As we begin the journey of this New Year, we want to walk it each day with Jesus. This desire to walk with Jesus may be mostly motivated by enlightened self-interest, and not out of mere piety. And yet, as we experience his miraculous provision and care, we want to keep company with him because we have developed an unbreakable bond of love. That is true piety. We understand that life is often challenging in ways that surprise and confound us, and we
need God’s help to overcome those challenges. Sometimes those challenges have to do with navigating relationships with family and friends who themselves are going through a tough time. Sometimes those challenges have to do with changes in health or finances. Sometimes they have to do with grief and our own spiritual cries for meaning and significance. And sometimes they have to do with an addiction that seems to be gradually taking over our lives. Sometimes the solutions to life’s problems lie within our grasp. We see the way forward, and even though it may be a hard path, we walk it and come out on the other side in good shape. (Continued on Page 2)

Continued from Page 1 But at other times, we face problems that are simply too big for us to handle. The solutions to our problems are simply impossible. They threaten to destroy us. And then, God steps in. He brings unexpected solutions which seem to come from nowhere. He brings unexpected resilience which allows us to regain the strength and joy of life despite our circumstances. He brings physical and emotional healing. It is good for us to rehearse, to share, to celebrate these miraculous interventions of God! They remind us that our God is able to make us victorious over life’s challenges, and that he is a God of Miracles. Wednesday Evening Fellowship 6.0 The Fellowship Meals Committee is hard at work preparing for the return of fellowship and food as part of the Wednesday church activities in February. We will serve meals from 5:15 – 6:15 pm beginning February 2 through April 13 with a varied menu provided by local vendors, published below. PUT FEBRUARY 2 ON YOUR CALENDAR NOW! COME ENJOY SAMMIO’S SPAGHETTI WITH MEAT SAUCE OR MARINA OR GLUTEN FREE PIZZA WITH SALAD AND BREADSTICKS AND IT’S FREE FOR ALL ATTENDING! FOR THIS SPECIAL MEAL RESERVATIONS MUST BE MADE BY TUESDAY, JANUARY 26. YOU MAY MAKE A RESERVATION ON THE CHURCH WEBSITE OR BY PLACING YOUR RESERVATION IN THE OFFERING PLATE. NEW PAYMENT METHODS: Beginning February 9, meals will be free for children 11 and younger and $5.00 for everyone else. However, you must PAY WHEN YOU MAKE YOUR RESERVATION! Due to our lack of funding, we will only make a reservation for the number of people who have prepaid. You may prepay online when you make your reservation OR you may pay by cash or check by using the reservation envelopes available on Sundays and placing it in the offering. New Year News In December, the youth were active through multiple volunteer opportunities! We were able to help serve at the Moravian Love Feast, became Santa’s helpers at the Twas the Night event, and even found ways to be included in the worship services through music. What a jolly way to celebrate during Christmas time! We were able to hold an Ugly Christmas sweater competition at our Christmas party, in addition to hearing the Christmas story, playing games, and having good fellowship together. What a (non-)silent night! Looking ahead to February, next month marks the beginning of Confirmation. This is a time for the sixth graders (and anyone else who has not been confirmed) to learn about the United Methodist roots and to find ways to be involved in church membership. Dr. Elizabeth Tyson, in tandem with Drew Ellis and Dr. John Tyson, will be leading the class. These classes are being offered the same night as Wednesday Evening Fellowship, so all are encouraged to join for the meal before we begin! "Giving God Thanks Boxes" Kids' Mission Project The children put together 17 boxes for the residents of The Lodge at Operation Inasmuch. Included in each box was a card of blessing for the recipients that the children personally wrote. They want to thank their church family for supporting them in this mission outreach. To quote one cute Second Grader, "The person who is getting this box is just going to love it!"
Musical Notes Dear Haymount UMC Family, Some of you know that I love to plan – 5 year plans are great! However, sometimes it is nice to take a moment to appreciate the wonderful things that happened during the previous year. During 2021, the congregation welcomed our beautiful pipe organ back after its renovation.. We have enjoyed wonderful music throughout the year, especially during Holy Week, the 75th Anniversary, and the Advent/Christmas Season. The Chancel Choir, HUMC Ringers, HUMC Orchestra, Youth Handbells, and Kingdom Kids have led music in worship multiple times during the year. We are blessed to have these dedicated musicians that actively participate in worship. During the summer, Andrew Sànchez, Leader of Contemporary Worship, created three beautiful jazz vespers services. We created our logo Music at Haymount and the Argo~Aycock Concert Series. The series began with the Halloween concert and the revival of the Moravian Lovefeast. In December, the liturgical dancers participated in worship for the first time since the start of the pandemic. During 2022, we have wonderful music planned for February with a Mardi Gras themed jazz concert, sponsored in part by the Fayetteville-Cumberland County Arts Council, and a spring concert featuring the Methodist University Chorale in April. I pray that you all enjoy good health and happiness in 2022.

