Dear Friends,
cerns, we cannot impose ashes in the normal way. That is a shame, because the imposition of ashes is one of the great and solemn moments of the Christian year. Nevertheless, we will begin our journey to the cross and to the tomb, and it is my prayer for you that together, we will die and rise with Jesus Christ during those great forty days.
I like February not so much for what it is as for what it promises. February in Fayetteville In His great love, signals the beginning Dr. John of Spring. The early daffodils will bloom in February, and so will the forsythia. February also begins our 40 days of preparations for Easter. Lent is a time when we try to repent, and if it is a good Lent, we will succeed. This Lent will be a little different for us. We will have an Ash Wednesday service in the sanctuary at 7pm on February 17, which will be livestreamed. But it will more accurately be an “Ashless� Wednesday. Because of Covid con-

Hurricane Repair Work Team We are planning to work on some homes in Columbus County damaged by 2019's Hurricane Dorian at the end of February. All skill levels welcomed! Fashioning Hope Fashioning Hope is a nonprofit organization with a mission to provide free trendy clothes to underprivileged teenage girls in Fayetteville. We host events each month, giving teenage girls the opportunity to get a shopping experience while getting to pick out five free items! We can’t carry out our mission without your help! Since we are not profiting from our outreach, we rely on donations to stock our closet! Cleaning out your closet in the new year and want to donate? We accept any slightly used clothing and accessories that you think a teenage girl would love! Your donation may be someone’s new favorite outfit! Congratulations to Carrie Amabile! Carrie is the recipient of the Ammons-Ciriano Scholarship, which is made available through an endowment created to provide money to students pursuing higher education. Carrie is attending Fayetteville State University to complete her business degree. We are excited for Carrie as she travels this path, and we are grateful to the Ammons and Cirano families for making this scholarship opportunity possible. If you would like more information about this scholarship or establishing an endowment, please call the church office.

Scouts For a Cause My name is Noah Feldmeyer, I have attended HUMC since I was born and have been a member since my confirmation in 2018. I have been a HUMC 740 scout since kindergarten. I am a life scout and have finished all my merit badge requirements. I am now working on my eagle scout project, that has been approved. My beneficiary is Fayetteville Urban Ministries. Fayetteville Urban Ministries request travel size hygiene items for the homeless. Fayetteville Urban Ministries serves over 500 homeless people in the community. I am encouraging HUMC members to donate travel-size hygiene items which include: toothbrush toothpaste deodorant soap/bodywash shampoo conditioner razor shaving cream hand sanitizer lotion feminine hygiene products Please drop off your donations to HUMC during the months of January through March. At the end of March I will be coordinating and leading my fellow scouts in the setup of hygiene kits.

