What is a miracle? Perhaps we could say that a miracle is when God breaks into our ordinary lives in extraordinary ways. When we say that we believe in miracles, we are saying that we believe that God is all-powerful, and that God intervenes in the small concerns of ordinary people, as well as the great concerns of nations. It is wonderful, and perhaps surprising, that the Lord of the universe hears the anguished cries of individuals, and responds. Jesus says in Luke 12:6-7, “Are not five sparrows
sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” And yet, the idea of miracles is problematic. What if the occurrence is not actually a miracle, but just a fortunate coincidence? And what if one prays, hopes, and believes for a miracle that does not come? What then? Ah! Those questions are too great for me. I don’t know why miracles sometimes happen, and sometimes do not. I don’t know why angels sometimes intervene physically in times of danger, and sometimes do not. I don’t know why some people are miraculously healed from serious illnesses, and some are not. Continued from Page 1 And yet, I have lived long enough with the Lord to see many miracles- and many of you have as well. We won’t try to solve all those questions in the month of February. We will just look at some of the miracle stories in the Bible, and tell stories of our own. So if you have experienced something that feels like a miracle from God, please contact me. It might boost someone else’s faith to hear your wonderful story. God bless you during this month of miraculous love! Dr. John

And sometimes that encounter brings miraculous provision for us spiritually and materially. 2/13 The Miracle at the Wedding John 2:1-12 Jesus has this marvelous ability to take ordinary things and make them extraordinary. 2/20 The Miracle of Healing Mark 5 This chapter in Mark’s gospel tells us there is nothing impossible with God! 2/28 The Miracle of a Calling Luke 9:28-36 Not everyone discerns a clear sense of calling. But when God’s calling comes to us, and we respond, it is miraculous in its power to bring purpose, meaning, heartache, and joy. Announcement: The Tyson’s will be moving to new appointments in June. Did You Know? Greetings from Finance, Did You Know... In 2021: • Haymount United Methodist Church provided more than $ 33,000 for Fayetteville Urban Ministries and the Rwanda Well Project through our Christmas to Remember Gifts. • Haymount United Methodist Church Garage Sale proceeds provided $26,000 for Inspirational Arts, local and international missions. • Haymount Endowments provided over $21,000 for facilities, scholarships, worship, children and senior adults ministries. • Haymount received more than $150,000 in grants. • HUMC has a fund (the Haymount Church Community Fund) for support of individuals/families with benevolent needs. **Requests are made to the Sr Minister and are confidential as are the disbursements. Questions may be directed to the Assistant to the Sr Minister or the Finance Director.

Haymount Endowment Program in Action “Supporting our Church Now and Forever” The Endowment Committee would like to remind staff and members that it will soon be time to apply for disbursements from our endowment funds. The following funds offer disbursements by application: *Marlin Stewart Fund - for camp scholarships, preschool/daycare scholarships and needs of underprivileged children. Applications due April 15. *Nellie Smith Arts Fund - for worship arts and art education. Applications due April 15. *Dayton A. Dawson Fund - for needs of underprivileged children. Applications due April 15. *Mary Evelyn Cross Hayes Fund - for UMW programs, children and youth programs and the sanctuary flower fund. Applications due August 15. *Senior Adult Ministries Fund - for a comprehensive older adult ministry at HUMC. Ministry components to include: spiritual, enrichment, nutrition, intergenerational, outreach, recreation and service. Applications due August 15. Please contact the Finance Office for any questions and the application form. The application form will also be posted on the church website soon. The great news is that during 2021 our disbursements have totaled more than $21,000. Since the Endowment Program was started at HUMC in 1987, our total disbursements are more than $130,000! If you would like to learn more about contributing to one of our endowment funds or developing your own endowment, please contact one of the Endowment Committee members: Lucy Jones, chair, 910-977-2809, David Barkman, Libby Daniel, Sandy Hurley, Martha Owen, Lynda Clark, Woody Wells, or Dr. John Tyson. Please Join Us! Every year United Methodist Women (UMW) are invited to “A Call to Prayer and Self-Denial” observance. It welcomes all to join in a celebration of selfless giving and spiritual communion with God. The 2022 theme, “Love, Justice and Service: Answering the Call,” honors deaconesses and home missioners who answered “yes” to the call. NCC UMC and NCC UMW have 24 deaconesses and home missioners. Cumberland County has one – Brenda Brown. These are consecrated laity who have dedicated their lives to vocations of love, justice and service which includes social work, education, healthcare, antipoverty initiatives, firefighting, legal justice and more. Your prayers and sacrificial giving make an impact in the lives of women, children and youth served through the lay Order of Deaconess and Home Missioner. Paul reminds us in 2 Corinthians 8:12 that all gifts are acceptable when given with a willing heart according to what one has. The Prayer and Self-Denial observance is another way UMW work to turn faith, hope, and love into action on behalf of women, children and youth in every corner of the world.
Music Carnival Grab your beads and red beans and rice because we are continuing with our first annual Argo-Aycock concert series this month with a Mardis Gras themed concert. On Sunday, February 27 in the New Life Center we will be featuring one of North Carolina’s own, Andrew Sanchez and his Hip Six. The Hip Six have traveled extensively across the state performing in schools and music festivals performing traditional jazz and original jazz music. Andrew and members of the Hip Six have shared the stage with many well known jazz artists such as Bria Skonberg, Matt Wilson, Molly Ringwald, Ali Jackson, JD Allen, Melva Houston, and many others. Please join us for this free concert and what is to be a most memorable night and some of the best jazz music you’ll hear. This concert is part of the Argo-Aycock concert series and is partially funded through a generous grant from The Arts Council of Fayetteville/Cumberland County and the North Carolina Arts Council.