CPR and First Aid We have our training date set for Monday, January 10th in the Fellowship Hall. The cost is $55/person and can be paid with cash, personal check or church check. The training is limited to 18 people. Please call the church office to sign up.
Wesley Heights Painting Bu: Lani Dickey In 1952, Reverend Barney Davidson painted "Jesus Knocking at the Door" for Wesley Heights United Methodist Church while he was their minister. Reverend Davison served churches in the North Carolina Methodist Conference for over 30 years. In his early years, he painted a Biblical picture for each church he pastored. He said he wanted every member of the congregation to have a large visual representation of Christ as they worshiped. In 2021, when Wesley Heights merged with Haymount, Lani Dickey, his daughter and her husband, Pitt, moved the painting to Haymount. Lani and Pitt have been members of Haymount for over 40 years, so this is an appropriate place for the painting to find a home.

Stephen Ministry I had the joy of attending my niece’s wedding recently. It was a day of joy and many reminders of the bonds of family. She sent a thoughtful thank you note right before the ceremony, thanking me for the gift and the other ways I was supporting her as she began her married life. Cameron grew up all over the United States as her father was in the Air Force. In her thank you note, she thanked me for always being present. Holidays, graduations, even times of sadness, we were together and “ present”. This sentiment reminds me so much of the essence of Stephen Ministry. The pure unconditional gift of being present. A Stephen Minister is to be alongside someone. In times of turmoil, stress, sickness, transitions , and yes, joys, a Stephen Minister is there simply to be present. The act of letting someone know that in the journey of life they are not alone and there are people who will stand beside them. I give thanks for my niece and the bond of family. I give thanks for Stephen Ministers at Haymount UMC who have given of themselves to be present for others in countless ways. Jesus us calls us to love as He has loved. Stephen Ministry is a glimpse into that lifestyle of loving one another. Wednesday Evening Bible Study 6:15-7:15pm in Room 222 Beginning January 12th This group Bible study will take a look at the Wisdom literature found in the Bible. We will use Mickey Efird’s video lectures and then spend time discussing what we have learned. The writings we will cover in this study include Job, Ecclesiastes, Ruth, Jonah, Esther, Song of Solomon, Daniel wisdom teachings, Apocrypha wisdom (Susanna, Bel and the Dragon, Tobit and Judith) and Gospel wisdom. HUMC Endowment Program in Action The Endowment Committee is pleased that several more of our funds with “available earnings” will be added to our automatic annual distribution in 2022. So, we will have more endowment income to assist with the church’s needs!! We are so thankful to our members and friends, past and present, who have established these endowments to benefit our church. Here is an example of the impact of the first distribution from the Senior Adult Ministries Endowment Fund: This past summer a new weekly class started at Haymount, the Seniors Yoga Class. It is a wonderful hour of stretching, breathing and self-care. The average attendance is 8 - 12 participants and our instructor is Tara Van Geons. A big thanks goes to the HUMC Endowment Committee for approving our funding request, which provided the yoga mats and Tara’s salary. It has been a fantastic experience, both of physical relaxation and fellowship. The timing was great, as we were just coming back to activities at Haymount. Thanks so much again to the Endowment Committee for the generous stewardship of these funds. See the attached photo. Impact article submitted by Katherine Pugh, Congregational Care Committee Chair. Haymount United Methodist Women As we approach the New Year, let us be calmed by the Serenity Prayer: God, grant me the SERENITY to accept the things I cannot change, the COURAGE to change the things I can, and the WISDOM to know the difference. SERENITY: When we are alone, we may not solely change the world, but together we can do powerful good. When we are asked to serve, we are part of God's just world. Know you are not alone as you seek to do good and know God. COURAGE: Follow the lead of some of the women of the Bible. They broke barriers and persisted. The work of UMW does this too, offering action and reflection. WISDOM: UMW as an organization is strategizing to grow into the future as the world around us is changing. I invite you to find all the places and ways where God meets you, offering you respite as you seek SERENITY, COURAGE, AND WISDOM. May you find peace in this anxious world knowing you can help change your corner of the world especially for women, children and youth.
