and to share my journey. Don’t be me. If you are struggling (quietly, internally) with some life event that has you off-kilter, call to learn more. The process is confidential, and it can’t hurt to check it out.