WEF Postponed - Again Due to the current surge in cases, Church Council and the WEF committee have postponed the start of WEF. We will revisit the decision in a few weeks. So whatever date we start, we will then go to April 13. STAY TUNED! Once we begin the following directions will apply: Reservations and Signup for Helping Now you can make your reservations and pay for meals from the new start date until April 13 on Realm (Go to EVENTS) OR by using the link that will be published in the e-update and bulletin each week OR by enclosing your payment in the special envelopes available on Sunday during both services. Be sure to complete all the information so we can order appropriately. Reservations must be made and paid by Monday at 5 PM. We are still looking for members to help with all the jobs required to make this fellowship time function. Mission Garage Sale Our next garage sale will be held March 4th (10:00-3:00) and 5th (8:30-1:00). We have been pricing items for a couple of months, but there is still plenty of storage space on our shelves for more items. If you have things to donate, bring them now, so that we can prepare ahead of time. Large items - furniture, bikes, etc. - go up the elevator to 228. Smaller things go to the basement. If you can't carry things down, leave them at the top of the stairs. Books can go to the bookshelves in the Fellowship Hall (then no one has to carry them up and down!). 75 Years! BSA Boys Troop 740 Celebrated their 75th Anniversary on Sunday, January 9th. Haymount UMC chartered it's first BSA unit over 75 years ago, and it has been going strong ever since. Haymount Church thanks our leaders for keeping the legacy alive! The congregation has a history of being supportive in its growth and its work with the scouts. Kids Ministries Parents, remember, there are great discipleship ministries just for your kids! Sunday School for all ages is at 10am. The focus of this ministry is on the Bible. LIGHT Kids Group is at 5:30pm on Sundays for kids in Kindergarten-Fifth Grade. The focus of this ministry is Christian fellowship - a great entry point for kids. Email Dorothy.Funkhouser@Haymountumc.com for details. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The baby gifts collected at the 4pm Christmas Eve Worship Service were delivered to The Methodist Home for Children. The Home accepted the gifts with great appreciation, and asked that all the children and families were thanked for thinking of the babies in foster care.
Wednesday Evening Bible Study 6:15-7:15pm in Room 222 Beginning February 2 This group Bible study will take a look at the Wisdom literature found in the Bible. We will use Mickey Efird’s video lectures and then spend time discussing what we have learned. The writings we will cover in this study include Job, Ecclesiastes, Ruth, Jonah, Esther, Song of Solomon, Daniel wisdom teachings, Apocrypha wisdom (Susanna, Bel and the Dragon, Tobit and Judith) and Gospel wisdom.
