Pastoral Message Continued This means we recently began the process of conducting a search for a new position: Organist and Director of Traditional Music. This new, combined position allowed us to offer a salary sufficient to attract a distinguished organist and director. A search committee was formed, and in just a few days we hired our dream candidate: DR. MONICA SPARZAK! I believe that everyone involved felt that this hire was orchestrated by the Holy Spirit. It is a beautiful story; if you’d like to hear more about it, just ask me or the Search Chair, Carol Lloyd. Many of you already know Monica, because she has frequently played organ and directed at Haymount over the years. Monica has impeccable training in church choral and organ music, great experience, and a sweet spirit. I love the fact that Monica took many of her courses for her Master’s Degree at Candler, the United Methodist seminary at Emory in Atlanta. She learned worship with some of the most important United Methodist teachers in the denomination. In addition, her Doctorate of Musical Arts in Organ and Church Music is from one of the most prestigious music faculties in the United States. When the Search Committee met on June 29, they immediately, enthusiastically, and unanimously offered her the job. We look forward to welcoming Monica and her lovely family. Her husband, Paul, is the OB/GYN Residency Program Director at Cape Fear Valley and clinical physician. Their two sons, Liam age 9, and Matthew age 12, look forward to attending Saint Pat’s in the fall. Monica’s job begins on August 17, so we will have plenty of time to prepare glorious music to lift our hearts to the Lord as we celebrate our 75th Anniversary and the Christmas season! Finally, I want to thank each of you for your generous and loving support for Haymount Church during this time of Covid. Your gifts, your participation on-line, and your outreach to neighbors has been truly inspiring. And we are preparing great things for the months ahead. Glory to God! Top 10 Reasons to Become a Stephen Minister at Haymount U.M.C. Reason #10: You will learn to turn crisis into opportunity. Crisis such as the COVID 19 pandemic is just one example of how much Stephen Ministers are needed. Reason #9: Stephen Ministers are skilled Christian caregivers. They are not professional ministers or counselors. Training includes 50 hours of classes taught over a 6 month period. You will continue to receive education through workshops or speakers during the year. Reason #8: Stephen Ministers experience the joy of fellowship and growth with one another. They enjoy the one to one bond with their care receiver and support of their Stephen Ministry group during a peer group supervision meeting once a month. Reason #7: Stephen Ministers seek to truly understand the care receiver by actively listening. Reason #6: Stephen Ministers are assertive caregivers, trained to “speak the truth in love.� Reason #5: You have the following gifts and are: compassionate, an encourager, faithful, full of spirit, a great listener, and patient. Look over your last gifts survey from the church and see if you are a candidate. Reason #4: Stephen Ministers feel needed (because they are)! Stephen Ministers are a great extension of care and support for our pastors.
Stephen Ministry Continued Reason #3: Stephen Ministry skills apply in other relationships such as the workplace and home. You will have a much better understanding of your spouse, children, bosses, friends, and co-workers with the Stephen Ministry training. Reason #2: Stephen Ministry is a life-changing experience. It will be used over and over throughout your life even when you are no longer a part of the Stephen Ministry group. Reason #1: Jesus commanded it. “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up”. (1 Thess. 5:5). Stephen Ministers are all great at showing God’s love in action and sharing the burdens of so many who are troubled. As the logo states: Christ caring for people through people. Stephen Ministers meet with a care receiver who is going through a difficult time for about an hour weekly. Training is scheduled for the fall of 2020. Look for future articles on details and dates. HUMW Update United Methodist Women (UMW), the largest United States denominational women's mission organization, supports women and improves life for women, children, and youth in the US and internationally since 1869. Today we are in "stay home" mode but continue our work - not hands on but still "touching" lives. We are calling, emailing, sending cards, having phone conferences or zoom meetings and in some instances providing meals for people. We are playing "catch up" on reading, house cleaning, closet purging, etc. All NCC UMW meetings for the rest of the year have been modified (having a zoom meeting) or cancelled. We will decide what we can do at Haymount. This UMW quadrennial theme is love with scripture from I John 4:7: Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Perhaps God is giving us this time to be still, meditate and listen to what He has for us. We need love anytime, but especially during these times.
