Continued from the Previous Page I am grateful that I knew the Lord well enough as a young man to clearly apprehend God’s call into ministry through the Holy Spirit’s gift of knowledge. I tremendously enjoy being a pastor, and once I answered the call, there has never been a vocation that sounded more attractive to me than ministry. The Lord knew exactly what I was best suited for, which surprises no believer. The book of Ephesians talks a lot about living “in union with Jesus.” Learning how to discern his leading and having the faith to follow that leading is one of the most important ways of developing union with Him. Union with Jesus is the secret to a meaningful life filled with joy and peace.

Say "Hello" to Kathy Mathis by Dorothy Funkhouser
Please help me welcome our new Assistant to the DCE, Kathy Mathis. Kathy has been a member of Haymount UMC for five years, has served in ministry in several capacities in the Outreach Committee, and continues to serve as a Stephen Leader/Referrals Coordinator of our church's Stephen Ministry. Kathy is taking classes at Duke Divinity School, pursuing a Masters Degree in Christian Practice, and now she has joined the HUMC staff. I am delighted to be working with Kathy. Please, when you see her in the hallways, help me express appreciation for all that Kathy is doing in ministry for our God. On that note, I want to thank Tina Torbett for giving so freely and cheerfully for the past five years as the Assistant to the DCE. She has been a blessing to many families, and the children are already missing her. Tina has decided to pursue her crafting career, and we wish her well. Fortunately, Tina and Tom will still be around the church halls - praise God!

Glad to Have You Back! We are delighted that Dianne and Tad Davis have moved back to town and are members again at Haymount. Dianne was Sunday School Superintendent, and Tad was Sunday school teacher for 7th grade boys.
Stephen Ministry Haymount is a Stephen Ministry Congregation. You’ve probably seen that on our weekly news e-update and other places. Perhaps you have an inkling of what that means. In case you don’t, here is some info about Stephen Ministry. Stephen Ministers are trained to give care to people who need support. We go into each situation with prayer, knowing that Jesus is the true Caregiver. We spend time with those who are dealing with something in their lives that is troubling them. They may have lost a loved one or been through a divorce. Maybe they ‘ve lost a job or they’re dealing with illness. Perhaps they are depressed for any number of reasons. Or they may be lonely. These are just examples. Caregivers and care receivers are prayerfully and carefully matched up. Everything is completely confidential. If you or someone you care about would benefit from spending time with a Stephen Minister, please contact Dorothy Funkhouser at in the church office (484-0181). Also, if YOU have a servant’s heart and believe that you could be a Stephen Minister, pray about it. From my experience, it has been one of the best decisions I have ever made!