February 14th is Scout Sunday Did you know that Haymount UMC is blessed to have a thriving scouting ministry? This church has chartered a BSA Cub Scout Pack, a BSA Boy Troop, a BSA Girl Troop, and a BSA Venturing Crew, and we have a Girl Scout Troop that meets regularly. With all these scouts in our care, many, many adults are needed to keep the wonderful programs going, and yes, that includes camping, which is highly labor-intensive. Please help us thank our amazing leaders for the work they are doing with our children and youth. If you wish to help with the scouting ministry, please contact Dorothy in the church office. There is room for anyone interested! Preschool Registration It is time to begin planning for a new school year! Preschool registration for the 2021-2022 school year will open to the public on Monday, February 22, 2021. Please tell your family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, or anyone else you can think of. The registration form can be downloaded from the church website. The registration fee is $100 for the first child in a family and $75 for each additional child. Registration will take place in the Fellowship Hall with safety protocols in place. Kids Ministries Continue….. • LIGHT Kids Group continues to meet on Sunday evenings for students in Kindergarten through Fifth Grade from 5:30-7:00 pm. This is a wonderful time of fellowship, sharing dinner together, playing games and learning how to live as Christians today. Friends are highly encouraged to be invited! • MidWeek Kids Time has moved indoors during the winter months, but we still have ample opportunity to run and play. This group, for Kindergartners through Fifth Graders, meets Wednesdays, 4:30-5:30 for games and snacks and “hanging out” with friends. • Kids Online Worship is held on Zoom each Sunday morning at 10am. We sing, we pray, we talk and share, and we learn about the sermon lesson for that week. This worship service is designed for children 4-years-old and older. Haymount Youth The month that we celebrate all that is love is here. What an honor it is to be able to say to my wife for the first time, “Happy Valentine’s Day Rebecca Ellis!” During the month of February, in the spirit of Valentine’s Day, the youth will be learning what it means to show love in the same way that Jesus lived and taught. We will have multiple opportunities for mission/volunteer work, including creating care packages, helping with the yard sale, and more! Youth group is on Sunday evenings from 5:30-7:00 in the New Life Center. Dinner is always served! We will also continue with our Wednesday youth fellowship time (4:305:30). This month, look out for information about any off-campus activities. And an additional note: half-off Valentine’s candy starts on February 15! See your local stores for more details.
Adult Ministries Are You Looking for a Place to Connect? There are several groups that are meeting online that would love to have you join them in study and fellowship. Are you caring for a sick spouse? Once a month a small group gathers for support as they share with one another the journeys, the challenges and celebrations of care-giving, and then the group prays together. The meetings are held the fourth Sunday of every month at 2pm, either on Zoom or outside during COVID restrictions. A Note From Andrew Greetings my brothers and sisters in Christ. We have officially completed the first month of 2021! How are you faring so far? 2021 is going to be a year of big “if’s.” “IF the vaccine is ready, when can we receive it?” “IF we all get vaccinated, when can we stop wearing masks?” “IF I have been given the vaccine, when can I start traveling again?” The good news is we ask these questions because we are hopeful. We are hopeful for this season to end and a new season to begin; one of prosper, one of intimate gatherings, one of concerts and festivals. I invite you to read out of Ecclesiastes one of my favorite passages, Ecclesiastes 3:1-13. What was, is. What is, is to come. And what is to come, was. As we remain hopeful in God’s love and truth and await the day where we can all enjoy each other’s presence again with coffee and donuts, let us enjoy the fruits of our labor, for these are gifts from God. Thank you to all the volunteers of the contemporary service. To the greeters, your warmth, smiles, and hospitality set the mood for the rest of the worship service. You are the love of Jesus! To the audio and visual team, your work behind the scenes is the backbone of the worship service. Everyone sees and experiences your work but does not recognize from whom it is coming. That is Matthew 6:4 to a tee! God sees your giving of your time and talents to His Church and He will reward you for doing so. To the musicians, your gifts and ambition is what drives the worship experience. You have a calling from God and by His grace He gives us the glorious opportunity and immense responsibility to lead His children in worshipping Him. All of you are a great treasure that I cherish. Haymount United Methodist Church Music Ministry Dear Haymount UMC Family, Happy Ordinary Time! I love calendars and organizing. The liturgical year calendar makes me happy. Often, I find the ordinary time between Epiphany and Lent gets overlooked. It is the time that some of our new year’s resolutions have fallen by the wayside. It is sometimes cold and gray, and we just want a mental health day. However, it can become an extraordinary time in our church and in our personal relationship with Jesus. This is time when we can take a moment to breathe and reflect on our many blessings. It is a time to nurture our relationship with Jesus and our church family. For me, it is a time to peruse new music, practice, plan, and study. In Laurence Stookey’s book, Calendar: Christ’s Time for the Church, he states, “For nearly half of the year we come to know the work of God through the great events of our sacred history. During the rest of the year, we come to know the work of God in the world that is closer to us in time and space.” During this year’s ordinary time, I look forward to the future and the extraordinary moments that are coming: the return of our beautiful pipe organ, the return of congregational singing, and the opportunity for our wonderful choir to be able to sing comfortably together again.