Sanctuary Flowers If you would like to provide flowers for our sanctuary, we would love to have them! The flowers would be seen either online in our worship service video or seen live when our worship resumes during Phase 3. The flowers can be picked up after the service or shared with 8-10 home-bound members during the following week. Jennie at the office (910-484-0181) can let you know what Sundays are available. Camp Rockfish - YAY!! We're Going! August 3rd – 6th, 8:15am – 3:30pm For students in 6th through 12th Grade. We will have both children and teens out this year; each will be in appropriate age groups and participate in their age level activities. We will limit our group to a total of 30 students. Each student must wear a mask while on the bus, and temperature will be taken before we board. We will meet at the church each morning at 8:10 by the New Life Center, depart immediately at 8:30 and return each afternoon at 3:30-3:45. Parents must sign in and out each time. Cost: $125/camper – scholarships are available. Contact Dorothy.Funkhouser@Haymountumc.com for information. Each student will need to bring … • A bag lunch in a cooler bag and water bottle • Swimsuit and change of dry clothes (must wear dry clothes home on the bus), towel and water shoes. • Students will need to wear shorts, shirts and close-toed shoes while at camp. We will walk a lot, so wear comfy shoes! • The day of the mudwalk, the students will need to wear very old clothes that you don’t mind getting stained. The mud does not wash out! • Girls, tie your hair back! Hats are recommended. HUMC Food Drive Haymount hosted multiple food drives during the corona virus pandemic. The most recent two took place during the last week of June. Each time, the food went to Urban Ministry. As you might imagine, the need is great at this time and we thank you for your generous response.

Dayton Dawson Endowment Gift Provides Books for Cumberland Road Elementary Students Since 2013, Haymount UMC has provided the students at Cumberland Road Elementary School with school supplies, clothing, volunteers for the classroom, behind the scenes organizational help and so much more! Through your generous donations, we have been able to supply some of the educational needs for hundreds of children since the program’s inception– thank you! As with so many of you, our plans came to an abrupt halt when schools dismissed in March due to COVID 19. Even though we were not able to finish our year in the classroom, we were committed to our mission of providing each child with a new book for the summer. For the second year in a row, the Dayton Dawson Endowment Fund made this possible by provided funds which allowed us to purchase 497 books! During these extraordinary times, God is using Haymount UMC to touch the lives of those who need us most!
Ready to do some good? Orcacoke Work Teams! Did you know that there are still 50-70 homes on Ocracoke Island that remain damaged and uninhabited from Hurricane Dorian? Disaster Relief ministries on Ocracoke is now able to house work teams, and we hope to help out on September 13-18 and October 11-16. Masks and distancing are required for all team members, and the minimum age is 18. Each team can be from 4-10 folks. For more information, please call/text Karen Barkman (910-818-9050).

Worship Services as we thank God for 75
For Sale! The Christ UMC building on Raeford Road. is being sold. The sale is expected to close in October. We are going to be holding a "garage" sale with all the items remaining in the building. Money from the sale will go into the Christ Church endowment, which is to be used to support Haymount ministries, particularly those for youth and children. We will not be taking on additional items for the Christ UMC sale. As soon as we enter phase 3, we will be able to receive items at church for the next garage sale at Haymount. Help is needed. The sale will be held in Christ UMC, with items left in the rooms where they have been used. We need to price them in place. We will start pricing on July 20th, working for a few hours at a time, two or three days a week. The sale is planned for mid August, and may last a few days. July Teaching Series - In the Garden with Jesus Have you ever noticed it is just about impossible to work in the yard, or in the garden, and worry at the same time? I suppose that is one of the reasons many of us enjoy yardwork so much. There is a lot of stress all around us, so perhaps it would be refreshing and strengthening to spend some time ruminating on the stories of Jesus as he uses gardening parables to open to us the secrets of the universe.