Jazz Vespers - Take 2 Last month’s Jazz Vesper service was a huge hit! Thank you to everyone who participated in it live or online. In case you missed it, we have another Jazz Vesper service on Tuesday, July 13th. You do not want to miss it. Go on our church facebook page to view last month’s service from June 8th. After the worship service we will have a time of fellowship with one another. You are invited to bring sandwiches, deviled eggs, and dessert.
Church Movie Night One of the traditions at Christ Church before its merger with Haymount was a monthly movie night with dinner and a movie. On Friday, July 9th, the old Christ Church gang will serve a hot dog supper for the whole Haymount church family in the Fellowship Hall and we will watch The North Avenue Irregulars, starring Cloris Leachman and Barbara Harris, about a church choir, pastor, organist, and secretary who take on the mob! Youth News As I write this article for the July newsletter, I realize there are 30 days until I turn 30 years old (July 11th to be exact). With such a big milestone ahead, I wanted to share a list of thirty things that I have learned in life. Maybe some, or all, will be helpful to you: 1. Don’t confuse excellence for perfection. 2. Apologize when you have done harm. 3. Money isn’t everything; do something that makes you happy, or your job will become work. 4. You need to put yourself in situations that provide growth. 5. Be content in your relationship status, whether it is single, dating, engaged, married. 6. Write lists. 7. Never underestimate the power of a smile. 8. Spend time outside. 9. It is just as okay to say “no”, as it is to say “yes”. 10. Have the courage to evaluate yourself, and transform your life when something is needing to change. 11. Learn to cook something other than delivery pizza. 12. Sabbath provides many benefits: physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. 13. There is a Haitian word—degaje—that reminds of the importance of flexibility. 14. Never let a bully win. 15. Curiosity didn’t kill the cat; always be willing to ask questions if you do not understand something. 16. Find a balance between spontaneity and planning. 17. Never let anyone make fun of you because of your passions. 18. As you learn new facts, opinions are able to change. 19. Read great books on spiritual practices, and figure out new ways to experience God. 20. What your time and money is spent on reflects what is important to you. 21. Trying and failing is okay; success doesn’t always come easily. 22. Always make time for your friends and family. 23. When in doubt, extend grace. 24. The faster you finish a project, the sooner you can have fun. 25. Everyone has scars in their lives; be nice to others, and work through your trau-ma. 26. Do good in all the ways you can. 27. Be true to your truest self. 28. Listen. 29. God loves you. 30. With the love you have been given through God, loving others comes first. - Drew Ellis
Music News - Argo/Aycock Concert Series Dear Haymount UMC Family, I hope you are enjoying a wonderful summer! I have some exciting news to share with the you. HUMC’s music ministry was awarded a grant through the Arts Council of Fayetteville/Cumberland County. This fall, the music ministry will launch the Argo/Aycock Concert Series. During HUMC’s history, we have been blessed with vibrant and exciting music leadership. When I ask congregants about the music ministry, they always refer to Tony Argo and Judy Aycock. Their leadership blessed this church for many years, and the dedication of this concert series is a small gift to Tony and to Judy’s family for their many years of service to the congregation. Wesley Heights UMC Merges with Haymount UMC By Rev. Donald M. Warren and NC Conference Archives A joint charge conference was held on June 16, 2021, presided over by District Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Locklear, to effect a merger between Haymount UMC and Wesley Heights UMC. The motions passed unanimously, and as of July 1, Haymount and Wesley Heights will officially be one church. Wesley Heights has a long history, and as we anticipate that congregation coming to join us at Haymount, we also recognize the significance of Wesley Heights and its history in our community and in the world. In the year 1946 several people in this community decided that a Methodist Church was needed in the Ramsey Street area of Fayetteville. Meetings were held in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin D. Riddle and others who were interested. Rev. T. J. Whitehead, pastor of the Fayetteville Circuit, and Rev. W. L. Clegg, Superintendent of the Fayetteville District, were contacted. Both were enthusiastic and a survey was made which showed the community wanted to support a Methodist Church. A committee was appointed to find a location and the site at 304 Trinity Drive was chosen. After the location was approved by the Church Extension Board, three lots were purchased at a cost of $1,000.00. The first meetings were held under the pines where the church now stands. The piano from the home of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin D. Riddle was moved by pickup truck on Sundays for worship. An improvised altar was erected, and on September 29, 1946, the church was organized with Rev. Whitehead was serving as pastor. The Hut, costing approximately $4,500.00, replaced the improvised altar in December of 1946. The question of the name of the church was discussed and Rev. Whitehead suggested that it be named Wesley Heights Methodist Church. At one time Wesley Heights, Johnson Memorial and Gardner's Chapel were known as the Northmount Charge. Wesley Heights experienced growth from a membership of thirteen at the organizational meeting in 1946 to a membership of four hundred and fifty-one in 1966. At that time, the present Sanctuary seating 165 people was no longer inadequate. (Continued on the next page)
Continued From the Previous Page A house and lot were purchased on Langdon Street and additional property beside and behind the present buildings was purchased to build a proposed new Sanctuary seating approximately 450 people. This construction project never came to fruition. The Hall Educational Building was named for Mr. Fleet Hall and his son Murray Hall, two departed members who worked so faithfully. This building was dedicated by Bishop Paul N. Garber on July 3, 1966. In the 1970’s, the first female pastor ever to be appointed in the Fayetteville District, Rev. Nancy Best, served at Wesley Heights. In the 1980’s, Wesley Heights was served by another female pastor, Rev. Mary von Cannon. Dr. Tryon Lancaster served as pastor of Wesley Heights for 21 years, listed the entire time as “interim supply,” the longest “interim” assignment in NC Conference history. Haymount and Wesley Heights share a lot of historical connections. Rev. Donald Warren was baptized at Wesley Heights, because it was the family church. Donald’s great-grandparents were Marvin and Bessie Riddle who held the organizing meeting and supported the church in the very beginning. Fleet Hall is his great-grandfather, and Murry Hall was his grandfather, for whom the education building was named. His grandmother, Edna Riddle Hall, who died this year at age 101, was the last surviving charter member of Wesley Heights. Rev. Woody Wells received his local preacher’s license at Wesley Heights. Janet Smith, now Janet Cameron, and her family were very active members there, and Marijane Haley was a former Wesley Heights member. Retired Wesley Heights pastor Dr. Tryon Lancaster is the father of Haymount members Paige McMillan and Jamie Lancaster. Haymount is so excited to welcome the members of Wesley Heights in our church family. We are grateful that God has led Wesley Heights to continue its ministries and missions by becoming a part of Haymount UMC. Welcome!
