The Carols of Christmas fill our hearts with joy, but they also fill our minds with important truths about our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Each Sunday during Advent and Christmas time, we will meditate on the meaning and beauty of a favorite carol, and look at the scriptures behind the carols.

Holiday Schedule Nov. 28 O Come, O Come Emmanuel Isaiah 11:1-10 From 6th century Italy, this ancient hymn tells us who Jesus is through a celebration of His many names and titles. Hark the Herald Angels Sing II Corinthians 5:16-21 Dec 5 Written by Charles Wesley, this hymn describes the work of Jesus Christ as Savior and Prince of Peace. Dec 12 Joy to the World Romans 8:19-23 The most popular carol in North America, this hymn celebrates the joy, peace, and restoration that Jesus brings to faithful people, nations, and nature. We will also have the Children’s Nativity on this Sunday, at both 9:00 and 11:00. Dec 19 Lessons and Carols At both 9:00 and 11:00, we will have a Celebration of 9 Lessons and Carols. This will be some of the most beautiful music of the entire year. Luke 2:1-20 Dec 24 Silent Night This hymn was written by Franz Gruber in 1818 with guitar accompaniment because the church organ was being rebuilt (actually, it had been damaged by a flood)! This lovely hymn takes us right to the cradle of Jesus. Dec. 26 O Come All Ye Faithful Luke 2:8-20 This hymn dates from the 17th century, and is sung all over the world. Its beautiful words remind us that the center of Christian life and worship is simply to “behold and adore Him.” For we become like that which we worship. January 2 Go Tell It on the Mountain Matthew 28:16-20 An African American spiritual, this 19th century hymn celebrates the good news of Jesus and bids us share it with the world.

Christmas to Remember During the Christmas season, most of us spend extra money on ourselves and our loved ones for Christmas celebrations; there are gifts, lavish foods, and special treats. In addition, a traditional part of Christmas celebrations is to make generous offerings for the poorest among us, because this honors the Lord Jesus perhaps more than anything else we could do. The Christmas to Remember offering was begun during the pastorate of our beloved Woody Wells. Each year the people of Haymount Church have contributed significantly to relieve the suffering of the poorest of the poor. This offering is received from Thanksgiving until New Year’s. At the request of the Missions Committee, the Church Council has approved Zoe, Curamericas, and Haymount work teams (likely to serve the poor via Appalachian Service Project & UMVIM Puerto Rico) as recipients of this year’s Christmas To Remember offering. 1. Zoe One third of our Christmas to Remember offering will go to Zoe in Africa to rescue orphans in a program that lasts three years. Dr. John has visited these orphans year after year, and the process is always the same. When orphans first join the program, they are in terrible condition. They eat only about two or three times per week because there is no one to take care of them, and unlike here in the United States, there is no government security net for these kids. Worse, their poor neighbors shun or abuse them rather than help them. When they enter the Zoe program, they are given a hoe, some seeds, and they are taught how to plant a kitchen garden. We literally teach them to grow their own food. We teach them about the love of Jesus Christ, and we teach them basic hygiene. Next, they are taught how to begin a small business such as selling vegetables. By the time the three years are up, they are self-sufficient and contributing members of their villages. It takes only $350 to put one orphan through the entire three year program! Won’t you sponsor an orphan? (Continued onthe next page)
Christmas to Remember 2. CureAmericas Global Curamericas Global will use their gift for installation of solar panels at remote birthing centers in Kenya. Their first microgrid that brought reliable electricity to a women’s clinic in Kenya, has won an award for a microgrid located in a remote location. Located at the Matongo Women’s Clinic, the solar and storage microgrid led to a dramatic increase in births at the clinic. Before it was installed, women were hesitant to make the journey to the clinic because of its frequent power outages. Additional birthing centers with reliable electricity will save the lives of mothers and babies in rural Kenya. 3. Haymount work teams We are excited to help send work teams to both Puerto Rico - to help with post hurricane and earthquake rebuilding projects - and with ASP where our HUMC youth will be involved in home repair ministries. CRESP Cumberland Road Elementary needs our help as cold weather approaches! Please bring in clean, gently used, coats, gloves, toboggans, as well as boys and girls clothes for ages Pre-K to 5th grade. If you do not have elementary hand me downs and would like to help, new clothes and winter accessories are welcome! Although we can’t be volunteering in the classroom, we can still help- our partnership with Cumberland Road Elementary dates back to 2013! Archives Archives is in need of (4) volunteers to get acquainted and take over the archives historic files and valuables. The current staff would be available for a short time. Then the new Church Historian will be selected from one of the four to be in charge of the new archive staff, as well as the contents of the archives area. IF INTERESTED: Please call (910) 797- 2442 --- Barbara Hodgson, Current Church Historian. Arrangements will be made to view and discuss needed position titles, as well as duties. It should be noted that all positions will be critical for the complete accomplishment of keeping the Church archives and valuables safe and up to date. The Return of Wednesday Evening Fellowship We will once again gather for fellowship and meals beginning Wednesday, February 2, 2022. What a great activity to schedule for your family for the New Year. Look for details, menus, reservation and payment options in the January newsletter. Those who previously indicated a willingness to serve will receive emails with the new links for sign-ups the first week of January. CPR and First Aid We have our training date set for Monday, January 10th in the Fellowship Hall at 5pm. The cost is $55/person and can be paid with cash, personal check or church check. The training is limited to 18 people. Please call the church office to sign up.

