Rev. Dr. John Tyson Lead Pastor FROM THE PASTOR Worship February 2020 The Love Connection One of the greatest human needs is to love and to be loved, and yet, relationships are sometimes baffling for us! How do we improve our love relationships with family and friends? This February at Haymount Church we will focus on four key ways to improve our relationships with those we love. ships is with the words we use. Remember Cyrano? He wasn’t too good looking, but his words made all the difference. In many ways, words actually create reality. As the kindergarten teachers say, “Use your words.” God does. 2.9 Show It! John 3:16 Words are crucial to creating and sustaining loving relationships. But if the words are not backed up with congruent actions, they lose their power. God’s gift of Jesus is the most tangible sign of his love for us. He calls us to find tangible ways to express our love, also. We will celebrate SCOUT SUNDAY at 11:00.

2.2 Say It! John 1:1-3 and Philippians 4:1-9 One of the key ways we grow loving relation

2.16 Forgive! Matthew 6:14,15 Forgiveness is hard, because it is complicated. Some offenses should be forgiven and forgotten, and some should be forgiven and not forgotten; but all successful relationships involve a lot of forgiveness. The good thing is that the Holy Spirit makes our forgiveness genuine and deeply powerful.
2.23 Breathe! Ecclesiastes 3:1-13 It is counterproductive to try to force or hurry loving relationships. They go through seasons, and it can take time for love or friendship to grow and bloom.
Have You Met Drew?
Drew is a lifelong Methodist with a passion for youth and faith formation. He moved to North Carolina in 2017 after graduating from Wright State University. Drew is currently a graduate student attending Duke Divinity School, getting a Master or Arts in Christian Practice. He has been in youth ministry for two years and moved to Haymount UMC in January 2020. He previously held a position at First UMC—Washington as the Director of Children’s and Youth Ministry.

Outside of youth ministry, he has an enthusiasm for mission. Some other interests are hiking, Doctor Who, board games, and kissing frogs (ask him about it sometime!) Drew is getting married to his wonderful fiancée, Rebecca, in September 2020. Rebecca is from Clinton and is getting a Masters degree in Mental Health Counselling at East Carolina University.

Restoration of Haymount Church's Organ by Donald Warren
The 1975 Möeller organ in Haymount’s sanctuary is about to embark on a multi-month restoration and rebuilding project. We expect extensive diagnostics and evaluations to happen in March so that parts can be ordered, and the actual dismantling and rebuilding work to begin in April.
Haymount’s organ exists in four sections, called divisions. When you look at the organ keyboard, or console, there are three keyboards, called manuals, played with the hands and a pedalboard played with the feet. Each of these is connected to a specific set, or division, of pipes.
The manuals each have a name that indicates the division they control. On Haymount’s organ, one is called the swell, one is called the great, and one is called the choir/positiv. In the original design, this organ was meant to have four manuals, making the choir and the positiv two separate divisions, but this was scaled back as a cost-cut- ting measure, so the choir and positiv divisions were reduced and combined into one. During the rebuild, it is usual for the organ builder, who for our project is Lewtak Pipe Organ Builders of Mocksville NC, to remove and rebuild one division at a time. For example, the organ builder might remove first all the pipes associated with the top manual, or the swell division, complete the work on those and then re-install them. They would then remove all the pipes associated with the great division, then the choir/posi- tiv division, and then the pedalboard. This leaves some portion of the organ playable at least part of the time during the rebuild project. Haymount’s pipes are stacked in very tight layers inside the organ chamber above where the choir sits, so how much of the organ remains usable depends on the level of difficulty of removing just one division of pipes at a time. When the console is taken to be rebuilt, the organ is not playable at all, probably for a period of 5 to 8 weeks. The console will be stripped and rewired with
electronic control components. The switches for the different types of pipes, called stop knobs, will be upgraded, and the original ivory-plated keys will be restored to their original luster. The woodwork will be refinished and polished to a pristine condition.
The total cost of the organ rebuild is close to $300,000. Haymount has an organ fund established for designated contributions for this project. You may make a donation simply by indicating “organ fund” on your check or speak with the music or finance staff about allocating contributions to this project.

HUMW

A Call to Prayer and Self-Denial (January – March) is an opportunity to reflect on the Gospel of Christ and make an offering that helps sustain ministry around the coun- try and the world. The 2020 mission focus is: We rise: Meeting God’s Call to Transform Communities. This program shines a light on the many ways United Methodist Women (UMW) members’ gifts have changed the lives of women, children and youth on the margins. Methodist Home for Children (MHFC) February is usually when a special offering is taken for the support of MHFC. This conversation of a MHFC three year old with a new set of parents tells why this offering is important. “What should I call you?” “Whatever you want to call me.” “May I call you mom?” “If that’s what you want.” A week later a babysitter came and the child asked: “Does this make you my mom now?” You can understand her confusion when you know that she and her brother (age 5) were with their fifth set of parents. They are not the only children in a similar situation. Your prayers, caring and contri- bution help these children.