Moravian Candle Tea Workshop for Children Age 5 and Older and Teens Saturday, December 4th 10am-12pm in the HUMC Fellowship Hall The children and teens will: • Make candles • Bake Moravian rolls • Eat the rolls and drink Moravian milk coffee while watching the Christmas story • Be trained to serve at the Moravian Love Feast the following day All children and teens participating in the Candle & Tea event are encouraged to return on Sunday, December 5th at 4pm to serve at the Love Feast. Twas the Night Before Christmas Sunday, December 12th @ 5-7pm in the New Life Center This is a fun evening of sharing a dinner (subs, chips, fruit) and building family gingerbread houses. The children will be able to shop for family members at the Gingerbread House Shop where everything is $1. • • •

Youth News and Pilgrimage Recap In November, the youth had the opportunity to travel to Rocky Mount for the 2021 Pilgrimage youth conference. We were able to hear excellent speakers, praise God through great music and dancing, and got to know each other better throughout the weekend! We left the weekend changed for the better, ready to see God’s face in all those around us: those who are close to us, those who are strangers, and those who are in societies margins! What a victory it is to be able to go worship God alongside 1200 teens and leaders who were receptive to God’s word! Next year we’ll join the rest of the conference in another great Pilgrimage weekend! This month, the youth will be busy! We have our church-wide Moravian Love Feast, ‘Twas the Night/Christmas party, and ample time to meet and have fun… all while getting to know more about the Christ child! Music Notes The Moravian Lovefeast will be held on Sunday, December 5 at 4:00PM in the Fellowship Hall. Please join us for the return of the festive service. Registration is accepted through December 2, or until the event reaches maximum capacity of 90 guests.
Candle Tea December 4th from 10:00AM-12:00PM - This unique event for our children and youth will let them experience the Moravian tradition of Candle Tea and the Christmas Lovefeast. The morning will feature making candles and rolls and hearing the Christmas story. Registration accepted through December 1. For questions, please contact Dorothy Funkhouser or Monica Sparzak. This is an event your kids and youth do not want to miss!

Handbell Ringers In November, members of The HUMC Ringers attended the Mid-Carolinas Handbell Festival in Charlotte. It was a wonderful weekend of learning new music and ringing in a mass choir setting under the direction of composer/ conductor Sandra Eithun.

Wednesday Evening Bible Study
6:15-7:15pm in Room 222 Beginning February 2nd This group Bible study will take a look at the Wisdom literature found in the Bible. We will use Mickey Efird’s video lectures and then spend time discussing what we have learned. The writings we will cover in this study include Job, Ecclesiastes, Ruth, Jonah, Esther, Song of Solomon, Daniel wisdom teachings, Apocrypha wisdom (Susanna, Bel and the Dragon, Tobit and Judith) and Gospel wisdom.
